Featherweights December 1992

1992-12-20
Sydney Stadium, Sydney, Australia

Jeff Fenech - Record: 26-0-0 (16) UD10 Chan-Yong Park - Record: 15-7-2 (2)
The korean Park gave local hero and heavy favourite Jeff Fenech a very tough contest.
Park won the first two rounds outlanded Fenech in both. Fenech appeared in the fight on the third round with his traditional busy style. The highlight of the round was a big body shot that stunned Park. But surprisingly was Park who was in control again on the fourth. Fenech won the fifth round clearly and the sixth in an oustanding way, in this round he stunned Park more than one time and swelled the korean left eye. Fenech won clearly rounds seven and eight, but the referee took a point from him by holding and hitting on the eight round. Park come back to the fight winning the ninth round convincingly. With the point taken out from Fenech the fight seemed to be even entering in the last round. An on the last round Fenech showed why he is a superstar, he punnished Park for two minutes until landed a solid cross and sent him to the canvas , the korean got up and managed to survive the round but this strong finish was enough to Fenech to secure his victory. The scorecards were 95-93 (x3) all for Fenech.

Joan Guzman - Record: 21-2-0 (17) WTKO7 Lorenzo Parra - Record: 22-4-0 (9)
A very competitive fight for four rounds , Guzman won convincingly rounds one and three and Parra won clearly rounds two and four. On the fifth stanza Guzaman hurt Parra several times and started to dominate the fight. On the sixth stanza Guzman dropped Parra twice but Lorenzo survived the round. On the seventh round Guzman floored Parra again with a vicious uppercut, Parra got up again and looked spent, Guzman was merciless and punished Parra for another minute until the referee stopped the fight.

Jorge Barrios - Record: 21-3-1 (11) WTKO9 Nate Campbell - Record: 20-5-1 (12)
Uneven fight, Campbell only won the fourth round of the fight the rest was all for Barrios. The argentine drooped Campbell twice on the fifth round the first with a wild overhand right, the second with a short clean hook. After winning the sixth round easily , Barrios dropped Campbell again on the seventh with a big uppercut. With the same punch Barrios floored Campbell again on the eight round. On the ninth round Barrios was landing punch after punch without answer when the referee sttoped the fight.

Brahim Asloum - Record: 19-4-1 WSD10 Javier Alvarez - Record: 8-6-4 (3)
A very competitive fight with the two fighters trading rounds with no one having the control of the bout. Asloum seemed to win the fight by a little margin but it was an appreciation bout.
The scorecards were 97-94 ,97-95 for Asloum and 97-95 for Alvarez.

WBA Featherweight Undercard

1992-12-20
Azteca, Mexico DF, Mexico

Diego Morales - Record: 20-5-1 (9) WKO3 Rico Ramos - Record: 12-10-3 (1)
After an even first round , Ramos won the second, Morales came strong on the third round and landed a smashing cross that hurt Ramos, after that Morales gave a real beating to Ramos for two minutes until dropping him for good with a clean hook.

Hector Chicagual - Record: 13-6-2 (3) WSD10 Bobby Vanzie - Record: 8-8-3 (1)
A competitive battle between this two journeyman. Chicagual won the first but Vanzie won the second and third rounds. The argentine won convincingly the fourth round but Vanzie had a perfect fifth round in which Chicagual failed to land a single punch. Chicagual recovered winning the sixth and outboxing Vanzie on the seventh. Eight and ninth rounds were actionless even ones and finally Vanzie won the last round. The scorecards were 96-94 (x2) for Chicagual and 97-95 for Vanzie. I think that a draw was the more accurate result.

In-Jin Chi - Record: 21-3-1 (10) WUD10 Juan Cabrera - Record: 14-7-5 (2)
In-Jin Chi was simple to classy for Juan Cabrera. He outboxed the overwhelmed argentine for the majority of the fight. As a highlight Chi had a beautiful fifth round where he stunned and almost dropped the argentine. Cabrera only won clearly the second and the last rounds but one judge was more generous with him. The scorecards were 98-92 (x2) and 96-94.

......Coming up Julio Cesar Chavez-Salvador Sanchez.

Lucian Bute - Record: 20-0-0 (12) WUD10 Gilbert Baptist - Record: 7-9-2

Wbc featherweight title fight undercard

1993-01-24
Municipal Gymnasium, Colon, Panama

Horacio Acavallo - Record: 24-2-0 (6) WUD10 Adonis Rivas - Record: 17-6-4 (2)
In my point of view it was an easy unanimous decision for Horacio Acavallo with the argentine won at least seven or eight rounds of the fight. But two of the judges watched the fight in another way and one of them also had Rivas winning the fight by the seventh round.
The oficial scorecards were 99-92 and 96-94 (x2) all for Acavallo.

IBO CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS
Kid Chocolate - Record: 15-1-0 (3) WUD10 Jorge Elicer Julio - Record: 16-3-0 (10)
Kid Chocolate started the fight strong winning four of the first five rounds, but then Julio tried a rally winning rounds six and seven convincingly. But Kid Chocolate outboxed Julio on the last three stanzas to secure his victory. The scorecards were 97-93 (x2) and 96-94.

IBO CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS
Juanito Rubillar - Record: 16-1-2 (3) WUD10 Agapito Sanchez - Record: 17-2-0 (2)
Rubillar scored a big upset victory over favourite Agapito Sanchez. On a very even contest Sanchez won the first round , the second and the third were even and difficult to rate rounds. Sanchez won the fourth and fifth rounds and with half of the fight disputed he appeared in the way to an easy victory. But after a no action sixth round that the three judges gave to Rubillar for being the aggressor, Rubilar mounted a great comeback winning the last four rounds convincingly to secure his victory. The scorecards were 98-93 96-94 and 97-94 all for Rubillar.

Paul Banke - Record: 12-4-2 (1) DRAW(m)10 Edwin Santana - Record: 14-5-1 (1)
A very even fight I saw four rounds clearly for each boxer and the eight and ninth ones very, very difficult to rate so perhaps a draw is a good result to the fight. Banks was the best on the first six rounds of the fight but then Santana rallied on the bottom half of the bout. The scorecards were 95-95 (x2) and 97-93(¿?) for Santana.

Tom Johnson - Record: 15-4-2 (2) WKO3 Francisco Montiel - Record: 11-5-3
Johnson won the first two rounds, Montiel tried a reaction on the third but Johnson put him to sleep for all the count on the fourth round with a tremendous shot under his ribcage.
