Jr. Middle Quarter Finals

Wednesday, July 8th 1992
Civic Center, Providence, RI
Vinny Pazienza 34-7 (24) RI WBA
vs.
Jorge Castro 72-3-3 (50)

- Castro was a 3-2 favorite.
- The 3 judges were from Italy, USA-California, and Mexico. The referee was from New York.
- Pazienza was missing his usual exuberance during ring introductions and the lethargy continued during the fight. In round 2 Pazienza went down and barely beat the count at 9.
- The often unused, and underrated, boxing skills of Pazienza were on display in round 3. Castro continued with his bullish rushes and wild overhand rights, but Pazienza’s began to sidestep and counter.
- A right wobbled Pazienza in round 4 and he was on unsteady legs for most of that round.
- An accidental headbutt in round 5 opened up a cut above Castro’s right eye.
- Both fighters took turns fouling the other throughout the fight. After 6 rounds Ringside Expert Richard Plunkett had it for Castro by 5 points, 59-54. Punches landed favored Castro 90-66.
- The Pazmaniacs who had filled the Providence, Rhode Island Civic Center to the full capacity of 14,000 continued to cheer themselves hoarse while rooting for Pazienza.
- At the start of round 7 a small mouse could be seen under Pazienza’s right eye (2). Pazienza was having his best round of the fight when he was caught by a Castro combination. A disgusted Pazienza pounded the canvas with his gloves before rising at “6”.
- Pazienza was cut over the right eye in round 8.
- Pazienza tried over the final 4 rounds to turn the fight around, but it just wasn’t his night. Ringside Expert Richard Plunkett had it for Castro 119-108. Punches landed favored Castro 231 to 171. The face of Pazienza was a battered mess at the bell with his right eye half shut (12) and a closed cut over it. The 3 official judges had it: Mexico judge 117-110, Italy judge 117-114, and California judge 118-108 all for Castro.
- The classy Pazienza applauded the decision, took the microphone and encouraged his fans to do the same, which they did in response to his request.

Tough one for Paz! We still see him at just about any bout in the area (especialy those over in Rhode Island). It's fun to see that trademark pork pie hat at ringside.

Thursday, July 16th 1992
Hotel Portosole; San Remo, Italy
Gianfranco Rosi 55-5-1 (16) Italy IBF
vs.
Pat Lawlor 21-1 (6) California

- Rosi was a 4-1 favorite.
- Rosi's conditioning was "Completely unprepared". His recent March 29 knockout loss to Terry Norris led to his being unable to spar during training and his overall training preperation was far less than 100%.
- Fresh off his upset of Hilton in Montreal, the 4-1 underdog, was looking forward to shocking the experts once again.
- Te referee was Kazumasa Kuwata of Japan. The 3 judges were from Panama, Mexico, and Spain.
- In a sloppy pedestrian like fight, Gianfranco Rosi cut Lawlor in round 8, knocked him down in round 10, and finally stopped him round 11.
- At the time of the stoppage Ringside Expert Roy Paeth had Rosi in front 99-91. The punches landed favored Rosi 240-136.
- Gianfranco Rosi will next fight Jorge Castro in a September WBA / IBF unification fight. That fight will take place in Italy, with the Terry Norris vs. Chris Pyatt fight on the undercard.
Gianfranco Rosi TKO10 Pat Lawlor (defends IBF title)

It's good that he is still involved in the sport. Vinny Pazienza was a great a boxing showman and is underrated. Check out the above link that shows two amatuer fights of his against the Russians. One of them he gets robbed pretty bad in. I think it was after this fight that he decided to turn pro.

I don't remember the last time I saw an amatuer fight as entertaining as the one Pazienza gets robbed in. He showed some great boxing skills in that fight.

Saturday, September 26th 1992
Palazzatto dello Sport; Perugia, Italy
Gianfranco Rosi 56-5-1 (17) Italy IBF
vs.
Jorge Castro 73-3-3 (50) WBA

- Castro was a 3-2 favorite.
- The referee was from California. The 3 judges from Finland, South Korea, and Connecticut.
- Rosi was boxing well until Castro dropped him for the count of 3 in round 6. After the knockdown Rosi fought an extremely defensive fight, but still seemed to do enough to win. Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto had Rosi the winner 115-113. Punches landed favored Rosi 260- 203. The 3 official judges had it: Finland judge 118-110, South Korea judge 115-113, and the Connecticut judge 115-112, all for the winner by unanimous decision…..GIANFRANCO ROSI!!!
Gianfranco Rosi Wu12 Jorge Castro (unifies the WBA and IBF titles)
AND
Terry Norris 34-3-1 (17) CA WBC
vs.
Chris Pyatt 37-3 (29) England WBO
- Norris was 2-1 favorite.
- The referee was from Puerto Rico. The 3 judges from Italy, England, and New Zealand.
- Norris took control early, but Pyatt got his own licks in also, as evidenced by the growing mound under Norris’ left eye 22% closed.
- By the start of round 6 Pyatt was beginning to take a beating and an eventually stoppage loss for the Englishman seemed inevitable. With his own right eye 17% closed swelling badly, Pyatt was struggling to land against the superb Norris defense.
- Pyatt brought the crowd to their feet when one of his combination got through and deposited Terry Norris on the canvas for a 6 count!
- After 7 rounds Ringside Expert Javier Aguirre Flores had Norris in front by 2 points, 67-65. Punches landed favored Norris 201-123.
- Norris quicly recovered from the knockdown and resumed taking Pyatt to school. The right eye of Pyatt was 54% closed. In Norris’ corner, cutman Jim Strickland did an excellent job on Norris’ eye and it was now only 15% closed.
- After Pyatt went down again in round 10 and was taking tons of punishment the referee wisely stopped the fight and pulled Norris off him.
Terry Norris TKO10 Chris Pyatt (unifies WBC and WBO titles)

Terry Norris and Gianfranco Rosi will now fight in December 1992 for all 4 title belts and the Jr. Middle Weight World Championship.

Friday, December 4th 1992
Stade Louis II; Monte Carlo, Monaco
Michele Mastodonato 17-2 (9) Italy
vs. (8 Rounds)
Mark Breland 30-3-1 (22) New York (post-prime)

- This was Mark Breland’s first fight since his upset TKO loss against Jorge Vaca 14 months ago. Mastrodonato was on a 9 fight winning streak and little was known about the Italian who held the ITA title. Mastrodonato was hoping a win would vault him into an all Italy Jr. Middle Weight Championship match with Gianfranco Rosi, should Rosi defeat Terry Norris.
- Mastrodonato proved to be a very difficult first fight back for Breland and after 5 of the scheduled 8 rounds had been completed, Ringside Expert Markus Heinsohn had Breland losing by 3 points, 46-49. Punches landed favored Mastrodonato 144-86.
- Knowing that his fighter was probably behind on the judges cards, Breland’s trainer Joey Fariello implored him to let his punches go. Breland did just that when a crackling uppercut caught Mastrodonato flush and placed him on the canvas! The Italian lurched to his feet quickly at 3, but was soon back on the floor.
- Breland kept his foot on the gas pedal during the fight’s final two rounds. With 2:02 remaining in the fight the Italian dug a hook into Breland’s ribcage that floored the New York fighter for the full 10 count!!!
Michele Mastrodonato KO8 Mark Breland

[A back and forth fight ending in a dramatic KO and significant upset to get the show started!]

14# Matthew Hilton 34-5-2 (23) Canada
vs.
24# Ron Amundsen 22-9-1 (8) New Jersey
- After being shockingly kayoed in 1 round, 6 months ago by a fighter (Pat Lawlor) who had only 5 wins by KO or TKO to his credit out of 20 wins, many were saying it was time for the 27 year old Hilton to call it a career. A career that had really begun 22 years earlier when Matthew Hilton had his first boxing match as a 5 years old. Hilton was looking forward to getting his career back on track with a win over the 24# ranked Amundsen.
- Originally from Chicago, “The Stomin’ Mormon” Ron Amundsen now lives and trains in New Jersey. Having lost 6 of his past 8 fights, many questioned how Amundsen could still be ranked 24#. His last big win had been in 1990 when he W12 over Arthur Serwano and capatured the USBA title in the process. Since that big win Amundsen has been put in tough with 6 different contenders or prospects and been on the losing end each time.
- Other than a heavily bleeding cut lip sustained in round 7, Hilton pretty much steamrolled over “The Stormin’ Mormon”. Amundsen was knocked down in rounds 9 and 10, while coming out on the short end of most exchanges. The 3 judges had it 99-88, 99-87, and 98-89 all for Hilton. On average Hilton landed 80 punches per round compared to only 19 for Amundsen.

Jr. Middle Weight WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 12-4-92 (undercard)

21# Andy Till 17-2 (7) England BRI
vs. (12 Rounds)
5# Chris Pyatt 37-4 (29) England

- This was a huge step up in class for Andy Till, who had fought outside of London in only 2 of his previous 19 fights. His biggest win to date had been last September when he won a 12 round decision over Wally Swift Jr. to capture the British Jr. Middle title. The same title that had been held earlier in the year by Pyatt, only to be vacated when he challenged for the WBO title and defeated John David Jackson.
- With his 5# World Ranking, Pyatt had reasonable ambitions of challenging for the World Championship.
- Till put forth a game effort, but was no match for Chris Pyatt. The 5# contender was to strong and had far too many skills. Pyatt systematically wore Till down. The highlight of the fight for Till was when an accidental headbutt left Pyatt with a right eye that was 38% closed.
- The swollen eye only increased the ferocity of Pyatt’s attack in round 6. At 2:46 of the round the referee mercifully saved Till from further assault.

Jr. Middle Weight WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 12-4-92 (undercard)

10# Laurent Boudani 22-1 (20) France EBU
vs. (12 Rounds)
16# Lloyd Honeyghan 39-6-2 (25) England (post-prime)

- The Frenchman, Laurent Boudani, was a rising star in Europe. Less than a week before meeting Honeyghan he had won the European title with an impressive round 3 KO of Jean-Claude Fontana. A silver medalist at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, professional boxing expectations were high for Boudani. Lloyd Honeyghan, although past his prime [post-prime rated], would be his most formidable opponent to date.
- Lloyd Honeyghan had shown while being destroyed by Chris Pyatt in his last fight that his best days were well behind him.
- The talent of the 26 year old Boudani cannot be denied. The European Champion is for real and proved that in a complete destruction of Lloyd Honeyghan. After a feeling out first round, Boudani dished out a beating until ending putting the Englishman down for the count at 2:25 of round 5.

4# Vinny Pazienza 34-8 (24) Rhode Island
vs. (12 Rounds for Mandatory 1# Contender)
8# Pat Lawlor 21-2 (6) California

- There was some controversy going into this fight because it was recognized as being for the Mandatory 1# Contender rating. Many within the boxing community argued that the loser of the Norris-Rosi fight should be given an opportunity to fight in the Mandatory 1# Contender eliminator. Especially if their Championship battle was close or should end in controversy. It was also pointed out that 4 fighters, not including Norris and Rosi, are currently rated ahead of either Pazienza or Lawlor (Jorge Castro 3#, Chris Pyatt 5#, John David Jackson 6#, and Verno Phillips 7#). Be that as it may, the current World Championship rules state that “a fight between two contenders both rated in the top 10#, can be designated as an eliminator, with the winner earning the Mandatory 1# Contender rating.”
- Jorge Castro was seated ringside and in interviews expressed his disappointment in not being in the eliminator to be the new Mandatory 1# Contender, especially since he had beaten Pazienza. Public pressure may force this rule to be changed.
- Pat Lawlor in 1992 had shocked almost everyone when he knocked out Matthew Hilton in the first round, at the Montreal Forum. He then was stopped in round 11 by Gianfranco Rosi in an unsuccessful attempt to win the IBF belt.
- Vinny Pazienza turned back the clock to his amateur days when he displayed excellent defensive skills. Utilizing fast feet, while counter punching the Lawlor misses, Pazienza fought with a patient intelligence and energy not shown in his last fight, when he lost a 10 round decision against Jorge Castro.
- Lawlor kept it competitive, but was always a step or two behind Pazienza. He was never able to figure out the Pazienza style and adjust his game plan accordingly. A weary Lawlor was knocked down in round 11. The decision was unanimous for Pazienza: 119-108, 119-108, and 116-113.
- Vinny Pazienza now has a guaranteed fight with the Jr. Middle Weight World Champion in 1993.

Jr. Middle Weight WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 12-4-92

1# Terry Norris 35-3-1 (17) CA WBC WBO
vs. (15 Rounds for Jr. Middle Weight World Championship)
2# Gianfranco Rosi 57-5-1 (17) Italy IBF WBA

- All of the available 18,500 seats were filled.
- The fight was moved from Italy to Monaco after the camp of Norris demanded that the fight take place at a more neutral site.
- The referee was from Australia. The 3 judges were from Panama, Canada, and France.
- Both fighters entered the ring in excellent condition. Norris focused on his power in training, with mixed results.
ROUND 1: (Rosi 18-12)
ROUND 2: (Rosi 24-22)
ROUND 3: (Norris 27-18)
After 3 rounds the scorecard of Ringside Expert Tom Trunzo had Rosi in front 30-27.
ROUND 4: After boxing on his toes in the first 3 rounds Norris aggressively fought on the inside and produced positive results immediately. A blistering Norris combination put Rosi on the canvas where he was counted out at 1:11.
- Immediately after the fight, the braintrust of Norris expressed that they were looking forward to fighting the new 1# Mandatory Contender, Vinny Pazienza, early in 1993.

vs.
Joe Gatti 17-1 (13) Canada
