KO of Week 5#
KO of the Week:
1) Adilson Rodriques KO4 Pierre Coetzer After standing up to the bombs of Tyson in his last fight, Coezter found himself unable to do the same vs. the gloved thunder of Brazil’s Adilson Rodrigues. Attempts by Coetzer to rise from, what would turn out to be, the bouts final knockdown were in vain. The Champion of South America was visibly unaffected by the booing he received during introductions and may have taken out any ill will he experienced on Coetzer. A left hook sprawled Coetzer onto the canvas in the 1st round, and Rodrigues dealt out steady methodical punsishment until landing the fatal knockout blow in the 4th round. 2) Muangchai Kittikasem KO4 Richard Clarke With about 14 seconds remaining in the fight Kittikasem landed an overhand right that knocked Richard Clarke out. Kittikasem was able to do what none of Clarke’s previous 4 opponents (Rodolfo Blanco, Louis Curtis, Ysaias Zamudio, and Salvatore Fanni) had been able to do in the Team Championship Fights…knock out Clarke. All had won decisions. 3) Mike McCallum KO1 John Mugabi “The Bodysnatcher” caught an aggressive Mugabi with a vicious uppercut on the inside. Mugabi fell in a heap and barely moved during the 10 count. |

Upset of Week 5#
Upset of the Week:
1) Tony McKenzie Wu4 Greg Haugen The 4-1 underdog McKenzie 25-7-1 (15) had his English fans on their feet as he knocked Haugen down and cut him over his eye in the 2nd round on route to clear cut upset decision win. 2) November Ntshingila Wu4 Antonio Esparragoza The relatively unheard of Ntshingila took it to former World Champion Esparragoza from the get go and his controlled aggression paid off. The clearly past his prime Esparragoza was slow to let his punches go and sometimes didn’t pull the trigger at all. 3) Dave Russell Wu4 Uriah Grant The admittedly past his prime Dave Russell went for the KO early and it paid off with a knockdown in the 2nd. Russell held and grabbed the rest of the way to secure the decision. |

Fighter of Week 5#
Fighter of the Week:
1) George Foreman Ws4 Lennox Lewis Foreman won the 1st round and the 2nd could have gone either way. The 3rd was Lewis’ best round as landed well and had Foreman’s right eye starting to swell. Apparently Lewis thought he had the fight won, because in the 4th he was covering up, holding, and moving. Foreman didn’t land anything big, but he was the one forcing the fight and that proved to be the difference on the scorecards, which led to a disputed and very inconclusive Foreman win. 2) Welcome Ncita Wu4 Pedro DeCima Ncita was impressive at avoiding the strong bull rushes of Argentina’s Pedro DeCima. When DeCima missed Ncita responded with an accurate counter. The undefeated fighter from South Africa was cheered loudly by the home crowd and expected to challenge for World Championship honors in the Individual Tournament later this year. 3) Melchor Cob Castro Wu4 Hiroki Ioka Mexican dynamo Melchor Cob Castro knocked Hiroki Ioka down in the 1st round and continued to apply the pressure the remainder of the fight. All cards read 40-35 for Castro. |

1992 Individual Tournament Championship details
The 1st ever "1992 Individual Tournament Championship" has been expanded from 8 fighters per division to 12. With unprecedented cooperation between boxings 4 major sanctioning bodies (WBA, WBC, IBF, and fairly new WBO), each is mandating that the Champion of thier organization participates in tbe tournament.
The Team Championship of 1992, being used as a way to (arguably)determine which area of the world has the best fighters of 1992, has created a significant increase in boxings popularity throughout the world. Similar to footballs NFL/AFL merger, boxings 4 sanctioning organizations realize that their is far more money to be made in boxing by working collaboratively towards clarifying who the true World Champion is in each weight division. How the tournament will work is: 1) The 4 belt holders (IBF, WBC, WBC, WBO) will be given 1st round byes in the tournament. 2) 8 non-beltholders of IBF, WBC, WBC, WBO world titles will be selected by team of boxing experts as deserving to participate in the tournament. 3) Those 8 fighters will face of in 10 round fights, with the 4 winners moving on to challenge one of the IBF, WBC, WBA, WBO belt holders in a 12 round matchup. 4) Winners of those matches will face off against one another in unification 12 rounders. 5) The final 2 fighters will then fight in a 15 round battle to determine that weight divisions World Champion. |

Many fighters that have been participating successfully in the "Boxing Team Championship" have voluntarily withdrawn to focus on the upcoming "1992 Individual Championship Tournament". Some of those big name fighters are: James Toney, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Brian Mitchell, the list goes on and on of fighters who are already guaranteed a spot in the 12 man tournament for each division. Those fighters do not want to risk an injury or cut so close to the BIG tournament to crown a unified and undisputed World Champion in each weight division.
Although those fighters withdrawing from the "Team Championship" is a significant loss, the postive is new fighters will now have an opportunity to represent their respective area team and prove their own worth to fight in the World Championship Tournament. |

I really like what you're doing here. The use of the suspension lists is a really great idea.

Thank you for the kind words. I appreciate that. And a HUGE belated thank you for the numerous fighters you have shared in the TBCB Forums. It has signifcantly added to my enjoyment of the game. I forget which specific fighters I have used, but there have been many and I'm sure some are beeing used in this universe or will be soon.
Also thanks for posting the "creating a fighter cheat sheet". It's provided me with some necessary moments of escape at work, when I've pulled it out (while on break ) to create fighters. I'm really looking forward to running the "1992 Individual Championship Tournament". It's something I've dreamt about seeing take place in real life since I was a kid (1980's). |

Week 6# ASIA 2-3 vs. USA WEST 5-0
Saturday, April 18, 1992
Sydney Entertainment Centre; Sydney, Australia HEAVY Tui Toa 10-3 (8) Tonga Tommy Morrison 30-1 (26) Oklahoma Morrison KO1 +4 USA WEST Morrison dropped Tui with the first punch he landed. A brutal combination layed Toa out for the full count at the :57 mark of round 1. CRUISER Dave Russell 19-8-6 (12) h-Australia Orlin Norris 35-3-1 (15) b-Texas Norris Wm4 +2 USA WEST Russell was surprisingly competitive, winning the 2nd round on all cards. Norris did the better overall work though an d earned the decision victory. LIGHT HEAVY Guy Waters 14-2-1 (4) Australia Frank Tate 30-2 (19) Texas Tate Wm4 +2 USA WEST Tate took 3 of the 4 rounds in a competitive fight. SUPER MIDDLE Rod Carr 11-4-3 (9) Australia Antoine Byrd 19-4-1 (8) California Carr Wu4 +2 ASIA Carr jumped on Byrd early and never let up. Byrd rallied briefly in the 3rd, but did little else during the fight. MIDDLE Shinji Takehara 12-0 (11) Japan Thomas Tate 23-1 (18) Texas Tate Wu4 +2 USA WEST Tate floored the inexperienced Takehara in the 4th to cement his clear cut decision victory. Jr. MIDDLE Craig Trotter 18-7 (11) Australia Pat Lawlor 18-1 (5) California Lawlor Wu4 +2 USA WEST After losing the first round decisively, Lawlor cut Trotter with a right hand and became much more aggressive. The fight belonged to the native of San Francisco from that point on. (Trotter-cut2) WELTER Yung-Kil Chung 32-10 (24) Korea Lonnie Smith 31-5-2 (15) Colorado Ds4 +0 Disputed decision that Smith seemed to do enough to win. Chung's best round was the 4th. Jr. WELTER Lester Ellis 34-7-1 (22) h-Australia Greg Haugen 30-6 (14) Washington Ellis Ws4 +2 ASIA LIGHT Shane Knox 16-0-2 (10) Australia Rafael Ruelas 31-2-1 (25) California Knox Wm4 +2 ASIA Knox pulled of a significant upset outworking Ruelas, with a partly swollen shut left eye. Jr. LIGHT Renato Cornett 19-2-2 (6) Australia Gabriel Ruelas 24-1 (17) California Ruelas Wm4 +2 USA WEST Ruelas rallied over the final 2 rounds to edge out a close fight. FEATHER Seiji Asakawa 19-3-1 (14) Japan Louie Espinoza 44-5-3 (44) Arizona Espinoza Ws4 +2 USA WEST Every Espinoza fight is a fan friendly war, where he gets hit but when his own powershots land the fight swings in his favor. Espinoza dropped Asakaw in the 2nd round, let him back into the fight in the 3rd, and cemented the victory with a good 4th round. Jr. FEATHER Kiyoshi Hatanaka 23-5-2 (15) Japan Paul Banke 21-7 (11) California Hatanaka Wu4 +2 ASIA A bloodbath that saw both fighters sustain eye cuts. Banke is no longer in his prime and it showed. BANTAM Luisito Espinosa 28-7-1 (14) Philippines Gerardo Martinez 28-1 (15) California Du4 +0 Espinosa won the 1st two rounds and Martinez edged out the 3rd and 4th rounds. Jr. BANTAM Thanomsak Sithbaobey 37-3 (22) Thailand Johnny Tapia 21-0-1 (12) New Mexico Dm4 +0 This was Tapia’s first fight since October 1990, due to a cocaine addiction and a 3 year suspension from boxing that was lifted earlier than anticipated. Tapia was losing going into the final round and managed to salvage a draw by hurting Sithbaobay and sweeping the final round on all judges cards. FLY Sot Chitalada 26-4-1 (16) Thailand Paul Gonzales 16-4-1 (3) California Chitalada Wm4 +2 ASIA Gonzales looked very old and seemed fortunate to not have the referee stop it in the 3rd. Making 112 pounds was reportedly pure torture for Gonzales. The 1984 Gold medalist spoke of 1 more fight and then retiring regardless of the result. LIGHT FLY Ala Villamor 21-0-1 (19) Philippines Villamor BYE +4 ASIA STRAW Hi-Yong Choi 14-2 (5) Korea Tony DeLuca 18-9-4 (6) California Choi Wm4 +2 ASIA Choi made it look easy, if not exciting. DeLuca absorbed punishment and offered little in return. ASIA +14 USA WEST +16 7-7-3 (1) WINS FIGHT of the NIGHT: Frank Tate Wm4 Guy Waters Last edited by Crimson; 05-09-2009 at 11:00 PM. |

Week 6# EUROPE 2-3 vs. USA EAST 3-2
Saturday, April 18, 1992; Earls Court; London, England
HEAVY Francesco Damiani 28-1 (23) Italy Riddick Bowe 27-0 (23) New York Bowe Wu4 +2 USA EAST Bowe won it 40-36 on all 3 scorecards. After losing the first 2 rounds Damiani went into a defensive shell, with the primary purpose of going all 4 rounds. CRUISER Derek Angol 25-0 (21) England Dwight Qawi 39-9-1 (23) New Jersey Qawi KO3 +4 USA EAST The 39 year old Dwight Qawi turned back the clock yet again with a mesmerizing 3rd round knockout of the undefeated Englishman Derek Angol. Qawi never gave Angol’s English fans anything to cheer about as he was all over Angol once the opening bell rang. Angol fought back as best he could, but was no match for “The Camden Buzzsaw”! LIGHT HEAVY Christophe Tiozzo 30-1 (21) France Doug DeWitt 32-7-4 (19) New York Tiozzo Wu4 +2 EUROPE Tiozzo won a hard fought and deserved decision over the still rugged and tough DeWitt. SUPER MIDDLE Frank Nicotra 28-0 (16) France Darrin Van Horn 47-3 (27) Kentucky Nicotra Wu4 +2 EUROPE Van Horn tore after Nicotra in the 1st round and dropped the Frenchman twice. In the 2nd Van Horn was looking to finish off what he’d started in the 1st round with an impressive KO and was having his way when….WHAM “The Schoolboy” found himself on the canvas from a right hand bomb! In the 3rd Van Horn took a shellacking and the referee appeared to be very close to stopping it. Believing his was behind on the scorecards, Van Horn let it all hang out in the 4th and final round. Bleeding now from the mouth Van Horn missed wildly with his shots and the undefeated Nicotra pasted him on his way to securing the unanimous decision win and a hoped for spot in the upcoming “Championship Tournament”. MIDDLE Steve Collins 21-1-1 (8) Ireland Lamar Parks 20-0 (16) South Carolina Parks Ws4 +2 USA EAST The Main Even of the evening between USA EAST and EUROPE had the crowd of 18,00+ on their feet cheering and singing, reminiscent of Barry McGuigan’s heyday. “Irish” Steve Collins was a 2-1 favorite, but the undefeated Parks had plenty of bets wagered in his favor also. Collins fought a very defensive fight minimizing the exchanges. The television announcers had Park winning, but with the crowd roaring after every punch Collins threw regardless of it landed or not a decision in his favor seemed likely. When it was announced as split it sounded like the crowd would riot right then and there. And that is exactly what happened when ring announcer Craig Stephens delivered as unpopular a verdict as you may ever see at “Earls Court” and Lamar Parks was announced as the split decision winner! The ensuing riot lasted for over 2 hours. It may be awhile before boxing takes place once again at “Earls Court”. Punch stat favored Collins 87 to 77, but 2 of the judges obviously preferred the power of Parks shots, despite Collins never showing any sign of being visibly hurt by them. Jr. MIDDLE Gilbert Dele 33-1-1 (22) France Aaron Davis 33-1 (20) New York Davis Wu4 +2 USA EAST (Dele-cut4) Davis put in a consistent workmanlike performance for all 4 rounds. Dele was never in the fight and his corner struggled to close a cut over his right eye after the 2nd round. WELTER Patrizio Oliva 57-4 (20) Italy Kevin Pompey 25-4-1 (11) New York Pompey KO2 +4 USA EAST Pompey jumped on Oliva in the 1st looking to catch the Italian by surprise and score a KO. Oliva responded in kind and the crowd was roaring in approval by the rounds end. Pompey continued to show no respect for Oliva’s power in the 2nd and dropped him briefly for a 2 count with a hook. Pompey showed great killer instinct and a rocket right hand dropped Oliva again. He attempted to rise, but fell in the process, taking the 10 count! A huge upset win for the 3-1 underdog Pompey. Jr. WELTER Tony McKenzie 26-7-1 (19) England Charles Murray 24-1 (16) New York Murray KO2 +4 USA EAST To the disappointment of his home country English fans, McKenzie was dropped hard in the 1st round by a left hook. 19 seconds into the 2nd round “The Natural” again dropped McKenzie, this time for the count of 5. Just before the bell ending the round Murray knocked McKenzie out with a straight right. LIGHT Carl Crook 25-3-3 (12) England Sharmba Mitchell 27-0 (14) Washington DC Mitchell Wu4 +2 USA EAST A good fight, but England’s Carl Crook was no match for the flash and speed of Sharmba Mitchell. The classy and speedy 21 year old easily won the decision. Crook showed gameness and durability in going all 4 rounds. Jr. LIGHT Regilio Tuur 25-4-2 (17) h-Netherlands Bernard Taylor 44-4-2 (21) b-North Carolina Tuur Wu4 +2 EUROPE Tuur came out very aggressively and it paid off with a 2nd round knockdown. In the 3rd Tuur dished out a beating and ½ closed Taylor’s right eye. Tuur didn’t let up in the 4th and only Taylor’s heart and experience allowed him to survive another knockdown and make it to the final bell. FEATHER Maurizio Stecca 44-1 (21) Italy Kevin Kelley 26-0-1 (19) New York Kelly Wm4 +2 USA EAST Kelly outboxed the more experienced Stecca on his way to the majority decision win, that seemed more like it should have been unanimous. Stecca hardly landed any punches on Kelly. Jr. FEATHER Valerio Nati 46-5-4 (28) Italy Daryl Pinckney 10-12-2 (8) Florida Nati Wu4 +2 EUROPE Nati came out of a short retirement and won an unimpressive decision, in a fight that had the crowd booing the frequent holding and lack of clean punching. BANTAM Michele Poddighe 10-3-2 (5) Italy Junior Jones 24-0-2 (15) New York Jones KO3 +4 USA EAST Jones showed no respect for Michele Poddighe, and in the 3rd a beautiful combination knocked the much less experienced Poddighe out cold. Jr. BANTAM Vincenzo Belcastro 21-7-6 (4) Italy Luigi Camputaro 22-10 (8) h-Connecticut Camputaro Wu4 +2 USA EAST The Italian born Camputaro, who now lives and trains in Hartford, CT was 0-5 in the Team fights and earning a reputation as a trial horse. He took 3 of the 4 rounds vs. his more established European opponent, Vincenzo Belcastro, for an unexpected win. “Hopefully this win will help to get Camputaro into the Championship tournament. His 5 losses were all to World Class fighters and I think the results might be different over 10 rounds”, declared Camputaro’s trainer. FLY Salvatore Fanni 21-1-1 (12) Italy Mark Johnson 7-3 (6) Washington DC Johnson Wu4 +2 USA EAST Johnson might be the best 8-3 boxer fighting professionally today. Fanni is a proven world class fighter with only 1 defeat and 1 draw as a blemishing his 23 fight pro career entering the matchup, and he proved to be no match for quick and powerful Johnson. This one wasn’t close. Nothing Fanni tried was effective. LIGHT FLY James Drummond 6-6-1 (5) Scotland Danny Nunez 22-2-1 (18) h-New York Nunez Wm4 +2 USA EAST Nunez seemed to be on auto pilot at times during the fight and almost allowed the 7-1 underdog, Dummond of Scotland to pull off an upset. STRAW Danny Porter 12-6-1 (6) England Kermin Guardia 10-3 (4) h-Florida Guardia Wu4 +2 USA EAST Porter won the 1st round to the joy of his English fans, but Guardia swept rounds 2 through 4 on all judges cards to secure the decision victory. FIGHT OF THE NIGHT: Frank Nicotra Wu4 Darrin Van Horn EUROPE +8 USA EAST +34 13-4-0 (3) WINS |

Week 6# MEXICO/CARRIBEAN 3-2 vs. AFRICA 2-3
Sunday, April 19, 1992
Palacio de los Deportes; Mexico City, Mexico HEAVY Trevor Berbick 40-8-1 (28) Jamaica Corrie Sanders 14-0 (10) South Africa Dm4 +0 (Sanders-cut5) A really bad decision! Berbick’s defense and experience prevented Sanders from landing any blows of consequence. After assumingly winning the first 3 rounds, and with Sanders bleeding heavily from a cut over the right eye, Berbick coasted in the final round. The crowd booed loudly for several minutes after the draw decision was announced. CRUISER Uriah Grant 24-10-1 (21) b-Jamaica Tee Jay 14-4-1 (8) Ghana Jay Wu4 +2 AFRICA Grant jumped on the inactive Tee Jay early, looking for an early stoppage, and walked right into a bomb. Grant rose from the knockdown with a new found respect for Jay’s power and never threatened for the remainder of the fight. LIGHT HEAVY Leslie Stewart 29-9 (18) Trinidad/Tobago Drake Thadzi 23-5-2 (20) b-Malawi Thadzi TKO4 +3 AFRICA Thadzi cut and dropped Stewart in the 1st, before finishing him off with another knockdown in the 4th and the eventual referee stoppage. SUPER MIDDLE Jesus Gallardo 25-3-1 (23) Mexico Mwehu Beya 17-9-5 (9) b-Congo Gallardo Wu4 +2 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN Jesus Gallardo looked good winning a 40-36 decision on all judges scorecards. Unfortunately for the Mexican veteran he injured his right hand in the final round. The injury will remove any chances he had of qualifying for the “Super Middle Weight World Championship” tournament coming up in less than 2 months. MIDDLE Mike McCallum 46-2-1 (36) b-Jamaica Sambu Kalambay 54-5-2 (32) b-Zaire Kalambay Wu4 +2 AFRICA A good matchup on paper between two of the sports premier boxers in regards to skills didn’t live up to expectations. Both fought even more defensively than usual, possibly not wanting to be cut so close to the “Middle Weight World Championship” tournament. Kalambay earned the win, 3 rounds to 1. Jr. MIDDLE Lloyd Honeyghan 38-5-2 (24) b-Jamaica Gregory Clark 50-9 (28) South Africa Honeyghan KO4 +4 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN Honeyghan was bulldog like in his attack and for the first 2 rounds very effective. It appeared that a Honeyghan win by stoppage was likely, when Clark whipped out a left hook and the native of Jamaica found himself on the canvas until the count reached 8! Honeyghan was undeterred though, and went back on the attack for the final round. A wild overhand right knocked South Africa’s Clark out cold for several minutes. WELTER Simon Brown 38-3 (26) b-Jamaica Nika Khumalo 35-9-2 (18) South Africa Brown Wu4 +2 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN Jamaica’s Simon Brown was all business and floored Nika Khumalo less than a minute into the 1st round. Brown seemed to take his foot off the pedal the rest of the way and Khumalo went the 4 round distance. Jr. WELTER Edwin Rosario 44-4 (36) Puerto Rico Ike Quartey 16-3 (14) Ghana Quartey Wu4 +2 AFRICA Ike Quartey struggled to make weight and was pushed around the ring in the first 2 rounds by the smaller and older, yet much faster Edwin Rosario. In the 3rd Rosario got caught and was on the canvas for the count of 6. In what appeared would be the deciding round, should the fight go to the cards, Rosario resumed his aggression as if he had never been knocked down and soon found himself back on the canvas x2 and on the losing end of the unanimous decision. LIGHT Jorge Paez 38-6-6 (26) Mexico Aladin Stevens 43-6-7 (19) South Africa Paez Wu4 +2 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN Paez bulled Stevens around the ring and controlled the fight, emphasizing his superiority with a 4th round knockdown. Jr. LIGHT Cocas Ramirez 60-7-3 (48) Mexico Kamel Bou-Ali 42-3-2 (30) Tunisia Bou-Ali KO2 +4 AFRICA The 34 year old, long time fight veteran, Kamel Bou-Ali looked good in knocking out Jorge “Cocas” Ramirez. FEATHER Gregorio Vargas 24-3-1 (15) Mexico November Ntshingila 21-1-2 (11) South Africa Vargas Wu4 +2 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN Vargas made it look easy and Ntshingilia was never really in the fight. Jr. FEATHER Raul Perez 49-3-2 (32) Mexico Vuyani Bungu 19-2 (13) South Africa Perez Wm4 +2 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN Home country favorite, Raul "Jibaro" Perez, received the loudest cheers of the day and night, while edging out the unheralded Vuyani Bungu of South Africa in the best fight on the card. The fight was close with some visous exchanges, giving the fans plenty to cheer about and their money’s worth! BANTAM Cecilio Espino 23-2 (20) Mexico Steve Mweme 13-5-1 (5) Kenya Espino Wu4 +2 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN Mexican, Cecilio Espino, urged on by his countrymen, floored Kenya’s Steve Mwema twice in the 4th round, while winning a unanimous decision. Jr. BANTAM Jose Ruiz 23-4 (7) Puerto Rico Nana Konadu 18-3-4 (14) b-Ghana Ruiz Wm4 +2 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN Jose Ruiz was knocked down in the 1st round, but rose up to knock Konadu down in the 3rd and secure the decision win. FLY Isidro Perez 56-8-3 (40) Mexico Alfred Kotey 14-2 (9) b-Ghana Perez Wu4 +2 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN (Kotey-cut Perez won a wide decision, cutting the eye of Kotey and knocking him down one time. LIGHT FLY Melchor Cob Castro 36-4-4 (18) Mexico Jacob Matlala 37-12-1 (18) South Africa Cob Casto Ws4 +2 MEXICO/CARRIBEAN Both fighters fought defensively and Mexico’s Melchor Cob Castro edged Jacob Matlala in an inconclusive fight. STRAW Fernando Martinez 34-6-2 (20) Mexico Thamsanqa Sogcwe 21-11-2 (8) South Africa Sogcwe Wu4 +2 AFRICA (Sogcwe-cut1; Martinez-cut1) Both fighters had a small cut over the right eye. In the 3rd Martinez was knocked down by an uppercut and that was the difference in the fight being scored for Thamsanqa Sogcwe. MEXICO/CARRIBEAN +22 10-6-1 (1) WINS AFRICA +14 FIGHT of the NIGHT: Raul Perez Wm4 Vuyani Bungu |

Week 6# CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA vs. GREAT LAKES
Sunday, April 19, 1992
Gimnasio Jose Beracara; Caracas, Venezuela CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA 2-3 GREAT LAKES 1-4 HEAVY Adilson Rodriques 42-6-1 (33) Brazil Tony Tucker 42-2 (34) Michigan Rodrigues KO3 +4 C/S AMERICA Wow, upset special! Rodrigues was stuggling against Tony “TNT” Tucker and appeared to be on his way to losing a decision when he exploded with a short combination on the inside and Tucker crumbled at his feet, unable to beat the count! CRUISER Marcelo Figueroa 23-6-2 (19) Argentina Richard Mason 19-2-1 (14) Ohio Figueroa Wu4 +2 C/S AMERICA Richard “Hardface” Mason was a bit wild in his attack and paid for it in the 3rd round, courtesy of a swift uppercut that planted him on the canvas. Mason had a good 4th round, but it wasn’t enough to overcome losing the first 3 rounds. LIGHT HEAVY Dario Matteoni 28-5-2 (21) Argentina Booker T. Word 21-2-1 (16) Michigan Word Wu4 +2 GREAT LAKES Booker T. Word went all out for the knockout and his relentless aggression met with success. Matteoni was floored in the 2nd round and the crowd was cheering for the American by the 4th round. SUPER MIDDLE Juan Carlos Giminez 38-5-3 (25) Paraguay Tim Littles 18-0 (13) Michigan Littles Wm4 +2 GREAT LAKES Former United States amateur standout, Tim Littles, struggled on the inside against his larger opponent, Juan Carlos Giminez of Paraguay. In round 3 Littles took the fight to the outside where his superior boxing skills were on display. Littles dominated over the final 2 rounds and remains undefeated. MIDDLE Carlos Cruzat 17-6 (13) Chile Joe Gatti 16-1 (13) Canada Gatti Wu4 +2 GREAT LAKES (Gatti-cut4) Gatti came out firing in the 1st, looking to test the chin of Chile’s Carlos Cruzat. In the 2nd Gatti sustained a bad cut over his left eye, but continued with his aggressive style and had Cruzat badly hurt just before the bell sounded. A Gatti uppercut floored Cruzat in the 3rd. Jr. MIDDLE Julio Cesar Vasquez 36-2 (25) Argentina Brett Lally 30-6 (19) Michigan Vasquez Wu4 +2 C/S AMERICA Brett Lally’s toughness wasn’t enough to overcome the skill and strength of Julio Cesar Vasquez. Lally visited the canvas 3 times and endured a steady beating when he wasn’t on the canvas. WELTER Engels Pedroza 35-3 (34) Venezuela Roger Turner 22-0 (12) Michigan Dm4 +0 Pedroza started strongly in the 1st, but by the midway mark of the 2nd Turner’s superior boxing skills were taking over. However, with a ½ shut swollen right eye and his countrymen cheering him on, Pedroza rallied in the 4th and managed to hurt Turner. A very exciting fight. Jr. WELTER Juan Martin Coggi 57-3-2 (31) Argentina Roger Mayweather 35-6-3 (20) Michigan Coggi Wu4 +2 C/S AMERICA Coggi showed little regard for Mayweather’s power and bullied him into the ropes throughout the fight, where he proceeded to rake his body with hooks. Mayweather landed some sharp rights in the 2nd and Coggi vs. Mayweather had the crowd on the edge of their seats! Coggi wasn’t to be denied victory and continued with his relentless aggression, flooring Mayweather in the 4th and clarifying to all who had one the fight. LIGHT Ricardo Silva 15-7-2 (5) Argentina Alvin Hayes 27-4 (23) Michigan Silva Wm4 +2 C/S AMERICA Ricardo Silva earned a hard fought decision victory over the comebacking Alvin “Too Sweet” Hayes. Jr. LIGHT Pedro Gutierrez 60-21-11 (23) Argentina Tony Pep 26-8 (17) Canada Pep Ws4 +2 GREAT LAKES Pedro Gutierrez scored a flash knockdown in the 1st round, but the fight all went Pep’s way from that point forward. FEATHER Antonio Esparragoza 30-6-5 (28) Venezuela Steve McCrory 35-6-1 (12) Michigan Esparragoza TKO1 +3 C/S AMERICA Antonio Esparragoza overwhelmed and destroyed Kronk’s Steve McCrory. The Venezuelan appeared to be thriving on the cheers of his home country crowd and, for this night at least, turned back the page to when he reigned as the universally recognized World Feather Weight Champion. Jr. FEATHER Pedro Decima 30-5 (19) Argentina Jemal Hinton 23-1-2 (18) h-Michigan DeCima Wm4 +2 C/S AMERICA DeCima was a stern test for the latest rising star out of Emanuel Steward’s Kronk Gym. The Argentine’s aggression was effective and had Hinton fighting defensively off of his back foot. In the 4th, Hinton went against the advice of his Hall of Fame trainer, Emanuel Steward, and went toe to toe with DeCima. The Argentine continued his dominance in the 4th. The fight wasn't without merit for Hinton, as the good chin and winning desire he put on display in the losing effort, earned him a guaranteed spot in the "Jr. Feather Weight World Championship" tournament. Decima was also extended an invitaion to participate, which he accepted. These two might meet again! BANTAM Miguel Lora 37-2 (17) Columbia Greg Richardson 28-7-1 (4) Ohio Lora Wu4 +2 C/S AMERICA “The Flea” Greg Richardson, no longer has the ability to avoid punches that he once had. Miguel “Happy” Lora stayed on the outside and landed potshots. Richardson was unable to penetrate the Lora defense with anything of consequence. Jr. BANTAM Carlos Mercado 24-1-3 (18) Columbia Arthur Johnson 3-2 (1) Minnesota Dm4 +0 A very boring and uneventful fight. FLY Hugo Soto 26-1-1 (16) Argentina None Soto BYE +4 C/S AMERICA GREAT LAKES unable to locate an eligible fighter to compete. LIGHT FLY Robinson Cuesta 22-2-1 (14) Panama Barry Christie Debut Canada Cuesta Wu4 +2 C/S AMERICA A fairly easy win for Cuesta. Christie was barely able to survive and last the distance. STRAW Carlos A. Rodriguez 16-6-2 (13) Venezuela None Rodriguez BYE +4 C/S AMERICA GREAT LAKES unable to locate an eligible fighter to compete. CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA +29 11-4-2 (2) WINS GREAT LAKES +6 FIGHT OF THE NIGHT: Pedro Decima Wm4 Jemal Hinton

Upsets of Week 6#
1) Adilson Rodrigues KO3 Tony Tucker
(For the 2nd time Brazil's Rogrigues earns top honors for this award! He is building a solid case for himself to be added to the "Heavy Weight World Championship" tournament.) 2) Kevin Pompey KO2 Patrizio Oliva (Few people outside of Troy, New York gave the "Troy Tiger" any chance of beating the smooth boxing and proven world class Oliva in unfriendly territory, let alone knocking him out.) 3) Lamar Parks Ws4 Steve Collins (That Lamar Parks beat Steve Collins in and of itself was not an upset, as he was only a 2-1 underdog, and a live one at that. It was the manner of the win that was shocking. In England with 18,000+ cheering on Collins, a fairly uneventful fight as far as punch exchanges are concerned, neither fighter was ever hurt or even stunned and punchstat numbers had Collins ahead by 10+ punches. The upset was that Collins did not get the decision in a close fight that he appeared to win.) |

KOs of Week 6#
The top 3 Knockouts of Week 6# were:
1) Tommy Morrison KO1 Tui Toa (One punch KO power like this is still a fantastic sight when delivered by a heavyweight, regardless of the opponent it lands against.) 2) Dwight Qawi KO3 Derek Angol (The "Camden Buzzsaw", and future Canastota bound Hall of Famer, scored a spectacular KO.) 3) Antonio Esparragoza TKO1 Steve McCrory (The sheer aggressive ferocity of Esparragoza's attack was ovewhelmingly impressive, like a tidal wave swamping a rowboat. One has to wonder if he can put for this type of effort again or if it was a one time drink from the fountain of his youth?) |

Fighter of Week 6#
The fighters of the week for, Week 6# were:
1) Mark Johnson FLY Washington D.C. (The now 8-3 (6) Mark Johnson earns top honors for once again proving those who doubt his ability to beat world class opponents, with so little pro experience under his belt, wrong. His win over the world rated Italian, Salvatore Fanni 21-1-1 (12) went a long way towards providing evidence that Johnson is deserving of fighting in the "Fly Weight World Championship" tournament despite only having 8 wins to his credit.) 2) Shane Knox LIGHT Australia (The 17-0-2 (10) Australian rallied over the final 2 rounds with a rapidly swelling shut eye to achieve a minor upset over the highly regarded Rafael Ruelas.) 3) Riddick Bowe HEAVY Brooklyn, NY ("Big Daddy" was impressive in winning a unanimous decision over fellow star amatuer Olympian Francesco Damiani. Bowe managed to turn what looked like a fairly competitive matchup on paper into a onesided romp in his favor. The now 28-0 (23) Bowe, the big kid with the huge smile and reputation as an underachiever, is a force to be reckoned with in the "Heavy Weight Championship" tournament. With Eddie Futch in his corner, the reckoning can be expected to increase as time goes on.) |
