Middle Weight 1992 World Championship
Friday, December 11th, 1992
The Spectrum; Philadelphia, PA 2# Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins 21-1 (15) WBO WBA vs. (15 Rounds for the Middle Weight World Championship) 1# James “Lights Out” Toney 32-0-4 (22) MI IBF WBC · The referee was John Keane from England. The 3 judges were from Australia, New Jersey, and Canada. · The odds were EVEN. · Both fighters weighed in at 160 pounds and were in peak condition. · Hopkins came into the ring wearing his executioners mask, but Toney only scowled at him and made a slashing of the throat gesture. Heavy security was on hand to ensure that the fight did not take place before the bell. · Hopkins got off first with his punches and Toney was shaken by a big hook before the fight was 90 seconds old. Toney fell back into a neutral corner and Hopkins was on him like a kid opening presents on Christmas morning. Hopkins mixed his attack to the body, causing Toney to bend over. Then Hopkins quickly went back to the head, snapping back the head of Toney. Hopkins then moved away from the corner appearing to let Toney out. As soon as the trapped Toney attempted to move out to the side he was met by a fusillade of punches! Toney’s hands dropped to his side and he appeared to be out on his feet. The referee then jumped in and saved the beaten Toney from further punches at 2:40 of round 1! Toney complained that he could continue as did his corner, however the stoppage appeared to be a good one. The winner and undisputed Middle Weight World Champion….. BERNARD HOPKINS!!! Bernard Hopkins TKO1 James Toney (unifies all 4 belts IBF WBC WBO WBA and is the undisputed Middle Weight World Champion) |

Philipshalle; Dusseldorf, Germany 5# Gracianno Rocchigiani 35-1-1 (16) Germany vs. 13# Dario Matteoni 29-6-2 (21) Argentina · Rocchigiani was a 2-1 favorite. · With his home country fans chanting “ROCKY! ROCKY! Throughout the fight, Graciano Rocchigiani put on a dominating display of fistic talent. The German fought like a tenacious bulldog and never allowed his Argentinean counterpart a moments rest. By the start of round 4 Matteoni’s arms had dropped to protect his reddening body. Rocchigiani scored a flash knockdown in round 4, which foreshadowed what was on route. · Matteoni went down hard in rounds 5 and 8, but displayed plenty of heart and fought back upon rising. · Final punches landed numbers provided further evidence of Rocchigiani’s dominance 348 to 140. The 3 judges, all had it for Rocchigiani: 99-88, 99-88, and 99-89. · Next for the German will be fight with Leeonzer Barber for the WBO title. Light Heavyweight Title Shot Eliminator Round
Saturday, June 6th, 1992
Halle Georges Carpentier; Paris, France 15# Christophe Tiozzo 30-2-1 (20) France vs. 7# Drake Thadzi 25-5-2 Massachusetts · Thadzi was a 3-2 favorite. · Both fighters returned to their corners at the end of round 3 with a cut over the right eye. Tiozzo’s was “bad”, while Thadzi’s was merely “bleeding”. · A clash of heads in round 5 turned Thadzi’s cut from “bleeding” to “bad” and additionally caused his eye to swell 30% closed. · Pat Petronelli managed to close Thazdzi’s cut before round 6 started, but at 1:33 the referee stopped the fight due it having reopened. Thadzi complained bitterly about the stoppage claiming that he could still see, but the referee and doctor were of a different opinion. · Tiozzo will now travel to North Dakota and fight Virgil Hill for the WBA title. Christophe Tiozzo TKO6 Drake Thadzi |

Light Heavyweight Title Shot Eliminator Round
Sunday, June 7th, 1992
Memorial Drive Tennis Courts; Adelaide, Australia 14# Guy Waters 14-3-2 (4) Australia vs. 12# Saul Montana 18-2 (18) Mexico · Waters was a 5-2 favorite. · Rounds 1 and 2 were fought on fairly even terms. The fight turned in Montana’s favor after Waters sustained a “bad” cut to his right eyelid in round 3. · The crowd was on their fight cheering wildly after the light punching Waters (only 4 early stoppage wins in 19 fights) planted a right on the forehead of Montana that sent the Mexican to the canvas face first! · The cut eyelid was bleeding again in round 5 and causing Waters problems with his vision. · In round 7 Waters was sent to the canvas, where he struggled to rise when referee, Billy Males, count reached 8. When the eyelid of Waters was spouting blood in round 8 the referee was forced to stop the contest. · The all action punching Saul Montana will return to Australia next month and attempt to upset WBC title holder Jeff Harding. Light Heavyweight Title Shot Eliminator Round
Sunday, June 7th, 1992
Cobo Arena; Detroit, MI 3# Thomas Hearns 51-5-1 (40) Michigan vs. 8# Frank Tate 31-3 (17) Texas
ROUND 2: Hearns 27-24 (Hearns was struggling to get his punches off, when he did Tate was already gone or had a glove up to block. Finally, with less than 45 seconds remaining in the round, the vaunted Hearns right hand got through. Tate remained standing, but was at least momentarily stunned. ROUND 3: Tate 24-14 (Other than a big uppercut, Hearns was on the receiving end of most exchanges and beginning to look all of his 34 years.) ROUND 4: Hearns 35-0 (This was an excellent round for Tommy Hearns. He blasted Tate with hooks, right hands, and uppercuts throughout. Still…Tate withstood all of the punches and Hearns looked to be exhausted at the rounds end.) ROUND 5: Hearns 21-18 (Hearns took a breather, but still managed to win the round. After 5 rounds Ringside Expert Steve McCarthy had Hearns in front 48-47.) ROUND 6: Hearns 20-12 (Right hands from Hearns that had been missing earlier, were now landing.) ROUND 7: Hearns 14-12 (Tate was now tired more so than Hearns.) ROUND 8: Hearns 26-0 (Another good round in the books for Hearns.) ROUND 9: Hearns 28-12 (The “Motor City Cobra” was content to box on the outside, where he effectively countered the Tate misses. The right and left eyes of Tate both had small mouses under them of 7% and 9% closed.) ROUND 10: Hearns 20-16 (More of the same, with Hearns boxing well from the outside.) DECISION: 98-92, 98-92, and 97-93 all for the winner by unanimous decision ….. Thomas Hearns! The Detroit native will now fight Prince Charles Williams for the IBF title. Light Heavyweight Quarter Finals
Friday, July 17th, 1992
Brisbane Entertainment Centre; Brisbane, Australia 1# Jeff Harding 24-1-1 (17) Australia WBC vs. 12# Saul Montana 19-2 (19) Mexico · Harding was a 14-1 favorite. · The bruising rough and tumble Australian was finally starting to gain some respect within boxing circles and had placed himself into the Pound for Pound lists when he spectacularly knocked out Thomas Hearns earlier in the year. With Jeff Harding being a National hero in Australia, the Brisbane Entertainment Centre had quickly sold all 13,221 available seats. · This fight was entertaining for the 5 rounds it lasted. The question was who could take the other guys punches better and Harding won that contest. By the start of round 3 Montana was exhausted. Harding walked through all of the Montana bombs as if they had never happened. The inevitable finally occurred in round 5, with Montana barely moving, as the referee tolled “10!” Jeff Harding KO5 Saul Montana (defends WBC title) Jeff Harding vs. Dennis Andries I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIbzcGWHn90 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC2--yl_mjI&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RarhB0H5R8&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6r2tZLTPl8&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6GZpn1nXGs&feature=related Jeff Harding vs. Dennis Andries II http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQjoLaP3IXk&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtP4lliCQnI&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxBRAMDYeTs&feature=related Jeff Harding vs. Dennis Andries III http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mMYkGlIF-k&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FbPuNhfct0&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYU7t0DpsuA&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck_2sOTZ3ck&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO1--RdTzeI&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p8CJhfZAuM&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1Plo_5HSVw&feature=related |

Light Heavyweight Quarter Finals
Saturday, July 18th, 1992
Thomas & Mack Center; Las Vegas, NV 4# Prince Charles Williams 35-5-2 (25) Ohio IBF (post-prime) vs. 3# Thomas Hearns 52-5-1 (40) Michigan (end) · Hearns was a 2-1 favorite. · The Williams camp promised to turn the fight into a trench war and not allow Hearns to get extension on his punches, while the word out of Detroit was that boxing fans would be treated to the “Motor City Cobra” administering a boxing lesson. · Both fighters entered the ring looking like they were in excellent condition. · The 19,100 seat Thomas & Mack Center was filled to capacity. With so many top notch boxing cards taking place around the world, due to all the tournament fights taking place, tickets were sold for $5 for general admission and $15 for ringside! It was first come first served. Ringside was filled with hardcore boxing fans that never would have been able to sit that close otherwise. · Williams was rattled 20 seconds into round 1, after charging into a right hand. The Ohioan continued his forward assault undeterred though. After 4 rounds Ringside Expert Dan Cuoco had it EVEN 38-38. · Williams was hurt again in round 5, but managed to stay on his feet and weather the storm, while continuing to apply the steady pressure. · In his attempts to force Hearns to fight, and wear down his 34 year old legs, Williams tired himself out. His punches lacked snap by round 7. · After 8 rounds Ringside Expert Dan Cuoco had still had it EVEN, 76-76. The next 4 rounds saw Williams continuing to force the action with mixed results. At the final bell both fighters raised their arms in victory. The faces of both were relatively unmarked. Final punches landed numbers gave the edge to Hearns 290 to 270. The card of Ringside Expert Dan Cuoco read 115-113 for Prince Charles Williams. · The 3 judges had it: Philippines judge 115-114 Hearns, Nevada judge 114-114 EVEN, and Nevada judge 114-114 EVEN…..THIS FIGHT IS A DRAW! · The camp of Prince Charles Williams felt that he had won and it was the reputation of Thomas Hearns that had influenced the judges into scoring it a draw. They were pleased however when informed that as one of the 4 title holders Prince Charles Williams will move on in the tournament to face the winner of the upcoming Virgil Hill-Christophe Tiozzo fight. Light Heavyweight Quarter Finals
Sunday, July 19th, 1992
Bismarck Civic Center; Bismarck, North Dakota 2# Virgil Hill 34-2 (19) North Dakota WBA vs. 7# Christophe Tiozzo 30-2-1 (20) France · Hill was a 5-2 favorite. · The referee was from Panama. The 3 judges were from Ireland, California, and Texas. · Televised on ABC with Alex Wallau and Dan Deirdorf calling the fight. Fans flocked to 315 South Fifth Street in Bismarck, where the 10,100 seat Civic Center was filled to capacity. Virgil Hill entered the ring wearing a Native American headdress, in respect and in tribute to his heritage. · Christophe Tiozzo is a media darling in France and fairly large contingent of his own fans and media had made the long trip across the ocean. · Considered to be a franchise belonging to the entire state of North Dakota, even Governor-Elect Edward Thomas Schafer was in attendance. · The former Olympic boxers put on a show for the boxing purists. There were plenty of feints and counters of counters. The first 4 rounds were fought on mostly even terms, with Hill starting to pull away after that round with his superior conditioning. · A bleeding cut eyelid in round 10 caused some concern to the Hill faithful, but Freddie Roach was able to close the cut. Hill then put the boxing world and fellow light heavyweights on notice that he can punch as well as box, when a counter left hook to Tiozzo’s liver put him on the canvas and unable to beat the 10 count! · At the time of the KO, Ringside Expert Rocco Del Sesto had it closer than most North Dakotan’s did with a 96-95 scorecard for Hill. The 3 official judges at the time of the KO had it much wider at 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94. Light Heavyweight Quarter Finals
Tuesday, July 21st, 1992
Deutschlandhalle; Berlin, Germany 6# Leeonzer Barber 16-1 (10) Michigan WBO vs. 5# Gracianno Rocchigiani 36-1-1 (16) Germany · Barber was a 2-1 favorite. · The referee was from Nevada. The 3 judges were from Puerto Rico, Belgium, and Norway. · In round 4 a bad gash was opened up “literally inside the right eyebrow" of Rocchigiani. Whether the cut was from a punch or head butt could not be determined by replay, however the ruling by the referee was that it was a from a punch. · Barber took the fight to Rocchigiani and had the German reeling with his left eye quickly closing at 35% shut. · At 2:05 of round 6 with Barber increasing his attack, and Rocchigiani unable to see many of the punches coming his way due to the mask of blood covering his face, the referee stopped the fight declaring Barber the winner by TKO. Rocchigiani vehemently complained about the stoppage as did the several thousand Germans who had turned up in force at Berlin’s Deustlandhalle to cheer on their countryman. · Michigan’s Leeonzer Barber will next travel to Australia where he has the unenviable task of meeting Jeff Harding in a September WBO/WBC unification match. Leeonzer Barber TKO6 Graciano Rocchigiani (defends WBO title) |
