March Madness

I am going to start a “quick and dirty” universe that will last until April 7th. It will coincide with the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament. It will be a single elimination tournament with all weight divisions.

I will take every male boxer in the database and from these pick the top 65. There are 28 boxers rated 13, 14 or 15. That means I need 37 more to make the top 65. Since there are 50 boxers rated at 12, I will have a tournament to eliminate 13 of them.

Seeds will be announced Sunday around noon PDT when the pairings for the 65 boxers are revealed.

Seed number 64 will fight seed number 65 to see who gets the 64th spot.

There will be four regions (West, East, Midwest and South) each with 16 boxers.

All fights will be 15 rounds.

Sounds fun! Any plans of throwing some betting in there?

This looks like fun. I'd be hard pressed trying to fill out brackets with some of these match-ups!

So Jeff, are injuries turned on, and if so, do they just affect the fight in which they happen?

Yes, they are turned on. It would just effect the one fight. Also, I will have to replay any draws, I think.

If I can get 4 or 5 guys interested, I will have a fun little contest on who will win March Madness. I won’t be eligible.

Here is how it will go. I will post an Excel file with the 64 fighters in their brackets. Each person opens the Excel file and picks who will win each fight all the way to the championship. After picking all of the winners, a total of 63, post the Excel file back on the web site. I will post a running tally on who has the most points.

Scoring would go as follows:

Round 1: 10 points for each correct winner…32 bouts = 320 possible points
Round 2: 20 points for each correct winner…16 bouts = 320 possible points
Round 3: 40 points for each correct winner…8 bouts = 320 possible points
Round 4: 80 points for each correct winner…4 bouts = 320 possible points
Round 5: 120 points for each correct winner….2 bouts = 240 possible points
Round 6: 160 points for the correct winner….1 bout = 160 possible points
Total possible points = 1680

I got the idea from an ESPN contest.

Anyone up for the challenge?

Opening Bout - Tuesday March 18, 2008

Charley Burley (83-12-2) vs. Abe Attell (58-8-1)

Burley scored a TKO at the 2:43 mark in the 8th round. Attell was down once in the 7th and once in the 8th. Scored: 69-64, 69-63 and 69-63, all for Burley.

Burley advances to the final 64. He will be the number 16 seed in the East Region.

Here is the Excel file for anyone who wants to try to pick the winners of March Madness.

Open the file and type in all of the winners, all the way to the Champion. Then repost the file. It is easiest to view the file at 200%.

The first round begins Thursday night, so please post picks by then.

Thanks and good luck to everyone who enters!

Just a reminder, all fights will be 15 rounds using WBC rules. Injuries are on and all draws will be immediately re-fought.

Can you change something for me? Joe Louis beats all, but RJJ.

I can do that, but they would only meet in the Championship bout since they start out in different brackets?
