Monday, September 24, 1903
PBR news: 11th ranked featherweight, Solly Smith, of the United States, has announced his retirement. The announcement came after a 12 round split decision win against #8 Billy Whistler. Previous to that fight, Smith had lost four straight bouts.
Smith won the PBR featherweight championship on February 8, 1901, with a 15 round split decision win over the champ, Tim Hegarty. In December of that same year, Smith successfully defended his title against #4 contender, Will Curley. On April 25th, 1902, Smith lost his title to #1 ranked Oscar Gardner. Smith was knocked out in the 8th round.
