Jr Flyweight 4th Round- Part 1 of 4

Rafael Marquez 64-4-2 (44) vs Welcome Ncita 14-7-1 (6)

Marquez used his telephone pole jab to control the opening round while Ncita looked a bit nervous. Welcome opened up in the second better and scored with two clean combos that snapped back Rafa's head. Marquez ripped a hook to the body and Ncita countered with a right hand before a short left hook crashed into the South African's chin and drove him into the canvas like a nail for a dramatic one punch knock out.

Manny Pacquiao 110-5-1 (98) vs Mahyar Monshipour 15-5-3 (8)

Manny swarmed Monshipour at the opening bell, scoring with one straight left after another that brought nasty swelling to Mahyar's right eye and a bad gash over his left by the end of the third round. The Frenchman exhibited his toughness, but he was over matched and after Pacquiao floored him twice in round six the referee mercifully stopped the slaughter.

Wilfredo Gomez 41-4 (31) vs Juan Meza 16-4-2 (11)

Rumors swirled about Wilfredo spending more time partying than he did in the gym and Meza had a nice first round, countering Wilfredo's jabs with nice right hands and digging hooks to the body. Bazooka stormed back in the second and third with his trademark combination punching that put the Mexican back on his heels. Meza took the fourth with some clean right hands while Gomez did very little.

Wilfredo rocked Meza early in round five with a rapid fire 3 punch combo and he took him to task over the full three minutes. The sixth was close as both men fought warily but Juan upped the ante in the seventh with a vicious body attack that saw Gomez breathing heavily at the bell. Meza buckled his legs with a right hand midway through round eight and immediately ripped a hook to the body and a straight right hand that dumped Gomez on the seat of his pants for a seven count. Meza closed the round with two more stinging right hands as the Vegas crowd roared.

Wilfredo, with his left eye swelling badly, swarmed Meza in the ninth and staggered him with a devastating 4 punch combo to the head and body. He went for the kill and battered Juan over the final minute of a dominant round. Gomez came out for round ten breathing heavily and Meza showed his grit by taking the initiative and backing his foe to the ropes where he scored with several hard hooks to the body and head. Round eleven was all Meza, drilling an exhausted looking Gomez with one right hand after another in what could have been a two point round.

Kid came out confident for the final round and greeted Gomez with a hard right hand that drove him into the ropes. Meza opened up with both hands and, showing the heart of a champion, Gomez responded with a beautiful counter hook that floored Meza for a five count. Bazooka could barely lift his arms but he connected with an ugly overhand right to the temple that dropped Meza again for a six count. The rest of the round included more holding than punching but the two knockdowns enabled the heavily favored Gomez to escape with a Draw, 113-112, 112-113 & 113-113

Poonsawat Kratindaenggym 39-5-1 (25) vs Loris Stecca 16-4-2 (5)

The aggressive fighter from Thailand opened well as he ripped off hard body shots and uppercuts to take the first three rounds on all three judges cards. Stecca got his wits about him in the fourth and used swift movement and sharp counters to stem the tide. Poonsawat just didn't have a plan B and the Italian put on a boxing clinic en route to the UD, 116-112 & 116-113 x2

Rematch:

Wilfredo Gomez 41-4-1 (31) vs Juan Meza 16-4-3 (11)

A much more focused Gomez came out using his Boxing skills early in the rematch as he peppered Meza with clean one-twos and moved out of the way with much better defense. That pattern continued until a frustrated Meza went all out in the tenth and a counter right hand dropped him for a six count at the close of the round. Wilfredo closed the show in style, dropping Meza three more times in round eleven for the automatic stoppage and an emphatic statement.

Jr Featherweight 4th Round- Part 2 of 4

Juan Manuel Lopez 41-4-1 (38) vs Roberto Leyva 17-4-1 (11)

Lopez opened strongly with vicious combos to the head and body that had Leyva in all sorts of trouble. Roberto connected with a big right hand towards the end of the round that opened a terrible gash over Lopez right eye. Bothered by the blood JuanMa fought cautiously and little happened in the second. A short hook rocked Leyva early in round three and he punished him with both hands, scoring a slew of unanswered blows until the referee stepped in.

Fabrice Benichou 13-9 (7) vs Rico Ramos 7-15-1 (2)

Benichou had an edge in the first four dreadful rounds when Ramos quickly struck with a laser left hook that dropped Fabrice early in round five. Rico went after him and floored him again with a right hand. Fabrice arose at six and managed to survive the round. They returned to the bland formula that opened the fight and it ended in a fitting draw. 115-111, 110-116 & 113-113

Junior Jones 33-9-4 (17) vs Soo-Hwan Hong 20-19-4 (5)

With the exception of the third round when Hong scored heavily after stunning Jones with a wild hook, Junior was in control throughout. He kept Soo on the end of his jab and scored with frequent right hands on the way to a wide UD victory. 118-109 & 117-110 x2

Erik Morales 62-6 (39) vs Kennedy McKinney 12-7-3 (7)

El Terrible wasted no time taking the fight straight to McKinney and a series of right hands had him in trouble a minute into the fight. Erik maintained his momentum through the second backing Kennedy up with jabs and right hands. McKinney found his range in the third when he repeatedly tagged Morales with clean right hands and left hooks during a huge round. That was to be his fleeting moment as Morales exploded out of his corner for the fourth and rained blows down on Kennedy and he ended the fourth with a nasty welt on his left eye. Erik never relented on his pressure and he pasted McKinney with hard rights to the head and body until a barrage of shots forced the ref to step in midway through the tenth.

Rematch:

Fabrice Benichou 13-9-1 (7) vs Rico Ramos 7-15-2 (2)

Rico used movement and sporadic right hands to continue the unlikeliest of runs with a concise, and dreadfully dull, UD. 117-111 x2 & 116-112

Jr Featherweight 4th Round- Part 3 of 4

Kozo Ishii 13-8-1 (11) vs Lupe Pintor 33-10-2 (18)

Ishii used his speed to take advantage of the slow starting Pintor with rapid combinations as he took the first two rounds. A straight left hand staggered Pintor in the third and Ishii followed up with two wicked 3 punch combos. Guadalupe got going a bit early in the fourth with some nasty hooks to the body. Ishii scored with a hard left and set of a murderous trade until Pintor ripped a hook to the body and brought another upstairs and it connected flush on the chin and put Kozo down and out for a stunning one punch knockout that sets up an all Mexican battle with Erik Morales.

Guillermo Rigondeaux 19-2-1 (4) vs Shigero Nakazato 15-6-2 (8)

The Japanese contingency suffered another blow as the decorated Cuban dominated Nakazato from the opening bell until he floored him early in the fifth with a body shot and iced him moments later with a vicious cross to the head.

Marco Antonio Barrera 60-6-3 (36) vs Junichi Watanabe 11-12 (3)

Marco put an end to watanabe's Cinderella run with a comprehensive beatdown that started to the body and ended with a sizzling hook to the chin early in round ten that left Watanabe motionless on the canvas for several minutes.

Carlos Zarate 42-4 (34) vs Israel Vazquez 20-2 (18)

This bought had a massive crowd in Mexico City immediately on their feet as they engaged in a torrid trade to open the bout when Izzy rocked his foe with a short hook and proceeded to hammer Zarate for the final two minutes of the opening round and already creating a nasty mouse under Carlos's right eye. The pace slowed in the second and Zarate was able to secure the round with some crisp jabs. Vazquez again took over in the third with a nasty body attack and some devastating right hands on his opponents rapidly swelling left eye.

Round four was more of the same as Vazquez forged inside and hammered the rib cage of Zarate and scored with damaging crosses and hooks to the head. Zarate staggered Izzy with a strong right hand midway through the fifth and his persistent jabs drew swelling on Vazquez's right eye. Round six was tight, with Vazquez scoring well on the inside and Zarate controlling things form range, a sharp uppercut stunned Israel just before the bell.

Round seven sent the crowd into hysterics, Izzy hurt Carlos early with a vicious hook and pounded him along the ropes for a good minute before Zarate put Izzy in a bad way with a clean right hand . They traded punishing blows over the final minute of an insanely violent round (20-20). A massive right hand buckled Vazquez knees a half minute into round eight and Zarate took him to the woodshed with a devastating display of combination punching. Late in the round a straight right hand snapped back Izzy's head and Zarate ended the round with a brutal 3 punch combo to the body.

Zarate exploded out of his corner in round nine and slammed three hooks to Vazquez head that opened a severe cut under Izzy's already badly swollen right eye. Carlos ripped off a series of shots to the body and snapped back Vazquez head with an uppercut. Israel battled off the ropes with a 3 pucnh combo that staggered Zarate and they traded huge bombs for a full minute before Vazquez stunned him late with a hard hook to finish a ridiculous round (26-18).

Izzy carried his late momentum into the tenth, pressing Zarate to the ropes and unleashing a relentless assault to the body and head that was spearheaded by a slew of hooks while Zarate countered with clean hooks and uppercuts to the head in another wicked round of combat(13-23). Carlos snapped off quite a few clean jabs early in the eleventh and he hurt Vazquez with a brutal uppercut. Izzy stormed back as if possessed and dropped a violent right hand flush on Zarate's chin that sent him stumbling across the ring and Izzy worked him over there until a right hand crashed into Zarate's chin and floored him for a five count seconds before the bell. The final round once again saw Izzy force carlos to the ropes where they engaged in several heated trades with Vazquez getting the best of things. The Mexican crowd gave them both a standing ovation and their massacred faces told the tale of the epic brawl that had just taken place, but Vazquez took the UD and moved on. 117-112, 116-113 & 115-11

Jr Featherweight 4th Round- Part 4 of 4

Somsak Sithchatchawal 20-2 (14) vs Victor Callejas 21-1 (17)

The first round was three minutes of grueling inside combat with both men scoring heavily to the head and body and refusing to take a backward step in spite of massive punishment and pressure on both sides. Sithchatchawal stunned Callejas early in the second with an uppercut and he took him to task along the ropes for much of the lopsided round. Somsak was in command for much of the third, ripping hooks to the body and head and snapping back Victor's head with uppercuts until Callejas landed a wild right off the ropes that buckled the Thai brawlers legs with a half minute left and Victor connected with a series of shots to the head to close the round.

Callejas carried that momentum into the fourth and he got the best of the exchanges for the first time in the fight, drawing some nasty swelling from Somsak's left eye with repeated flush right hands. Round five was too close to call, Callejas continued to score liberally with his right hand, but Sithchatchawal wobbled him twice late with devastating uppercuts.

Callejas was still on unsteady legs entering the sixth and Somsak battered him around the ring with fierce power shots and a relentless body attack as Callejas appeared to be wilting. A huge hook jarred Victor midway through the seventh and the referee was looking closely as Somsak slammed brutal hooks to the head and body as the round came to a close. Round eight was more of the same with Somsak pressing the issue and scoring heavily over the first minute of the round, then Callejas unleashed a counter uppercut that landed flush and made Sithchatchawal do a little dance while Victor came out of his shoes with a winging hook that crashed into Somsak's chin and put him flat on his back. He rolled over and got up to a knee before slumping back on his face and Callejas came up with the improbable comeback KO!

Celestino Caballero 41-4 (33) vs Tracy Harris-Patterson 27-13-4 (11)

Rematch: Caballero UD10

Patterson smothered his lanky foe over the first two rounds, digging hooks to the body and head while stifling Caballero's offense. In the third Caballero began to score with one-twos and he was able to keep Patterson at a distance while dominating the next four rounds. Early in round seven Celstino dropped Tracy with a hard right hand. Patterson was up at four and he endured a barrage of shots along the ropes before he was able to tie Caballero up. After the ref broke them Tracy wung a hook from the floor that tagged Caballero flush on the chin and put him down for an eight count! With his wobbly legs barely under him, Caballero ate two wicked hooks to the body and another flush on the chin that put him down and folded his legs back. There was no doubt he wouldn't beat the count and Patterson caught lightning in a bottle in a fantastic round.

Sergio Palma 19-3 (6) vs Enrique Sanchez 17-4-2 (11)

The light hitting Palma was able to drop the Mexican in the opening round with a rapid fire 4 punch combo. That set the tone for a Boxing lesson that saw Enrique down again in the fifth and on the wrong end of a lopsided UD, 119-107 x3

Joan Guzman 46-19-2 (22) vs Oscar Larios 32-10-3 (20)

Larios started well over the first five rounds, scoring with combinations and pressuring Guzman to the ropes while Joan struggled to keep him at a distance. Guzman turned things around in the sixth with beautiful movement and defense. A hard right hand buckled Oscar's legs in the seventh and Joan went to work with blazing combos to dominate the round and the eight after it.

Oscar stormed back in round nine with a valiant display as he shook off several booming right hands to rip hooks to the body and uppercuts to the head. The ball was back in Joan's court for the tenth and eleventh as his speed and movement were too much for the Mexican to keep up with. The final round was fought cautiously with little to choose between them and that led to an indecisive decision, 115-112, 113-114 & 114-114

Rematch:

Joan Guzman 46-19-3 (22) vs Oscar Larios 32-10-4 (20)

The rematch was anti-climatic as Guzman used his speed of foot and hand to avoid exchanges for the most part and pepper Larios at a distance. oscar had a mild late rally, but it was far too little and too late. Guzman advances to face Rafael marquez with an impressive, if not exciting UD. 118-110 & 117-111 x2

Featherweight 6th Round- part 1 of 4

Manny Pacquiao 111-5-1 (99) vs In-Jin Chi 20-3-1 (11)

Manny had his typical quick start, pounding Chi with swift left hands for the majority of the opening round. In-Jin took them well, but his right eye was already swelling by the end of the stanza. The South Korean negated the left by smothering Manny during a slower paced second round that included as much grappling as it did punching. A massive left early in the third opened up a bad cut over Chi's already badly swollen right eye and manny followed up with a barrage of shots that In-Jin took well, but led to another lopsided round for Pacquiao.

Chi pressed forward in the fourth and though he ate several left hands he got the best of an elongated exchange by backing Manny to the ropes and landing with hard right hands to the head and body. In-Jin again had the better of things in round five as his volume out dueled the big left hands from the Filipino fighter. Early in the sixth Chi walked into a left hand he didn't see and it buckled his legs. Manny drove him to the ropes and unleashed a furious barrage of shots that saw his cut reopened and blood flying while In-Jin ate shot after shot along the ropes until the referee stepped in.

Nel Tarleton 20-2-2 (5) vs Ruben Olivares 39-8-1 (34)

After a close opening round that saw Olivares connect with some nasty hooks to the body while Tarleton boxed beautifully from the outside, Nel dominated the second and third behind stiff one-twos and frustrating movement that had Olivares incensed heading back to his corner. Rockabye handled it with unbridled aggression and a vicious hook that shook the Brit with a half minute left in the fourth was the punctuation mark on a big comeback round for Olivares.

The next four rounds were all close with Olivares pressing and trying to get off on the inside while Tarleton tied up in close and stuck and moved at range. The rounds weren't epic by any stretch, but they were intriguing and near impossible to score. Olivares turned his legs to a jelly a minute into round nine with a trademark hook and then he ripped off a series of blasts to the head and body that left an exclamation point that the round was his. The next two rounds were back to the tighter pattern with the exception of a wicked uppercut that had blood flowing freely from tarleton's nose from the tenth round on. Nel showed his class with a brilliant sticking and moving exhibition in the final round while Olivares chased and hit nothing but air. In the end the split duke went to the aggressor who landed the harder shots and Ruben advanced to his second sweet 16 , 115-111, 113-115 & 114-112

Marco Antonio Barrera 61-6-3 (37) vs Chris John 21-2-1 (10)

The baby faced Assasin jumped on John in the opening round and scored with some debilitating body shots as well as a couple of well timed left uppercuts to the head in a dominant opening three minutes. John got his jab working in the second and they traded sticks for the first two minutes before the Indonesian fighter was able to win a nice exchange of punches just before the bell. Marco probably edged the third and fourth as he went back to pushing the fight and had John's back on the ropes much of the time as he wailed away to the body while Chris countered with sharp hooks and uppercuts while defending well off of the ropes.

MAB blistered his foe in the fifth with punishing combos to the head and body before Chris boxed masterfully in round six when he used his movement and some nice lead right hands to get Marco off balance enough to throw off his potent offense. Barrera dug two hard hooks to the body about two minutes into a tight round seven that had John in a bad way and Marco landed several clean combinations before the bell. John stuck his jab in marco's face and used his legs well to take round eight.

Chris continued his resurgence in round nine when he landed two dazzling 3 punch combos and tied up the increasingly frustrated Mexican on the inside. John refused to engage in the next two rounds and his defense and reluctance made it impossible for marco to land anything of note as a few jabs from either man was the only offense of note. The first minute of the final round was the same way until Barrera dug a hook into John's side and followed with a left uppercut and hook to the head that staggered Chris. Marco shrugged off attempts to clinch with a blistering double hook that sent sweat flying. John had too many survival skills for MAB to close the show, but he was able to secure the closer than it looked UD, 115-113 x2 & 115-114

Sandy Saddler 45-1 (41) vs Diego Morales 33-11-3 (16)

Saddler dominated Diego in the first four rounds with hard lefts and rights and roughhouse tactics on the inside. Morales connected with a hard hook halfway through the fifth that staggered Sandy and a series of shots to the body followed by a searing uppercut that snapped back his head had him in a bad way as Morales launched shot after shot when the bell came. Not only does Saddler have a granite chin, but he recovered like nothing ever happened and went back to hammering Diego until a devastating series of power shots had Morales out on his feet and the referee stepped in early in round eight.

Featherweight 6th Round- part 2 of 4

Erik Morales 63-6 (40) vs Young Griffo 19-1-4 (2)

After an uninspired opening round that saw Griffo on the move Morales rocketed out of his corner for the second and tagged his foe with three pulverizing right hands. El Terrible battered Young around the ring like a ball, ripping hard hooks to the body and straight right hands to the head. Griffo rebounded and had an edge in the next two rounds as he avoided Erik's bull rushes and countered well with hooks and stiff jabs while taking occasional right hands.

Rounds five and six went back the way of Morales as his aggression and power had Griffo in a defensive stance and even then Erik scored well with his right hand to the body and head. The seventh was tight with young landing some snappy combos while Morales connected with the harder shots. Griffo amped up his offense in round eight and he countered Morales with brilliant 2 and 3 punch combos in the most furious round of the fight.

Rounds nine and ten were all Griffo as Morales struggled to land anything past the jab and defensive wizardry of the Aussie. An enraged El Terrible went ballistic in round eleven and he landed with crushing right hands and uppercuts to the head while Griffo countered with short hooks and uppercuts of his own in three minutes of trench warfare. The pace was the same in the final round, but Erik's barrages overwhelmed the more selective Griffo to clearly take the last round and with it the tight UD, 115-112 & 114-113 x2

Eder Jofre 45-3 (26) vs Robert Guerrero 38-4-4 (11)

Ghost used his size to trouble Jofre in the first two rounds, including opening a nasty cut over his left eye with a right hook during a dominant second round. Then Eder took over with bruising combos to the head and body as Robert struggled to score enough to keep pace. The final three rounds were ugly as Eder pushed for the stoppage, but Robert hung in there and heard the brazilian announced as the UD victor, 118-110 x2 & 117-111

Salvador Sanchez 24-0 (13) vs Terry McGovern 40-5-3 (31)

McGovern's aggression made the counter-punching Sanchez drool and he put on an electrifying performance, tattooing the relentless McGovern with blistering three and four punch combos throughout the entertaining, but one sided bout. Heavy jabs and hooks had Terry's right eye slammed shut as they entered the final round but it didn't stop him from launching a desperate rally and a right hand stunned Sal for the first time in the fight. McGovern unloaded with both hands and connected with two hard rights before a counter hook that he didn't see crashed into his jaw and knocked him unconscious to put the period on Sanchez statement to the Featherweight contestants.

Henry Armstrong 68-3-1 (61) vs Juan LaPorte 38-8-1 (25)

Hank swarmed Juan in the opening round and he bettered him in some enjoyable infighting. Hammerin Hank went homicide in round two when he staggered the PR with a windmill right hand and pounded him along the ropes with both hands for the duration of the round, a violent uppercut split open Juan's lip in the closing seconds of what surely was a two point round. After dropping the third Laporte got it together in the fourth and started to catch henry coming in with hard right hands.

Armstrong's activity took round five, but Juan continued to land some powerful right hands and uppercuts. Early in round six LaPorte connected with a flush right that put Armstrong down for a five count. Sensing the upset, laporte blistered him with one clubbing right hand after another but Armstrong refused to yield even though he returned to his corner with some nasty swelling.

LaPorte kept the momentum and took the seventh with more vicious right hand power shots. That's when Hank showed what he is all about and he overwhelmed Juan in the eighth with a neverending attack of over 140 punches that LaPorte just couldn't match. That was the story the rest of the way, Juan never caved or went down and he landed with his own heavy artillery, but Henry refused to be denied and he took the grueling UD, 116-110, 115-111 & 115-112

Featherweight 6th Round- part 3 of 4

I've gotten long winded on some of the more lopsided and less exciting results because of the name value and that slows my progress as well as it makes for dull reading. Going to try and work on that.

Ernesto Marcel 19-5 (10) vs Chalky Wright 20-1-3 (9)

Wright had a quick start with free throwing combos over the first two rounds before Marcel began to assert himself with a stiff jab and straight right hands. Ernesto dropped him in the sixth with a short hook and after a rally from Chalky he took the last three rounds and the UD, 115-111, 116-113 & 114-113

Vicente Saldivar 21-3 (19) vs Azumah Nelson 41-5 (31)

Nelson got the best of a free wheeling opening round that saw both men staggered early with lead shots from their rival but The professor connected with a winging right hand late and a follow up hook. Azumah's awkward aggression and strength had Vicente pressed against the ropes for much of round three and he scored heavily with his right hand. Saldivar got in his vaunted left hand several times during a hectic fourth round .

A chopping right hand to the temple staggered Saldivar a minute into the fifth and Nelson unloaded with both hands until a short counter hook rocked the Professor. they traded heavily over the final forty-five seconds and Azumah hurt him just before the bell with a wild uppercut. Once again they waged war in round six with both guys getting in heavy leather until the final twenty seconds when Saldivar landed a picture perfect hook that froze Nelson on his feet and he tagged him with five more shots before the bell. Vincente exploded out of his corner for round seven and dug three brutal body shots to Nelson's rib cage and snapped his head straight back with an uppercut. Only Nelson's tremendous chin kept him upright as Saldivar battered him with blow after blow until the referee stepped in and stopped the fight.

Humberto Soto 49-18-2 (18) vs Jose Luis Castillo 99-13-3 (74)

After two surprisingly cautious rounds Castillo hurt Soto with a hook to the body in the third and took him to the proverbial woodshed with vicious combinations to the head and body in what should be a two point round. JLC came out quick in round four and ripped off several hard body shots until Soto countered with a short uppercut that dropped Castillo for a three count. Humberto not only peppered Jose with combos for the remainder of the round but he dominated the next two rounds with sharp and concise punching.

Castillo finally regained his legs in the seventh and he engaged Soto in an inside battle that saw Humberto stunned just before the bell with a short hook. JLC pressed his advantage early in the eighth with a barrage of hooks to the head and body and Soto countered with a blistering 4 punch combination. Soto scored with several one-two's and Jose sent him stammering into the ropes with a hook. The final half minute saw Castillo ravage the body while Humberto countered with nasty uppercuts and hooks to the head in a brutal round(19-17). The ninth was another exercise in violence with no advantage to be found as they scrapped hard on the inside.

Soto got on the move in round ten and he peppered a surprised Castillo with a variety of 3 and 4 punch combos that were light on power but high on scoring points. Castillo dug in over the final six minutes and pressed Soto to the ropes where he out-worked him mainly to the body while Soto kept it close with flashier counters to the head. At the end the judges were split, but Soto advanced 115-111, 113-114 & 115-112

Willie Pep 23-0-1 (4) vs Juan Manuel Marquez 63-7-1 (34)

Marquez is a great fighter, but he drew the shortest possible straw here. And while he kept Willie on his bike with sharp counters in the third and seventh rounds, Pep stuck to the obvious game plan and used his speed of hand and foot to carve out an impressive, if not crowd pleasing UD. 119-109 x2 & 116-114

Featherweight 6th Round- part 4 of 4

Tony Canzoneri 63-5-3 (19) vs Kid Chocolate 43-2-2 (17)

Kid set the tone in this highly anticipated fight by taking the first three rounds with an uncharacteristically aggressive approach. Tony rebounded to take the fourth and fifth with speedy combinations but Chocolate took the play right back when he hurt Canzo in round six with a hard hook. While the rounds were competitive, The Cuban never relinquished control and took a surprisingly wide UD. 118-110, 117-111 & 116-112

Baby Arizmendi 23-0-1 (5) vs Freddie Miller 23-0-2 (6)

After a tight opening round Miller dominated the second with hard right hands. The Mexican stormed back in round three with speedy combinations. The next five rounds were fought on even terms with similar styles cancelling each other out. Then Freddie took the ninth and tenth behind some well timed hooks and he floored baby for a brief two count in round eleven with a combo. Arizmendi out-worked Miller in the final round but the knockdown was enough to push Miller forward via UD, 115-113 & 114-113 x2

Luisito Espinosa 28-11-8 (7) vs Bobby Chacon 39-8 (31)

As solid a fighter as Espinos is, he seems out of place this deep in the tournament and Chacon made sure that was short lived with a dominant performance. The schoolboy jumped on him out of the gates, floored him in the fifth with a right hand and forced the TKO with a barrage of shots in round seven.

Jem Driscoll 41-5-2 (11) vs Alexis Arguello 85-7-1 (67)

In another toss up fight on paper, Driscoll turned it into a showcase. Jem drilled Arguello with brutal combinations from the opening bell while using his fancy footwork and defense to offset the high octane offense that was in the opposite corner. Alexis stemmed the tide in the sixth when he hurt Jem with a nasty combo and pounded him along the ropes for the last forty-five seconds. But it was a fleeting rally and Driscoll went right back to business in dominant fashion until the ref stopped in after seventeen unanswered shots rained down on Alexis in the corner during round eight.

Jr Lightweight 4th Round- Part 1 of 4

Manny Pacquiao 112-5-1 (100) vs Cornelius Boza-Edwards 35-11 (22)

Edwards was able to hang with Manny over the first four rounds, landing hard hooks and crosses while Pacquiao fired of blinding left hand leads and hooks to the body. Boza's eyes began to swell pretty badly from the third round on and the pressure of Manny turned it into a one sided bout. A left hand floored Edwards in round seven and he took a massive amount of punishment before the fight was stopped in the final round.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. 86-3-4 (45) vs Samuel Serrano 18-2-3 (5)

In a terrible style match up for Sammy Floyd played the role of aggressor and broke down Serrano to the body before flooring him twice and forcing the ref to step in during round six.

Sandy Saddler 46-1 (42) vs John John Molina 20-3-1 (15)

They traded on the inside in the opening round and Molina may have stolen the close round late with two hard uppercuts. A wicked hook dropped Saddler for a three count two minutes into round two and Molina followed up with some excellent body work and drilled Sandy with another hook just before the bell. Saddler came back in the third with some nasty inside fighting and he tagged John John several times with vicious right hands on the way in.

Round four was once again contested in a phone both and Saddler hurt Molina with a short hook, moments later Molina connected with a scorching uppercut that opened a nasty gash under Sandy's left eye. They upped the already fast pace in round five when the trades became more vicious and one sequence saw Saddler rip off 4 body shots and an uppercut only to have Molina immediately fire back with three brutal hooks that all landed flush in a violent and even round (15-15). Sandy stunned John early in the sixth with a nasty hook and he pummeled Molina along the ropes for nearly a minute until a counter hook from molina buckled his legs and two right hands drove sandy across the ring, John John spent the final forty seconds teeing off on Saddler in another brutal round (17-19).

Molina came out blazing in round seven and Sandy met him head on for a furious thirty second trade until an Uppercut sent Molina's mouthpiece flying and Saddler took him to task with measured violence as he hammered the body and picked his spots for uppercuts and hooks to the head. A devastating right hand busted open Molina's nose late in the dominant saddler round. Round eight was more of the same with saddler pushing John to the ropes and beating him to the head and body with both hands while Molina's eyes began to swell from the punishment and a potentially broken nose.

A desperate Molina came out blazing in the ninth and they hammered each other in a wicked trade that had the crowd on its feet. John John staggered Sandy with a short right and moments later he snapped his head straight back with a brutal uppercut. Sandy fought back with a hard hook but Molina connected with two more right hands before the bell. John John ripped off a hook to the body early in the tenth and then he dipped into a devastating hook from Saddler that staggered him into the corner. Sandy opened up with both hands and unleashed almost twenty unanswered shots before Molina slumped into the referee's arms.

Erik Morales 64-6 (40) vs Rocky Lockridge 42-5 (35)

An expected fast pace materialized when Lockridge bulled Morales to the ropes and they traded heavily fore the entire round with Rocky banging to the body and Morales firing back with right hands and uppercuts in a tremendous opening stanza. El Terrible stayed in the center of the ring and used his jab and straight rights to the body and head to out-box Lockridge over the next three rounds while the bout remained at an extremely fast pace.

Midway through round five Morales fired a jab to the body and was clobbered with a flush full force right hand that put him down. Smiling Morales jumped up at two and immediately went after Lockridge with a two fisted assault that drove Rocky to the ropes. Lockridge battled off with two more right hands and a hook before Morales fired a straight right to the body and a vicious left uppercut before eating another massive right hand at the bell.

Somehow round six was even more violent and frenzied than the previous round, they went nose to nose for the opening minute, pulverizing each other with savage body shots and uppercuts in close. Morales was stunned by a hard right hand and Lockridge unleashed nine or ten unanswered shots while Erik covered along the ropes. Then El Terrible shot off the ropes like he was out of a cannon and pounded Lockridge with a barrage of shots to the head and body before Rocky answered with a haymaker right hand and Morales countered with a 3 punch combination to end another epic round (21-20).

Round seven was yet another barbaric round with both guys landing almost at will and Morales possibly garnering a slight edge with a nasty four punch combo in the final ten seconds as Rocky's eyes began to swell. Erik rocked him early in round eight with a short hook and went to work on Lockridge along the ropes until Rocky stepped to the side and dropped a right hand flush on Morales chin that drove the Mexican legend into the corner. Rocky slammed five hard shots to the body and an overhand right to the head. Then Morales launched a counter attack that saw them both land several bombs over the final half minute of another insane round.

They both got a needed rest in round nine, but Morales used his jab and some well timed right hands to take the round. Rocky got his second wind and Erik had a drop off as lockridge was able to outwork him, even though Morales continued to counter beautifully, along the ropes for much of the tenth and eleventh rounds. They touched gloves and the crowd arose to open the final round and Erik Morales responded to chants of M-E-X-I-C-O with a brutal tirade that drove Rocky into the corner and Morales pounded him with a variety of shots to the head and body, punctuated by a picture perfect left hook flush on the chin. In danger of being overwhelmed Lockridge scored with a winging right hand that buckled Erik's legs and changed the momentum. Rocky ripped off several hard body shots, but Morales countered with an uppercut to the body and two left uppercuts to the head that exploded Rocky's nose. Morales closed in style with a furious flurry of blows. This brawl had many close rounds but Lockridge emerged with the SD, 115-113, 113-115 & 115-114 to pull off the near impossible and beat Barrera & Morales in back to back, albeit controversial, fights.

Jr Lightweight 4th Round- Part 2 of 4

Alexis Arguello 85-8-1 (67) vs Jorge barrios 13-9-2 (8)

As tough as the aggressive barrios is, this was target practice from the jump as Arguello dissected him with precision jabs and combinations before dropping Jorge in the seventh with a short right hand and forcing the stoppage with a follow up barrage of shots.

Julio Cesar Chavez 63-3 (56) vs Antonio Cermeno 32-13-2 (17)

Another high seed escaped without incident as Chavez broke down Cermeno efficiently and put a horrible beating on him in the fourth round (30-0) and continued to dominate until the fight was stopped in round six.

Jose Luis Castillo 99-14-3 (74) vs Rolando Navarette 19-2-1 (12)

The usually slow starting Castillo opened up quickly and he dropped Navarette a minute in with a vicious hook to the body and he spent the final two minutes teeing off on the wobbly Filipino but Rolando managed to survive the round. Navarette tagged castillo with a short hook early in round two and surprisingly turned the tide. The third and fourth were all Navarette as he continued to throw punch after punch and brushed off Castillo's return fire with disdain and in round four he opened up a bad cut over Jose's left eye and a minor one under his right.

During a hotly contested round five Castillo again hurt Navarette to the body. This time he didn't bounce back so quickly and Castillo dominated the next four rounds including a knockdown in round eight from a wicked hook. Rolando came back a bit down the stretch but not enough to prevent Jose from taking the UD, 116-110 & 115-111 x2

Tyrone Everett 20-1-1 (3) vs Johnny Dundee 33-8-4 (5)

Everett had huge rounds in the first and third where he peppered Dundee with rapid fire combinations as his speed advantage was overwhelming. Dundee slowly worked his way into the fight and the rounds were very close, if not thrilling. Johnny had a huge round in the ninth, scoring repeatedly with lead right hands. Everything else was tight with the exception of the final round when Ty the Fly hurt Dundee with a hard left with a minute remaining and landed several hard combinations to close the fight. Everett was lifted onto the shoulders of his corner only to suffer the disappointment of the MD going Dundee's way, 115-115 & 116-114 x2. You can't call it a robbery with so many close rounds, but the majority thought Everett deserved to advance.

Jr Lightweight 4th Round- Part 3 of 4

Hector Camacho 53-13-2 (14) vs Genaro Hernandez 19-4 (7)

After two sharp opening rounds from Hector, Chicanito opened a bad gash over Camacho's right eye with a stiff jab and scored with several hard right hands during a big third round. Hernandez controlled the third as well to pull even. Then Macho upped his pace, dropped Hernandez in the seventh with a 3 punch combo and boxed brilliantly down the stretch to take the UD, 118-110, 118-111 & 117-110

Kid Chocolate 44-2-2 (17) vs Azumah Nelson 41-6 (31)

Rematch: Nelson KO9

The Professor came out blazing and after a big opening round he dropped the Cuban with a wild right hand midway through the second, his follow up assault had Chocolate on the ropes in a defensive posture for the remaining of the round. Azumah continued to press the pace, and while Chocolate countered well, he was on the wrong end of the next three rounds. Kid connected with some nice combos during a better sixth as he began to better time the awkward aggression of Nelson.

Chocolate poured it on in rounds seven and eight, peppering Azumah with sharp one-twos and scoring well with both hands to the body. Nelson stunned him with a chopping right in round nine but Chocolate finished the round scoring well off of the ropes. the Cuban boxed beautifully in the next two rounds, keeping Nelson on the end of his jab and deftly slipping shots and countering underneath with hooks and uppercuts. The final round started slowly, until two minutes in Nelson connected with a winging overhand right that dropped Chocolate for a two count. He survived the round without further damage, but if there was any doubt that took it away and Azumah advanced with an impressive UD. 116-111 x2 & 115-111

Bobby Chacon 40-8 (32) vs Robert Guerrero 38-5-4 (11)

Schoolboy exploded out of his corner and immediately staggered Robert with a big straight right hand. Guerrero tried to gain his bearings but Bobby continued to score with the right and a murderous one dropped him for a seven count. Chacon swarmed his dazed foe and a barrage of shots along the ropes forced the ref's hand and caused the stoppage.

Joel Casamayor 44-1-1 (19) vs Alfredo Escalera 20-2 (11)

These two showed a lot of respect for each other and it led to a surprisingly docile contest. Casamayor was able to score with his left hand and do some nice work inside to take a disappointing, but concise MD, 118-111, 117-111 & whatever this dude was watching 114-114

Jr Lightweight 4th Round- Part 4 of 4

Tony Lopez 21-1 (13) vs Tod Morgan 15-5-2 (4)

Rematch: Morgan UD10

The Tiger put on a surprisingly dominant performance, repeatedly rocking Morgan with crushing right hands and dropping him in the third with a cross and again in the sixth with an uppercut before forcing the stoppage later in round six with a flurry of blows along the ropes.

Ben Villaflor 21-1 (15) vs Arturo Gatti 60-24-3 (37)

Villaflor used his speed to dominate the first four rounds, pasting Gatti with nasty combinations and opening up a nasty cut over his left eye. Arturo landed a vicious hook with a minute left in round five that had Villaflor holding on as Gatti ripped hooks to the body and head. Ben came back in round six with nice movement and combinations while Gatti pursued him in vain.

Arturo got inside in the seventh and staggered Villaflor late with a well timed uppercut. Still feeling the affects as round eight started, Villaflor was tagged with a huge right hand and Arturo unleashed a three punch combo that put the Filipino fighter down for a five count. gatti threw caution to the wind and unloaded shot after shot until a devastating hook smashed into Villaflor's chin and put him flat on his back. Villaflor barely scraped himself up at nine and managed to take several more shots without going down.

Villaflor showed tremendous resolve as he tore into Gatti in round nine and pummeled him with both hands in a ridiculously dominant round. Arturo, with blood flowing down his face, stunned Villaflor in the ninth with a nasty hook to the body. After using his legs to stay away, Ben planted his feet and they traded heavily over the final minute of a thrilling stanza. Villaflor kept away in the final two rounds and kept the action at a minimum, it drew boos from the crowd, but enabled him to escape with the SD, 115-110, 112-113 & 114-111

Gabriel Elorde 38-6-4 (12) vs Frankie Baltazar 15-5-3 (7)

After Elorde took the first two rounds with hard left hands and hooks to the body Frankie came back in the third and fourth with a bruising inside attack. Early in round five Baltazar floored Elorde with a crushing uppercut and proceeded to hammer him all over the ring and the referee was looking closely over the final twenty seconds of the round. Baltazar stormed out of his corner for round six and he walked into a straight left hand that turned his legs to jelly, Elorde fired off a sustained flurry and a left hand dumped Frankie for a five count. Flash continued his attack and floored him again with an uppercut just before the bell. From there it was all Elorde and he used his speed to earn the tougher than expected UD, 114-110, 114-111 & 113-111

Diego Corrales 39-6-1 (24) vs Juan Manuel Marquez 63-8-1 (34)

Rematch: Marquez TKO7

Chico was hoping for a rematch after a disappointing cuts loss in the prelims and he opened aggressively, clipping JMM with hard hooks and uppercuts during a dominant opening round. Marquez held his ground early in the second and they traded bimbs until Corrales connected with a murderous uppercut that put Juan on the deck for an eight count. Diego battered him over the remainder of the round and opened a cut over Marquez right eye with a searing hook just before the bell. The pace was more measured in the next two rounds as Marquez began to score with heavy counter lefts and rights that kept Chico at bay and got the Mexican back into the fight.

Round five was violent, as the two combatants went nose to nose on the inside with Marquez having the edge with his short and concise counters. Corrales threw everyone for a loop in the sixth as he stayed on the outside and used his jab to keep JMM at bay. That went out the window in round seven when Marquez staggered Corrales with a dazzling 3 punch combo to set off a violent exchange of shots that ended with a snapping hook putting Marquez down again for a five count. Corrales unleashed with both hands looking for the kill but he walked into an uppercut with under ten seconds left that had him on unsteady legs.

Marquez took advantage of a still wobbly Corrales in round eight as he took him to the woodshed with an incredible display of combination punching. With both of his eyes swelling, Chico went ballistic to open the ninth and he hurt Marquez with a nasty hook that reopened Marquez cut and drove him to the ropes. Marquez fired back off the ropes with an incredible four punch combo that hurt Corrales but Diego immediately launched back a counter assault and a wicked Uppercut rocked Juan. they traded furiously over the final minute as the crowd roared its approval and a punishing hook to the body, double hook to the head combo from Corrales had marquez in trouble yet again as the bell tolled.

Chico hooked off of his jab early in round ten and Marquez face was instantly a mask of blood, JMM dug in and landed a three punch combo to the body that Corrales answered with a searing uppercut that snapped back Marquez head and sprayed blood through the air. They engaged in a furious trade of power shots until a short hook drove Chcio across the ring, Marquez ran after him and connected with a precise right hand that dumped Corrales for a five count. Diego landed a hard hook when they resumed and Marquez responded with an insane five punch combo to the head and body that culminated with a murderous uppercut that put Corrales down again for a nine count. An exhausted Corrales unleashed a wild hook that Marquez ducked and came back with a picture perfect right hand that rolled back Chico's eyes as the referee stepped in. As Marquez team hoisted the bloody gladiator in the air, you knew his mind was on the sweet sixteen match up with Manny Pacquiao.

Lightweight 6th Round- Part 1 of 4

Floyd Mayweather 87-3-4 (46) vs Andy Ganigan 22-2 (19)

The Hawaii native threw off Floyd with his herky-jerky southpaw style in the first two rounds and he was able to back PBF up and score with some heavy left hands. In round three a crushing left staggered Floyd and Ganigan opened up with both hands until a brutal uppercut crashed into Mayweather's chin and dropped him hard. He barely beat the count and survived to hear the bell. Then in the fourth, Floyd showed great recuperative powers and adaptability as he started roughing Andy up on the inside and taking the initiative with one lead right hand after another. Ganigan's promising start was wiped away by nine masterful Mayweather rounds and he took the wide UD despite nearly being knocked out, 116-111 x3

Hank Armstrong 69-3-1 (61) vs Ken Buchanan 21-0-3 (8)

Henry was his usual self, plowing into Buchanan with abandon and firing off shot after shot from the opening bell. Kenny countered well over the first four rounds and they were fought at an even clip. Starting in round five, it was all Armstrong as Buchanan couldn't match his pace and Kenny spent the rest of the night with his back to the ropes eating leather. A right hand dropped Buchanan in the tenth and a barrage of shots ended Kenny's night in the twelfth.

Manny Pacquiao 113-5-1 (101) vs Beau Jack 21-1-2 (12)

Manny jumped on Jack early, scoring with hard left hands and some short hooks, one of which opened a bad cut over Jack's already swelling left eye late in round three. Beau responded with a lot of pressure during an exciting fourth that saw Battling land several hard right hands and take some nasty uppercuts from pacquiao. After a close fifth they went at it in the sixth, pac rocked him twice with huge lefts and Jack worked hard to the body on the inside before being stunned by a vicious Pacquiao uppercut before the bell. By the ninth Manny had a huge lead, but he slowed down enough for Jack to control much of the final four rounds on the inside with the exception of a big round eleven when Manny once again tagged him with an uppercut. The strong close made it closer, but Pacquiao took the deserving UD, 116-112 x3

Joel Casamayor 45-1-1 (19) vs Esteban Dejesus 41-5-1 (28)

These two styles didn't mesh to produce the most action packed bout, but it was very tight and skillfully contested. Joel had big fi rounds in the fifth and sixth where he scored liberally with his left hand and created some swelling on the Puerto Rican's right eye. DeJesus hurt Casamayor in the ninth with a double hook and followed up with some wicked body work. But neither man was ever able to truly take control and with the majority of the rounds being a virtual stalemate, the SD was no surprise. Dejesus managed to advance by the skin of his teeth, 115-113 x2 & 111-117

Using the auto-scheduler for the prelims gives guys some soft touches. But it's still pretty sick.

Lightweight 6th Round- Part 2 of 4

Benny Leonard 23-0-1 (6) vs Lou Ambers 20-2-2 (2)

Rematch: Leonard UD12

This match up proved to be a stylistic nightmare for Ambers during the prelims and absolutely nothing changed, Benny pasted Lou from range from the opening bell and turned his right eye into a bloody, swollen mess by the eighth round en route to an absolutely dominant UD, 119-110, 118-111 & 118-112

Roberto Duran 78-14-2 (51) vs Sam Langford 88-5-4 (69)

The crowd was on pins and needles at the opening bell and these two didn't disappoint as they went nose to nose for the entire three minutes with a late barrage from Langford garnering him the slight edge. An early exchange in round two saw a short right hand buckle Sam's legs and Roberto spent the majority of the round battering Langford to the head and body with vicious combinations. After a slow round three, Langford landed several searing uppercuts to gain the edge in a heated fourth round.

The fifth was all Langford, bulldozing Duran backwards and connecting with winging blows to the body with both hands and some murderous uppercuts to the head that snapped Duran's head straight back. The sixth was fought at a slower pace, but once again Langford was the more aggressive and active fighter. In round seven Duran turned the tide with a slew of vicious right hands that brought on some major swelling on Sam's left eye. Manos de Piedra lived up to his nickname during the next six minutes, pummeling Langford to the point that his right eye was also badly swollen and a right hand busted open Sam's already closing left eye. There was no turning back the tide for Langford and Duran beat on him down the stretch to take the well earned UD, 116-112 x3

Julio Cesar Chavez 67-3 (57) vs Packey McFarland 35-9-3 (17)

JCC took the first three rounds to the majority of observers with a concise body attack while McFarland got his bearings about him. Packey rebounded to potentially edge the next two stanza's as he got his hook to the body and uppercuts working as they continued to fight almost exclusively on the inside. Round six was a huge one for Packey as he landed with several clean right hands on the chin while negating Julio's advances.

Chavez came back in the seventh with a renewed attack downstairs and the crowd gasped when he ripped two hooks to the body and a left uppercut/hook to the head for a dazzling 4 punch combo. McFarland overwhelmed Chavez in the eighth with a series of well timed flurries that pushed Julio back to the ropes. The next two rounds were fought at a virtual stalemate, both guys scored heavily while the crowd reacted to every blow. McFarland was too much in the eleventh and twelfth, blasting Julio with punishing right hands and uppercuts to the head while Chavez countered with hooks but found himself out-muscled on the inside and the split decision, to many's surprise, went the way of McFarland. 115-114 x2 & 113-115

Edwin Valero 40-4-1 (33) vs Sammy Fuller 36-7-4 (8)

Valero came out rifling bombs and looking for the kill, but a minute into the opening round a counter hook from Fuller put valero down for a five count. Sammy pasted him with clean combos for the remainder of the round. Fuller used his legs and defensive skill to hold Edwin down over the next few rounds while Edwin occasionally scored with something big. The pressure began to get to Sammy in the seventh and Valero blasted him with lefts and rights along the ropes that created some swelling over his right eye. Down the stretch it was all Valero as Fuller went into survival mode and Edwin advanced to the sweet 16 with a UD, 115-111 & 115-112 x2

That is a fantastic matchup, Duran vs Langford. Sometimes I wish I had started Sammy out in one of the lower weight classes in TGPiS, to give him a chance to do something extraordinary in regards to winning world titles. Hopefully he can claim the 175, 200, 200+ treble, though.

Big upset with Chavez losing, also.

Lightweight 6th Round- Part 3 of 4

Aaron Pryor 45-0-2 (39) vs Stevie Johnston 22-2 (11)

Johnston was able to meet the Hawk's expected aggression in the opening round with some short counters to the body and head in an even opening stanza. Aaron caught Stevie with a right halfway through the second and he pummeled Johnston along the ropes for the next eighty seconds as an overwhelmed Johnston relied on his guile to survive the round but he did come away with some bad swelling on his left eye. Lil but Bad showed his grit by meeting Pryor in the center of the ring for the third and getting the best of an early trade before dishing out a series of jabs and left hands that had his foe visibly frustrated at the bell.

Round four was Johnston at his very best, ducking under the lunging blows of the Hawk and peppering him with short two and three punch combinations in a brilliant round of Boxing for the huge underdog. Pryor exploded out for round five and unloaded a barrage of shots that Johnston defended well until an uppercut from an awkward angle buckled his legs. Pryor upped his intensity and landed several telling blows while Stevie wisely held on. Aaron once again was super aggressive in round six while Johnston used his jab to gain a little distance, late in the round Pryor scored with a big right hand that drove Johnston into the ropes and then Aaron ran into a beautiful counter hook that put him down for a two count just before the bell.

Stevie carried his momentum into the seventh and his stiff jab drew some swelling on Aaron's left eye. Pryor landed a huge right hand with thirty seconds left, but Johnston matched him in a furious exchange to end the round. Round eight was a shocking site as a seemingly demoralized Pryor followed Johnston around the ring like a puppy and ate jabs and straight left hands for his troubles. Stevie again controlled the ring for the majority of the ninth and that jab has Aaron's eye nearly closed, but Pryor connected with an uppercut from the outside and a vicious barrage to the body and head in the final twenty-seconds to potentially steal the round.

The Hawk stormed out for round ten with a purpose and he promptly blasted Johnston into the corner with a lunging right hand. Johnston fought his way out with a three punch combo but quickly found his back against the ropes for much of the round as Pryor unleashed shot after shot with renewed vigor(hmmm). Johnston's left eye is in gruesome shape entering round eleven and he could use that vision as Aaron fires off right hands like jabs and snapped back Johnston's head with a massive uppercut just before the bell. They touched gloves for the final bell and Pryor immediately jumped Stevie and forced him to the ropes where a right hand buckled his legs with thirty seconds left and Pryor went for broke scoring with a vicious hook and two brutal right hands that forced Johnston to hang on for the final bell. Two of the judges gave Stevie a massive upset via MD, 115-111, 114-112 & 113-113

Diego Corrales 39-7-1 (24) vs Ismael Laguna 21-2-1 (3)

Laguna delivered a master class in Boxing over the first six minutes behind a stiff jab that had some quick swelling developing on Chico's right eye. Corrales connected with a snappy hook and an uppercut during the third that got the attention of the iron jawed Laguna. Ismael came back with a combination before Diego hurt him again with a hook before the bell. Corrales came out hard in the fourth and ripped a hook to the body that Laguna countered with a picture perfect hook flush on the chin that put Corrales flat on his back. Chico barely beat the count and Laguna swarmed him with a two fisted barrage that drove him into the corner and while Diego was firing back ineffectively, the referee appeared to step in prematurely and Corrales and Goosen were livid.

Tony Canzoneri 63-6-3 (19) vs Pernell Whitaker 67-2-2 (16)

Canzoneri took the opening round with a couple well placed combos while they felt each other out. The second was tighter and a straight left hand opened a horrible cut over Tony's right eye. They traded the next four rounds as both men struggled to land with anything significant before Tony scored well with his hook to take round seven. Round eight saw Sweet Pea connect with two hard left hands that exploded Canzoneri's eye like an oil well and the fight was immediately stopped.

Joe Gans 24-0 (16) vs Oscar DelaHoya 83-7-4 (48)

Oscar engaged Joe early and they traded heavy artillery with a crushing hook opening a nasty cut over Gans right eye. The Old Master came back in the second behind his jab and some deft footwork to box circles around the Golden Boy. Oscar landed a bevy of brutal hooks in the third and fourth rounds while the crowd roared its approval.

Early in round five, Gans slipped a hook and countered with a flush right hand that put Oscar down for a four count. Gans took him to the woodshed over the remainder of the round with dazzling combinations that had the referee looking closely in the closing seconds. Oscar toughed it out, but the adjustment form Joe to take away the hook made the rest of the fight a one sided affair. DelaHoya was floored again by a right hand in round eleven, and while he managed to absorb a pile of punishment, the UD for Gans was a foregone conclusion. 117-107, 117-108 & 116-109

Lightweight 6th Round- Part 4 of 4

Alexis Arguello 86-6-1 (68) vs Joe Brown 21-2-1 (10)

Old Bones had some success in the first two rounds with his jab and some movement while Areguello struggled to get going. Just before the bell in round two Alexis connected with a nasty hook that dropped Brown for a brief two count. Arguello opened up with his precision combos in the third and Joe finished the dominant round with severe swelling on his right eye. A right hand busted open Brown's left eye in the sixth and Alexis never looked back, taking a surprisingly lopsided UD, 118-109 x3

Carlo Orlandi 18-6 (3) vs Barney Ross 64-4-3 (20)

The Pride of the Ghetto was dominant over the first five rounds, swelling up Orlandi's left eye with lead right hands and defending admirably. Carlo bounced back in rounds six through eight with a smothering style that frustrated Barney while orlandi was able to score with some good body work. Ross regained the proper distance in round nine and he peppered the Italian with combinations until a short right hand floored Orlandi for a six count early in the eleventh, a barrage of punches ensued until an uppercut slammed into Carlo's chin and he pitched forward before falling on his face for the ten count.

Juan Manuel Marquez 64-8-1 (35) vs Ike Williams 41-6-1 (29)

The first two rounds set the tone as Ike came forward with his heavy jab and some strong right hands behind it while Marquez countered beautifully to the head and body with combinations. A big right hand stunned JMM early in round three and Ike jumped on him and connected with two more rights and a vicious left before Marquez snapped his head straight back with an uppercut and ripped two hooks to the body. They continued to trade evenly until a Williams hook buckled Marquez legs just before the bell.

The fourth was an instant replay early with both guys landing heavily until Williams uncorked a hook that put Juan down for a five count. Marquez valiantly returned fire but Ike blasted him with rights and lefts for the majority of the round. Juan tagged Ike with a brilliant three punch combo and then jarred him with a violent uppercut in round five for his best round to date. The next three rounds were high octane, with Williams leading and Marquez countering with near equal efficiency, Juan staggered Ike in the sixth and eighth with right hands to gain the edge in those rounds.

Ike showed his versatility by getting on his toes in the ninth and spearing Marquez with precise jabs while Juan was ineffective trying to force the pace. The next two rounds Marquez was able to counter some jabs with right hands and he did good work in the sporadic moments he was able to get Williams to the ropes. Ike was again on his back foot in the final round and not much happened until Williams landed two big right hands in the closing moments of the bout. Williams did enough to set up a fight with Armstrong in round seven and take the MD, 116-112 x2 & 114-114

Carlos Ortiz 41-5-1 (14) vs Jose Luis Castillo 100-14-3 (74)

Rematch: Ortiz MD12(nerd 140 tourney)

After their memorable Jr Welter clash there were no secrets and they wasted no time getting down to business. Castillo forged inside past the jab of Ortiz and landed several clean body shots to take the opening round. They went nose to nose in rounds two & three with Ortiz countering Jose's body shots with concise uppercuts to the head. The fourth was explosive with Castillo taking the early advantage with several hard hooks to the body and head before Ortiz roared back with dazzling 3 and 4 punch combinations in the final minute of the round.

JLC hurt Carlos with a hook to the liver a minute into the fifth and he spent the final two minutes drilling the PR legend with punishing combos to the body and head. Ortiz gained some distance with some adjustments to his footwork and he peppered Castillo from range over the next three rounds, dealing out particular damage in a dominant round seven when he connected with one lead right after another.

Castillo got back into the flow in the ninth and he battled Ortiz on even terms as they traded inside. Their inside skills were again on display in the tenth, but Jose upped his activity and pounded Carlos late with a double hook to the body/uppercut and hook to the head combo that drew gasps from the crowd. Down the stretch JLC continued to apply tremendous pressure and might have had an edge as they traded blow for blow over the final six minutes. In the end, Ortiz was on the wrong side of the SD and Castillo had revenge and a date with Floyd mayweather, 117-112, 113-116 & 116-113

Jr Welterweight 5th round- Part 1 of 4

Aaron Pryor 45-1-2 (39) vs Bruno Arcari 22-1 (12)

The Hawk got off to his typical fast start by swarming the Italian and scoring with chopping right hands and uppercuts from both sides in a dominant opening round. Bruno got his feet under him and started scoring with sharp shooting counters while frustrating Pryor with some subtle foot movement and defense in the second. Pryor landed a 3 punch combo early in the third that sliced open a foul gash under Arcari's right eye, but Bruno responded with a counter attack to the head and body in a very tight round.

Arcari introduced a punishing stick in the fourth and the repeated jabs have Hawks right eye swelling badly by the end of the fourth. They traded heavily on even terms to open round five and then Arcari started drilling Pryor with lead right hands over the final minute to continue to build a lead. Early in the sixth Pryor shot a right hand over a jab that rocked Arcari. A barrage of shots pushed Bruno into the ropes and Aaron continued to unload until a sizzling uppercut crashed into Arcari's jaw and put him down on his face for the obligatory ten count.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. 88-3-4 (46) vs Roger Mayweather 39-6-2 (17)

Roger may have taught his nephew too well, because Floyd put a hiding on Uncle Roger from the opening bell behind a consistent body attack and sterling defense. After winning every round, Floyd turned out Roger's lights with a crushing check hook in round ten after slipping a right hand.

Pernell Whitaker 68-2-2 (17) vs Pinky Mitchell 19-3-1 (6)

These styles didn't mesh to produce fireworks, but Whitaker did use a consistent jab and body attack to control the ring and he rocked Mitchell in round eleven with a short hook and 4 follow up left hands. The look of dismay on Pea's face when he heard.."We Have A Split Decision.." cannot be described. Thankfully, two of the judges watched the fight and Pernell advanced, 118-110, 118-111 & 113-115

Frankie Randall 38-7-1 (27) vs Leonard Dorin 13-10 (3)

Frankie looked like a surgeon in the first two rounds, thwarting the Romanians advances with punishing combinations highlighted by some massive right hands. Dorin was able to work inside during the third and fourth and score with short shots to the head and body while applying relentless pressure.

The action really heated up in the fifth, Dorin opened a cut under Randall's left eye with an uppercut and they traded mightily from close range with Leonard being more active while Randall scored with the heavier shots. The sixth was even more ferocious, Leonard tagged his foe with a barrage of shots that had Randall on the ropes where he took at least ten unanswered blows before a beautiful side step/uppercut maneuver sent Dorin's mouthpiece flying and he later buckled his legs with a booming right hand.

Dorin refused to stop coming forward and his pace and pressure had Randall looking for a second wind at the end of another hotly contested round in the eighth. Unfortunately for Frankie, all he found was Dorin in his face and after a sustained body attack in round nine a short left hook to the temple put Randall down for a five count and from that point it was all Dorin as he breezed down the stretch for the upset UD, 117-110, 116-111 & 115-112
