REOPENING THIS WEEKEND!! I've received a few PMs concerning the status of this uni. As many of you know, three weeks ago, my hard drive crashed and had to be replaced. After many hours of toil, I've pretty much restored all my data, including the material for this uni.
So, barring the unforseen, I'll be back with postings this coming Sundays. The big issues pending is if Patterson will defend against Marciano---you'll find out Sunday!!! Thanks for all your patience and support while by uni was on life support. ![]() |

NEW YORK DAILY EXPRESS July 15, 1957 PATTERSON TO DEFEND TITLE AGAINST BRIT CHAMP Bypasses Marciano and Top Contenders By Arnie Gold Ending more than a month of speculation, Hans Reuter, president of the Universal Boxing Organization (UBO), announced that his sanctioning body has approved a meeting between heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson and Henry Cooper who holds the British Commonwealth title. The match will be held at London's Wembley Stadium on September 18th.
Cooper who is ranked fifth by the UBO was selected over former world champion Rocky Marciano who is undefeated in fifty fights. Marciano returned to the ring after retiring two years ago. Last month he scored a unanimous decision over Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson and is currently ranked third among contenders for Patterson's crown. In addition to Marciano, Patterson also passed over three other top five fighters when he selected Cooper as his next opponent. Zora Folley, Ingemar Johansson, and Eddie Machen are also ranked above Cooper. Cooper's selection has caused some controversy in the ever-turbulent boxing world. Marciano's manager, Al Weill, was openly critical of the UBO's sanctioning of the bout. "Hans Reuter's going too far here. Boxing fans want to see Patterson put his crown on the line against Rocky-not some second rate British bleeder. Cus D'Amato (Patterson's manager) is just sitting on the title and the UBO is letting him get away with it." Under UBO rules, a division champion must defend his title four times in a twelve month period with two of the defenses against the top contender. This year, Patterson defended agains Jackson and Hal Carter, whom he knocked out in four rounds last month. Both Jackson and Carter were ranked in the UBO's top slot when Patterson met them. Skip Bailey, a boxing writer for World Boxing Review, said that while Patterson's decision to defend against Cooper might be unpopular in some boxing quarters, it is a wise decision. "Cus D'Amato had demonstrated once again that he's a brilliant strategist both inside and outside the ring. Patterson's already fought two top contenders so he's satisfied the UBO on that score. "Jackson and Carter really were questionable top contenders, and Floyd had a pretty easy time with both of them. Cooper is the weakest of the pack, and this is pretty much a free pick for Patterson. "I'm sure that Cus figures that Maricano, Folley, Machen, and Johansson will start knocking each other off before the end of the year, and he might be able to get Patterson at least one more easy fight before he's required to meet the top contender." D'Amato declined to comment beyond claiming that he and his fighter are just following the standards set by the UBO. Not A Happy Man!: Al Weill (below), manager Rocky Marciano, accused UBO president Hans Reuter of letting Cus D'Amato tie up the heavyweight championship |

Good to see you back up and running. I also like seeing that Cus was thinking along the same route as I was. Definitely, a smart move on their part. I would of preferred to see Patterson/Ingo since I think it would of been a better fight but this is still a good one. This fight should do big business over in England. As for Rocky's manager complaint, how about he shut up and put Rocky in against a real challenge instead of trying to sneak into an undeserved title shot off one win over Hurricane Jackson.

I also think Henry has a punchers chance in this one.

I've mentioned this before, but it was a good while back, before the long hiatus...according to the biography of Patterson I read, D'Amato was negotiating with Cooper for the defense prior to the first Johannsson fight. Cooper wanted too much money and they only had in mind a tune up for Johannsson anyway, so they chose the easier Brian London instead. You do have to think that Cooper would have a puncher's chance.

THE BRITISH BOXING BULLETIN July 20, 1957 WORLD TITLE SHOT COULD COST 'ENRY COMMONWEALTH CROWN By Wally Wilkens The recent annoucement that Floyd Patterson will defend his world title against Commonwealth champ Henry Cooper might have a bittersweet undertone. Cooper who was scheduled to defend his belt against Canada's James J. Parker this August could be stripped of his crown by the British Boxing Council for failure to defend it.
Prior to sigining to challenge Patterson in a September at Wembley Stadium, Cooper's camp had agreed to meet Parker. No contract was signed, but the match had been sanction by the boxing council. With Cooper now abandoning his defense against Parker to prepare for Patterson, 'Enry might have also in effect abandoned his Commonwealth belt. A full meeting of the council has been called for later this week for the express purpose of resolving the matter. One commissioner, who wished to remain anonymous, offered the following observation. "All of Britain is thrilled that Cooper will be fighting for the world title, and we pray that he brings the championship to the Isles. Still, in fairness to other British fighters, the Commonwealth can't be put on ice." Should the title be declared vacant, it's uncertain how Cooper's successor would be selected. Presently, Jamacia's Joe Bygraves and Welshman Joe Erskine are ranked as the top contenders, and a match between the two for the championship is a strong possibility. That, however, would leave Parker out of the mix and might create problems since he was in line for a shot at the title. An elimination series including Bygraves, Erskine, Parker, and another ranked heavyweight could be a more palatable alternative. The fourth participant might be either Brian London or Dick Richardson, although both fought poorly in their last outings. Should Cooper be victorious against Patterson, he'd be only the second Brit to wear the world heavyweight mantle. Sixty years ago Cornwall's Bob Fitzsimmons took the world title from Jim Corbett by way of a 14th round knockout in Carson City, Nevada. |

Maybe have Bygraves and Erskine fight an eliminator and the winner fights Parker for the strap, seeing as he had already been promised a shot at it.
I love this uni, professor. I look forward to each new post you make in it. It's great stuff that has helped to encourage and inspire me with my own uni. Can't wait to see if 'Enry shocks the world.
