Middleweights 3rd Round- Part 8 of 8

- Al Hostak 17-4-1 (8) MD10 Bobby Watts 16-3-3 (5)

- This was a poor decision after a solid fight. Watts outboxed Al early and dropped him in the third with a counter hook. Hostak forged his way inside and scored his own knockdown with a combo in the seventh. With things fairly tight, Watts boxed brilliantly over the last two rds only to hear, 95-93, 96-94 & 94-94. One judge gave Hostak the last two rounds and that was particularly criminal.

- Gerald McClellan 33-8-1 (29) UD10 Gene Armstrong 15-5-2
- Frank Klaus 18-3-1 (7) UD10 Jose Gonzalez 11-8-4 (5)
- James Shuler 17-4-1 (9) UD10 Jack Bonner 11-8-3 (7)
- Jock Malone 16-5-1 (1) SD10 Cyrille delannoit 15-5-2 (2)
- Wilbert McClure 16-3-3 (2) UD10 Coley Welch 14-7-1 (6)
- Young Corbett III 34-8-1 (6) UD10 Kevin Finnegan 12-8-2 (3)
- Iran barkley 53-9-1 (43) TKO6 Tony Sibson 16-6 (12)

- What was expected to be a war, turned out to be just that. The first round was a violent round with barkley hurting Sibo with a cross mid-round and Tony, with his eyes already swelling, nearly doubling Barkley over with a hook to the body just before the bell. After Sibson edged the hotly contested second, the Blade took over the next two rounds behind his underrated jab and some nasty UC when Sibson got inside. Iran nailed Sibo with a murderous hook early in the sixth that buckled his legs, from there he rained down a series of clubbing right hands until the ref stepped in. It could have been premature, but no doubt Sibson was in a bad way.

- Teddy Yarosz 13-6-3 (1) D10 Phil Moyer 11-10-2 (2)
- Vince Dundee 19-2-1 (3) UD10 David lemieux 15-7 (10)

- Dundee got off the deck in the third and survived a few other scary moments from the heavy hitting Canadian to box his way into the next round.

- Jack lalor 16-4-2 (2) UD10 Ted Wright 13-9-1 (6)
- Joe Greene 33-10 (16) UD10 Charley Fusari 32-9-3 (14)
- Terry Downes 18-4 (11) TSD6 Joey Archer 14-4-4 (2)

- An unfortunate clash of heads ended this close fight halfway through and produced a big upset for the Englishman. No matter the unsatisfying ending, Downes pulled a shocker.

- Solly Krieger 11-12 (6) SD10 Frank Tate 30-10-3 (9)

- Krieger followed up his stunning win over hank Casey with another upset. This time, however, he was given a dubious nod over a man who pressed the fight from the opening bell and was credited with landing 341 blows to solly's 202. Rough way to go out for Tate, who I gave 7 rounds. The judges went with the Cinderella story, 95-94, 96-94 & 95-96

- Georgie Abrams 16-3-3 (3) D10 Henry hank 23-12-8 (9)
- Vinnie Curto 26-13-3 (7) TKO5 Willie Lewis 14-9-1 (5)

Rematches:

- Teddy yarosz 14-6-3 (1) UD10 Phil Moyer 11-11-2 (2)
- Georgie Abrams 17-3-3 (3) UD10 Henry hank 23-13-8 (9)

Light Heavy 3rd Round- Part 1 of 8

- Tommy Gibbons 38-2-4 (9) TKO2 Billy Wagner 12-10 (6)
- Roy Jones, Jr. 79-4-3 (52) TKO1 Donny Lalonde 13-9 (10)

- Roy used the Golden Boy to send a message with a brutal display of speed and combination punching. Lalonde never went down, but he couldn't avoid anything Roy threw his way. The fight ended with a dazzling display of at least 6 consecutive left hooks crashing off of Lalonde's chin and his futile attempts to cover up were more than the ref could take.

- Ezzard Charles 42-2 (26) TKO8 Vicente Rondon 11-9-2 (6)
- Bob Fitzsimmons 59-6-1 (45) KO10 David Sears 17-5 (11)
- Joe Calzaghe 39-2-1 (22) TKO4 Roberto Perez 19-19-4 (10)
- Harry Matthews 36-5-3 (20) TKO7 Jimmy Adamick 36-7-1 (32)
- Young Stribling 40-3-2 (15) KO4 Rocky Jones 15-26-3 (5)
- Philadelphia Jack O'Brien 20-1-1 (6) UD10 Mark Tessman 8-13-1 (2)
- Bob Foster 36-8 (24) KO8 Kenny Bowman 13-9 (5)
- Archie Moore 37-3-4 (24) TKO5 George Gardiner 29-11-4 (8)

- Tremendous showing from Archie as he blistered Gardiner from the outset, flooring him in the third with a combo and blasting him back to the Middle tourney with a resounding drubbing.

- Jimmy Bivins 41-3 (16) UD10 leo Lomski 19-3 (16)

- Bivins was cut over his left eye thirty seconds into the fight. But he overcame that and Lomski's roughhouse tactics to box brilliantly over the second half of the fight. He floored Leo with a check hook in the seventh and cruised down the stretch, 96-92x3

- Harold Johnson 36-2-6 (10) SD10 Jack Delaney 17-5 (11)

- This could easily be a quarterfinal and it was contested as such. After a close first Delaney was ripping off body shots in the second and he sent sweat flying with a double hook to the head. As he advanced Howard countered with a short cross that decked Bright Eyes for an eight count. After Johnson dominated the third with sharp combos they fought evenly, including a hectic seventh that saw both men landing almost at will. Johnson was hurt early in round eight with a right hand but he quickly turned the tide with a counter hook and proceeded to have the most lopsided round of the fight. Delaney closed strong in the tenth, but he fell just short, 97-93, 94-96 & 96-94

- Tiger Jack Fox 22-0 (13) KO1 Prince Ajamu 12-10 (7)
- Jack Dillon 21-1 (12) UD10 Andre Thysse 20-20-5 (11)
- Dwight Qawi 38-3-1 (21) UD10 John Scully 20-19-4 (6)
- John Henry Lewis 21-1 (11) UD10 Bobby Stininato 11-11 (2)

Light Heavy 3rd Round- Part 2 of 8

- Michael Moorer 41-2-1 (33) TKO2 Roddy Macdonald 12-8-2 (7)
- Barnard Hopkins 37-3-4 (18) UD10 Battling Bozo 16-5-1 (4)
- Leonard Morrow 16-4-2 (9) TKO6 Dick Tiger 36-6-2 (13)

- Tiger was going about his business of roughing Morrow up inside and Leonard had bad cuts over both of his eyes by the end of the fifth round. With the end feeling near, Morrow snatched lightning in a bottle when he floored Tiger with a devastating hook. Dick was up on wobbly legs at seven but Morrow didn't let him off the hook. He battered him along the ropes until the ref stepped in.

- Georges Carpentier 21-1 (20) TKO7 Jack Bodell 24-19-1 (18)
- Stanley Ketchel 39-5 (36) KO1 Ray Anderson 12-10 (6)

- Billy Conn 38-2-4 (8) UD10 Andrew Maynard 16-5-1 (9)
- Michael Spinks 40-3-1 (21) TKO5 Uriah Grant 29-12-1 (23)

- Spinks came out listless and Grant made him pay with a dominant opening round. A wild right hand at the end of the second put Spinks on the canvas for a six count. That was his wake up call and he unloaded on Grant from the beginning of the third until midway through the fifth when the gutsy Uriah was saved from himself.

- Prince Charles Williams 20-0-2 (9) TKO5 Gerhard Hect 15-5-2 (6)

- Tuffy griffiths 18-3-1 (11) UD10 Billy Jones 14-7-1 (5)
- Maxie Rosenbloom 35-7-2 (8) UD10 Henry hank 23-14-8 (9)
- Antonio tarver 19-3 (12) KO7 Glenn Robinson 12-9-1 (7)
- George Courtney 16-5-1 (11) UD10 Joe Knight 19-3 (15)

- Courtney dropped Knight in each of the first two rounds and fought well enough from that point on to eliminate a big name in this upset, 96-93 & 95-93x2

- Joey Maxim 19-2-1 (5) UD10 Paul Briggs 11-8-3 (8)
- Bob Godwin 16-6 (6) TKO6 Michael Nunn 37-6-1 (9)

- A tight fight was abruptly ended when a right hand opened a hideous cut over Michael's left eye and the fight was stopped immediately.

- Tommy Loughran 34-5-5 (8) UD10 Jimmy Slade 33-8-3 (5)
- Melio Bettina 21-1 (15) KO10 Danny green 40-18-5 (27)

- In one of the most violent wars to date, Green floored Melio in the second with a clubbing right hand and then hammered him from pillar to post leaving his left eye closing. Bettina nutted up and returned the favor, flooring Green in the third with an UC. From there they waged war on the inside for the next four rounds with both men tallying at least 12 points in each savage stanza. The seventh was particularly violent, with each of them nearly tasting the canvas. That emptied Danny's gas tank and Bettina dropped him in the ninth before finishing him in the tenth with a barrage of power shots.

- Marvin Johnson 19-3 (15) KO1 Abe Bain 12-9-1 (4)
- Mike McCallum 54-10-1 (37) TKO2 Gabriel Campillo 11-9-2 (1)
- Battling Siki 14-8 (4) Sd10 Jimmy webb 10-10-2
- Thomas Hearns 116-11-1 (91) TKO6 Crawford Ashley 12-9-1 (7)

- Tommy found himself on the canvas early in the first to continue a rough round of fights for him. Ashley continued to press until the fifth when a thunderous Hearns right had him reeling around the ring. With the ref looking closely Crawford unloaded a wild right hand that sent Hearns down again. he barely beat the count and was lucky that the round was over. Tommy shrugged it off and floored a tiring Ashley 3 times in the sixth for the stoppage.

- Jeff Harding 19-3 (16) TKO4 Bert Gilroy 13-9 (5)

- Barone fought a negative fight with a lot of holding on the inside. But it netted him a draw.

- Mustafa Wassaja 25-13-4 (4) UD10 Al Gainer 18-2-2 (11)

- The Ugandan added another major upset to this round and he did it by a wide margin. Gainer just didn't have much to offer in this one and a nasty cut over his left eye stunted him further form the fourth on. Mustafa won going away, 98-93x3

- Paul Berlenbach 18-3-2 (15) TKO3 Paul Roux 11-11-1 (5)

- Paul opened quickly as usual and rocked the Frenchman several times in round one with his trademark right hand. Early in the second another right floored Roux for a five count. With Berlenbach seemingly on his way to an early stoppage, Roux launched a desperate right that landed flush and floored Berlenbach for a six count. They traded sloppily to end a crazy round. Roux's revival was short lived as he was floored twice more and stopped in the third.

- Dariusz Michalczewski 18-4 (16) TKO7 Stipe Drews 14-6-2 (5)

- The Tiger has been calling for Roy during this tournament. After this business like performance stopping the Aussie he wont get Roy, but he will get Thomas Hearns.

- Tommy Burns 38-5-1 (18) SD10 Jimmy delaney 9-11-2 (6)

- Burns dominated early behind his speedy combos. In the sixth delaney sent him down hard with a wicked right hand. Tommy barely beat the count and Jimmy charged down the stretch. Burns sucked it up enough to edge the final round and the decision, 96-95x2 & 95-96

Light Heavy 3rd Round- Part 7 of 8

- Henry Maske 16-4-2 (4) UD10 Mose Brown 10-13 (6)
- Reggie Johnson 32-10-4 (14) KO10 James Kinchen 23-21 (20)
- Victor Galindez 18-3-1 (14) TKO2 Billy Fox 14-8 (9)
- Sam Baroudi 15-5-2 (9) KO4 Jack A Johnson 15-4-3 (11)
- Bob Satterfield 30-13 (23) UD10 Yvon Durelle 16-5-1 (14)

- In a fight I never would have pegged to go the distance, they respected each others power early before Yvon struck in the 5th when he floored Bob with a hook. Satterfield rebounded with a big 6th after rocking Durelle early with a right hand. He dropped the Canadian in the 7th with an UC and dominated down the stretch for the UD, 97-91x2 & 96-92

- Mike McTigue 15-4-4 (6) UD10 Jerry Martin 15-7 (9)
- Eddie Mustafa Muhammad 36-5-1 (20) UD10 Dennis Powell 15-6-1 (4)
- Richard Hall 13-9 (10) UD10 Holly Mims 27-12-5 (4)

- Hall's size led to another upset as he dropped Mims twice and won a surprisingly wide decision.

- Andy Kendall 17-3-2 (6) UD10 Santo Amonti 33-8-3 (19)
- Len Harvey 17-4-1 (6) KO10 Gustav Scholz 35-7-2 (9)

- Harvey broke open a high level chess match that saw him down on two cards with an explosive barrage of punches in the final round. He floored Scholz with a 3 punch combo and relentlessly assaulted him with both hands after he rose until an UC separated him from his senses.

- Dennis Andries 16-4-2 (13) UD10 Joe Kahut 29-14 (16)
- Graciano Rocchigiani 32-7-4 (21) UD10 Bob Olin 16-5-1 (7)

Light Heavy 3rd Round- Part 8 of 8

- Alvaro Lopez 15-4-3 (13) TKO3 Tony Anthony 17-4-1 (12)
- Mate Parlov 33-7-2 (12) UD10 JB Williamson 12-8-2 (6)
- Richard Caramanolis 18-3-1 (9) UTD6 Bob Amos 13-8-1 (4)
- Dan Bucceroni 29-12-3 (17) UD10 Eddie Jones 16-5-1 (6)
- Bobby Czyz 41-21-2 (18) TKO7 Lotte Mwale 17-5 (15)
- Jesse Burnett 33-7-2 (14) TKO10 Alex Blanchard 16-7 (16)
- Mehdi Sahnoune 16-6-1 (14) KO5 Benito Michelon 11-10-2 (8)
- Gustave Roth 19-3-1 (3) UD10 Larry Temple 28-13-2 (15)
- Adrian Diaconu 16-5-1 (12) UD10 Anton Christoforidis 16-6 (3)

- Another upset in emphatic fashion. Diaconu swelled up both of Anton's eyes and hammered him on the inside for a wide UD that sent Greece's most famous fighter home, 98-91, 97-92 & 97-93

- George Nichols 20-2 (10) UD10 Don Cockell 35-8-1 (11)
- James Braddock 28-12-4 (11) UD10 Ole Klemetsen 12-11 (10)
- Gene Tunney 38-3-3 (13) TKO9 Silvio Branco 12-9-1 (6)

- In a seeding quirk, Joe Calzaghe gets to enjoy his lofty seed with a 4th round match up against possibly the greatest Light Heavyweight of them all.

- George Byers 28-14-2 (14) SD10 Nathan Cleverly 15-4-3 (7)
- Beibut Shumenov 14-8 (6) UD10 Dingaan Thobela 32-31-2 (18)
- Clinton Woods 16-4-2 (11) D10 Johnny Romero 17-3-2 (10)

- Romero boxed brilliantly in the first four rounds until Woods caught him with a hook that sent him down in the 5th. Johnny rebounded in the next two rounds before Clinton closed strong and scored two more kD's in the 8th and 10th to secure an odd, but just, draw.

- Battling Levinsky 16-4-2 (10) D10 Vonzell Johnson 12-9-2 (6)

- Johnson used his awkward movements and height to befuddle Levinsky for large stretches and earn a draw.

Rematches:

- Johnny Romero 18-3-2 (11) TKO10 Clinton Woods 16-5-2 (11)

- the rematch saw Romero fight like the beginning of the first encounter. With the exception of a 6th round knockdown Woods scored with an UC Johnny peppered him from the outside and turned his face into a crimson mask before it was stopped in the final round due to the blood.

- Battling Levinsky 17-4-2 (10) UD10 Vonzell Johnson 12-10-2 (6)

- the rematch was no contest as Levinsky bulled inside at will and put a beating on the upset minded Johnson, 99-91, 99-92 & 98-92
