Upcoming Week 4# Marquee Fights
With a record of 2-1 USA EAST fights on home turf at Philadelphia's sold out "Spectrum". All 18,000 seats were sold in less than a day. The main event of Mike Tyson 43-1-1 (38) vs. South Africa's rising heavy weight contender Pierre Coetzer 40-3 (27), is expected to provide fireworks, despite Tyson entering the ring as a 4-1 favorite.
Also featured is Light Weight WORLD CHAMPION Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker 30-1 (14) against South Africa's undefeated Dingaan Thobela 29-0-1 (16). Although a non-title fight, this bout has attracted world wide interest. Watching the phenomenal "Pound for Pound" boxing WORLD CHAMPION Whitaker in action has become an event in and of itself. Another featured attraction is undefeated Olympian Kennedy McKinney 20-0-2 (12) vs. fellow undefeated Jr. Feather Weight Welcome Ncita 33-0-1 (14). It promised to be full day of fistic action starting at 12:00 noon and ending between 11:00 pm and midnight. The SOUTH AFRICA team has gone 0-3 while accumulating 33 points and is desperate to pull the upset and get their first win. USA EAST has their sights set on catching the 1st place USA WEST, the same team that gave them their only loss in week 1#. |

Week 4# Pre-fight hype for 3-7-92 matchups in Detroit
Fans spent the night in line waiting to purchase tickets to the March 7,1992 all day and night of boxing event at the "Joe Louis Arena". It only took several hours for 20,066 seats to be sold. ABC television will be showing the fights from 12:00 until 8:00 pm, then HBO takes over. (NBC and Showtime will be televising the fights in Philadelphia.)
The main event between the Canadian Donovan "Razor" Ruddock 25-5-1 (18) and ALL-TIME GREAT George Foreman 71-4-1 (66) has the public licking their chops in anticipation of a rock-em-sock-em donneybrook. Many of the other 4 round fights on the card were deserving of main event status, were this an ordinary boxing card, but this is no ordinary boxing card! Canada's Donny Lalonde 36-3-2 (30) vs. Orlin Norris 33-3-1 (15) had gamblers unsure of who to select, with Norris a slight 3-2 favorite. Much debate and discussion is ongoing regarding who'll win the Prince Charles Williams 34-4-2 (24) vs. Virgil Hill 33-1 (19) match. Many fans could be heard grumbling that it should be for 15 rounds, with the winner recognized as the Light Heavy Weight WORLD CHAMPION. Others though, pointed out that by the end of the year that may very well be what takes place in the Individual Tournament. They viewed this fight as an appetizer and as a way to determine which area of the world has the best professional fighters in 1992. After getting career matters straightened out with long time promoter Don King, left hook sensation Matthew Hilton 34-3-1 (23) is fighting better than ever before and expected to give "Terrible" Terry Norris 32-3 (16) an interesting challenge. Many Canadians had been among those who slept out overnight for tickets and the 2-1 underdog Hilton will undoubtedly have a homecrowd cheering him on. The battle between Texan Orlando Canizales and Ohio's Greg "Flea" Richardson is intriguing. Richardson is a very live 2-1 underdog. Many a Michigan boxing fan will be there to witness the home state bred Mayweather brothers in battle, along with several other Michigan fighters. Middle Weight WORLD CHAMPION James "Lights Out" Toney 28-0-2 (20) vs. Reggie Johnson has much anticipation. Both of them are expected to be chosen for the Individual Tournament, so this fight may be a prelude to a future 10-15 round matchup. The GREAT LAKES team is at a decided disadvantage from an experience persepective in the smallest weight classes. The combined record of the team's Staw through Jr. Bantam weight classes is 5-5 (2), while the USA WEST team record in those weight classes is 90-11-6 (38)! |

Week 4# GREAT LAKES 1-2 vs. USA WEST 3-0
Saturday, March 7, 1992; Joe Louis Arena; Detroit, Michigan
USA WEST REMAINS UNDEFEATED WITH DECISIVE VICTORY USA WEST went 12-4-1 (5) in the 17 matchups of 4 rounds vs. GREAT LAKES. They remain in 1st place with the overwhelming victory. HEAVY Razor Ruddock 25-5-1 (18) h-Canada George Foreman 71-4-1 (66) Texas Foreman TKO1 +3 USA WEST (Ruddock-cut4) From the opening bell until the referee stopped it with 17 seconds left in the 1st round, Foreman hit Ruddock at will. It was a dominating performance, which showcased Foreman's tremendous punching power. Ruddock was stunned and pinned on the ropes within the first 30 seconds. For the rest of the fight he attempted to survive and regain his senses. Ruddock never went down, but was out on his feet at the conclusion and couldn't stand without the support of the ropes. Once Foreman hurt him, he just never let him off the hook. Again, a dominating performance by George Foreman. CRUISER Donny LaLonde 36-3-2 (30) Canada Orlin Norris 33-3-1 (15) b-Texas Norris Wu4 +2 USA WEST LaLaonde Orlin Norris knocked LaLonde down in the first and put in a workmanlike performance. He never let LaLonde back in the fight, but never really hurt LaLonde again either. LIGHT HEAVY Prince Charles Williams 34-4-2 (24) Ohio Virgil Hll 33-1 (19) h-North Dakota Hill Wu4 +2 USA WEST A chess match with several solid exchanges that had the crowd on their feet. Neither fighter was ever hurt and the decision could have gone either way or fairly been scored a draw. Odds are high that they will meet again in the Individual Tournament to determine the 1992 Light Heavy Weight WORLD CHAMPION. SUPER MIDDLE Lindell Holmes 44-6-3 (36) Ohio Michael Nunn 39-2 (24) h-California Nunn Wu4 +2 USA WEST Nunn cruised to a wide uneventful decision. MIDDLE James Toney 28-0-4 (20) b-Michigan Reggie Johnson 31-4-1 (22) Texas Toney Wu4 +2 GREAT LAKES Jr. MIDDLE Matthew Hilton 34-3-1 (23) Canada Terry Norris 32-3 (16) Texas Du4 +0 Norris had little trouble evading the wide swings of Hilton and went on to win a wide decision 40-36 on all cards. WELTER Manning Galloway 50-12-1 (12) Ohio Lonnie Smith 29-5-2 (15) Colorado Smith Wu4 +2 USA WEST After losing the 1st round, Smith cruised to victory over the final 3 rounds. Galloway had trouble landing his punches. Jr. WELTER Roger Mayweather 35-4-3 (20) Michigan Greg Haugen 29-5 (14) Washington Haugen Wu4 +2 USA WEST (Haugen-cut2) Greg Haugen outhustled Mayweather to win a close, but unanimous upset decision. Haugen sustained a small cut over his left eye, but is expected to be healed well enough to fight again in Week 5# when USA WEST is home against EUROPE March 29th. LIGHT Jeff Mayweather 30-3-1 (4) Michigan Rafael Ruelas 30-2 (24) California Ruelas TKO4 +3 USA WEST Ruelas silenced the home crowd wih a steady beatdown of Mayweather. In the 4th Mayweather was unable to defend himself and the referee, to the relief of all, stopped it. Jr. LIGHT Tony Pep 26-6 (17) Canada Tony Lopez 41-3-1 (27) California Lopez Wu4 +2 USA WEST Tony "The Tiger" Lopez applied steady and effective pressure, while Pep attempted unsuccessfuly to pot shot fron the outside. FEATHER Renaldo Carter 24-3-2 (15) Michigan Louie Espinoza 43-5-2 (43) Arizona Espinoza TKO1 +3 USA WEST "The Sharpshooter" can punch! Louie Espinoza was all over Renaldo "Little Red" Carter. A series of dibilitating body shots ended it with Carter bent over in the corner and offering no resistance. Jr. FEATHER Jemal Hinton 21-1-2 (17) h-Michigan Jesse Benavides 35-3 (23) Texas Hinton Wu4 +2 GREAT LAKES Good fight! Another 6 rounds would better determine a winner. As it was, Hinton earned the victory over 4 rounds. BANTAM Greg Richardson 28-5-1 (4) Ohio Orlando Canizales 32-1-2 (25) Texas Canizales Wu4 +2 USA WEST Orlando Canizales was the clear winner, appling steady pressure and making himself hard to hit. Richardson was never in the fight, and showed signs that he is now well past his prime. Jr. BANTAM Arthur Johnson 1-2 (1) Minnesota Roberto Quiroga 20-1 (11) Texas Johnson Wu4 +2 GREAT LAKES A shocking upset. Despite only having 3 professional fights, and having lost 2 of them! Arthur "Flash" Johnson relied on his vast amatuer experience to outbox Roberto Quiroga. FLY Jerome McIntyre 0-1 Michigan Ysaias Zamudio 28-3-1 (8) California Zamudio KO4 +4 USA WEST (Zamudio-cut5) This was an outstanding fight! McIntyre was ahead on all 3 scorecards entering the final round. Zamudio had cut that was bleeding heavy and went for the knockout. To the dissappointment of McIntyre's Michigan fans, Zamudio got it when McIntyre walked into a harsh combination. McIntyre didn't stir while the count of 10 was tolled. Zamudio's cut was a bad one though, and the earlies he'll be eligible to return is May 16th, just before the League Championship takes place. LIGHT FLY Will Grigsby 3-2 (1) Minnesota Michael Carbajal 24-0-1 (13) Arizona Carbajal KO4 +4 USA WEST Michael Carbajal never gave Grigsby a chance to get his punches off. He applied a steady bombardment of punches from the 1st bell and walked right through the ones Grigsby did manage to land. Grigsby was counted out in the 4th, but it appeared to be more from exhaustion and an accumulation of punches than a single KO blow. STRAW Domenic Filane 1-0 (0) Canada Tony DeLuca 18-7-4 (6) California Filane Ws4 +2 GREAT LAKES (Filane-cut1) A big upset to start the days boxing off!. The Canadian was cut in the 1st round from a headbutt, but never seemed to let it bother him. He threw many accurate punches throughout and controlled the action with his stop and go aggressive style. DeLuca seemed to age overnight. The decision was close, but seemed fair. Filane's cut is not expected to prevent him from boxing in Week 5#, when GREAT LAKES is home againl, this time vs. USA EAST. GREAT LAKES +8 USA WEST +28 12-4-1 (5) WINS FIGHT OF THE NIGHT: Virgil Hill Wu4 Prince Charles Williams A razor close fight and decision. Both fighters seemed to just be warming up to a thrilling battle when the 4th round concluded. |

Week 4# USA EAST 2-1 vs. AFRICA 0-3
Saturday, March 7, 1992; The Spectrum; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
"AFRICA UPSETS USA EAST!" The AFRICA Team managed to obtain their first win in a significant upset. USA EAST +15 AFRICA +18 9-6-2 (0) WINS HEAVY Mike Tyson 43-1-1 (38) New York Pierre Coetzer 40-3 (27) South Africa Tyson Wu4 +2 USA EAST CRUISER Dwight Qawi 38-8-1 (22) New Jersey Anaclet Wamba 34-3-2 (14) b-Congo Wamba Wu4 +2 AFRICA LIGHT HEAVY Andrew Maynard 18-1-2 (15) b-Maryland Drake Thadzi 22-5-1 (20) b-Malawi Ds4 +0 SUPER MIDDLE Ray Leonard 38-3-1 (25) Maryland Mwehu Beya 17-7-5 (9) b-Congo Leonard Wu4 +2 USA EAST MIDDLE Dave Tiberi 24-3-4 (7) Delaware Sambu Kalambay 52-5-2 (32) b-Zaire Kalambay Wu4 +2 AFRICA Jr. MIDDLE Vinny Pazienza 33-6 (24) Rhode Island Gregory Clark 49-8 (28) South Africa Clark Wm4 +2 AFRICA “The Pazmanian Devil” was upset by a non-household named South African fighter. Pazienza lacked his usual fire and seemed lethargic throughout, despite a desperate attempt to land a bomb in the final round. Clark won a wide decision and made it look relatively easy in the process. WELTER James McGirt 58-2-1 (43) New York Nika Khumalo 35-7-2 (18) South Africa McGirt Wu4 +2 USA EAST Jr. WELTER Hector Camacho 42-1 (17) Florida Ike Quartey 15-2 (14) Ghana Quartey Wu4 +2 AFRICA LIGHT Pernell Whitaker 30-1 (14) Virginia Dingaan Thobela 29-0-1 (16) South Africa Whitaker KO2 +4 USA EAST Not looking in his usual perfectly trim fighting shape, “Sweet Pea” struggled a bit in the first round and the possibility of a mamouth upset was not without merit. However, Whitaker erased any thoughts of an underdog win at 2:16 of the 2nd round when he countered a Thobela miss with a straight right down the pipe. Thobela landed on his side and vainly struggled to beat the count, but never got a knee of the canvas. The crown of “P 4 P” king of boxing remains firmly on the head of “Sweet Pea” Whitaker! Jr. LIGHT Bernard Taylor 43-3-2 (21) b-North Carolina Brian Mitchell 45-2-3 (20) South Africa Mitchell Wm4 +2 AFRICA FEATHER Kevin Kelley 25-0 (19) New York November Ntshingila 20-1-1 (11) South Africa Dm4 +0 Jr. FEATHER Kennedy McKinney 20-0-2 (12) b-Missisippi Welcome Ncita 33-0-1 (14) South Africa Ncita Wm4 +2 AFRICA BANTAM Junior Jones 22-0-2 (14) New York Derrick Whiteboy 30-3-2 (16) South Africa Jones TKO4 +3 USA EAST (Whiteboy-cut3) Jr. BANTAM Luigi Camputaro 22-8 (8) h-Connecticut Nana Konadu 18-3-3 (14) b-Ghana Konadu Wu4 +2 AFRIA FLY Mark Johnson 7-1 (6) Washington DC Alfred Kotey 12-2 (9) b-Ghana Kotey Wm4 +2 AFRICA LIGHT FLY Danny Nunez 22-1-1 (18) h-New York Jacob Matlala 35-12-1 (18) South Africa Matala Wu4 +2 AFRICA STRAW Kermin Guardia 8-3 (4) h-Florida Thamsanqa Sogcwe 21-9-2 (8) South Africa Guardia Wm4 +2 USA EAST FIGHT OF THE NIGHT: Mike Tyson Wu4 Pierre Coetzer The South African, although a solid puncher, was unable to gain Tyson’s respect and subsequently was mauled in a very entertaining fight. Coetzer packed some wallup and won the 2nd round, but his ponderous blows found the bobbing and weaving Tyson a difficult target. Tyson won the 1st and 3rd rounds on all judges cards and was especially dominant in the 4th. Coetzer displayed an absolutely rock solid chin, as he took many a sledgehammer blow full force without crumbling. Coetzer resembled a “weeble that will wobble, but won’t fall down!” Both fighters expressed much deserved respect and mutual admiration for the other at the bouts conclusion. |

KO of Week 4#
KO of the Week:
1) Pernell Whitaker KO2 Dingaan Thobela Not looking in his usual perfectly trim fighting shape, “Sweet Pea” struggled a bit in the first round and the possibility of a mamouth upset was whispered among some. Whitaker erased any thoughts of underdog betters going home much rich at 2:16 of the 2nd round, when he countered a Thobela miss with a straight right down the pipe. Thobela struggled to beat the count, but never lifted a knee of the canvas. The crown of “P 4 P” king of boxing remains firmly on the head of “Sweet Pea” Whitaker! 2) George Foreman TKO1 Razor Ruddock From the opening bell until the referee stopped it with 17 seconds left in the 1st round, Foreman hit Ruddock at will in a dominating and impressive performance, which showcased his tremendous power. 3) Ysaias Zamudio KO4 Jerome McIntyre Behind on the scorecards and bleeding heavily from an eye cut, Zamudio landed a smashing left hook that left McIntyre on the canvas unable to beat the count. |

Upset of Week 4#
Upset of the Week:
1) Ike Quartey Wu4 Hector Camacho Quartey dropped the “Macho Man” twice in the opening round. Camacho held and moved to make it to the final bell, with his left eye swollen half shut. 2) Domenic Fliane Ws4 Tony DeLuca Bleeding from a headbutt in the 1st round, former Canadian amateur star Filane, had blood trickling down his face throughout the fight, as he outhustled the West coast veteran DeLuca to earn the decision. 3) Arthur Johnson Wu4 Roberto Quiroga The amatuer experience of Johnson apparently caught the IBF Jr. Bantam Champion by surprise, as Johnson had an answer for everything Quiroga threw, while managing to keep the experienced belt holder on the defense with his own offensive moves.

FIGHTER of the WEEK 4#
Fighter of the Week:
1) Miguel Lora Wm4 Luisita Espinosa Still plenty of talent and enthusiasm in the Miguel Lora boxing tank. Lora won a close, but fair decision over the Philippines talanted Espinosa. 2) Mike Tyson Wu4 Pierre Coetzer The South African, although a powerful puncher, was unable to gain Tyson’s respect and was subsequently mauled in a very entertaining fight. Coetzer packed some wallup, but just had to much difficulty landing on the bobbing and weaving Tyson. Coetzer displayed an absolutely rock solid chin, as he took many a sledgehammer blow full force. Coetzer resembled a “weeble that will wobble, but won’t fall down!” Both fighters expressed much respect and mutual admiration for the other at the bouts conclusion. 3) Orlin Norris Wu4 Donny Lalonde Impressive and dominating win for the Texas cruiser weight. |

Attempts by Coetzer to rise from the 2nd knockdown were in vain. The Champion of South America was visibly unaffected by the booing he received during introductions and may have added to his resolve to defeat Coetzer. A left hook sprawled Coetzer onto the canvas in the 1st round, and Rodriques dealt out steady methodical punsishment until landing the fatal knockout blow in the 4th round. The greatest Jr. Bantam Weight of all time, who decided to postpone his planned retirement to represent the ASIA team, still has enough left to give anybody at 115 pounds all or more than they can handle. That being said, he is a step or to slower than in his best days, which Puerto Rico's Jose Ruiz took advantage of at times. Ruiz outslicked Galaxy in the 1st round and the remaining 3 were competitive, but Galaxy did get the better of them. Fans would love to see Galaxy stay unretired and participate in the year end tournament to crown an undisputed Jr. Bantam World Champion. Over the course of 15 or 10 rounds this fight might have a very different result and certainly be an enjoyable fight to watch in the process. ASIA +14 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN +20 9-4-3 (1) WINS |

Odds EUROPE 2-2 vs. USA WEST 4-0
Tickets to Earls Court for this clash between EUROPE and USA WEST fighters was extremely hard to come by. All 18,000 seats sold out immediately upon availablity. Unconfirmed rumors are that ringside seats are being scalped for $50-75,000!!! A full of day of outstanding matchups kicks off at 12:00 noon and will continue late into the night. Pay per view sales in Europe and America are very high for the evening fights. The afternoon fights are being shown on CBS.

Still trying to fill the Great Lakes roster...
Canada's no.2 light-flyweight in 1992 was a guy called Barry Christie. Only result I have for him is a 1st round KO loss to Australia's Robbie Peden in the 1991 Canada Cup. Not sure if you'd consider him good enough.

Week 5# GREAT LAKES 1-3 vs. USA EAST 2-2
Sunday, March 29, 1992; Joe Louis Arena; Detroit, Michigan
HEAVY Tony Tucker 42-1 (34) Michigan Mike Tyson 44-1-1 (38) New York Tyson Wu4 +2 USA EAST (Tyson won the 1st round, getting the better of several good exchanges. There were no holds as Tyson bulled his way inside and Tucker attempted to, and did, recreate distance with his uppercut. Round 2 was more of the same with the edge belonging to Tyson. Tucker was able to effectively use his size to keep Tyson away from him. The crowd booed the lack of punches landing, but Tucker appeared pleased at the bell, as he was hardly hit with any 3rd round punches. There was no change in Tyson’s style in the 4th. Just like in the 1st 3 rounds Tyson used plenty of forward aggression in an attempt to work his way inside of the long reach and arms of Tucker. Tyson managed to hurt Tucker early in the 4th and mauled him the remainder of the round, while Tucker attempted to hold and missed with uppercuts that had been landing earlier in the fight.) CRUISER Donny LaLonde 36-4-2 (30) Canada Dwight Qawi 38-9-1 (22) New Jersey Qawi TKO1 +3 USA EAST (LaLonde-cut6) (This fight never got going as less than a minute in, LaLonde had a horribly grotesque inch long gash on his left eyelid and was unable to see.) LIGHT HEAVY Prince Charles Williams 34-5-2 (24) Ohio Andrew Maynard 18-1-3 (15) b-Maryland Williams KO3 +4 GREAT LAKES (Williams scored a brutal KO win. Maynard emerged from a 3rd round exchange with major swelling around his left eye. With his eye half shut, Maynard went toe to toe with Williams and the crowd erupted with cheers. A left hook by Williams connected first and the fight was over, with Maynard counted out in a neutral corner.) SUPER MIDDLE Lindell Holmes 44-7-3 (36) Ohio Ray Leonard 39-3-1 (25) Maryland Dm4 +0 (Sugar Ray was a 5-2 and sentimental favorite, but looked like a shell of his former self. Leonard struggled to get his punches off and seemed fortunate to leave the ring with a draw and not a loss. Holmes held and moved in the final round, believing he had it wrapped up 3 rounds to 0 at that point. The judges saw it differently though at: 38-38, 38-38, and 39-37 Holmes.) MIDDLE James Toney 29-0-4 (20) b-Michigan Dave Tiberi 24-4-4 (7) Delaware Toney Wu4 +2 GREAT LAKES (Tiberi-injured hand) Jr. MIDDLE Matthew Hilton 34-3-2 (23) Canada Vinny Pazienza 33-7 (24) Rhode Island Pazienza Wm4 +2 USA EAST (“The Pazmanian Devil” used his underrated boxing skills to outmaneuver Hilton. Paz avoided the big hooks of Hilton and attacked from angles, utilizing his speedy and sometimes underused footwork.) WELTER Manning Galloway 50-13-1 (12) Ohio James McGirt 59-2-1 (43) New York McGirt Wu4 +2 USA EAST Jr. WELTER Roger Mayweather 35-5-3 (20) Michigan Hector Camacho 42-2 (17) Florida Camacho Wm4 +2 USA EAST (Behind on the scorecards entering the final round, Camacho rallied to floor Mayweather and edge out a close decision win.) LIGHT Alvin Hayes 27-3 (23) Michigan Pernell Whitaker 31-1 (15) Virginia Whitaker Wu4 +2 USA EAST Jr. LIGHT Tony Pep 26-7 (17) Canada Bernard Taylor 43-4-2 (21) b-North Carolina Taylor Wu4 +2 USA EAST FEATHER Steve McCrory 35-5-1 (12) Michigan Kevin Kelley 25-0-1 (19) New York Kelley Wu4 +2 USA EAST Jr. FEATHER Jemal Hinton 22-1-2 (17) h-Michigan Kennedy McKinney 20-1-2 (12) b-Missisippi Hinton KO4 +4 GREAT LAKES (Behind on all 3 scorecards, 3-1 underdog, Jemal Hinton unloaded a bomb that knocked McKinney out! The home crowd fans of Hinton were in a frenzy with the sudden change in events. Another example of what’s great about boxing.) BANTAM Greg Richardson 28-6-1 (4) Ohio Junior Jones 23-0-2 (15) New York Jones Wu4 +2 USA EAST Jr. BANTAM Arthur Johnson 2-2 (1) Minnesota Luigi Camputaro 22-9 (8) h-Connecticut Johnson Wu4 +2 GREAT LAKES FLY Scotty Olson 20-0-1 (15) Canada Mark Johnson 7-2 (6) Washington DC Olson Wu4 +2 GREAT LAKES LIGHT FLY Barry Christie Debut Canada Danny Nunez 22-2-1 (18) h-New York Nunez BYE +4 USA EAST (Despite Christie's amatuer accomplishments the Michigan Stae Athletic Commission wouldn’t sanction the fight, believing that he lacked the experience to battle with the power punching "Bazooka" Nunez. Christie's amateur credentials were not seen as significant as the other fighters with less than 10 pro fight, who were allowed to fight: Mark Johnson, Domenic Filane, and Arthur Johnson.) STRAW Domenic Filane 2-0 (0) Canada Kermin Guardia 9-3 (4) h-Florida Guardia Wu4 +2 USA EAST (Filane-cut6) FIGHT OF THE NIGHT: James Toney Wu4 Dave Tiberi James Toney showed up in great shape and focused on avenging what some in the boxing world viewed as a blemish on his undefeated record, based on the results of the first meeting between these two. According to Toney’s camp he was looking forward more to this rematch than Tiberi. From bell one Toney was in the face of Tiberi with head on his chest ripping shots to the body. Tiberi had a few decent moments, but was hurt in the 3rd round and staggered into the ropes. In the 4th it was clear Tiberi had injured his hand as he vigorously shook it. GREAT LAKES +14 USA EAST +25 11-5-1 (1) WINS Last edited by Crimson; 04-27-2009 at 10:00 PM. |

Week 5# EUROPE 1-3 vs. USA WEST 4-0
Sunday, March 29, 1992; Earls Court; London, England
HEAVY Lennox Lewis 22-0 (16) England George Foreman 72-4-1 (67) Texas Foreman Ws4 +2 USA WEST CRUISER Magne Havnaa 18-3-3 (10) Norway Orlin Norris 34-3-1 (15) b-Texas Norris Wu4 +2 USA WEST LIGHT HEAVY Graciano Rocchigiani 34-1-1 (16) Germany Virgil Hll 34-1 (19) h-North Dakota Rocchigiani Wdq2 +2 EUROPE (Hill won the 1st round and seemed to have control of the fight, when he unloaded an obviously low blow that left the German clutching his groin with his back turned to Hill. The crowd erupted in boos, which only got louder when the referee immediately disqualified Hill.) SUPER MIDDLE Nigel Benn 34-2-1 (31) England Michael Nunn 40-2 (24) h-California Benn Wu4 +2 EUROPE MIDDLE Steve Collins 20-1-1 (8) Ireland Reggie Johnson 31-5-1 (22) Texas Collins Wu4 +2 EUROPE Jr. MIDDLE Gianfranco Rosi 55-4-1 (16) Italy Terry Norris 32-3-1 (16) Texas Norris KO3 +4 USA WEST (The fight was fairly even and uneventful, when at the 2:00 mark of the 3rd Norris suddenly unleashed a sizzling combination that left Rosi crumbled at his feet.) WELTER Patrizio Oliva 57-3 (20) Italy Lonnie Smith 30-5-2 (15) Colorado Smith Wm4 +2 USA WEST Jr. WELTER Tony McKenzie 25-7-1 (19) England Greg Haugen 30-5 (14) Washington McKenzie Wu4 +2 EUROPE (Haugen-cut1) LIGHT Carl Crook 25-3-2 (12) England Rafael Ruelas 31-2 (25) California Du4 +0 Jr. LIGHT Regilio Tuur 25-3-2 (17) h-Netherlands Tony Lopez 42-3-1 (27) California Lopez Wu4 +2 USA WEST (“The Tiger” Tony Lopez was impressive dishing out a beating over 4 rounds to Regilio Tuur. Lopez knocked him down in the 2nd round and steadily whipped in body shots the remainder of the fight.) FEATHER Paul Hodkinson 22-2-1 (19) England Louie Espinoza 44-5-2 (44) Arizona Du4 +0 Jr. FEATHER Thierry Jacob 38-5 (19) France Jesse Benavides 35-4 (23) Texas Jacob KO3 +4 EUROPE BANTAM Francis Ampofo 6-3 (4) England Orlando Canizales 33-1-2 (25) Texas Canizales KO1 +4 USA WEST Jr. BANTAM Vincenzo Belcastro 21-7-5 (4) Italy Roberto Quiroga 20-2 (11) Texas Du4 +0 FLY Salvatore Fanni 21-1 (12) Italy Paul Gonzales 16-4 (3) California Du4 +0 LIGHT FLY James Drummond 6-5-1 (5) Scotland Michael Carbajal 25-0-1 (14) Arizona Carbajal Wu4 +2 USA WEST (Lasting the distance to the cheers of the crowd while the undefeated Carbajal went for the knockout was an upset. Drummond even managed to go toe to toe with Carbajal in early punching exchanges.) STRAW Danny Porter 11-6-1 (6) England Tony DeLuca 18-8-4 (6) California Porter Wu4 +2 EUROPE (England’s Danny Porter upset the 5-1 odds against him winning much to the delight of his home country crowd with a unanimous decision victory. The 11-6-1 (6) Porter cemented the victory by knocking DeLuca down in the final round. DeLuca looks to be past his prime, as his punches were slow and along with his reaction time.) FIGHT OF THE NIGHT: Nigel Benn Wu4 Michael Nunn Benn lost the first 2 rounds on all cards. In the 3rd he turned up the intensity and dropped Nunn with a huge uppercut. Benn was effective in the final round and pulled out a unanimous decision 38-37 on all three scorecards. EUROPE +14 USA WEST +18 7-6-4 (2) WINS |
