Lightweight 3rd Round- Part 1 of 8

- Floyd Mayweather 76-3-4 (40) UD10 Brandon Rios 16-6 (9)

- After a heated war of words leading into the fight Mayweather promised to make an example out of Rios. After being thoroughly out-boxed in the first three rds Rios landed a chopping right hand in the fourth that rocked Floyd and he followed up nicely over the final minute. The second half of the fight was all Floyd and he dropped Brandon in the final round with an UC en route to a UD, 99-90c2 & 98-91

- Carlo Orlandi 16-6 (2) SD10 Phillip N'Dou 11-10-1 (7)

- Juan Manuel Marquez 57-7 (33) UD10 Emory Cabana 12-9-1 (2)
- Frankie Randall 35-6-1 (26) KO3 Hoacine Khalfi 15-7 (6)

- California Jackie Wilson 35-5-2 (14) KO9 Pee Wee Swingler 12-10 (4)
- Packey McFarland 32-8-3 (16) D10 Jim Watt 18-3-1 (11)

- A bruising inside affair saw McFarland suffer a nasty gash over his right eye in the fourth round and struggle with Watt's southpaw style throughout. Packey carried the final three rounds with a windmill attack to secure the draw.

- Sam Langford 77-5-4 (61) KO4 Matt Zegan 12-10-1 (4)
- Hector Camacho 50-11-2 (4) MD10 Isaac Hlatshwayo 36-22-5 (3)

- This was another grueling and foul filled inside battle. But McFarland was able to floor Jim in the fourth with an UC and outwork him to a UD, 95-93 & 96-92x2

- Luis Federico Thompson 35-6-2 (11) SD10 Lenny Mancini 13-6-3 (5)

- The elder Mancini had a rough draw here and Luis was just too fast for him and he floored him with a 3 punch combo in the 3rd. Lenny had some solid moments inside during the middle rounds, but the judge that scored it for him was watching a different fight than I saw. 97-92, 95-94 & 94-96

- Beau Jack 19-1-2 (10) UD10 Jacques Prigent 13-9 (6)

Lightweight 3rd Round- Part 4 of 8

- Battling Nelson 19-2-1 (13) UD10 Al Nevarez 11-10-1 (4)
- Jimmy Carter 21-1 (9) UD10 Maxie Strub 14-7-1 (1)
- Al Singer 20-2 (5) UD10 Billy edwards 10-10-2 (6)
- Juan Lazcano 29-8-5 (19) TD4 Jaimie Rangel 14-7-1 (8)
- Lockport Jimmy Duffy 16-5-1 (4) UD10 George Araujo 15-7 (7)
- Arturo Gatti 60-22-2 (34) TKO7 Tommy Cleary 13-7-2 (3)
- Jose Cotto 17-3-2 (13) KO5 Billy Thompson 12-7-3 (2)
- Rufe Turner 20-2 (10) TKO9 Jeff Mayweather 13-8-1 (3)
- Edwin Rosario 33-5-4 (28) TKO7 Freddie Dawson 18-2-2 (3)

- This is the first lower seed to win more than it is a big upset. Rosario's power struck early and he floored Dawson with a crushing right at the two minute mark of the opening round. Freddie regained his feet and soldiered on behind a stiff jab and some sharp combos. But he couldn't keep Rosario off of him and three more knockdowns sealed his fate in round seven. Chapo is a handful when he is on like he was here.

- Art Simms 12-8-2 (3) UD10 Phillip Holiday 18-4 (10)

- This was a major upset as the lightly regarded Simms out-boxed a shockingly lethargic Holiday over ten dull rounds. 97-95x3

- Billy Petrolle 20-2 (20) TKO8 Cesar Orta 12-8-2 (2)
- Jem Driscoll 38-4-2 (9) UD10 Julian Wheeler 11-11 (1)
- Florentino Fernandez 53-10-1 (46) UD10 Patsy Sweeney 10-12 (6)
- Ricky Quiles 14-8 (1) UD10 Hugo barraza 11-10-2 (8)
- Nate Campbell 16-4-2 (15) TKO7 Lee Meager 8-13-1 (5)
- Sammy Angott 12-9-1 (2) MD10 Arturo Lomeli 15-5-2 (3)

Rematches:

- Juan Lazcano 30-8-5 (19) UD10 Jaimie Rangel 14-8-1 (8)

- Ted Lewis 70-11-5 (25) TKO10 Andy Bowen 13-6-3 (2)
- Billy Ernst 19-2-1 (10) TKO8 Rafael Ruelas 12-8-2 (8)
- Acelino Freitas 31-12 (15) UD10 Benny Valgar 13-8-1 (1)

- Surprisingly easy win for Popo. He dominated valgar throughout and took every round on one card.

- Humberto Soto 47-16-2 (17) MD10 Mel Middleton 8-12-2 (3)
- Davey day 14-4-4 (4) UD10 George Scott 16-3-3 (3)
- Diego Corrales 35-6-1 (22) TKO8 Miguel Callist 12-8-3 (7)

- Chico was floored by a right hand in the first and cut over his left eye in the third. Then he turned it up and dropped Callist five times, including 3 in the eighth for the automatic stoppage.

- Aldo Spoldi 18-4 (6) TKO10 Saul Duran 13-9 (12)
- Vilomar Fernandez 16-3-3 (1) UD10 Jonathan Dele 10-9-3 (2)
- Gato Gonzalez 14-7-1 (12) TKO5 Ali Funeka 17-5 (6)

- They traded on even terms for the first four and a half rounds in a fats paced and exciting battle. Then Gato unloaded a left hook that sent Funeka staggering into the ropes where Gonzalez unloaded several more hooks that had Ali paralyzed on his feet until the ref intervened.

- Jimmy Paul 20-2 (11) TKO7 Al Davis 14-8 (10)

- the Ringmaster put on one of the most impressive performances of the tourney as he completely dominated Bummy from the opening bell before flooring him three times in the seventh. I was really looking forward to this and it was a clinic.

- Lulu Costantino 18-4 (2) UD10 Gilberto Serrano 9-13 (2)
- Maxie Docusen 17-4-1 (2) TKO9 Herb McCoy 12-6-4 (2)

- Juan Albornoz 28-13-2 (8) UD10 Baby Cochet 6-15-1 (2)
- Cornelius Boza-Edwards 33-10 (21) TKO3 Frank Erne 18-4 (9)

- Erne looked razor sharp, he dropped Boza in the second with a straight right and opened a hideous gash on Edwards eye lid early in the third. After the doctor checked it out they engaged in a furious exchange until Boza connected with a searing UC that sent Erne crashing to the canvas. he barely beat the count and the ref had to stop it twenty seconds later when Erne could no longer defend himself along the ropes.

- Orzubek Nazarov 18-4 (14) TKO2 Amir Khan 33-8-1 (19)

- Khan boxed beautifully for almost the entire opening round. With eleven seconds left Nazarov dropped a cross flush on his chin that sent Amir to the canvas. He was up at six, but his legs were gone and Orzubek dropped him three more times in the first half of round two for the stoppage.

- David Diaz 25-16-1 (10) KO2 Pedro Montanez 15-6-1 (11)

- Big upset as David's first real shot of the fight was a wicked UC that landed flush on the chin and knocked Pedro cold 20 seconds into round two.

And there goes Buffalo's representative. Probably stayed out too late the night before with Jimmy Slattery ... Johnny Bizzarro of nearby Erie, Pa. bows out, too, leaving Buffalonians to adopt Pittsburgh's Paul Spadafora (assuming he doesn't get arrested or just disappear), much as Bills fans around here seem to adopt the Steelers at this time of year ...

I improved Kansas up to an 8 because I think he is underrated by the system. And he still got run over.

- Danny Garcia 14-5-2 (9) D10 Jesse James Leija 20-20-2 (7)

- Very close throughout with almost every round questionable. Amazing that all 3 judges came up with 95-95, but it seemed fair.

- Juan Valenzuela 9-11-1 (4) UD10 Akio kameda 11-9-1 (7)
- Rafael pineda 17-4 (11) TKO3 Ajib Albarado 10-11 (2)

Rematches:

- Danny garcia 15-5-2 (9) SD10 Jesse James leija 20-21-2 (7)

- garcia started quickly and dominated the first four rounds. The veteran came on from there and they engaged in several prolonged exchanges. Leija took the last two rounds that were nonstop action, countering brilliantly against the onrushing Garcia. This times the judges were all over the place and danny took the split duke, 97-93x2 & 94-96

Welterweight 3rd Round- Part 1 of 8

- Pernell Whitaker 61-2-2 (15) UD10 Donato Paduano 12-9-1 (2)
- Thomas Hearns 113-11 (88) KO2 Hercules Kyvelos 12-9-1 (8)

- A nondescript opening round nearly turned into the biggest upset of the tournaments. hearns was gauging the distance and working exclusively behind his jab to pile up points when Hercules connected with a winging right that put Tommy flat on his back with 20 seconds left in the first. Hearns barely beat the count and floundered around the ring for the remaining seconds of the round. The Hitman gathered himself in the opening minute of round two, then he dropped a vicious cross on the point of Kyvelos chin that dropped him face first at Hearns feet like he had been shot in the back of the head.

- Joe Napoles 22-0 (14) TKO7 Yuriy Nuzhenko 12-7-3 (9)
- Ray Leonard 75-4-4 (38) TKO2 Albert Badoud 13-9 (6)
- Shane Mosley 54-10 (34) UD10 Dick Case 12-8-2 (3)
- Roberto Duran 70-13-2 (45) TKO8 Saul Alvarez 11-11 (8)

- Ugly beating for Alvarez. He was competitive in the first three and then Duran started pounding his face into a swollen mess. 3 knockdowns in the eighth ended matters.

- Ray Robinson 42-1 (35) TKO2 Peter Malinga 15-6-1 (6)
- Mickey Walker 55-5-4 (39) UD10 Larry Barnes 15-6-1 (4)
- Izzy Jannazzo 19-3 (3) TKO2 Jimmy Garrison 12-10 (2)
- Henry Armstrong 62-3-1 (55) TKO5 Ramon LaCruz 12-9-1 (5)
- Luis Rodriguez 41-1-1 (16) UD10 Don Jordan 13-8-1 (2)
- Oscar delaHoya 76-5-4 (43) UD10 Carlos Baldomir 12-10 (6)
- Buddy McGirt 49-8-6 (21) UD10 Roman Alvarez 8-14 (2)
- Manny Pacquiao 100-5-1 (89) TKO3 Dave Green 9-12-1 (4)
- Floyd Mayweather, Jr. 78-3-4 (41) UD10 Bruno Visintin 10-8-4 (3)
- Jimmy McLarnin 19-2-1 (6) UD10 Baby Joe Gans 15-5-2 (1)

Welterweight 3rd Round- Part 2 of 8

- Willie Ludick 13-7-2 (8) KO7 Owen Ziegler 20-1-1 (5)

- Ludick pulled the first upset and he did it in dominant fashion. Owen couldn't get started and Willie controlled the fight until ending it with a crushing left hook early in round seven.

- Kid Gavilan 22-0 (4) TKO4 Angel Espada 12-8-2 (1)
- Felix Trinidad 56-6-1 (45) TKO2 Sammy Luftspring 12-10 (4)
- Wilfred Benitez 59-3-1 (19) TKO4 Sylvester Mittee 12-9-1 (9)
- Gustav Eder 21-0-1 (11) UD10 Pedro Vilella 11-11-1 (3)
- Billy Backus 21-0-1 (6) D10 Ralph Charles 12-7-3 (10)
- Miguel Cotto 38-4-1 (29) TKO7 Charlie Shipes 11-9-2 (2)
- Zab Judah 40-3 (24) TKO4 Gabe Terronez 11-10-1 (5)
- Virgil Akins 21-1 (10) UD10 Yoshinori Takahashi 10-9-4 (4)
- Carmen Basilio 36-6-1 (19) UD10 Frederic Klose 7-11-4 (3)
- Charles Kemmic 13-8-2 (3) DQ3 Donald Curry 33-8-1 (22)

- The Lone Star Cobra was doing his thing over the first two rounds. In the third he floored Kemmic with a wicked UC for a seven count. Donald unleashed a barrage that dropped Charles to a knee and then Curry unloaded a wicked hook that flattened Kemmic while he was down. There was no reviving him in the following minutes and Curry was DQ'd in disappointing fashion.

- Emile Griffith 56-5-2 (12) UD10 Steve Halaiko 11-9-2 (4)
- Jack Britton 20-2 (6) UD10 Arturo Gatti 61-23-2 (35)
- Oba Carr 21-1 (8) SD10 Eddie Armstrong 11-9-2 (4)
- Barney Ross 58-4-3 (19) UD10 Jean Josselin 10-10-3 (3)
- Jackie Fields 20-2 (7) DQ3 Mark Melligan 7-14-1 (5)

Rematches:

- Ralph Charles 13-7-3 (11) KO10 Billy Backus 21-1-1 (6)

- The most unlikely perfect record in all of the tournaments finally went down when the Brit dominated Backus in their rematch before finishing him with a barrage in the final round. This was after most observers thought Billy had edged their first fight.

Welterweight 3rd Round- Part 3 of 8

- Luis Collazo 18-1-3 (5) UD10 Vic Cardell 13-7-2 (3)
- Paul Williams 55-7-1 (31) SD10 Packey McFarland 33-9-3 (16)

- They swapped the first four rounds and then things got violent. McFarland wasn't used to seeing this kind of length and it showed. He was, however, right at home with the volume and they traded heavily over the final six rounds, each of them reached double figure points in every round, with both scoring heavily in every round.

The sixth was savage, Williams scored with 3 heavy UC's early in the round that violently snapped back Packey's head, but McFarland forged his way off the ropes and ripped off a vicious volley to the body. They spent the final thirty seconds battering each other on the inside. The pace never slowed and the decision was a mystery until they raised the Punisher's arm, 96-95, 97-94 & 94-96

- Johann Orsolics 16-3-3 (8) UD10 Michael trabant 11-9-2 (2)
- Antonio Margarito 20-1-1 (13) DQ4 David Cervantes 9-12-1 (1)
- Vernon Forrest 31-5-6 (15) UD10 Luis federico Thompson 35-7-2 (11)

- Very tight and tactical battle. Forrest kept Luis behind his jab and staggered him in the second and fourth with hard right hands. Thompson found his range over the second half and closed strong in the final two rounds but he fell just short as The Viper took the UD, 96-95x3

- Simon Brown 35-5-2 (28) TKO3 Jose Luis Lopez 31-10-1 (12)

- A tremendous display of power from one of the dark horses in this field. They fought fairly evenly in the first two action packed rounds until two crushing right hands hurt the iron chinned Lopez at the end of the second. He never recovered as Mantequilla jumped on him early in the third and floored him with another over hand right for a six count. Lopez showed a ton of heart as Simon mercilessly hammered him along the ropes, but the ref did the right thing and stopped the slaughter.

- Billy Graham 15-4-3 (4) UD10 Adolfo Viruet 12-9-1 (4)
- Joe Walcott 19-3 (11) KO3 Floyd Mayweather, Sr. 14-8 (11)
- Ricky Hatton 36-7 (28) UD10 Gert Bo Jacobsen 10-9-3 (3)
- Juan Albornoz 29-13-2 (8) UD10 Luther Rawlings 16-2-4 (4)
- Ike Quartey 29-10-3 (18) UD10 Rodolfo Gomez 10-12 (5)
- Rube Ferns 19-3 (8) UD10 Del Flanagan 12-10 (4)
- Don Williams 14-6-2 (5) UD10 Harry Lewis 15-7 (6)
- Kid Azteca 19-2-1 (7) TKO8 Honey Mellody 11-9-2 (3)
- Marty Servo 16-2-4 (2) UD10 Dick Sandall 11-11 (7)
- Alfonso Gomez 19-1-2 (4) D10 Alfredo Cota 11-10-1 (5)

Rematches:

- Alfredo Cota 12-10-1 (5) UD10 Alfonso Gomez 19-2-2 (4)

- Gomez dropped him in the 8th and was the busier fighter, but the judges saw it the other way. 95-94x3
