Hmmm, even though I'm American by berth, I am 1/4th Welsh...lol My Nana was born just outside of Cardiff. That's a book I'd be interested in reading.....

Round 1 - Bout 5

Zolani Petelo (South Africa)(#28) V Fermin Gomez (Mexico)(#37)

Orient Theatre, East London, South Africa

Petelo (left) won the IBF Minimumweight title in 1997 before making five successful defences. He became the last man to fight Ricardo Lopez whilst trying to win the IBF Light Flyweight belt in 2001. Lopez knocked him out in eight rounds.

Gomez was the Mexican Flyweight Champion. He scored 21 out of 28 victories by knockout. He never fought for a World title.

Result:

Zolani Petelo (#28) UD10 Fermin Gomez (#37)

A comfortable points victory for the home man.

Petelo dominated the ring with his left jab, not letting Gomez inside. A sharpe right cross in the sixth cut Gomez over his left eye which further hindered his efforts.

Gomez left the best til last, he went for broke in the tenth round and caused Petelo to cover up on the ropes, it was too little too late.

The decision for Petelo was unanimous.

Petelo will meet the winner of Miguel Canto V Leo Gamez in the next round.

Round 1 - Bout 6

Emile Pladner (France)(#27) V Guty Espadas (Mexico)(#38)

Velodrome d'Hiver, Paris

Pladner's (below left) career took in 133 bouts. He won the European and World Flyweight title as well as a domestic Bantamweight crown. He defeated Corporal Izzy Schwartz before knocking out Frankie Genaro in a round. His challenge to Panama Al Brown for the World Bantamweight crown lasted two minutes.

Espadas stopped Alfonso Lopez in 1976 to win the WBA Flyweight title. He held onto it for two years before dropping a close points decision to Betulio Gonzalez.

Round 1 - Bout 6

Emile Pladner (#27) MD10 Guty Espadas (#38)

These two will have to go at it again, this time in Mexico.

The judges at ringside could hardly be accused of home bias. When the final bell rang most at ringside had 'Milou' a comfortably clear points winner.

The fight itself was poor. Pladner dominated with his left jab and apparently had his opponent running on empty from the seventh round onwards.

One judge had it for Pladner by two, the other two had it even.

The eventual winner of this bout will face the winner of the Panama Al Brown V Rocky Gattellari contest.

Round 1 - Bout 7

Chana Porpaoin (Thailand)(#26) V Little Dado (Philippines)(#39)

National Arena, Bangkok

Porpaoin (left) held the domestic and WBA version of the Minimumweight title. He did it the hard way beating Hideyuki Ohashi on his home turf before defending it eight times. After losing the belt to Rosendo Alvarez he went back to Japan six years later and defeated Keitaro Hoshini.

Dado won the Californian version of the World Title at both Bantamweight and Flyweight. He defeated the likes of Small Montana, Lou Salica, Jackie Jurich and Tony Olivera during a short but active career.

It's time to find out.

After 415 preliminary bouts we are down to 64 of the finest Flyweight scrappers in history.

The Straweight's and the Junior Fly's have been invited to stake their claim.
Off the top of my head, Jimmy Wilde is the Stanley Ketchel of the Flyweights. But, Ricardo Lopez may be to the Straws... what Joe Louis was to the Heavies. I think Ricardo may win this, but Jimmy Wilde will (or should) be right up there.

Round 1 - Bout 7

Little Dado (#39) MD10 Chana Porpaoin (#26)

A solid road win for Dado.

After weathering a fast opening from Porpaoin Dado took control of the middle rounds, landing crisp jabs and right crosses. Neither man was in much trouble during the scrap.

Porpaoin rallied well in the last two rounds, working hard inside, but it was too late.

Dado will meet the winner of Fidel La Barba V Alberto Jimenez in the next round.

Round 1 - Bout 8

Corporal Izzy Schwartz (USA)(#25) V Sot Chitalada (Thailand)(#40)

St Nicks Arena, New York

Schwartz defeated Newsboy Brown to win the NYSAC Flyweight Title. The light hitting New Yorker defeated the likes of Routier Parra, Frisco Grande and Frenchy Belanger. Schwartz found the move up to Bantamweight beyond him, losing in a World title attempt to Bushy Graham.

Chitalada stopped Charlie Magri in only his ninth pro contest to win the WBC version of the Flyweight title. He held the title for over three years before travelling to Japan and dropping a points decision to Yong Kan Kim. Chitalada won back the crown from Kim on home soil and defended it for another two years before being stopped for the first time in his career by Muangchai Kittikasem.

I had a feeling Dado would win that fight! He's in trouble against LaBarba however (yes, I'm certain it'll be LaBarba...lol) Good stuff Tosti!

Rocky Lin lost a SD to Fernando Martinez in the third qualifying round.

Chionoi lost a decision to Dennis Adams.

Adams also knocked out Charlie Magri in the first round of their bout

Round 1 - Bout 8

Sot Chitalada (#40) UD10 Corporal Izzy Schwartz (#25)

Home advantage for Schwartz counted for nothing as Chitalada ran out a comfortable winner.

It was a banal display from Schwartz, who appeared as fresh as a daisy on hearing of his wide margin points loss.

The only memorable moment of the fight came in the second round when Chitalada landed a good right hook, forcing his opponent to cover up on the ropes.

Chitalada will meet the winner of Michael Carbajal V Koji Kobayashi.

Round 1 - Bout 9

Candido Tellez (Mexico)(#24) V Terry Allen (England)(#41)

Mexico City

Tellez held both the Mexican and NABF Flyweight titles. His heavy punching allowed him to stop 29 of his 44 opponents. Tellez never fought for a world title but defeated the likes of Lupe Madera, Ian Clyde and Miguel Canto.

Allen (below) was a light hitting technician. He held British, European and World titles at Flyweight. He outpointed Honore Pratesi to lift the world title, but was unable to defend it after dropping a decision to Dado Marino.

Round 1 - Bout 9

Terry Allen (#41) UD10 Candido Tellez (#24)

In arguably the best performance of the round so far Allen totally outclassed the hometown fighter.

Two judges gave the fight to Allen by 99-91, there were no arguments from the Mexican crowd.

Allen was on top from the third round onwards, surprisingly he wobbled his man with a right cross in the fourth round, which turned out to be the turning point of the bout. Tellez tried to force the fight but had no answer to Allen's defensive skills and the Mexican's efforts were met with a sharp jab and right cross combo time after time.

Allen will meet the winner of Myung Woo Yuh V Johnny Buff in the next round.

Yaoito was a light hitting boxer who fought 66 times in a 7 year career. He was both a National and Regional Champion at Flyweight. In his only attempt at the World level he was knocked out by Pascual Perez in 1959.

Yuri Arbachakov was a great champion - he should go deep in this.

Round 1 - Bout 10

Yuri Arbachakov (#23) TKO9 Sadao Yaoito (#42)

There was no escape for Yaoito.

Troubled by the power of Arbachakov from the opening bell, Yaoito did well to last as long as he did. He tried mixing it with Arbachakov from the midway point, but couldn't cope.

The end came in the ninth when Arbachakov scored the fight's first knockdown after a heavy combination. Yaoito got to his feet but was down immediately after shipping a right cross, the Japanese fighter got to his feet once more but referee Krupenich had seen enough.

Arbachakov will meet the winner of Midget Wolgast V Jimmy Chong in the next round.

Up next ..............
