WEEBLe

I'm starting a new universe. I plan on actually sticking with this one.

The basic idea is pretty simple. An 8 weight class universe using historical fighters with random start years. The twist is that all the fighters are split between 30 trainer/cutman pairings that act as stables. These stables have different management styles that determines how they choose fights for their fighters.

New fighters starting each year are assigned to a stable via a draft process.

I'll attach the rules document for those who are interested.

Nice start and idea - what does this mean exactly: Has a 50% chance of fighting higher rated/lower ranked fighters. Has a 75% chance of fighting higher rated/lower ranked fighter. It is under GUNG HO.

I'm not quite sure how it works in practice yet, but here's the idea. Say the #6 ranked fighter has a rating of 5 and the #11 fighter has a rating of 7 and they're both scheduled to fight. I would generate a random number from 1 to 100. If it's under 75 (or 50, depending on the % chance) then he will fight the #11 fighter. If not, he will find another fighter to fight who is not a higher rated fighter than he is.

I haven't started scheduling with this system yet, so I reserve the right to change anything at anytime.

I asked the question in the wrong way.. How come GUNG HO has both 50% and 75% chance of fighting someone higher rated / lower ranked.

It's been a long couple of years, but we're finally ready to start having real fights. I'll bump the rankings requirement up to 15 fights as soon as enough guys reach that level. As you can tell, the Bantamweights are the class of the universe so far. They'll get even better as The Highlander Eder Jofre is set to start his career in 2002.

Tae-Shik Kim vs. Fernando Martinez - Flyweight Title Bout

Welcome to the first ever WEEBLe championship bout. This fight should be a great action fight between two undefeated sluggers.

Tae-Shik Kim comes in as the #1 ranked fighter in the Flyweight division with a record of 11-0-0 with 10 KO's.

16-year-old Fernando Martinez comes in as the #2 fighter with a record of 10 and 0 with 5 KO's.

The fighters come out ready to fight in first round. Martinez holds his own and lands a couple very nice body shots during the first minute of the round. It doesn't take Kim long, however, to capitalize on Martinez's youthful mistakes. He dominates the second half of the round and wobbles Martinez on more than one occasion. The bell rings to end what could have easily been scored a 10-8 round for Kim.

The next two rounds are won easily by Kim but are relatively uneventful.

As the fourth round begins, Martinez knows that the fight is slipping away from him. He rushes Kim and seems to have him on his heels. Late in the round, however, Kim finds a hole in his defense and lands a crushing right cross that knocks Martinez to his knees and then flat onto the canvas. The referee counts to 10, but Martinez makes no move to stand. He's out cold.

The winner by KO at 2:11 in the 4th round and the new WEEBLe Flyweight Champion is Tae-Shik Kim!

April 20, 2002 - Tae-Shik Kim vs. Yuichi Hosono

Tae-Shik Kim 12-0-0 (11) vs. Yuichi Hosono 7-0-1 (2)

"I'll fight anyone, anytime, anywhere, for any belt. It's not like I'm going to lose." That was Tae-Shik Kim's reply when asked why he was putting his belt on the line against an untested, unranked opponent. Most experts agreed with Kim. Hosono was not even considered to be on the level of Fernando Martinez, whom Kim had easily beaten to win the title.

The fight started out slowly with both fighters trying to find an opening. Between the second and third rounds Kim's corner convinced him that he was losing and need to step it up a notch. He did so by dominating the 3rd and 4th rounds, hurting Hosono badly in the 4th.

When the bell for the 5th round rang, Hosono was slow to get off his stool. 17 seconds into the round, however, Kim ran into a beautiful hook from Hosono. The next thing he new he was on his back with the referee counting 7, 8... He scrambled to his feet. Kim retreated and clinched his way through the rest of the round, but was never the same. He was down again in the 6th and 7th rounds before the fight was finally stopped 2 minutes into the 7th round.

"I've always known that I have what it takes to be a champion." Hosono said after the fight. When asked about a rematch, he said, "I doubt he'll want to fight me again after the beating he took."

Kim refused to be interviewed after the fight, but he's rumored to be unhappy with his management for not including a rematch clause in the fight contract.

Yuichi Hosono vs. Francisco Quiroz - 5/29/2002

Yuichi Hosono 8-0-1 (3) WEEEBLe Champion
vs.
Francisco Quiroz 6-1-1

There's apparently something in the water here in the flyweight division. Just one month after a suprising victory over Tae-Shik Kim to win the title, Yuichi Hosono decides to put it on the line against another untested, unranked fighter.

For most of the fight, Hosono's decision looked like a good one. He was easily winning an unexciting fight when he suffered a cut to the mouth in the 6th round. The cut did not seem to affect his performance, as he just kept on winning rounds. Quiroz rallied in the 10th, however, and had Hosono on shaky legs by the end of the round.

While Hosono's legs recovered during the break, the cut inside his mouth did not. The 11th round began without incident and Hosono showed the easy dominance he had earlier in the fight. With about a minute left, however, the referee called the doctor into the ring to look at the cut.
A minute later, Freddie Roach was screaming from Hosono's corner as the end of the fight was signaled. Hosono sat stunned as he could not comprehend losing a fight in which he had dominated.

A look at the score cards showed Hosono ahead by 5-6 points on all three cards. He started calling for a rematch before he even left the ring.

9-17-2002 Francisco Quiroz vs. Fernando Martinez

Francisco Quiroz 8-1-1 (1)
vs.
Fernando Martinez 11-1-0 (7)

Quiroz was never really considered anything more than a placeholder as champion, but you have to give him credit for choosing to fight Fernando Martinez in his first title defense.

When the bell rang, Martinez jumped all over Quiroz and cut him above the eye before round one was over. In round 2 Quiroz found himself on the canvas, and it looked like the fight would be over quickly. He got up, but his legs looked shaky as he finished the round.

Quiroz rallied to win two of the next three rounds. Just when it looked like he was about to make it a decent fight after all, he went down again in the sixth. He got up, but Martinez showed his killer instinct and put Quiroz down for good just before the round ended.

Fernando Martinez becomes the 4th WEEBLe flyweight champion this year.

10-30-2002 Fernando Martinez vs. Francisco Quiroz - The Rematch

Fernando Martinez 12-1-0 (7)
vs.
Francisco Quiroz 8-2-1 (1)

After getting beat handily in their first fight, no one suspected Francisco Quiroz to exercise the rematch clause in his contract. That, however, is exactly what he did.

After a month of intense defensive training, Quiroz stepped into the ring against Martinez ready to show the world that he was a legitimate champion. Martinez was annoyed at having to fight Quiroz again and looked to end the fight quickly.

Martinez stormed out of the gates, but Quiroz was able to match his intensity. They traded punches furiously in the first round, but neither fighter was able to gain an advantage. As the fight wore on, the adjustments Quiroz made to his defense proved to be the difference. The fight went 12 rounds and Martinez was only able to land 12% of his punches. Despite being significantly outworked, Quiroz's defence and efficiency won the day and his 42% connect percentage allowed him to land more punches while throwing fewer.

The belt in the flyweight division continues to change hands as we wait for a true champion to emerge. Quiroz owns it for now, but with fighters like Tae-Shik Kim, Alejandro Montiel, and Johnny Hill in line for title shots, no one can picture him having it for too much longer.

Title History

4/20/2002 – Yuichi Hosono TKO7 over Tae-Shik Kim

5/17/2002 – Francisco Quiroz TKO11 over Yuichi Hosono

9/21/2002 – Fernando Martinez KO6 over Francisco Quiroz

10/30/2002 – Francisco Quiroz UD12 over Fernando Martinez

Fighter of the Year

Francisco Quiroz
2002 Record 4-2-0 (1)

Quiroz record may not look impressive, but in 2002 he upset Yuichi Hosono to win the belt, lost badly to Fernando Martinez in his first title defense, then earned a 12 round upset victory over Martinez to win the belt back. His courage, grit, and determination have allowed Quiroz, whom experts consider to be outclassed in nearly every bout, to contend with any man who steps into the ring against him.

Fight of the Year

4/20/2002 –
Kim 12-0-0 (11) vs. Hosono 7-0-1 (2)

Kim dominates the early rounds and hurts Hosono badly. Hosono barely gets off his stool to start the 5th, but lays Kim out with a hook only 17 seconds later. Kim is down again in the 6th and 7th before the fight is finally stopped.

I’m Glad this Year’s Over

Shigeharu Akitsuki – 3-2-0

Not a bad record, until you see that both losses were to previously winless fighters.

2002 BW Year in Review

2002 Bantamweight Year in Review

2002 was a very good year for the best division in boxing right now. Thanomchit Sukothai KO’d Samson Dutch Boy Gym to become the first WEEBLe Bantamweight champion. He defended successfully twice before coming in as the favorite in the fight against Richie Sandoval, who’d beaten Roger Galicia in a title eliminator bout to earn his shot at Sukothai. Sandoval jumped out of the gate with a 6 punch combo that knocked Sukothai out cold and earned him the title. In other action, Dick Corbett fought in a title eliminator against Pierre Vetroff. After having Vetroff down in the first round, Corbett got a cut over his eye which stopped the fight in the 3rd round. Vetroff will be the first fighter for Sandoval to defend his title against. All the top fighters have noticed the arrival of Eder Jofre, who’s easily dismantled every opponent so far. Experts believe that Jofre will be the best fighter in the division within 2 years.

Flyweight Champion
Richie Sandoval 12-0-1 (8)

8/14/2002 – Thanomchit Sukothai UD12 over Pierre Vetroff

12/3/2002 – Richie Sandoval KO1 over Thanomchit Sukothai

Fighter of the Year

Thanomchit Sukothai
2002 Record 4-1-0 (3)

Sukothai won 4 fights against ranked opponents to earn this honor. He won each fight decisively and looked light the best fighter in the division for 11 months out of the year.

Fight of the Year

8/14/2002 –
Sukothai 16-0-0 (12) vs. Vetroff 16-2-1 (1)

Sukothai dominates the fight and has Vetroff down 4 times over 12 rounds. Vetroff rallies from each knockdown, however, and shows the heart of a champion by picking up 4 of the rounds in which he stayed upright.

Glad this Year’s Over

Hughey Boyle 1-2-1

With 2 losses and a majority draw in fights against winless fighters, Boyle’s questioning how much longer his career will last.
