United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 8

Round 1 - Part 8:

Roger Bernard vs Danny Rios - Bernard dominated in every category in this one, though Rios proved he was game throughout. Bernard's ring generalship and accurate jab and crosses were the tale at the end as he took the 9-5, 11-3 and 11-3 decision.

Art Aragon vs Jimmy Robertson - Aragon floated effortlessly around the ring to keep Robertson off balance while peppering him from all angles in the first 10 rounds. Robertson did better in the final 5 rounds, but Aragon still piled up the rounds to earn the easy 13-2, 14-1 and 13-1 decision.

Luther White vs Martin E. Snee - White was the superior athelete, sticking and moving, scoring in bunches while showing superior defense in his 11-2, 12-1 and 9-3 decision.

Sonny Boy West vs Eddie Zivic - West came in a big favorite, but Zivic was more active, more accurate and more mobile in this one as he pulled out the close 8-5, 7-6 and 8-5 upset.

Sid Terris vs Kelcie Banks - Terris was in control throughout, though he did take a few rounds off, allowing Banks to steal some rounds. It wasn't enough for Banks however as Terris took the 10-4, 9-4 and 10-5 decision.

Allie Stolz vs Crocky Boyle - Stolz seemed to be in control throughout this fight, despite horrid officiating when the referee took a point away from him in the 9th for a non existant late punch at the end of the round. Things got stranger when the fight was sent to the judges however, as they scored it 8-6 Boyle, 7-6 Stolz and 10-3 for the winner by split decision Stolz. I had it 9-4 Stolz myself.

Paul Spadafora vs Jimmy Britt - Britt did suprisingly well early, but faded in this tactical bout that had plenty of action from both men. Spadafora closed strong to take the 11-3, 8-6 and 10-3 decision.

Al Singer vs John Brown - Singer was simply dominating despite a cut over his right eye due to an intentional head butt from Brown. He nearly ended the fight on several occasions, with Brown's left eye ballooning at an alarming rate. Singer scored 2 knockdowns in the 12th, but somehow Brown held on then reopened the cut over Singer's eye in the 13th for the improbable, (and to most observers) unfair upset TKO by Brown.

Seeing how far a guy like Spadafora can go is one of the great things about this tournament. Awesome job once again.

Edit: searched for Anthony Boyle but came up empty. Did he make the tournament??? Pretty sure he'd be lightweight for it.

Glad you're having fun with this!

As for Anthony Boyle, he wasn't in the database when I started this. I made the decision not to upgrade the DB so as not to change anything due to the length of time I expected this to run. (I'm a bit behind where I thought I'd be..lol)

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 9

Round 1 - Part 9:

Solly Seeman vs Sam Collyer - Seeman built up a lead then held on as Collyer mounted a comeback punctuated by Seeman losing a point in the 15th for his third low blow of the fight. I had it 8-6 Seeman, but with so many close rounds it was really a toss up as it went to the score cards. The judges scored it 9-5, 8-7 and 9-5 for Seeman as one judge didn't take a point off his score card for the unanimous decision.

Milburn Saylor vs Billy Dacey - An exciting brawl in this one as both men took turns dominating, with Saylor scoring the lone knockdown in the 13th round to take a slight lead. They split the final 2 action packed rounds and it went to the score cards with the judges scoring it 9-6, 9-5 and 8-7 for Saylor.

Sean O'Grady vs Joseph Figueroa - Figueroa tried to fight smart, dancing and sticking his jab in the face of O'Grady at every turn, but by the 5th he was holding his arms low as O'Grady's withering body attack sapped his energy. O'Grady built up the lead then landed a looping overhand right that floored Figueroa for an 8 count then trapped him against the ropes and pummeled him until the referee halted it later in the round for the TKO.

Ruben Navarro vs Toby Irwin - Navarro was scintillating, moving in, tagging Irwin then sliding away most of the fight. Irwin had some great moments in the middle of the fight, but was unable to sustain the offensive pace that Navarro was providing throughout the bout. The judges scored it 12-2, 10-4 and 11-3 for Navarro.

Mel Middleton vs Tim Kearns - Middleton was favored, and scored a knockdown in the 3rd round only to have Kearns roar back and build up a huge lead. In the 14th round Kearns scored a knockdown of his own then piled it on before the referee halted the bout to save Middleton from serious harm, handing Kearns the upset TKO in this high scoring battle between 2 sluggers.

George McFadden vs Ritchie Mack - McFadden started fast in the 1st round, then Mack roared back taking the 2nd and 3rd rounds of what had been expected to be a tactical bout between a pair of boxers. McFadden stepped in just as Mack ducked under a left hook and landed a picture perfect uppercut in the 4th that had Mack down for the count!

Sammy Mandell vs Bob Matthews - Matthews really took it to the favored Mandell in this one early, scoring a 7th round knockdown while building up a solid lead. Mandell's strategy seemed to be to let Matthews punch himself out, and it worked as he faded in the final 5 rounds, with Mandell scoring a knockdown of his own in the 14th then piled on the points in the 15th round, nearly having Matthews out on his feet when the bell rang. The scoring was expected to be close, (I had it 8-7 Matthews) The judges had it 8-7, 9-6 and 8-7 for the winner by upset decision Matthews.

Ray Mancini vs George Monroe - Monroe came in with a plan, and stuck to it, but Mancini's body work overcame the slick boxing of Monroe as he brought his hands down then scored a wicked uppercut in the 4th for the KO.

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 10

Round 1 - Part 10:

Rocky Kansas vs Art Ramponi - A good tough fight that saw Kansas on his back in the 1st and 4th rounds. The 8th was a thing of beauty as both men rocked the other throughout, and it was dead even when Kansas scored a knockdown early in the 9th then pummeled Ramponi unmercifully throughout the round before the referee halted the bout as Ramponi had clearly had enough.

Harold Jones vs Jimmy Reilly - Jones easily took the first 5 rounds but Reilly came roaring back. Neither man went down in this one, and Reilly had major swelling, but it was close at the end. I had it 8-6 Jones, and the crowd jeered when the 8-6 Reilly, 7-6 Jones and 8-7 Reilly decision was read. Jones landed over 500 shots, was accurate at 50.8% and allowed Reilly only 276 shots landed for a 16.5% connect rate yet still lost the decision.

Steve Johnston vs Young Starr - Johnston boxed effortlessly for the first 2 rounds, then Starr tagged him a few times in the 3rd. In the 4th, Johnston caught Starr coming in with a viscious combination that ended Starr's dream of glory with the KO.

Greg Haugen vs Rick Yoshimura-Roberts - A hotly contested bout that saw Haugen cut in the 7th. His corner did well, and he nearly closed both eyes of Yoshimura-Roberts, but neither man could get the edge, though Haugen's punch stats were far better. It was Yoshimura-Roberts that landed the harder shots though, having the favored Haugen in trouble several times. I had Haugen pulling it out 8-6, but the judges saw it differently, scoring it 6-5 Haugen, 7-6 for Yoshimura-Roberts and 7-7 even for the draw. Rematch to follow.

Bruce Flowers vs Roy Andrews - This was expected to be a tactical bout, and it started out that way as they split the first 2 rounds. Flowers tagged Andrews with a wicked combination in the 3rd however that was lights out for Andrews.

Billy Ernst vs Gary Balletto - A good close fight saw Balletto score the first knockdown of the fight in the 11th only to have Ernst pick up the pace, scoring 2 knockdowns in the 13th and another in the 15th to close strong and take the 10-5, 10-5 and 10-4 decision.

Tyrone Crawley vs Sam Bolen - This one started out with bad refereeing as the ref took a point from Crawley in the 1st round for a blow that was on the belt. Bolen then scored a knockdown in the 3rd, and Crawley had to pull himself together. From the 10th round on it was all Crawley as he pulled out the narrow 8-6, 6-7 and 8-5 split decision.

Dennis Pat Brady vs Andy Bowen - A cat and mouse game with Bowen moving well and countering as Brady stormed in throughout the bout. It was close, but Bowen seemed to be forging ahead when Brady tore open a gash on the right eyelid of Bowen to halt the bout in the 14th round for the TKO.

Rematch:

Greg Haugen vs Rick Yoshimura-Roberts - Haugen scored two knockdowns in the 8th and 2 in the 13th, but Yoshimura-Roberts kept coming, actually scoring better in this one, while showing a bit better defense. While I had Haugen winning the first bout, I had Yoshimura-Roberts pulling this one out in the 15th, 8-7. The judges scored it 8-7 for Yoshimura-Roberts, 8-7 for Haugen and 8-7 for the winner by upset split decision Yoshimura-Roberts.

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 11

Round 1 - Part 11:

Paul Armstead vs Texas Jack Burke - A good action bout with Burke stalking and Armstead taking pot shots from the outside. Burke had the early lead, but Armstead seemed to be in control despite several fouls throughout the fight. In the 15th round with Armstead ahead by the slimmest of margins, 7-6, 7-7 and 7-6 he landed his 6th low blow of the fight and was disqualified in a round that he was winning handily, thus he would have won the fight.

George Araujo vs Courtney Burton - An amazing action bout saw Araujo forge ahead early only to have the tough Burton storm back and nearly have Araujo out on his feet on several occasions. Both men seemed punched out near the end of an action packed 9th when Araujo landed a sweet uppercut that nearly ended Burton's night. Fast foward to the 10th, and Araujo, sensing that Burton hadn't fully recovered from the previous round's knockdown, came out head hunting and scored 3 knockdowns in the round, the final one for the 10 count of this highly entertaining slugfest! No defense at all in this one as Burton landed 57.8% of his shots and Araujo landed 50% of his.

Sammy Angott vs James Crayton - Angott did a good job of keeping Crayton at bay in the first 2 rounds, but Crayton scored well in the 3rd, though Angott countered ferociously. Angott was in control again in a solid 3rd, though he suffered a tear on his right eyelid late in the round. His corner couldn't staunch the flow of blood, and it widened late in the 5th for the upset TKO by Crayton on cuts.

George Zengaras vs Wilmington Jack Daly - I had Zengaras sweeping the first 6 rounds, all close with Daly storming back from the 7th on to make things close. In the end of this tactical battle I felt Zengaras held on to win by the slimmest of margins, 8-7 while the judges had it 9-6 Znegaras, 8-7 Daly and 7-6 for the winner by split decision, the favored Zengaras.

Harry Stone vs Walter Edgerton - A slow tactical bout that was too close to call through 10 was ended when Stone reopened a gash over the right eye of Edgerton in the 11th for the TKO.

Sammy Smith vs Joe Ghnouly - Both men had reputations as being light hitters, but Ghnouly landed a big uppercut that dropped Smith to the canvas in the 1st round. Smith also had swelling around his right eye after that round, and it made the difference as the swelling continued though Smith fought back valiantly as they traded rounds for the first 10 rounds. With the swelling getting worse, Ghnouly was able to dictate the pace in the final 5 rounds however to pull off the 7-8, 9-6 and 9-6 upset split decision.

Zahir Raheem vs Freddie Herman - Raheem was able to stop Herman from dancing around the ring, using good footwork and a wicked body attack to score well throughout. He landed a knockdown shot in the 10th, then 3 more in the 14th enroute to the 12-2, 11-4 and 11-3 decision.

Arthur Persley vs Bobby Johnson - A close tactical bout with little action when Persley started to really tee off in an impressive 9th round, opening a gash over the left eye of Johnson. Later in the round however, Johnson landed a brilliant combination that had Persley down for a 9 count and he nearly ended the fight when time ran out in the round. Early in the 10th Persley landed a crushing hook that reopened the cut over the eye of Johnson, ending the fight just as it was starting to heat up for the TKO.

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 12

Round 1 - Part 12:

Lulu Perez vs Horace Leeds - Perez did the stalking, and fought well, but it was Leeds that showed the suprising power, scoring knockdowns in the 6th then again in the 13th. After each knockdown, Perez came back strong in the next few rounds, giving us a very close and very hard fight to score. I had it 8-7 Perez as he took the final round. The judges had it 8-7 Leeds, 9-6 Perez and 9-6 for the favorite Perez!

Young Otto vs David Sample - Otto was the definite favorite, but Sample was clever, moving well and countering with suprising precision, out landing Otto throughout, and nearly closing his right eye to earn the suprisingly easy 10-4, 7-7 (odd score here) and 10-4 majority decision.

Tony Morgano vs Art Simms - A very close tactical bout that saw decent action for only about 1/3rd of the bout. It went the distance with Morgano taking the 9-6, 7-8 and 8-7 split decision.

Jeff Mayweather vs Tracy Spann - Mayweather chose to stand toe to toe with the powerful Spann, and he was out slugged throughout. In the 9th Mayweather was cut under his right eye, but then opened a gaping gash over the right eye of Spann that ended the fight for the come from behind TKO. Spann was up 7-1, 6-2 and 5-3 through the 8th.

Len Matthews vs Larry Stanton - An absolutely brutal bout that saw both men land heavy leather, despite neither man going down. Both men had swelling around the right eye, but Matthews landed the harder shots and closed the right eye of Stanton then pounded him in the corner until the referee halted the bout with 28 seconds left in the 15th. Matthews was up 9-3, 7-5 and 7-5 through 14.

Joe Lopes vs Pee Wee Swingler - Excellent action bout in what was expected to be totally tactical saw Swingler build up a lead then hold on while Lopes tried to forge a comeback. The upset minded Swingler did enough to pull out the decision 8-7, 9-6 and 9-5.

Kenny Lane vs Tommy Tibbs - This one started slow, but Tibbs opened a gash over the right eye of Lane in the 2nd then reopened it for the TKO early in the 3rd round to secure the upset.

Paul Junior vs Andy Watson - Junior lost 2 points due to low blows, but was dominant throughout, building up an insurmountable points lead before a gash on the inside of the brow of Watson ended the fight for the TKO in the 13th round.

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 13

Round 1 - Part 13:

Leavander Johnson vs Julian Wheeler - Johnson started fast, taking the first 6 rounds on my card with a devastating body attack. Wheeler dug deep however, coming back strong in the next 2 rounds only to have Johnson rock him early and often, finally having Wheeler sagging against the ropes when the referee correctly stepped in for the 9th round TKO by Johnson.

Billy Hill vs Ernesto Zavala - Zavala came out throwing crisp shots in the 1st round only to walk into a crushing right hand later in the round by Hill. Zavala survived the round, and his corner did a great job of reviving him as Zavala was the quicker getting off in the 2nd round, then carried it forward with a wicked uppercut that dropped Hill to the canvas for the 10 count 1:40 into the round to hand Zavala a hard fought upset KO.

Arturo Frias vs Brian Adams - Mostly a defensive bout with some good spurts of action. This one went back and forth throughout with Frias opening a cut in the 8th on the forehead of Adams. It wasn't a factor until the 11th when Frias widened it to the point that the fight had to be stopped for the Frias TKO.

Jack Everhardt vs Cisco Andrade - A grueling bout with some terrific action saw Andrade effective in keeping pressure on the slicker Everhardt. Everhardt was able to counter effectively, and was slowly building a lead in a hotly contested bout when in the 8th Andrade landed a cross that tore the left eyelid of Everhardt to halt the bout for the upset TKO.

Roberto Elizondo vs Lou Bizzarro - Bizzarro's footwork and handspeed controlled the pace of the fight for the first 5 rounds, but Bizzarro's patience paid off as he was able to close the gap as Bizzarro started to tire. Through the 12th I had it dead even when Elizondo tore a huge gash on the right eyebrow of Bizzarro midway through the 13th for the TKO of a very entertaining bout.

Ebo Elder vs Jackie Blair - Elder came out dancing, building up a solid lead then scored knockdowns in the 7th, 12th and the KO shot in the 14th. Elder's approach was confusing to Blair as he changed tactics often throughout the fight, sticking and moving, then another round he'd fight close, which disrupted Blair's rythym throughout.

George Dunn vs Tony Chavez - Chavez was very effective in cutting off the ring against Dunn, moving in then ripping the body effectively. Dunn countered very well at times, keeping the fight close, when a hook by Chavez tore open a gash on the hairline of Dunn in the 7th. The cut burst open in the 8th for the TKO on cuts by the underdog Chavez.

Danny Duane vs Michael Clark - Clark was the aggressor throughout, building up a solid lead, but Duane's offense, while limited at times was effective as he caused major swelling around both eyes. Duane started to open up half way through the fight when he understood that Clark could no longer see punches effectively and closed strong. I had Duane winning 9-5, while the judges scored it 8-6 Clark, 10-4 Duane and 7-7 even for the draw.

Rematch:

Danny Duane vs Michael Clark - Most felt that Duane was robbed, and he came out trying to take control early, but after an action packed 1st round he went back into dancing mode, allowing Clark to control the pace. He also landed several low blows, and scored a knockdown in the 8th round, but Clark was unphased, keeping pressure on throughout until in the 12th, with Clark well ahead, Duane landed yet another blow well south of the border for the Clark win by DQ.

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 14

Round 1 - Part 14:

Paddy DeMarco vs Al Davis - This was fought at a furious pace, with Davis ripping devastating shots, scoring a 4th round knockdown. DeMarco fought from the outside offensively throughout, landing combinations seemingly at will, opening cuts on the lip and above the right eye of Davis. While DeMarco landed an amazing 625 shots to 295 for Davis, it was Davis landing the far harder shots. It went the full 15, with the judges scoring it 9-5, 10-4 and 11-3 for DeMarco.

Henry Davis vs John L. Davis - A back and forth bout that saw John L. land the harder shots, but Henry was able to stick and move well at times. I had it 8-6 Henry, while the judges had it 7-7, 7-5 for Henry and 7-7 even for the majority draw.

Leach Cross vs Jackie Donnelly - Cross started slowly, but roared back, building up a solid lead only to have it slip away as Donnelly took control despite a gash on his right eyebrow in the 7th round. It reopened and widened, and with Donnelly seemingly taking control of the fight, Cross reopened it in the 12th for the TKO on cuts.

Eleazar Contreras Jr. vs Ray Estapa - Contreras Jr. was cut in the 3rd round, and fought very well from there, protecting the cut while peppering the slower Estapa from the outside. In the 10th round Estapa landed a hard shot that rocked Contreras Jr., but also broke his right hand, ending the fight for the Contreras Jr. TKO.

George Chaney vs Lou Filippo - This started out close, with both men having some good moments when Filippo stunned the crowd in the 8th with a knockdown. Chaney survived the round, then took control with a strong 9th followed by a devastating hook in the 10th that put Filippo down for the count.

Israel Cardona vs Anthony Fletcher - Cardona used a brutal body attack to build up a slight lead as Fletcher was able to use slick movement and a withering counter attack to keep close. I had Cardona up 8-5 through 13, with Fletcher coming back strong in the final two rounds. Unfortunately he wasn't able to stop Cardona, sending it to the judges (I had it 8-7 Cardona). They scored it 8-7, 9-6 and 8-7 for Cardona.

Tim Callahan vs Andy Ganigan - The light hitting Callahan shocked everyone with a knockdown in the 1st round, but Ganigan controlled the pace from there, scoring well to the body and sapping the leg strength from Callahan. Ganigan scored his own knockdown in the 8th then pummelled Callahan through the 9th then the 10th before the referee stepped in to halt the bout as Ganigan comprehensively dominated in this one for the upset.

Johnny Busso vs Ever Hammer - There were a lot of close rounds in this one, but I had Busso doing the most damage, scoring well from outside and controlling the pace. In the 15th round a cut from the 7th round burst open 30 seconds into the round and that was the end of things for Hammer as Busso moves on with the late TKO.

Rematch:

Henry Davis vs John L. Davis - Henry built up a solid lead, then was cut on the forehead due to an accidental butt in the 7th. John L. came aback strong in the middle rounds, but it appeared that Henry had taken control of things when the cut reopened in the 12th to halt the bout and send it to the scorecards. The judges had it 5-4 for John L., 6-4 for Henry, and 6-4 for John L. who took the upset split decision.

Paddy vs Bummy is a good fight. Ganigan is a beast in the game for his rating. He has iced big time fighters in my tourneys. Though I improved him slightly.
