A Compressed World of Fisticuffs
A Compressed World of Fisticuffs
This is an experimental universe started from scratch in TBCB2.5 to take advantage of the new features and enhanced flexibility. Compressed, you ask? Well, this universe will compress time and weight classes. First, historical real-life boxers will compete over a much shorter time-frame. We will start in 1930 with fighters who debuted in the late 19th century, adding two or three years worth of fighters for each year of game time thereafter. Also, the seventeen weight classes of the current world will be distilled into eight. You will see the traditional divisions pre-dating the alphabet soup era. This setup will allow for some intriguing matchups between similar eras and weights without trying to compare fighters who fought 70 years and 70 pounds apart. The other twist will be the introduction of an equal number of fictional fighters with a realistic distribution of ratings compared to the real life database. There will also be the usual parade of fictional punching bags to pad early records. I don't use the term tomato cans for two reasons. One, cans hurt my hands when I punch them. Two, I love tomatoes too much to ever intend them any harm. There will only ever be one world champion per weight class. Given the compression and introduction of quality fictional fighters, a World Championship will elusive for marginal fighters. I will be crowning Regional and National champions on a regular basis to soothe the battered egos. I am stealing much of this part of the setup along with matchmaking methodology from ConnChris and others. I anticipate updates to this thread to be infrequent as I will also compress significant chunks of game time into single posts. I may sim ahead a couple of years at a time in each weight class and then post full yearly results once all weight classes have caught up. The first two years will obviously be used to build some history.

1930 In the Flyweight division a young Japanese appears to be an up and coming superstar. Tetsuhiko Watanabe has impressed with a string of six victories (five by knockout). Pep Rivera from Mexico and Eddie Avery are showing well in North America with Fred Bruce from the Dem. Republic of Congo leading the African contingent. No clear favourite has emerged in Europe, although Robin Hogg seems to be the odds on man to break out in 1931. In the Bantamweight division, there is no clear favourite. Aussie Brendan Tierney looks solid as does Canadian George Dixon. Linhart Rehberg of Germany also bears watching along with Arturo Garcia of Argentina. Magnus Ostgerg of Denmark and Wilson Garcia of Mexico made impressive debuts in the Featherweight division. The hype about American Mark Burch was derailed when he was disqualified in his first fight. Five victories followed to reinstate his reputation. Lightweights to watch include Harry Gilmore of Canada, Gustaw Honigman of Poland and Tkuro Yagi of Japan. A large contingent of American fighters beat up on each other through the year with no particular standouts yet. There is a plethora of talent among the early Welterweights. Mysterious Billy Smith of Canada and Tommy Ryan from the US both look formidable. American Charles Kemmick and Tewodros Haki from Cameroon also appear to have what it takes to contend in the future. Jim Pettengell is the early man to beat in the Middleweight division. The Kiwi has an unblemished record after seven bouts as does both American Keith Cochran and the Scot Jay MacIntosh. The pundits are however keeping a careful eye on an Irishman, Jack Dempsey who has only fought twice to date. Thirteen Light-Heavyweights are undefeated after the first year of bouts. American Larry Temple has sprinted out to an impressive 8-0-0 (5) record. Other notables in the group are Shimei Sano of Japan, Sang-Hyun O of South Korea, Brit Bob Fitzsimmons and Americans Joe Choynski and Philadelphia Jack O’Brien. The Heavyweights have a number of interesting contenders led by unknown Mexican Arturo Ferreira, Egyptian Adnan bin Qutuz and American Carlton Hodges. All of the other unbeatens are obscure in reputation except for the Englishman, Tom Sayers.

One other housekeeping item. I have set up separate universes for each weight class to help keep the active file size and processing time down as I am simming and saving. As a result, you will at times be reading about the same boxer in multiple weight classes with different records. I contemplated eliminating them from all but one division, but decided what the hell?, let's see how they would do in a careeer at each weight division. Sorry if this gets you a little

The North American Boxing Union and the South American Boxing Association have been replaced by the Pan American Pugilism Council (PASC). This move should provide more balance in quality between regions as well as afford more opportunity for the non-US fighters to get a shot at World Championships. It also recognizes the overwhelming number of fighters from the United States in the world rankings. American fighters will have the opportunity to fight for four lower level belts within their home country.
