Final Score:

The Nobodies 15-15-2 (10) = 47.5
Hebron Haymakers 15-15-2 (11) = 49.5

Wow,what a second half by the Nobodies, they really put the awesome Hebron machine to the test. Great matchup, boy we have had a lot of really close matches thus far...nailbiters. Congrats to my man Michael Nunn(yeah I traded him away)one of my favorite all time fighters, kind of wish I had kept him but I had one of my Al Davis moments that I'm known for..LOL. He has been pretty much unstoppable. Well, thanks for keeping the league moving Sal and everyone have a safe weekend(whats left anyway). Peace fellas.

In my worst 'utba' nightmare I did not expect to be fighting for the #1 pick this season.

BONNER SPRINGS - The Beavers have once again anointed the little bantam, Hideyasu Ishihara, Fighter of the Week. Tradition typically dictates a "spreading of the wealth" of this honor, and fighters rarely win it multiple times in the same season. But Ishihara did what no other Beaver fighter accomplished this week, dispatching both Coventry opponents,
Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym and Teddy Baldock, via 5th round KO.

On the season, Ishihara is 5-1-0 with 4 KO's.

Long Overdue Bink Gazette

BINK GAZETTE November 29, 2008

The Binks opened Season 2 filled with enthusiasm, their slate wiped clean, hoping to better their 2-8 record from the prior season. They opened their season abroad, traveling to the lovely town of Bendigo, Australia, tangling with Shane’s Boxing Kangaroos. For some reason, perhaps to cater to the mascots making the trip, Mikehoudini chartered a boat for the voyage. He intended the trip as a reward for his doughty squad, but should have realized things might go amiss when he met the Skipper and his first mate, a thin lad named Gilligan.

Somehow, the Skipper and Gilligan got lost and stranded, and the Binks thought they would have to open with a forfeit, but a passing ship threw them a line and towed the poor Binkies to an island in the Pacific, from whence the Binks caught an emergency flight and made it to Bendigo the night before the fights! Were they rested? No, as Ring Card Girl extraordinaire Amina Sade and her friends had done their best to ease their stress levels as fight day loomed closer and closer. Were they angry? You betcha, as an almost vice-president would say, and, if the Skipper and Gilligan could have been in the ring, the Binks would have cleaned up!

The match was held November 20, and the Binks hoped to make an early and lasting impression. Five fights in, they had, as they were then 0-5, a dismal start all too reminiscent of the shellacking they’d suffered at the hands of the hated Hebron Haymakers.

Johnny Hill, in his first fight, battled the dangerous Hussein Hussein to the final bell, but dropped the decision. Jackie Brown had become homesick for Manchester, so the Binks had drafted this youngster and felt he’d done well for a Johnny-come-lately. Fellow fly Chocky Chockvivat, who was 9-10-1 coming in, narrowly lost a decision to Benny Lynch. Bantam Danny O’Sullivan (7-12-1) fought surprisingly well before suffering an 8th round KO to champion Jimmy Carruthers. Boots Monroe (5-15) survived the waiver rounds, but not Elley Bennett, and the lad with the girly name TKOd him in 7. When Jose Badillo (6-13-1) was binked out in the first round, things looked mighty bleak.

Young Corbett II (8-12) finally broke the streak, and the fiery Binks went on a roll! 6-14 Bummy Davis put Jim Barron away in 2 rounds, and 11-8-1 Buzzsaw Yamabe scored a minor upset, stopping Herb McCoy in the 9th on cuts. Welterweight champion Cocoa Kid (20-3-1) easily decisioned Julian Holland and Tommy West (6-14) upset Gary Jacobs on a thunderous 4th round TKO. Henry Hank, who finished last year with a disappointing 8-9-3 record, won the 6th straight fight with a classy decision over Sam Soliman. Max Resch, a superb performer with an 8-11-1 record, ended the streak, being stopped by a tough rookie, Billy Papke. The light heavies and heavyweights split, and the score at halftime was Binks 25.5, Kangaroos 25. Our Binkies had wowed the Aussie crowd, who cheered them, or possibly they were cheering for Amina Sade or even the mascots who had made the trip, Jubilee the devil boy and Murphy Stout.

In any event, Mack Lewis was pleased at the recovery, but a bit concerned at the performance of the lighter weight classes. He talked to the lads at halftime, pointing out strengths and weaknesses, well aware that the slender lead could easily be squandered!

Opening the 2nd half, Chocky pasted Hussein with a hook in the 6th, and the Binks were off and running! Well, not exactly. Johnny Hill gave a good account of himself, but Benny Lynch took him out in the 9th. Danny O’Sullivan was binked in the 3rd by Elley, and Boots Monroe lasted about 30 seconds against the champ Carruthers! Some thought he should be hung in effigy for his terrible performance, but Bunky from Highlandtown didn’t know where Effigy was!

Jose Badillo almost stopped the pain, but lost a close bout to Calvin Grove. Young Corbett II surprised the small Bink contingent by flattening Bert Spargo in 5, and he was looking like a stopper! The lightweights split, Buzzsaw outclassing Jim Barron, while Bummy Davis was robbed in a split decision loss to Herb McCoy. Bummy was enraged at the decision, and the devil boy had to be restrained, as he came menacingly close to the judges’ table! Even the sporting hometown fans booed the verdict!

A win by Bummy would have put the match in a virtual dead heat, and the Binks went on a tear. Cocoa Kid outclassed Gary Jacobs, and Tommy West notched a 2nd KO, this time in 10, against Julian Holland! Henry Hank had too much savvy for the youngster Papke, saying lights out with a samurai uppercut in the 6th! When Max Resch upset Sam Soliman with a gutsy performance, it looked like the Binks were unstoppable!

And such in fact was the case. Lightheavy Oakland Billy Smith evened his night by KOing Danny Green in 7, and his mate Melio Bettina got his 2nd KO, this time in 9 against Anthony Mundine! Newcomer Buster Douglas showed his inexperience and dropped his 2nd fight of the night, as Bill Farnan binked him in 9, but he had fought very well up to that point, and was ahead on all cards. Bink captain Hasim Rahman ended the night with a devastating cross to put Walter Neusel away in the 9th, his second KO of the evening!

When the dust settled, the Binks had gone 10-6 in the 2nd half, outscoring the Kangaroos, 33.5-19. The final score was Binks 18-14, winning on points, 59-44! This was an amazing start for a team that was lucky just to have arrived in Bendigo.

Young Corbett II and Tommy West shared Fighter of the Week honors, though many others also went 2-0, namely Buzzsaw Yamabe, Henry Hank (possibly for the first time ever), steady Melio Bettina and captain Rahman! Melio and the Rock both had 2 KOs, but Corbett twice stopped losing streaks in his best performance to date, and West had a KO and a TKO in two minor upsets.

In terms of the Bum of the Week award, our “battling” bantams, Danny O’Sullivan and boots Monroe, shared this dubious award. The best they could do was a TKO loss by Boots, who exited stage immediate in his match against the champion Carruthers!

After the match, the Binks were treated to a night of hospitality by the Kangaroos, and many a fine Autralian beer was consumed. The kangaroos even served each of the mascots a fine steak, and the Binks saluted their hosts! Mack Lewis was thrilled with the outing, but cautioned the Binks about becoming too overconfident.

The Binks happily took a flight back to the states, not wanting to chance another trip with the Skipper and Gilligan! Their next match is on November 30 at home against their divisional rival St. Louis Sluggers! Could they be off to a 2-0 start? Only time will tell. Another printers strike delayed this publication, but the author was able to enjoy many cases of fine Aussie beer while waiting for this issue to come to press.

As alwys, we sign off with the Bink mantra: Bink fever, catch it! You’ll only wish you died!

Week 2 Bink Gazette

BINK GAZETTE December 3, 2008

After their rousing opening week win over the Boxing Kangaroos, the Binks returned home to host divisional rival St. Louis Sluggers. The fans poured into the BaltimoreCivicCenter for the November 30 contest, fired up at the prospect of opening 2-0, and fired up anticipating the performance of Amina Sade and friends! The Binks had split with the Sluggers last season, and tem owner Vistaman was on hand to cheer his men on!

Amina and friends worked the crowd before the fights commenced, and team mascot Jubilee the devil boy was there, along with Miss Mooey from St. Looey, both eager to influence the judges. It turned out to be a night to remember, as the Binks came out slugging, going 9-5-2 in the first half, good for a 30-19 lead, then going 11-5 in a 33-16 second half! When the dust settled, the Binks had claimed a 20-10-2, 63-35 win!

Johnny Hill, one of two newcomers, was knocked out in 8 by te dangerous Rosendo Alvarez, but notched his first win in a close majority decision over fellow newcomer Dado Marino. Perhaps Jubilee had influenced the judges’ decision. In any event, Jonny had his first win since replacing Jackie Brown! Chocky Chockvivat stopped Marino in 7, then got a TKO on cuts win over Alvarez in round 8, after punishing his plucky opponent!

Danny O’Sullivan continued his love affair with the canvas, suffering his 3rd & 4th KO losses of the year. Amazingly, 5-17 boots Monroe came to life, first out-boxing and then stopping Gaby Canizales on cuts in the 9th, then finally living up to his potential in a splendid 12 round win over Jorge Lujan! The flys and bantams had gone a combined 1-7 in the season opener, so this improved showing of 5-3 was pivotal!

Young Corbett II was again unstoppable, stopping Marcos Villasana in 8, then Daniel Zaragoza in 9! His 4-0 start after an 8-12 initial campaign has been amazing. Gutsy fellow feather Jose Badillo was leading until Zaragoza stopped him on cuts in the 10th, then fought well before Villasana clocked him in the 9th.

Buzzsaw Yamabe got a nice upset by stopping Art Aragon on cuts in the 10th, but then walked into a cross from Ernesto Espana in the 6th and that was all she wrote. Fellow lightweight Bummy Davis is off to a great start, and pounded Espana en route to a 12 round win, then shocked everyone by battering Aragon in an amazingly brutal 2nd round TKO, as Art was helpless lying against the ropes! But for a questionable split decision loss in Week 1, Bummy would be 4-0!

Tommy West had a tough week, losing twice, never getting past the 5th round, but Welterweight champion Cocoa Kid garnered two more successful defenses of his crown and is now 24-3-1. He stopped Ike Quartey on cuts in the 4th, prompting an outcry from the Sluggers, as this was the 3rd stoppage on cuts. The Kid then banged out a nice decision against Angel Espada. Espada cut him, but the Kid had the moxie to battle on despite the severity of the gut and get his man! Hopefully his cut will be healed in time for the next fight!

Middleweight Maxxie Resch continues to perform above his level! He drew with the highly-favored Joey Giambra, then pummeled Phil Kating, knocking him out in 3! It took Henry Hank, the Detroit Destroyer, 8 rounds to stop Kating, and the man once known as Hard-Luck Hank got a second win via the disqualification route in Round 4 against Giambra. Henry had been leading, and Joey let his frustrations get the better of him. Hank is now 4-0 after going 8-9-3 in Year 1!

Jimmy Adamick KOd both Bink light heavies, but Melio Bettina decisioned a young Doug Jones and Oakland Billy Amith stopped him in 10. Captain Hasim Rahman battled to a draw against Michael Dokes, then KOd Cesar Brion in 5. Young Buster Douglas, the 2nd newcomer, was impressive as he stopped Brion in 2, then shocked the favored Dokes, who always has given Rahman trouble, with a 3rd round KO! Buster lived up to his name and is now 2-2.

Bummy Davis, Boots Monroe, Max Resch and Buster shared Fighter of the Week honors, though Chocky Chockvivat and Young Corbett II also could be counted in the mix, as could MVB Cocoa Kid. Bummy’s demolition of Art Aragon and win over Espana were inspiring. Boots finally was impressive in his two wins. Max fought the highly-favored Giambra to a draw, and stopped his other opponent. Buster busted butt, sitting his opponents on theirs.

In terms of the Bum of the Week award, Danny O’Sullivan earned the honor with his poor performances in being KOd twice. Joes Badillo lost twice, but went deeper into his fights than anticipated.

The Binks then treated the Sluggers to a night of steamed crabs, crab cakes, oysters and beer, and the two teams parted as friends. Even dour Mack Lewis was smiling after the convincing win. Maybe Boots Monroe was finally coming to life, and Young Corbett II seemed a new man! The big concern was the cut to the Cocoa Kid. Mack was a bit worried about that, as the Binks are next to take on Romy’s Muckboys, who have a young phenom in their welterweight division, Henry Armstrong!

Still, a 2-0 start is phenomenal, and the Binks have already matched their total of wins from the first season. Unbelievably, and probably temporarily, they are at the top of the vaunted Cribb Division!

Bink fever, catch it! You’ll only wish you died!

Huge 2nd half for my team but they came up short in the end. Decent showing from my team but they shouldn't be getting themselves into that deep a hole.

Tommy Morrison looks to have cooled off from a really great 1st season. He just got his 1st and only win of the season here in round 3.

Congrats to hebron on a really good match.

Big match against the Beavers next week. I'm not expecting much though. I think that Matt has a better team at this point and the addition of Schmeling made a strong team even stronger. Many of his guys has hit prime quite early also.

I would be quite content if we can hold the score at a reasonable level.

I think you might have a battle on your hands, as despite the changes I have made my team doesn't appear to be any better than last season.

At least I still have Jack Delaney, Art Hafey and a resurgent Sammy Luftspring.
