The Mighty Atoms - All time Flyweight Championship

Who's the best of the 'little men'?

Jimmy Wilde?

Ricardo Lopez?

Fidel La Barba?

It's time to find out.

After 415 preliminary bouts we are down to 64 of the finest Flyweight scrappers in history.

The Straweight's and the Junior Fly's have been invited to stake their claim.

Result:

Beibis Mendoza (#32) UD10 Baby Jake Matlala(#33)

Mendoza pounded Baby Jake throughout.

The South African decided to mix it with the local boy and failed. From the opening bell the Colombia through a huge range of withering hooks to both body and head which simply left Matlala helpless.

Even though Mendoza appeared to have punched himself out by the end of the eighth round it was too late for Matlala. As the visitor went for broke in the last round he walked into a right cross and sprawled to the deck for the fights only knockdown. He bravely got to his feet but the result as the final bell rung was a formality.

The judges had it 98-91, 97-92, 98-91 for Mendoza.

Mendoza will meet the winner of Jimmy Wilde (#1) V Shoji Oguma (#64)

Next up............

Result:

Jackie Jurich (#34) UD10 Raton Mojica (#31)

A walk in the park for Jurich.

It was a strangely hesitant performance in front of his home crowd by Mojica.
Jurich was on top throughout behind a good left jab.

Mojica's corner were pressing their man to 'go for broke' from the seventh round onwards but he seemed to freeze. When he did try and up the ante in the last round he was given a boxing lesson by Jurich who landed his jab and right cross at will.

Jurich will meet the winner of Pancho Villa (#2) V Dennis Adams (#63) in the next round.

Next fight ............

Round 1 - Bout 3

An all British affair.

Rinty Monaghan (Northern Ireland)(#30) V Percy Jones (Wales)(#35)

Kings Hall, Belfast

Rinty (below left) is an Irish boxing legend. He held the World, European, British and Commonwealth titles at Flyweight. The World title win came in 1947 after outpointing Dado Marino. He also recorded victories over Maurice Sandeyron, Terry Allen, Jackie Patterson and Emile Famechon. Monaghan was famous for his post fight singing efforts in the ring.

Jones held British, European and IBU World Flyweight titles. From a Welsh mining family Jones started his boxing career in the booths before turning pro.The Great War interrupted his boxing career and Percy enlisted in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was serving as a sergeant when he was badly wounded in the leg. After almost 30 operations to save the leg it was eventually amputated. Jones was also badly affected by poison gas. He died of trench fever in 1922 on Christmas Day, one day short of his 30th birthday.

Result:

Percy Jones (#35) UD10 Rinty Monaghan (#30)

They'll be singing in the valleys after this one.

Jones ran out a comfortable winner at the Kings Hall.

The home man tried to close Jones down but was met with a piston like jab and firm right cross for his troubles.

With six minutes to go Monaghan was evidently behind on the cards and went for broke. The gamble backfired, as Monaghan moved inside Jones picked him off with a right hook to score the fights only knockdown.

Jones got on his bike for the last round to secure a unanimous 97 to 93 decision.

Jones will meet the winner of Pascual Perez V Jackie Brown

Up next..... Dodie 'Boy' Penalosa V Betulio Gonzalez

I always liked Gonzalez, and his three fight series with a prime Miguel Canto was excellent.

Yes! I might be a bit biased here as my great-grandad used to live in the same street as Percy Jones.

Quite surprised that there hasn't been a book written about him Discoll and the other Welsh boxers of that era.

Result:

Betulio Gonzalez (#36) TKO8 Dodie 'Boy' Penalosa (#29)

Spurred on by his home crowd Penalosa put up a brave but fruitless performance.

He was troubled throughout by the power punches of Gonzalez. Time and again his ryhthm would be broken up by a hard right cross from the visitor.

Gonzalez had his man in trouble in the first round but it took him until the sixth to record a double knockdown.

Penalosa fought back well in the seventh, with the home crowd scenting a turnaround, but it was not to be as Dodie found himself on the deck again in the eighth round after a right hook. He got to his feet but was parked on his backside immediately after another rapier like right cross. Although he beat the count referee Montero had seen enough.

Gonzalez will meet the winner of Ricardo Lopez V Eyup Can in the next round.

Coming soon ......... Zolani Petelo V Fermin Gomez

Funny you should mention it. This came out in February.
