WBA Tournament Quarter Final #3

#2/EBU Champ John L. Gardner 21-0 (17) KO12 #5 Vinnie Manonegra 15-2-1 (5)
What looked like a walk in the park for the heavily favored European champion turned out to be a much more exciting fight than expected. Manonegra fought his way back into contention halfway through the fight and it looked like he could upset Gardner going in to the last round. Expert comentator "Hansom" Mike Hanson had the New Jersey based Manonegra ahead by two points. Gardner did what he needed to do in the last moment though and sank a vicious right hook under Manonegra's ribcage and ended the fight. Manonegra gasped for air and wasn't close to being able to continue. All three judges had it 106-104 in favor of Gardner at the time of the stoppage.

John L. Gardner keeps his unbeaten record and moves through to the WBA tournament semi final stage.

WBA Tournament Quarter Final #4

#6 Mahdi Husseini 13-1-4 (6) L TKO5 #8 Duane Bobick 14-2 (8)
Husseini looked in good shape early on but Bobick was simply too much for the Saudi. Husseini visited the canvas four times, one time in the fourth round and three times in the fifth.

Bobick impresses and moves on to the semi final round of the tourney
-----
#5 Larry Holmes 16-1 (9) KO7 #7 Domingo D'Elia 19-1 (7)
Holmes put on a boxing clinic and smashed the face of the brave Argentinian. D'Elia went down in the first round and took a severe beating, suffering multiple cuts and swelling, before finally being knocked out in the seventh round. A less leniant referee would have stopped the fight earlier. Holmes moves up in the rankings and is allready talking about fighting one
more time before the end of the year. D'Elia will have to take some time off to heal.
-----
A couple of other results in August:

Michael Dokes 4-0-0-1NC (2) Mike Boon 8-8-3 (2)

Leroy Jones 17-3-1 (3) UD10 Chris Sargent 6-12-2 (2)

Dwain Bonds 8-8-1 (3) KO4 Ben Weaver 6-6-8 (1)

Tom Fischer 6-1 (1) SD10 Curt Wilkerson 9-7-4 (6)

Jeff Shelburg 1-3 (1) SD6 Michael Jones 2-2 (1)
Shelburg finally gets in to the W's again. Hope this will turn things around for him.

Trevor Berbick 7-0 (2) TKO9 Alan Peters 14-7 (6)

WBA Tournament Semi-final round

All of the quarter finals of the WBA tournament has been fought and we are left with the following four fighters:

#1 Mike Weaver 20-0 (18)

#2 John L. Gardner 22-0 (18) - EBU Champion

#3 Gerrie Coetzee 17-0 (13)

and

#5 Duane Bobick 15-2 (13)

Weaver will fight Bobick in the first semi final and Gardner will take on Coetzee in the second bout. Both fights will be held on the same card in November.

It is hard to say who has looked the most impressive but I would give Weaver a small advantage over the rest of the bunch by a very little margin. Bobick is no pushover though if perhaps a bit uneven. Coetzee could also go all the way while Gardner has to be the least likely to win the title despite being undefeated so far.

I would love to see Gardner become WBA champ! However, I think it will be a Weaver v Coetzee final, with Weaver winning it.

Good stuff Tommy!

It was simply a case of one of those curve balls that the game throws you from time to time.

But, as you wrote, it makes it all a bit interesting to say the least. Mike Weaver or John Gardner is were I'd place my money right now.
The cutmen don't seem to do a whole lot if you don't use the protect cut strategy for every rounds after they are cut. His loss made the tournament more interesting and he will inevitably have a strap later.

Palafox, a created fighter, has been pretty solid so far with a win against Bernardo Mercado to his credit. He starched Gonzales easily to capture the first SABA title. Look out for Mercado wanting revenge and Alfredo Evangelista wanting to challenge for the belt in the future.

Vacant USBA HW Title
Trevor Berbick
8-0 (3) TKO8 Lou Esa 10-1 (7)
Esa (below left) was ahead on two cards despite being knocked down in the fifth. A right hook sent him down again in the eight round and when he got up it was on very wobbly legs. Berbick (below right) took full advantage of the dazed state of Esa and went all in. The referee saw what was about to happen and stopped the fight before Esa went down again.

Berbick captures the vacant USBA strap. Scores at the time of the stoppage were 67-65x2 for Esa and 67-65 for Berbick.

Berbick's had a terrible time in my TGPiS uni, so it's nice to see him having some success and making a good career start here in your uni.

Results in November 1977 - 1st WBA semifinal fight

WBA Tournament Semi final #1
Gerrie Coeetze
17-0 (13) vs. John L.Gardner 22-0 (18) - EBU Champion

Round 1: Both fighters come out to fight. There is no messing about here as both fighters are throwing big shots. Gardner lands early on but Coetzee returns the favor. Coetzee looks a little bit sharper early on and steals a close round with a solid combination that leaves a last impression on the judges before the bell rings.

Ringside expert score the round 10-9 Coetzee

Round 2: Coetzee is pressuring Gardner from the beginning. He controls the action and Gardner is forced to fight from the ropes and is trying to tie up the South African to slow down the pace a little. A straight right from Gardner connects about halfway through the round and Coetzee appears somewhat shaken. He regains composure very fast and the round ends as it began.

Ringside expert: 10-9 Coetzee.
Total score: 20-18 Coetzee.

Round 3: More of the same. Coetzee is in control, he looks very comfortable in there and the fight is starting to follow a pattern. Careless and unnecessary use of his head renders the South African a warning two minutes into the round. Tensions flare. Gardner is yelling at the referre, Coetzee is yelling at Gardner and both corners are yelling at eachother and their respective fighter. The referee manages to cool down the situation and the round can continue.

Ringside expert: 10-9 Coetzee
Total score: 30-27 Coetzee

Round 4: Coetzee steps up the pace and Gardner appears to have a hard time now. Nothing he does seems to have any effect on the South African and the pace combined with the shots he is eating is wearing him down. A right cross opens up a cut under Gardner's eye towards the end of the round. Gardner finishes the round with a good right cross of his own but Coetzee goes in to the rest as the winner of yet another round.

Ringside expert: 10-9 Coetzee
Total score: 40-36 Coetzee

Round 5: Gardner has found some much needed energy again and lands another big right cross. This one has Coetzee visibly shaken and it is very early in the round. Coetzee covers up and Gardner's momentum sort of fades away. Both men are now landing big punches and it looks like this fight isn't destined to go the full distance. Gardner lands a solid hook to the body and Coetzee shows signs of pain in his face. He backs away and Gardner has him pinned against the ropes now. He rains blows over Coetzee but most of them lands on the gloves and the arms as the South African covers up good. Coetzee counters with a big hook to the temple of Gardner and manages to break free from the ropes and escapes the barrage. Both fighters seem tired now and the rest of the round is fought at a slower pace. Gardner clocks Coetzee with yet another solid cross at
the very end of the round but once again the follow up amounts to nothing. The European champion claims his first round.

Ringside expert: 10-9 Gardner
Total score 49-46 Coetzee.

Round 6: Both fighters are now wearing marks of the trade in their faces. Gardner's corner has closed the cut but he is swelling in various places in the face. Round six is a slower affair than the previous rounds as both fighters look tired from the war that was round five. Between the holding and resting, Coetzee lands the better shots and takes the round narrowly.

Ringside expert: 10-9 Coetzee
Total score: 59-55 Coetzee

Round 7: After just 24 seconds Gardner throws a jab that Coetzee avoids and counters with a straight shot that lands like a bolt and sends the European champion to the canvas. Gardner climbs up on eight and is deemed to be ok by the referee. Coetzee smells blood and almost put Gardner down again with a hook that staggers the Brit. Coetzee picks his shots and lands a couple of clean ones..this is surely a matter of seconds now...A big right cross lands and Gardner is down again. Gardner is brave and climbs up on wobbly legs once again. We are only halfway through the round and Gardner will have to call on all his skills to survive now. It doesn't seem likely though. Coetzee, convinced that he is moments away now, throws punches in volumes now. Some lands, some misses but the fact that Gardner is still answering with a punch or two is the only thing keeping the referee from stopping it now. Nobody would fault him for stopping the fight. Eventually the unevitable happens and one ofCoetzee's swings land flush on Gardner's chin and he collapses to canvas like a ton of bricks after 2.20 into the round.

Gerrie Coetzee beats John L.Gardner by way of TKO in the seventh round. Coetzee is still undefeated and fights for the WBA Heavyweight title in his next fight at the beginning of 1978.

All three judges had Coetzee winning by 59-55 at the time of the stoppage.

Results in November 1977 - 2nd WBA semifinal fight

WBA Tournament Semi final #2
Mike Weaver
20-0 (18) vs. Duane Bobick 15-2 (13)

Round 1: Weaver jabs cautiously a couple of times before unleashing a flurry of punches that looked good but didn't harm Bobick in any way. Weaver hits one into the ribs of Bobick and forces him to move backwards. Bobick retreats into the corner and Weaver keeps pressuring him. Bobick move his head and Weaver doesn't connect clearly and then BOOM...Bobick lands an uppercut that sends Weaver backwards with his arms flailing. Bobick jumps all over him and a short combo sends Weaver to the canvas. The audience is boiling. Bobick is no inferior fighter by any means but this they didn't expect. Weaver spills no time and gets up after a short count. Weaver looks like he is in a world of trouble and is holding on by a thread when a big cross lands and he goes down again with only a couple of seconds to go. Weaver gets up again and the bell
rings.

Ringside expert score the round 10-7 for Bobick

Round 2: Weaver recovers well between rounds and Bobick's momentum diminishes. Nothing much happens in the round and Weaver is able to catch his breath even more as the action slows down considerably.

Ringside expert: 10-10.
Total score: 20-17 Bobick.

Round 3: Another slow round with a lot of clincing and holding. Neither fighter is landing anything big but Weaver lands the cleaner shots and wins the round narrowly.

Ringside expert: 10-9 Weaver
Total score: 29-27 Bobick

Round 4: A bit faster pace from both fighters now. It looks like they've found some energy in the two previous slow rounds. A magnificent exchange between the two after 45 seconds. Bobick looks focused again and a precise jab makes way for a right cross that shakes Weaver again. Weaver turtles and moves away and Bobick isn't able to take advantage of the situation. Bobick controls the rest of the round and hits Weaver with a couple of more solid shots.

Ringside expert: 10-9 Bobick
Total score: 39-36 Bobick

Round 5: Weaver lands a smashing hook early on and sets the pace. Another hook a bit later staggers Bobick a little and Weaver follows up with a short, hard left to Bobicks ribs. Bobick shows signs of pain and tries to protect his midsection. Weawer goes after him but Bobick answers with a straight right that puts Weaver back on his heals. The fighters tie each other up. Both fighters land solid punches on eachother for the duration of the round but Weawer did enough to win it.

Ringside expert: 10-9 Weaver
Total score: 48-46 Bobick

Round 6: The round starts even but Bobick takes over as time goes. Weaver is in a bit of trouble a couple of times. Weaver tries to salvage the round with a burst at the end but his punches land on Bobick's arms.

Ringside expert: 10-9 Bobick
Total score: 58-55 Bobick

Round 7: Weaver's trainer is furious and is yelling at Waever to step it up if he is going to have any chance at winning tonight. Weaver listens and comes out at furious pace. Halfway through the round Bobick is being beaten from side to side and has yet to land anything meaningful. Whatever he lands doesn't bother Weaver at all. A sharp combination at the end of the round has Bobick staggering backwards. Weaver sees his chance and goes all in. A couple of more hard shots lands and
the referee jumps between the two fighters to protect Bobick from more punishment with only eight seconds to go of the round. Bobick is furious and tries to convince the referee that he was ok and could defend himself. To be honest he doesn't look that bothered by the beating he took right right now.

Weaver comes from behind and scores a somewhat controversial TKO victory in the seventh round to secure a title fight against Coetzee early next year.

Scores at the time of the stoppage were 58-55x2 and 57-56 for Bobick.

Larry Holmes 17-1 (10) TKO1 Kevin Drake* 12-3-3 (4)
Holmes sent a statement when he avenged his earlier loss against Drake and annihilated him in the process. Drake looked like a child in Holmes' hands and was punished from the very beginning up until the referee stopped the fight with 22 seconds to go.

This was Drake's second TKO loss in six months as he lost to Gerrie Coetzee in the third round in June this year.

Jeff Shelburg update

Life in the ring for Jeff Shelburg hasn't been easy this year. The Utah based fighter has been active in his rookie year as a pro and has fought six times so far.

Shelburg's debut showed promise as he knocked out fellow debutant Bryan Parkinson in the fourth round. Encouraged by the win he took another fight just a month later and suffered a somewhat questionable TKO in the fourth round against John Smith. The referee stopped the fight with a couple of seconds to go of the round but Shelburg, who hadn't been knocked down in the fight, looked ok to most spectators.

Shelburg was back in action in April and May but was on the loosing end of a split decision against Dave Johnson and a unanimous one against Jeff Rogers. A couple of months rest did him good and it looked promising when he decisioned Michael Johnson in August. Unfortunately Shelburg couldn't finish the year on a winning streak as he was totally outboxed and knocked out in three rounds against dangerous newcomer Jon Fish in October. His record at the end of 1977 stands at 2-4 with one KO to his credit.

1978 will certainly be a deciding year for Shelburg. Rumours has it that he is focused and is hitting the gym harder than ever before and that it shows as small improvements in some areas of his game.

Weaver vs. Coetzee title fight in February

As 1978 begins we have several big fights to look forward to. The fight that will generate the biggest interest is of course the WBA Heavyweight tournament final fight between Mike Weaver and Gerrie Coetzee in February. The two unbeaten fighters will clash for the honour of being crowned the very first WBA HW champion. It is hard to predict a clear outcome as both fighters are very even. Maybe Coetzee is the favorite by the smallest of margins based on the last results.

The European title will be at stake when current EBU king John L.Gardner will take on Denmarks Allan Rasmussen in London in March. Gardner, who lost against Coetzee in his last outing in November has taken some criticism for not fighting the #1 challenger Lorenzo Zanon at this point. Many consider Rasmussen, who is ranked in 10th in the world by the WBA, to be somewhat of a protected fighter with a record that doesn't show the truth. Others point to the fact that the Dane hasn't lost in over two years and has knocked out his last 11 opponents. Gardner is still a big favorite though and if he can beat Rasmussen we will most likely see a fight against Zanon later this year.

Zanon won't be inactive during the wait either. He will face Englands Bryan Watts on the Weaver-Coetzee undercard. Zanon is the favorite here and has more experience of bigger fights. Watts has a win over J-P Coopman as his biggest achievment so far.

Kicking of the new year though is Larry Holmes who returns to the ring less than a month since his complete destruction of Kevin Drake. His opponent this time will be #12 ranked Dalton Shepard. Almost nobody gives Shepard any chance of winning this fight but stranger things has happened.

Results in January 1978

Larry Holmes 18-1 (11) UD12 Dalton Shepard 14-4-4 (8)
Holmes cruised through his second fight in as many months and won a lopsided UD over Dalton Shepard. Shepard was down in the
fifth round but Holmes wasn't able or didn't bother to finish him. Holmes will surely take some criticism for not putting Shepard away.

Final scores were 118-109x2 and 117-110.
-----
SABA Heavyweight Title Fight
CH - Vicente Palafox
17-2 (11) L KO7 Alfredo Evangelista 12-1 (11)
The Colombian SABA champion got to keep his title for roughly three months before losing it to Evangelista in his 1st defense.
-----
OPBF Heavyweight Title Fight
CH - Noah Fairbanks
13-7 (7) L TKO12 Aaron Brown 16-8 (9)
Fairbanks was the 2nd regional title holder that fell this month. Just as his Colombian counterpart he held the title for three months and lost it in his 1st defense.

Snipes (below left) wins in his debut.

Mercado made quick work out of Trejo. Nothing to boast about though as the Argentinians record leaves little to the imagination.

Trevor Berbick 9-0 (4) KO4 Pete Noonan 9-12-2 (2)
Berbick's USBA belt wasn't at stake.

Charley Weinert 5-0 (1) UD6 Ronnie McClain 2-3 (2)

Kallie Knoetze 7-1 (6) KO5 Aswad Akil 15-3-4 (6)

Lucien Rodriguez 14-3-2 (2) UD10 Sugar Silex 8-1-1 (2)

Pinky Thomas (below right) wins in his debut.

Michael Dokes 6-0-0-1NC (3) L KO3 Gilbert Grady 11-13 (4)
Big surprise as Grady, a low level journeyman managed to knock out the highly regarded prospect.

Coetzee becomes first ever WBA HW Champion

WBA Heavyweight Title Fight, February 1978
Mike Weaver
21-0 (19) L TKO6 Gerrie Coetzee 18-0 (14)
The 1st ever WBA title fight was nothing short of spectacular. Both fighters came out guns blazing and put on a fight that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Coetzee rocked Weaver several times in the 1st round and a lesser fighter than Weaver wouldn't have survived. Weaver returned the favor in round two as the roles were completely turned around. Coetzee was cut on the bridge of the nose.

Weaver visited the canvas in the 3rd round and Coetzee dictated all the terms again. He got up and did enough to survive the round. Round four was another huge round for Coetzee. He beat Weaver from post to post and the crowd sensed a knockout coming at any point. Weaver hung on once more and stumbled back to his corner for a much needed rest once the bell rang. Everybody anticipated a knockout in the 5th stanza and it almost came at 0:41 when Coetzee landed a monstrous right cross. Amazingly enough Weaver took the punch and managed to tie up Coetzee with very wobbly legs. He recovered surprisingly fast and mounted an offense of his own. He gained some momentum and did enough to steal the round from the South African.

The inevitable end came at round six though. With all energy spent in the previous round, Weaver was battered again. At 1:20 he was hit by another big right cross and dropped again. He mustered all of his remaining energy and climbed up just to be jumped by Coetzee as soon as the referee started the action. Weaver took a couple of shots before the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. Gerrie Coetzee had fought a ruthless fight and blew Weaver away and captured the WBA Heavyweight strap in convincing fashion.

Scores at the time of the stoppage were 48-46x3 for Coetzee.
