US Heavyweight Tournament

I started something like this a year ago, and I messed it up. I wasn't careful with names, etc. and had numerous mistakes.

So one more time... (I wasn't going to post this time, but after the Illinois result I decided I had too.) I won't be getting into the fight in rounds very much, but will write up a summary and the highlights of the semi and final round as this goes.

I also found a handy resource for setting up the brackets at
www.PrintYourBrackets.com seeding the fighters is much easier.

The tournament is being fought state by state. I used the Hometown to determine which state the fighter would participate in. Fighters must fight under the American flag, sorry Charlie (Weinart). Once the champions of the fifty states are determined then we move on to the 50 state Tournament of Champions.

The first state, Alaska was easy, Cody Koch was the only HW from that state. Next up is Alabama.

The A states

Alabama has 10 heavyweights with Jefferson (the South Is Just Waiting for Supplies) Davis the highest rated boxer at a 5. He had an easy route to state champion defeating Oscar Pharo and Lem Franklin.
In Arkansas the favorite was JD Chapman. Chapman had a first round bye and went on to defeat Bobby Crabtree with a 2nd round KO and then outlasted Terry Smith in the final for the Razorback State. Chapman was the real life Arkansas State Champ and also held at one time held the WBC Latino HW title, NABC and IBF/USBA South Regional titles

Arizona’s top fighters all made it through the quarter finals. Of note, Mark Gastineau lost his fight-in to Dino Homey, after which Tyson KO’d him at the 39 second mark of the first round.

Mike Tyson and Zora Foley squared off in the semi round. Folley won the first 3 rounds, but took a pounding in the process of going toe to toe with Iron Mike. Folley landed a big hook and started Tyson’s eye to swell in the second, Foley cut Tyson in the 10th. Both fighters danced around each other catching their breath for the final, and Tyson finally landed a haymaker putting Folley on the canvas, but he made it back up and a few seconds later the bell sounded ending the battle.

Tyson 114-113, 115-112, 116-111, Tyson win by UD.

Tommy Morrison and John Henry Lewis were next. The fight was scored even at the time of the stoppage, both fighter’s having been cut , with Morrison’s cut the worse, and John Henry Lewis advanced to take on Tyson for the state championship.

Tyson was off to another slow start, losing the first two rounds to Lewis, then a very lackluster round for the third. The match went back and forth until Lewis was cut in the 9th and Tyson won the title by TKO in the ninth.

I absolutely love the concept! It'll be interesting to see how your Heavyweight Tourney ends up compared to the US Heaveyweight Tourney I just finished in my All-Time thread! Keep it going!

Californi Round of 16

I realize now I did not do a good job of seeding these fighters, but I was using the games tournament function. After this I started using the brackets from the site I posted in the first post. I just don't think McVey and Corbett should have met in this round. Oh, well.

Sam McVey v James J. Corbett
This was a real close fight, both fighters swapping rounds. Then in the eighth McVey took control and land some hard shots and started Corbett’s eye swelling. McVey came out in the ninth to finish the fight, Corbett barely landing a punch, McVey breaking his opponents nose, the eye swelling closed and then a huge combination, followed by a hook to the chin and Corbett on the canvas to stay.

Jerry Quarry v Howard Smith
This bout was very similar to the McVey fight, both fighters holding their own. Smith bloodied Quarry’s nose in the ninth. Both fighters were trading punches when “Quarry lands a violent shot under Smith's ribcage and Smith instantly drops down on both knees.’ Quarry retreat to the neutral corner and Paul Field counted out Howard Smith. Quarry KO10.

Turkey Thompson had a unanimous decision over Mike Hunter

Buddy Baer defeats Lance Whitaker in 12 by UD

Al Bray TKO6 as Lee Ramge is badly cut stopping the fight

Eddie Machen defeats Hank Griffin

Max Baer KO’ed Mac Foster in the 11th. Other than the 5th round Baer had won all the rounds in what turned out to be a mismatch.

Ken Norton v James Jefferies
In the seventh Jefferies came out firing all cylinders and knocked Norton down, Norton was up on the count of five, but Jefferies closed pinning Norton in the corner. Referee Earl Morton stepped in and stopped the fight at 2:42 as Jefferies moves on to the quarter finals.

I need to take a course on bout reports from Infinity...

I'll start with your Fight Write Up 101 and then look for the 201 class.

Sam McVey v Jerry Quarry
McVey won the odd numbered rounds and Quarry won the even rounds until the 7th, 10-10.
McVey suffered a cut in the 8th as Quarry dominated the round. McVey came out for the ninth and landed an uppercut that staggered Quarry into the ropes; Quarry never recovered and was tuned into McVey’s punching bag. Quarry did manage to reopen the cut on McVey, but the result was obvious at this point. Quarry was a gamer and held on taking a tremendous beating until the 2:21 mark when Paul Field stepped in a stopped the bout.
Turkey Thompson v Buddy Baer
Thompson had control most of the fight winning 117-111 according to all three judges. No cuts, little swelling and no knockdowns. Thompson advances to the semi-finals.
Al Bray v Eddie Machen
Again, another fight goes the distance with Machen outlasting Bray with the unanimous decision 116-113, 116-112, 116-113
James Jefferies v Max Baer
Jefferies put on a boxing clinic versus Baer. Winning the first four rounds 10-9. Jefferies caught Baer “flush on the jaw” early in the fifth staggering Max, and a shot to the ribs pretty much ended the fight as the referee stepped in to stop the match at 2:40 of the fifth.
It will be Sam McVey v Turkey Thompson and Eddie Machen v James Jefferies next at the Staples Center.

Californis Wrap Up

California Semi Finals
Sam McVey v Turkey Thompson
Both fighters score a knockdown, but the fight goes the distance. McVey wins 9 round on his way to a unanimous decision.

James Jefferies v Eddie Machen
Jefferies and Machen trade punches for rounds one and two, with Jefferies having the upper hand. Jefferies comes on in the third, took a wild swing at Machen and left himself open to a series of counter shots from Machen putting Jefferies on the canvas for a count of 7. Jefferies manages to hanfg on for the remainder of the round.
Jefferies and Machen meet at ring center for the fourth round. Jefferies appears to have recovered from his knockdown and opens up on Machen. Jefferies lands a series of blows leaving Machen with eyes glazed over as the referee steps in to save Machen from serious injury. Jefferies wins by TKO at 2:01 of the fourth.

California Heavyweight Championship
Sam McVey v James Jefferies
The top 2 rated boxers in California meet for the champions ship.
The first round was dominated by McVey, Jefferies appears to have hurt ribs and one eye begins to swell, not good for the first round for Jefferies. McVey lands shot after shot, somehow Jefferies remains on his feet at the end of the round.

Round 2 starts with the Jefferies landing hook to the jaw of McVey, Jefferies, sensing a hurt McVey pushes his attack, only to have McVey land a “wild overhand right” sending Jefferies to the mat at the one minute mark. Jefferies regains his feet at the count of and McVey lands punch after punch, Jefferies covers up and survives the round.

Round three: and through part of the fourth, McVey seems to have the fight well in hand as Jefferies can’t not land a solid shot, things turn around mid fourth and Jefferies stars to hit McVey with some regularly, it appears McVey is running out of steam.

Round 5: Jefferies totally dominates the round and the 6th both seem to be catching their breath with little action.

Round 7: Another round for Jefferies as McVey is slowly being worn down as the fighters trade punches.

Round 8: Both fighters are clutching and throwing the occasional punch, the crowd happy calls for some action. Jefferies lands enough punches to win another round.

Round 9: McVey catches a second wind, and dominates the round, nearly knocking down Jefferies

Round 10: the swelling around Jefferies eye is becoming more of a problem for the fighter, but it is McVey just missing while Jefferies punches land. McVey is warned about holding and hitting, the ringside announcer notes “it is more than hitting” going on.

Round 11: McVey lands a series of shots early, Jefferies gets one in that counts and McVey goes down for a count of five. He then suffers a cut to the left eyebrow, as Jefferies controls the round. “Hide the china because Jeffries is like a bull in there, charging forward with reckless abandon” is the call from the color man at ringside. McVey is hurt, but is saved by the bell.

Round 12, McVey starts it off with a vicious hook to the jaw of his opponent, and rains punches on Jefferies at will. McVey forces him into a corner and it appears the ribs are again causing Jefferies some problem. There was a flurry of punches traded as Jefferies fought his way out of the corner. McVey advances sensing the end is near but Jefferies musters up enough to land a wicked hook that drops McVey for nine, late in the round and he holds on to the finish. The fight goes to the judges.
We go to the ring where Dean Stone is ready with the call...

Ladies and Gentlemen, the judges have tallied their scorecards and here is your decision...

Joe Garcia, United States scores the bout 114 to 111

Rodolfo Hill, Panama scores the bout 116 to 110

Duane Ford, United States scores the bout 115 to 110

And your winner by unanimous decision and the new heavyweight champion of California
James Jeffries!!!

Colorado Part 1

Twelve heavyweights represent Colorado. They include Ron Lyle and Leroy Jones. One of the more interesting is Mexican Pete Everett. http://boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Human:11541

Pete fought in the early 1900’s and was the Colorado State Champ and the Rocky Mountain Region. He has an interesting history, he took eight years off (part of the time in prison) and made a short comeback against Gunboat Smith in 1911 and his net and last fight was against Harry Willis three years later. Everett won his fight in against Mike Arnold.

Quarterfinals
Ron Lyle defeats Fred Russell KO4
Leroy Jones TKO10 over Talmadge Griffis
Jim Flunn over DaVarryl Williamson TKO3
Everett majority decision versus John P. Clow

Semi-Finals
Leroy Jones wins by unanimous decision over Flynn
And then…..
Mexican Pete Everett v Ron Lyle

Lyle v Everett
Pepsi Center, Denver

Lyle seemed to be on his way to an easy victory. Everett was holding his own, but the crowd knew Mexican Pete might not have the tools to form the upset. Lyle did suffer a cut from and accidental head butt in the sixth but the corner was able to stop the bleeding. Everett won a close seventh round and Lyle came back and it appeared the end of the bout winning round eight and nine.
And then came the 10th.

Colorado Final

Leroy Jones the number 2 seed vs. Mexican Pete. I had hope of another upset but Jones had control of the fight winning 9 of the 12 rounds.
116-110, 117-109 and 116-110.

Connecticut, Delaware and DC

As I said in the first post, had no sense I was going to share this tournamet, so I kept no records for these states.

Connectict winner was Gene Tunney defeating Lawerence Clay-Bey for the state title. (19 fighters)

Tony Thompson wins the DC tournament. (9 fighters)
