This was posted at "Boxing Forum "http://www.boxingforum.com/boxing-forum-general-discussion/2591-john-mugabi-finds-peace-teaching-kids-australia.html
John Mugabi finds peace teaching kids in Australia Sports Nut "The gentle boxing instructor at Brisbane's Hills District PCYC is no longer recognisable as the man who co-starred in one of the most savage middleweight title fights of all time. In another life, the quiet man with the thick glasses was John Mugabi, ``The Beast''. During the 1980s, Mugabi was one of the biggest names in world boxing. His 1987 epic challenge against undisputed world middleweight champion Marvin Hagler at Caesar's Palace remains a ring classic." From Wikipedia: "Mugabi then retired for 5 years, and moved to Australia, where he still resides and trains fighters. In 1996, he came back and had a seven fight comeback, but, apart from beating Jamie Wallace by a decision in 12 at the Gold Coast for the Australian Middleweight title, his comeback was undistinguished." |

John "The Beast" Mugabi
John Mugabi was one of my favorite fighters to watch in the 1980's. His destruction of Frank "The Animal" Fletcher, valiant effort against Marvelous Marvin Hagler, knockout of William "Vampire'" Johnson (who entered the ring in a coffin!) stand out as positives. He had that impressive knockout streak going 20+ and was on the cover of Ring Magazine.
Then I remember being really disappointed when he was stopped by Duane Thomas after an eye injury. |
