Endurance is definitely the number one issue they all have. Especially Foreman and Liston. They are usually heading towards empty by the 7th and 8th. And thanks for the comment. I appreciate it.

September 2012 Standings - Changes

I have decided that since I have called this a Premier League, and with some ideas I have for successive seasons including relegation, I will no longer be doing the standings updates based on the ranks generated by Title Bout. That information will still be included, but I am going to due three points for a win, one for a draw. For those fighters who have equal points, their position in the standings will be determined by the number of knockouts. I am almost ready to post it, but I have a few kinks to get cleared up first.

September 2012 Standings

Going to try again in a minute. Seems copy and pasting only works well in an original post, and not an edit.

(Even though I switched the monthly standings to a point system, the weekly updates will still note each fighter's rank coming into, and as a result of, that bout)

Louis #1 9-3-0 (7) v. Loughran #14 3-7-2 (1)

Loughran seems to defy the odds in most of his fights, maybe not by winning, but certainly by hanging tough. I am interested to see what he does against Mr. Louis. I would say, all things considered, he held his own. After the 8th, Louis seemed to have a slight edge, which was helped in the 9th when swelling erupted under Loughran’s left eye. Tommy was doing his best, but was honestly being pummeled by Louis. In the 13th, a rarity occurred, and Loughran was knocked down by a thundering combination for a seven count. Going into the 14th, Louis seemingly had an insurmountable lead, but it didn’t matter, as he walloped Loughran so badly, that the ref had to step in at the 2:40 mark: Louis TKO14

Louis obviously keeps his #1 ranking, and Loughran only drops a place to 15th

Marciano #4 9-3-0 (4) v. Frazier #11 3-8-1 (1)

Well, I must admit I didn’t see this one coming. The two made it into the 8th round, with Marciano coming in with a sizable lead. Make no mistake, Frazier was landing a number of enormous blows, but it seemed that every other shot Marciano landed shook those three rows back from ringside. Imagine my surprise when Frazier bulled his way out of his corner at the opening bell in the 8th and launched a scathing attack on Marciano, who seemed quite surprised and also powerless to stop the onslaught. Don’t think I have seen anything like it so far this season: Frazier TKO8

Marciano drops to 6th in the rankings, while Frazier shoots up to 5th

Jackson #11 5-6-0 (2) v. McVey #13 6-6-0 (4)

Looked like a good one coming in, although it seemed Jackson may have over done it a bit in training in the run up to the fight. The bout started evenly, with the two basically trading rounds, and it seemed pretty much deadlocked after the 8th. The only sign either was in a fight was the swelling under Jackson’s left eye that started in the 5th. However, that was soon not to be the case, as a blow from McVey cut Jackson on the right eyelid in the 10th. Certainly not a good location for a cut. The cut was re-opened in the 11th, but the fight continued, until it was once again an issue in the 13th, and there seemed little choice as to what would have to happen: McVey TKO13

Jackson falls to 14th in the rankings, McVey heads up to 9th

Klitschko #7 6-5-1 (1) v. Johnson #10 4-5-3

Klitschko endured a somewhat difficult start to the bout, first having a cut opened inside the left eyebrow, and then seeing swelling under the same eye in the 1st. His luck continued to run badly in the 2nd, when he was deducted a point for a low blow that only the ref seemed to see. Klitschko did have a bit of luck in the 3rd, when he started some rather unpleasant swelling over Johnson’s right eye. In the end though, none of this really mattered. Starting in the 12th, Johnson took control, dominating until the final bell: Johnson UD15

The two switch places in the rankings, Klitschko to 10th, Johnson to 7th

Langford #4 7-4-0 (3) v. Stribling #16 4-7-1 (2)

This one was very nearly over in the 1st, as Stribling sent Langford crashing to his back twice. Then, amazingly, Stribling dropped him twice more in the 2nd. Langford continued to regain his feet though, and the bout continued. Langford certainly knew he would have to fight hard and well to turn the bout in his favor, and he certainly tried hard. However, his fate seemed sealed when he was knocked down a fifth time in the 13th. And, indeed it was: Stribling UD15

Langford drops all the way to 11th, while Stribling moves up to 10th

Ali #3 7-4-1 (4) Tunney #7 7-4-1
A good bout, with the early rounds being a back and forth dog fight. A seemingly innocuous blow from Ali opened a cut above Tunney’s right eye early on in the 7th, with a later hit opening it further. Then, in the 8th, Ali sent Tunney crashing to the canvas with an overwhelming hook to the body. Tunney recovered, but the cut was re opened in the 9th, and in the 10th a devastating hook caused the cut to expand badly enough for the ref to consult the physician, leading to: Ali TKO10

Ali moves to 2nd, Tunney drops to 9th

Tyson #12 6-6-0 (3) v. Jeanette #14 5-7-0 (3)

Well, not much to say about this one. Less than twenty seconds into the first, a wicked hook from Tyson opened a nasty looking cut on Jeanette’s right eyelid. Between rounds, it was closed, but with a cut in that location, who knows what would happen. It didn’t take long to find out, as Tyson reeled off and caught Jeanette flush half way through the second. The cut pretty much exploded, and as Jeanette was taken to the hospital to get it patched up: Tyson TKO2

Tyson moves to 7th, Jeanette drops to 17th

Lewis #19 4-8-0 (3) v. Langford #12 7-5-0 (3)

A well balanced bout, the fighters seemed to literally trade rounds. The only issue I had was the fact that the ref was too involved, deducting a point from Lewis in the 10th, and a point from Langford in the 11th. Langford was knocked down in the 6th, while Lewis was the one who looked to have been in a fight, suffering swelling in the 3rd and a cut in the 14th. As I said, a well balanced fight: MDraw

Lewis stays 19th, Langfrod stays 12th

Jeffries #13 4-6-2 (2) v. Stribling #11 5-7-1 (2)

Well, this one was even as could be. The two rolled through ten rounds pretty much all square, although Jeffries did knock Stribling down for a seven count in the 4th. However, Stribling dusted himself off quickly. Stribling was cautioned numerous times for various infractions, including rabbit punching, low blows and leaning on the neck. I counted at least four warnings through ten. Then, twenty seconds into the 11th, Stribling was disqualified for what was deemed an intentional low blow: Jeffries DQ11

Jeffries up to 8th, Stribling moves to 13th

Lewis #19 4-8-1 (3) v. Ali #2 8-4-1 (5)

I must admit that I was very surprised that the bout reached the half way point and was pretty much too close to call. I was even more surprised when Lewis came out in the 9th and nearly had Ali out on his feet. Lewis continued his assault unmercifully, but that’s not to say that Ali just stood there and took it. He unleashed some crippling blows that stunned Lewis more than once. Going into the 15th and final round, it seemed clear that Ali would have to pull off something magical to help his chances on winning the bout. Alas, it seemed he didn’t have enough in the tank to mount the performance he needed: Lewis UD15

Lewis catapults all the way to 5th in the rankings, while Ali sinks to 6th

Tyson #8 76-0 (4) v. Marciano #4 9-4-0 (4)

Well, a good first round, albeit with only five total punches being landed, but boy, they were all very impressive. The 2nd started with more tremendous shots being exchanged, the last of which was an earth shattering uppercut by Marciano that caught Tyson flush at the 2:41 mark: Marciano KO2

Tyson slumps to 13th, Marciano ekes up to 3rd

Loughran #16 3-8-2 (1) v. Frazier #4 4-8-1 (2)

Pretty much typical of my buddy Tommy Loughran’s fights so far this season. He had a number of good rounds, unfortunately they were too few and far between. He suffered some fairly bad swelling under the left eye in the 5th, but gamely continued on. The wheels started to wobble in the 11th when an uppercut from Frazier knocked him down for a seven count. He regained his feet and continued, and it looked like once again he was going to still be around for the final bell at the end of the 15th. However, it was in the 15th that those wobbling wheels completely fell off, as Loughran was knocked down twice. He managed to more or less regain an upright position after the second, but he was pretty much out as Frazier went after him with abandon: Frazier TKO15

Loughran heads down to 19th, Frazier stays put in 4th

Johnson #7 5-5-3 v. Tunney #11 7-5-1

Well, here we had a match up of the last two fighters to not record a knockout. Would we witness a first for one of the two? It certainly didn’t look promising in the early going. It was a good enough fight, but the punches being landed seemed to more resemble two grannies than two of the finest heavyweights in the world. Not much changed as the 5th started to unfold, with a couple weak jabs being landed. Then, at the 1:25 mark, like a lightning bolt on a sunny day, Tunney landed a violent cross that sent Johnson crashing: Tunney KO5

Johnson drops to 15th, Tunney moves to 5th

McVey #9 7-6-0 (5) v. Louis #1 10-3-0 (8)

I found this to be a great fight, but that notwithstanding, there really isn’t all that much to say. Louis dominated pretty much from start to finish, although McVey did win the odd round here and there. Both men did develop swelling relatively early on, but this didn’t seem to be much of a factor. McVey was knocked down in the 11th by a hook to the jaw. If this didn’t seal his fate, the two knockdowns in the 13th (one right before the bell), and the 15th round felling certainly did. I will say this though, I was impressed that McVey was able to make his way to the final bell. However, it was clear that the number one ranked fighter in the HWPL would be staying number one: Louis UD15

McVey drops to 13th in the TBCB rankings, while Louis obviously stayed 1st

Holmes #16 7-3-2 (1) v. Klitschko #9 6-6-1 (1)

After an abysmal 1st round, the fight did get rather interesting, as Klitschko was absolutely crushing Holmes through the first eight rounds. It seemed he had an insurmountable lead at the half way point. This, of course, was greatly helped by that fact that he sent Holmes crashing to the canvas twice in the 8th (due to the fact that Holmes perhaps over trained? Or maybe the slight swelling that developed under his left eye in the 5th?). Whatever the case may be, Klitschko didn’t take his foot off the gas and was roaring towards perhaps one of, if not, the most convincing victories of the season. Klitschko did catch a bad break in the 10th when a shot from Holmes opened a cut on his left eyelid. A somewhat nasty wound that was re opened in the 12th, it thankfully did not rob Klitschko of the deserved result he earned: Klitschko UD15

Holmes sinks further to 19th, Klitschko rises to 6th

Random stat: Joe Frazier has the dubious honor of leading the league by being stopped six times so far this season

Johnson is really slipping, he is in the bottom third of the table now. Really shaping up to seem like the big punchers with good endurance are the class of the league, with Ali being the notable exception, which I attribute to his chin and defense.

Thinking in the end it will be between Louis, Marciano and Ali.

My money is on Louis. As for Johnson, I have been quite surprised by him so far. Especially since is the last of the twenty without a knockout. And he was only in the bottom third by ranking. As of now, he would be about mid table on points.

Liston #20 3-7-2 (1) v. Foreman #17 5-8-0 (3)

With these two, I will be amazed if the fight gets anywhere near fifteen rounds. Liston was put at a slight disadvantage relatively early on as he suffered some swelling under the left eye in the 5th. One thing in his favor, though, was the fact that by the beginning of the 9th, Foreman was running on fumes, although Liston wasn’t all that far behind him. And despite Foreman going down in the 10th and 13th, I was wrong, as the fight entered the 15th pretty much even. And much to Liston’s dismay, having really needed a win, that’s how it stayed at the final bell: Draw15

Rankings stay the same, Liston 20th, Foreman 17th

Langford #10 7-5-1 (3) v. Dempsey #2 8-5-0 (4)

Langford went down in the 1st thanks to a huge cross from Dempsey. I would say, judging from the reaction in the 2nd, that this irked Langford. He came out at the bell and was absolutely pummeling Dempsey, to the point where he was very nearly out on his feet. It looked as if the ref might step in to stop the action with about twenty seconds to go in the round. However, Langford saved him from having to make that decision as he dumped Dempsey with a barrage of punches: Langford KO2

Langford moves to 4th in the rankings, while Dempsey goes to 5th

Jeanette #16 5-8-0 (3) v. Jackson #15 5-7-0 (2)

A 1st round knockdown of Jeanette from a mean uppercut belied the fact that for a pretty long while, this was a pretty boring bout. There were some big punches landed by both men, but I think that knockdown so early built up the crowds anticipation, so leading up the 14th, events seemed anti climactic. The bell rang to begin the 14th, and Jeanette seemed to have a fairly good lead on Jackson. Well, Mr. Jackson seemed rather intent on changing this situation, and knocked Jeanette down twice in the round. He still had work to do, but it seemed that the momentum had changed going into the 15th. And boy oh boy did that momentum carry over. Jackson came out swinging at the opening bell and was pummeling Jeanette from one end of the ring to the other. He seemed intent on knocking him down again, but didn’t get the chance: Jackson TKO15

Jeanette sinks to 19th in the TBCB rankings, while moves up to 13th

Langford #4 8-5-1 (4) v. Liston #20 3-7-3 (1)

The first half of the fight was pretty much controlled by Langford, who also had the good fortune of causing some swelling under Liston’s right eye early in the 4th. The swelling looked pretty bad by the start of the 9th, and it was joined by swelling under the left in the same round. Next, in the 10th, the ever prettier looking Mr. Liston was the lucky recipient of a cut inside the right eyebrow. How long could he last under these conditions? Well, not to spoil things, he somehow made it to the final bell. But not before he was knocked down in the 15th, and somehow managed to struggle to his feet as the count reached 9. There was no doubt about the outcome, even before the knockdown though: Langford UD15

Langford moves to #2 in the rankings, Liston stays 20th

Stribling #15 5-8-1 (2) v. Lewis #8 5-8-1 (3)

Stribling suffered the bane of all boxers, when some fairly obvious swelling erupted under his left eye in the 3rd. Lewis was pretty much in control, although Stribling started fighter better in the 5th and 6th. At the opening bell of the 7th, Lewis came out of his corner with a look on his face like he seemed to think something special was going to happen. While I wouldn’t call it special, he launched into Stribling like a whirlwind, and there was seemingly no other course for the ref, but to step in and save Stribling with 19 seconds left on the clock: Lewis TKO7

Stribling stays put at 15th, Lewis moves up slightly to 6th

Louis #1 11-3-0 (8) v. Johnson #12 5-6-3

Here we have the marquee matchup of the week, even with many pundits shouting from the rooftops that Johnson was severely underperforming so far this season. This should be an interesting matchup, if only because of the rumors coming from Louis’ camp that he worked too hard in training for this fight. Well, he may have, but the fight didn’t last long enough for anyone to find out. At the 1:17 mark in the 2nd, Louis landed a devastating hook, and Johnson crumpled to the canvas. Try as he might, he just could not get to his feet. Many of us thought Johnson’s last result was surprising, this one will be classified as stunning, and seems to cement Louis’ status as favorite to win the league: Louis KO2

Louis stays 1st, Johnson drops to 14th

Next week, both Ali and Marciano will be in action. Also, I am glad I am not writing this as a story type thread, since I would have to be wondering if Mr. Johnson was on the take or something. Last two results have been totally shocking.

Tunney #7 8-5-1 (1) v. Klitschko #8 7-6-1 (1)

Klitschko nearly had Tunney finished off in the 4th, but he went over a minute without being able to land the blow that would have finished him off. Klitschko suffered a cut lip in the 6th, and minor swelling under the right eye in the 8th. It was also in the 8th that Klitschko landed a stunning blow that knocked Tunney down for an eight count. By the end of the 10th, Klitschko seemed to have a fairly nice lead, but starting in the 11th, Tunney tried valiantly to start a comeback. Valiant it may have been, but it was a case of too little too late, as Klitschko continued his impressive string of results against the pre season favorites: Klitschko UD15

Tunney drops two to 9th, while Klitschko moves up to 5th in the rankings

Marciano #3 10-4-0 (5) v. Foreman #16 5-8-1 (3)

Foreman charged out at the opening bell and went right at Marciano. Through the first three rounds, he was giving everything he had. It seemed he thought if he didn’t end the fight early, he would be in trouble. His plan seemed to backfire, as Marciano came out in the 4th and looked a bit irked. Marciano went straight to Foreman, and absolutely walloped him for two minutes straight, showing no mercy. The ref had seen enough, and he looked quite concerned for Foreman as he moved over and wrapped his arms around him, stopping the fight at the 2:18 mark: Marciano TKO4

Marciano stays 2nd, Foreman drops to 19th

Ali #8 8-5-1 (5) v. Holmes #17 7-4-2 (1)

The first half of the bout was pretty unremarkable, and I would say Holmes had a slight edge going into the 9th. Going into the 15th, the momentum had switched in the still unremarkable bout, and Ali appeared to have a strong lead over Holmes. Holmes came out on top in the final round, enough so that the decision would probably be more interesting than the fight: Ali MD15

Ali stays 8th, Holmes drops to 19th

Dempsey #6 8-6-0 (4) v. McVey #13 7-7-0 (5)

An unfortunate start for Dempsey, as he suffered some minor swelling under the right eye in the 3rd. Despite the setback, he seemed in control of the fight through five rounds. Then, out of nowhere, McVey landed a horrific shot under the ribs in the 6th. I honestly expected Dempsey to pop to his feet, but somehow, he couldn’t: McVey KO6

Dempsey drops to 9th, McVey moves up to 8th in the TBCB rankings

Frazier #4 5-8-1 (3) v. Tyson #12 7-7-0 (4)

At the half way point, Tyson seemed to have a pretty decent lead. The mild swelling started under Frazier’s right eye in the 5th seemed to be causing him issues. The only issue Tyson was encountering was the seemingly constant warnings directed at him by the ref, who was way too involved in the bout up to this point, when he didn’t need to be. The swelling was quickly turning into a problem for Frazier, causing a brief stoppage for an inspection at the very end of the 10th, but the two were told to continue. Frazier had one of the worst rounds of the year in the 13th, when he was not only dominated, he was knocked down twice for his troubles. The fight came to a fitting conclusion in the 15th, as a huge hook from Tyson toppled Frazier yet again, but this time, he couldn’t get up: Tyson KO15

Frazier drops to 8th, Tyson moves up to 7th

Jackson #13 6-7-0 (3) v. Jeffries #12 5-6-2 (2)

Rumors were swirling before the bout that Jackson may have over trained. Would we see that make a difference in the bout? The first half of the bout was a good one in my eyes. Jackson started out better, and controlled the first few rounds. But Jeffries was in no way intimidated, and knocked him down with a beautiful hook in the 7th. At the end of eight, with the knockdown, Jeffries looked to be winning, but with perhaps seven rounds left, who knows what could happen? Well, an even better fight broke out. It seems the knockdown had a belated effect on Jackson, and in the 10th he started to take the fight to Jeffries in a big way, including a knockdown in the 13th. Going into the 15th frame, Mr. Jackson seemed to be holding onto a very comfortable lead. A lead that then seemingly turned insurmountable as a big hook caught Jeffries' chin flush within the opening twenty seconds of the round, sending him crashing again: Jackson UD15

Jackson moves up a couple spots to 11th, Jeffries drops one to 13th

Tunney #12 8-6-1 (1) v. Jackson #11 7-7-0 (3)

This one promises to be a good bout, as long as Tunney doesn’t return to his ‘hugfest’ strategy of his earlier fights. And, we certainly didn’t have to wait long for the first surprise, as Tunney was sent crashing by a devastating cross from Jackson not even half way through the 1st. As often seems the case, the knockdown seemed to awaken something in Tunney, as he battled back slowly through the 5th. He convincingly won rounds six through eight, and many ringside cards had him with a slight edge at the half way point. Alas, it seemed Tunney had overdone it trying to get back into the lead, as he was promptly sent down in the 9th, and after staggering to his feet at the count of eight, Jackson very nearly had him out on his feet. Both fighters seemed to have hit the wall as the 12th started, and the action in the ring became less and less. As it was, the fight went into the penultimate round dead even. And Tunney seemed to have one the less than stellar round, but how heavy would the two knockdowns weigh on the judges minds: Jackson MD15

Tunney stays at #12, while Jackson jumps all the way to #6 in the TBCB rankings

Stribling #15 5-9-1 (2) v. Ali #7 9-5-1 (5)

Stribling came roaring out of the gate, and I thought for a second he might actually finish Ali off in the very first round. He couldn’t manage that, and a back and forth bout broke out. Stribling did suffer some swelling under the left in the 4th, and he was joined by Ali in the 5th. It would be interesting to see (no pun intended) who could take advantage of the situation. Stribling opened a gash under Ali’s left eye that remained open at the start of the 8th. Unlucky break for Ali. It may have been bad luck, but there was nothing bad about his performance, as he pretty much dominated the remainder of the fight, winning pretty much every round hands down, including a knockdown in the 11th and again in the 14th. Even though Stribling reached the final bell, there was no doubt about the outcome: Ali UD15

Stribling stays at #15, Ali up to #4

McVey #10 8-7-0 (6) v. Langford #3 9-5-1 (4)

Coming in, I was expecting this to be a great fight. Either way, with the fight being staged at the Mohegan Sun, at least I had the chance to visit my family. And, it was a most entertaining bout. In the first half of the fight, the two were even, seemingly dominated two rounds at a time, and then being dominated for two at a time. However, Langford’s knockdown of McVey in the 10th via a crushing uppercut signaled a change to this pattern, and going into the 15th, McVey would need to do something special to get the result he wanted. He didn’t, but I have no idea what fight the judges were watching: Draw15

Both fighters stay where they were in the rankings

Jumping on the Peter Jackson bandwagon - Jackson ruled the HW division much of my time playing the board game. Always had a soft spot for him after that.

He's certainly holding his own, however, his results against lesser opponents have held back a little. My soft spot is for Tommy Loughran, since he is such an underdog in the competition. The only reason I bring this up of course, my soft spot beat yours in week two.
