BOXING NEWS
Heavyweight Night by Rocco Brasi, New York Daily Planet Sports Writer Friday, August 23, 1901 – Heavyweight night was back on last night after a two week hiatus. There have not been enough rested heavyweights to complete a fight card. Boxers are required to have six weeks rest between fights. Flatbush’s Vassily Jirov started the night with an impressive 10-1 record with nine knockouts and was expecting an easy win over Bert Whitehurst, who had a 4-5-3 record with no knockouts. Jirov had hopes to be ranked in September. However, Whitehurst, who fights out of the South Bronx Boxing club, was not impressed with Jirov and fought his way to a unanimous decision. Jirov’s only other loss came last October when he lost a split decision to Larry Holmes. The only ranked fighters on the card, #22 Rocky Marciano and #21 Buster Douglas, won easily via stoppage. Top bouts are shown below. Thursday night, August 22nd
