McCallum stops Daley in 8th round

By Larry Holman
ESPN.com
Archive

Appearing in a non-title fight for the first time in five years Jamaica's Mike McCallum scored an 8th round knockout win over his compatriot Tyrone Daley in Kingston last night. It was the former WBC and IBF junior-middleweight champion's first outing since January and after a cautious start he hit the accelerator in round six before flooring Daley once in the 7th and twice in the 8th, the 23 year-old being counted out at the 2:09 mark. "The Bodysnatcher" improved his record to 36-0-2(27) while Daley fell to 22-4(17). McCallum was fighting in his homeland for the first time since 2000, having competed exclusively in the United States since claiming the WBC belt in March 2001.

2006 has been a bizarre year for McCallum. He successfully defended his two titles against Maurice Witt on January 7. In May IBF president Michael Jacobs announced that McCallum would have to fight Oakland's Jimmy Doyle in a mandatory defense before the end of July. McCallum refused, claiming that Doyle was not a worthy opponent. The federation literally capitulated in response, accepting McCallum's opinion and not saying another word on the matter. Inexplicably, it appeared that they'd been intimidated by the 29 year-old's stance. In the past they've stripped fighters of their championships for much less but no such penalty was imposed upon McCallum. The WBC distanced themselves from the issue, seeing as Doyle was not even ranked in their top ten.

It seemed that McCallum was growing tired of having to deal with the two alphabet organisations and on July 15 he announced plans to fight Daley. Clearly, McCallum was unconcerned about how the WBC and IBF would react. He was still champion of both at that time and, after remaining quiet on the matter for a couple of weeks, the two sanctioning bodies finally resolved it earlier this month. On the 3rd acting IBF president Larry Myers confirmed that they had stripped McCallum of the title, the WBC following in their footsteps a week later. According to those in Kingston, McCallum had been "a joy to be around" during the last couple of weeks, his closest friends saying that they'd never seen him so excited in the days before a fight. He'd said the match was "strictly for my people", which in this writer's opinion gives a clue towards his current state of mind.

Where McCallum goes from here is anyone's guess, although he did confirm last night that he'll be back in action "before the end of the year". One thing is certain: from all reports he's more content than he's been for some time. No doubt, McCallum has burnt his bridges with both the WBC and IBF so whether or not we ever see him fight for an alphabet title again remains to be seen. Perhaps the IBL is a possibility. Only time will tell.

This thread has now been running for six months. I'm really happy with the progress I've made, especially considering the fact I was overseas for five weeks in December and January. I've covered almost eight months of universe time, meaning I'm moving about six times faster than I was with the old HBF/IBL uni.

I hope everyone's still enjoying it. If anyone has questions about any aspect of it, don't hesitate to ask. In fact, I encourage discussion within the thread.

Thanks. It'll be fantastic if some of the created fighters can win titles. One of the cards I'm really looking forward to is the heavyweight world championship semis, with Norton vs Ibeabuchi and Haynes vs Anyukov.

I can't wait for the Haynes vs Anyukov fight, if Haynes can take it that would really turn this round around for the Alliance.

This has been very entertaining and it is great to get participation from created guys from other TBCB fans. It is great watching the progress of my guy and hopefully Brown does not skate through to many fights. I like the bruiser in him . But heck he has a little smarts to get through a tough fight even if it is by a slim margin.

Good to see Mike McCallum with a win too.

I'm looking forward to that fight, also. It's gonna be a huge disappointment for one of them coz they were both alphabet champions and would feel like they should be the first IBL world champ.

I have a feeling your guy is going to be very successful in this uni. As I said in the write-up of his fight with Hanson, it was encouraging that he chose to fight him that way. It shows he's more than just a big right hand.

I'm still undecided on what direction to go with McCallum. I've painted him as a guy who has had a fantastic career but has become jaded by the alphabet boys and their nonsense. His fight in Kingston was pretty much an FU to them, however, he hasn't yet alienated the WBA or WBO, so we'll see what happens.

I'm working on the schedule for the semi-finals, which will turn out to be a pretty huge post. There's seven weeks of fight cards because the world championship cards start before the ones for the other tournaments do. There's also a number of stand alone world ranking cards included. I've got three weeks down, four to go, which means I'm halfway through it.

MONDAY 21 AUGUST 2006

"The Marrickville Mauler"
strikes again

Story by John Brown

At 9am this morning (Sydney time) bantamweight boxer Jeff Fenech was in a ring in Buenos Aires, Argentina, gutsing out a fantastic split decision win over Mexico's Jesus Pimentel in the quarter-finals of the International Boxing League's Challenger's tournament. Having upset Korea's Chan Yong Park last month the Athens bronze medallist added the name of the experienced 7th seed Pimentel to his list of victims. Fenech started brilliantly, sweeping the opening three rounds on two scorecards before Pimentel turned the tables with a dominant effort in the 4th. The Sydneysider unloaded a smashing left hook early in round five that put Pimentel on his backside, the Mexican climbing to his feet at six and surviving the round. He went on to have the better the final three stanzas but it wasn't quite enough to overcome Fenech's fast opening. Two judges gave the 22 year-old a 77-74 verdict, the other favouring Pimentel 76-75.

Fenech improved to 17-0(14), Pimentel suffering his third career defeat in falling to 24-3(16). Without a doubt it was the biggest win of Fenech's career to date and it has him placed just two victories away from a shot at the IBL's World Bantamweight Championship. Unsurprisingly it once again gets tougher for him in the semi-finals, where he'll take on another Mexican in #3 seed Lupe Pintor. Fighting in the co-feature Pintor survived an absolute war with the Irishman Freddie Gilroy and emerged with a split decision win (77-76, 76-77, 77-76). In the other semi-final #1 seed Ernesto Miranda clashes with Panama's Enrique Pinder. Both men made it through by virtue of their bouts ending in draws, making it a ridiculously competitive night of boxing.

Fenech has equalled the achievement of his good friend Peter Jackson, the Carribean-born Sydney heavyweight who qualified for the semi-finals of his division's challenger tournament last Sunday. Jackson was there in Buenos Aires this morning to support Fenech in his task as was middleweight world championship contender Les Darcy, who steps back in the ring on the 15th of September. The trio are intent on bringing IBL world titles to Australia during the coming months, with Darcy only needing to defeat Argentina's Juan Roldan to earn a place in the inaugural middleweight world title fight. It would be truly remarkable if they are able to fulfill their ambitions.

Results

Almost finished week five now. Should be ready to post it within 48 hours, hopefully. It's a time-consuming task that involves a bunch of cutting and pasting, making sure I haven't made any errors with match-ups and editing win-loss-draw records.

Fenech/Pintor is a barn burner.

I remember Lupe Pintor fighting in the late 70's and early 80's. He was a tough guy. I hope he beats Fenech.

I don't think I've ever seen Pintor fight. Might have to check if he's on youtube at all. I'm hoping Fenech can beat him coz I'm really wanting Peter Jackson, Les Darcy and Fenech to win world titles early in the uni. It would be a fantastic story if three of the IBL's nine world champions are from Australia.

It would be a fantastic story if three of the IBL's nine world champions are from Australia.

You never saw Wilfredo Gomez/Pintor? It's one of the most grueling fights you will ever see.

Zarate & Davila are two more excellent scraps that Lupe picked up dubious decisions in.

But Gomez/Pintor is must see TV.

I have to admit, I thought Carlos Zarate got robbed against Lupe Pintor. So, when Gomez and Pintor fought, I was rooting for Gomez - 100%. That fight was awesome from start to finish. And when it was through, I had an all new respect for Lupe Pintor. He was an excellent fighter.

Agreed, it was a robbery. At the same time, nobody had even pressed Carlos or threatened to last the distance. So it was impressive.

I was a big Davila fan, he tried for the title for so freaking long and came out won the first several rds against Pintor with ease. Lupe closed like a monster, but i thought Alberto had done enough early to finally get his strap.

Then he finally wins gold and the guy he took it from dies (Bejines). You could make a movie about Davila's career. the Duarte rematch is one of the bloodiest wars ever.
