1806 Gallery of the Gallant Ballot
![]() Attention: Voting membership of the Royal Explorers Club Balloting for the 1806 Gallery of the Gallant is now open and will remain so for three days. You may cast a ballot for any, all or none of the following retired pugilists: Tom Johnson (HW) 1783 - 1802W20(8) / L11(5) / D2 - Two-time World Heavyweight Champion & English Heavyweight Champion Johnson held the English title briefly in 1783 when he defeated the great Mendoza. In 1795, when he was generally considered past his prime, Johnson pushed eventual World champion John Jackson to a second day of fighting in the REC elimination tournament. With a flagging career, Johnson had a seven fight string beginning in 1798 that led to a World title shot in 1800 at the age of fifty. Johnson shocked the fancy with an upset over Big Ben Bryan. He lost the belt to Thomas Owen in 1801 but miraculously won it back in 1802 and defended once before retiring from the ring. This is Johnson's forth time on the ballot. Full record Tinman Hooper (MW) 1789 - 1803W19(5) / L11(3) / D3 - World Middleweight Champion & Two-time English Middleweight Champion Hooper was the workhorse of the middleweight division for more than a decade defeating (and bowing to) nearly everyone of consequence. More than half of his professional bouts were for the English or World titles. This is Hooper's third time on the ballot. Full record Joe Ward (HW) 1789 - 1805W20(6) / L11(8) / D2 Ward was a competent pug that became a fixture in the REC annual rankings. Full record Jack Holmes (MW) 1786 - 1800W9(1) / L17(6) / D4 - Two-Time English Middleweight Champion Despite compiling a losing record, Holmes was in the right place to secure the English title twice over his fourteen year career. Full record Solly Sodicky (HW) 1789 - 1803W17(6) / L12(3) / D2 / ND1 From 1795 to 1802, Sodicky won 15 of 18 mills and pushed his way to the top of the REC rankings. His lone title shot resulted in a fifteen round decision to Tom Johnson. Full record Ruffian Symonds (HW) 1791 - 1803W13(5) / L12(6) / D1 Symonds was a tough pug that ground out a decent career in the prize ring. Full record Sincerely, Lord Cornelius Acton President, Royal Explorers Club of Glasgow. Visit the Gallery of the Gallant Last edited by Lord Cornelius Acton : 04-18-2008 at 05:27 PM. |

Looking at that group you have to think that Johnson will take this ballot by a landslide. I don't really see anyway he won't get into the Gallery this year.

Thanks Tom. I have bits and pieces of that printed out but not all of it as I have with Fistiana. Still hoping to get a glimps of the rare American Fistiana some day.
I have been starting to crawl through the Famous Fights re-posts on this site: Famous Fights - boxing history Very entertaining stuff.

Dang it Chris - like I don't have enough reading on my plate already. ![]() Since Johnson is a favorite of yours, I will lift my protest over the earlier shoddy treatment of Bob Watson and cast a vote in his favor.
