World Featherweight Championship Bout…15 rounds…Melbourne, Australia

Tim Hegarty…Champion
  • Australia
  • Record: 29-4-1 (10)
  • Age: 23
  • Career stage: prime
  • Conditioning: top condition

Tommy Warren…#6 contender
  • United States
  • Record: 59-7-1 (38)
  • Age: 34
  • Career stage: end
  • Conditioning: top condition

Fight Stats
  • Result: Hegarty UD15
  • Knockdowns scored: Hegarty 1, Warren 1
  • Punching accuracy: Hegarty 438/1524 (29%), Warren 202/596 (34%)
  • Scoring: 145-138, 143-141, 147-137 all for Hegarty

Fight recap
Hegarty came into the fight with some big advantages. He was the champ, he was 13 years younger, and he was fighting in his own country. Both fighters appeared to be in top shape.

The first three rounds easily went to Hegarty and he dropped Warren for a three count in the 2nd round. Warren turned things around in the 4th when he knocked Hegarty down with a quick left hook. Hegarty was up at the count of six. The rest of the fight was pretty much all Hegarty, although Warren definitely won the 9th round.

The story of this fight was the punch count. Hegarty threw an amazing number of punches, almost 1600. Even though Warren was more accurate, Hegarty landed over twice as many, 438 to 202. Hegarty easily won a unanimous decision and successfully defended his title for the first time.

Tommy Warren retires

34 year old Tommy Warren has announced his retirement the day after he lost to Tim Hegarty for the World Featherweight title.

Record: 59-8-1 (38)

Real record per BOXREC.COM: 18-6-3 (6)

Courtesy of CYBERBOXINGZONE.COM:

BORN 1865; Los Angeles, California; (Some sources report San Francisco, California); Fought out of Louisville, Kentucky
DIED February 13 1904; San Francisco, California (pneumonia); (Some sources report February 10 1904)
HEIGHT 5-4
WEIGHT 116-121 lbs

Warren was a feisty, scrappy, tough little dynamo who was full of fight and carried a very stiff punch; During his career, he was the Featherweight Champion of the Pacific Coast and Featherweight Champion of America

It seemed that trouble followed Tommy wherever he went; He was involved in saloon brawls, street fights, and murder

During his career, Warren defeated such men as Arthur Majesty, Tommy Barnes, Bob Haight, Tommy Danforth, John Van Heest and Jack Havlin

World Light Heavyweight Championship Bout…15 rounds…Cincinnati, Ohio

Philadelphia Jack O’Brien…Champion
  • United States
  • Record: 18-2 (5)
  • Age: 22
  • Career stage: pre-prime
  • Conditioning: top condition

Jack Root…#2 contender
  • United States
  • Record: 13-1-1 (4)
  • Age: 24
  • Career stage: pre-prime
  • Conditioning: under trained

Fight Stats
  • Result: O’Brien UD15
  • Knockdowns scored: none
  • Punching accuracy: O’Brien 519/850 (61%), Root 171/999 (17%)
  • Scoring: 145-139, 146-138, 147-137 all for O’Brien

Fight recap
As the fight got underway, O’Brien appeared to be in much better shape than Root. After the first three rounds, which O’Brien won, the story of the fight began to emerge; O’Brien was the more accurate puncher and had a very solid defense. By the end of the 8th round, it was apparent that Root was outclassed and would need a knockout to win. However, since he couldn’t penetrate O’Brien’s defense, the likelihood of such an ending was remote. Root would end the fight only landing 17% of his punches.

Although he threw more punches than O’Brien, Root’s strategy, if it can be called that, was to throw a flurry of punches and then clinch. O’Brien appeared very frustrated during the middle to late rounds.

O’Brien took the 15th round off, obviously tired and flustered. Root won the round but it was way too little and much too late to matter. O’Brien easily won a unanimous decision and successfully defended his title for the first time.

World Welterweight Championship Bout…15 rounds…Detroit, Michigan

Rube Ferns…Champion
  • United States
  • Record: 19-0-1 (9)
  • Age: 26
  • Career stage: prime
  • Conditioning: top condition

Jim Franey…#2 contender
  • United States
  • Record: 27-3-3 (20)
  • Age: 27
  • Career stage: prime
  • Conditioning: top condition

Fight Stats
  • Result: Franey KO6
  • Knockdowns scored: Ferns 0, Franey 1
  • Punching accuracy: Ferns 173/479 (33%), Franey 54/166 (40%)
  • Scoring: 50-46, 50-46, 50-46 all for Ferns

Fight recap
It was a sloppy fight from the beginning, with lots of wrestling and head butting. Ferns was the busier fighter, connecting with some good combinations, but Franey did some effective counterpunching. In the 3rd round, Franey received a gash on his upper lip, caused by a head butt. The referee briefly stopped the fight and the ringside doctor gave his ok to continue the fight.

By the end of the 5th round, Ferns appeared to have won every round. Rounds four and five were brutal on Franey, as Ferns landed several heavy combinations.

Ferns landed a couple of heavy combos in to start off round six. Ferns then went to the body with a right hand and Franey countered with a powerful left hook, flooring Ferns. Ferns tried to get up but only could make it to his knees. Franey won by a knockout and took the welterweight crown from Ferns.

Sharkey’s head appeared clear when round 5 started. He dropped Ruhlin for a five count two minutes into the round. Thirty seconds later, Sharkey landed a dynamite body blow and Ruhlin went down quick. He never made it back up.

Fight recap
After a round one feeling out session, Lalor knocked down McCoy in the 2nd with a right cross. McCoy made it to his feet at the count of eight. Lalor tried to finish off McCoy, but McCoy managed to last out the round. Lalor continued his barrage of punches in round three, but an unsteady McCoy again weathered the storm.

37 seconds into round four, Lalor knocked down McCoy for a second time, this time with some vicious body shots. McCoy was up at seven, but this time Lalor wasn’t going to let him off of the hook. Lalor hit McCoy with a short, quick left hook, and McCoy again hit the canvas. Although McCoy made it to his feet at the count of eight, the referee had seen enough and stopped the fight.

Lalor won the fight by TKO and is the new middleweight champion.

The late Chris Greyvenstein was a member of IBRO (The International Boxing Research Organization). His book, 'The Fighters' is the best historical treatment of South African boxing extant, and a great source of pics.
The book provided a lot of information of Wolf Bendoff and also Couper, the first South African star prizefighter.

Casper Leon has a lot of losses. He must have lost to someone repeatedly becasue I can't think of eight guys at that weight that could beat him.

Leon lost 4 times to Jimmy Barry; in the years 1893, 1895, 1896 and 1899.
