A few thoughts on Universes

I have to say, you guys have some very large universes with lots of depth and history.

Comparatively, I feel like mine is sort of a "story" about a universe than an actual universe! With all the options available in the game, I may be just scratching the surface.

I like the idea of regional titles that I saw.

Some fighters I'm bringing along fight by fight. Like Larry Holmes, for instance. I started him with his first fight. After winning 11 in a row, he's ranked too high (at least in my opinion). The other fighters I've entered into the top ten (starting the universe) with records similar to their actual historical records. But of course, they don't have the performance points that a fighter brought along one fight at a time.

Not really sure how to remedy that, but I'm doing it manually right now.

Right now, I'm focusing on creating a type of universe where nostalgia and the modern era are combined.

As a kid I went to the Duva's fights in Totawa NJ. There's when they were just starting - at the Ice Palace. I was about 5 or 6 years old. I went to the fights in Newark, Atlantic City and other places with my father and grandfather.

The atmosphere was dirty and gritty but it was a great place to be! As a kid at the fights, I could swear, fart, eat like a pig and wipe my mouth with my sleeve and no one would say a thing. When I walked into the men's room for the first time I was happy to see that I wasn't the only one with bad aim.

It didn't matter if I were going to see club fighters in Club fights or champion caliber fighters in Title Fights. Boxing was boxing - the good, bad and ugly.

That's sort of what I've tried and am trying to bring into my universe. But I've gotta say, there's a lot of good ideas on this board.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your universes!

You know, I just realized, there's only one page of universes? I thought there were 4 or 5?

Well, I feel better because I can keep up with one page's worth of Uni's - not four.

There is nothing like a small venue fight in Jersey!!!! Usually more action in the audience than in the ring.

Yeah, I know! I was at the old Brendan Byrne arena back in the 80's. Jimmy Paul, Benardo Pinango defended their titles that night. The beer was flowing, greasy hot dogs, soda - all ground into the floor by the main event.

That's not exactly a small venue, though.

I saw loads of fights down in AC - some in the small ball rooms. Those were the days when boxing seemed to be everywhere!

You might have it set to show the threads only from the last month or so. There's actually 14 pages since the forum started.

Here's a real bad one for you--Ali/Wepner with Norton/Quarry 1975 closed circuit tv broadcast at the Stanley Theatre in Journal Square, Jersey City.

Since you and I are (I think) the only Jersey folks (maybe one or two others), we alone could appreciate the nature of the audience--I can't believe I lived to tell about it!---LOL!

I don't miss the closed circuit crowds, that's for sure! Jersey and New York have a sort of "Hard Times" (the movie with Charles Bronson) undercurrent running through their fabric.

There's a little bit of the "Neighborhood" in just about everyone, regardless of the type of neighborhood they grew up in. I'm glad I grew up in Jersey! Would I recommend growing up there to others?

Ah, closed ciruit - those were the days!

Dad and I went with my Grandfather to see Leonard-Duran (from Montreal) on closed circuit at the civic center in Hartford. Starling was on the local live undercard.

We had a partialy obstructed view of the closed circuit screen and the view of the live ring wasn't much better. Good memories though.

Okay, I've got it now. Thank you for the screen capture . The picture makes changing the settings a snap.

Now I can see all of the posts and yeah, there sure are a lot of posts .

It's all great reading, though. If you want to read boxing news, good articles are sort of few and far in-between these days. It's nice to see plenty of action going on - "Inside the Ropes."

Good memories, absolutely. I went with my father and grandfather to several fights when I was a kid. It great to have three generations together (the women stayed at home) for a night at the fights. Whether its live or closed circuit, the live crowd atmosphere can produce some memorable nights.
