"Black Gums Jack"

After gaining a new found passion for all things TB, I thought I would dive into a new type of simulation;

By placing myself, as a professional boxer, into a set time of boxing's history.

If nothing else, I hope that a certain amount of vanity will propel me to finish this simulation.

1997

First Year Pro

An "Expert" opinion on Bask's boxing abilities;

Quote:
Bask should be able to hold his own against club fighters but not much else in the super featherweight division.

He's average when it comes to landing his punches... but he's got punching power that must be respected.

People don't realize, but he's pretty good at getting a hurt fighter to hit the canvas.

He prefers to stand at a distance and stick his jab, but a smart boxer will also watch out for his hook.

I think he could control the fight against the lesser lights of the division, like I said before... but he would be absolutely dominated by someone with good boxing skills.

Bask's defence is weak, not much of a counter-puncher. He had a reputation in the amateurs of a weak chin. He can be knocked out but it won't be easy. I ain't seen him cut yet... but now he's pro.

He don't go inside. He knows how to win a fight on points. He is decent at covering up after getting hit.

Bask gets the job done

In the build up to his first professional contest, Bask was letting everybody who would listen know what would win him this fight,

"hands as fast as lighting, as bad as thunder."

It didn't come down to hand speed, but Matthew's inability to close out the first three rounds.

Round 1, the closest of the night, Bask utilizes his speed of foot to evade Matthews until a jab followed by a cross triggers close quarters exchanges with Bask getting the best. Matthews' received a caution for holding and hitting early on.

Round 2, Matthews hurts Bask inside thirty, body punches causes Bask all kinds of problems, then Bask establishes the jab and hits Matthew with a big cross to turn the round around.

Round 3, again Matthews take the lead, around the minute mark landing a stinging combination. Both boxers step back and re-evaluate their opponent, then Bask lands cleaner shots to see out the round.

Round 4, almost a minute before any action is seen, a jab from Bask. Another big cross lands for Bask, and Matthews' drops any intention of picking up the pace... until Bask voluntarily sits on the ropes on the two-minute mark. Matthews follows and they go hell-for-leather, Bask seemingly on top.

Bloodied Bask pulls off win

In his second professional contest, Bask travelled to Scotland to face serial opponent Peter Buckley 21-65-6.

"Wait long, strike fast."

At the weigh-in Bask again spoke of his desire for speed of hands, stating his training consisted of only sparring and drills to fasten his fists.

Hand speed may have been a contributing factor, his ability to land first didn't help Bask's accuracy. Except for a worrying third round, where he was penalised for a low blow, Bask seemed comfortable going the distance.

Round 1, Buckley the aggressor, but apart from a solid hook to the body fails to land anything of note. Bask's hand speed allows some pretty yet harmless combinations to score.

Round 2, Bask lands a solid cross that wobbles Buckley, yet fails to follow it up. They exchange jabs until another cross backs Buckley up.

Round 3, Bask assumes the counter-punchers role, yet it backfires as Buckley dictates the tempo and has his best round scoring on almost every attack.

Round 4, in the toughest to call round, Buckley is slow off his stool and allows Bask to smother him in the corner. An uppercut dazes Buckley, who returns fire and several close exchanges follow as Buckley attempts to push Bask onto the ropes.

Round 5, Bask uses his legs to keep out of trouble as he begins to breath heavy. Buckley chases, but is peppered with the jab and some sneaky right handers.

Round 6, a cautious start gives way to a blistering series of exchanges. Bask settles down and dances whilst using the jab, aware he's done enough as Buckley charges.

Bask gets off canvas to take decision

In his third bout in as many months, Bask returns to London to meet opponent Wayne Jones 6-18-2.

"Be fast with your fist."

After joining super middleweight Herol "Bomber" Graham's entourage prior to the weigh-in. Bask failed to make the 130lbs limit on the first attempt by ¼lb.

An hour later he hit the scales at 130lbs dead.

Despite the referee's scorecard, only the first three rounds were competitive. Bask got decked, yet rallied to take every round.

Round 1, both boxers stand square and really go for it. Some hard punches are thrown and landed, back and forth until with the last punch of the round Bask almost snaps Jones' head off with a right hook.

Round 2, Bask finds range with his jab, landing some nice scoring punches. At the half-way mark they stand center stage and exchange blows, Bask comes off best. Jones ends a combination with a big overhand right that lands flush. Bask drops to one knee. At four Bask is up, but shaky. Luckily for him there's only seven seconds left.

Round 3, Bask rushes out of the corner and they go toe-to-toe. Neither are hurting the other, yet Bask work is looking more effective. Again Bask's jab is the difference.

Round 4, Jones endures a tough round where Bask throws just about everything he's got. Body shots land regularly for Bask, as Jones seems to sag, Bask gets on his toes and returns to the jab.

Round 5, Bask is throwing combination after combination. Punches in bunches. Jones in an act of bravado motions Bask on for more, other than a brief exchange not too much action.

Round 6, Jones fails to do anything. He's in there to last now. Bask sensing the change, tries to force the fight, yet the snap seems to have gone from his punches. He reverts to the jab and sees out the fight.

Bask in comfortable decision victory

After a month away from the ring, Bask travelled to Liverpool to square off against "Brummie" Carl Allen 7-7-2.

"Be alert with your eyes."

Unlike his last weigh-in Bask easily made the 130lbs limit, with a career low of 128lbs. Allen also weighed in at 128lbs.

The opening bout of the night was rather one-sided, Bask in each round gained an early lead and out boxed his slow-starting opponent.

Round 1, Bask lands a storming double jab followed by the cross. Allen off balance, was on the end of some tasty looking hooks as Bask worked his way in close.

Round 2, both use the jabs to find their range, with both landing. A close round until they exchange two minutes in, with Bask coming off stronger, forcing Allen to step back out of range.

Round 3, Allen forgets the jab and tries to get nose-to-nose with Bask. The strategy fails as Bask uses his jab to keep Allen rushing in. A nice short right from Allen in the last ten freezes Bask.

Round 4, Bask lets the work rate drop, confident of victory. Allen seemingly does likewise, settling for a points defeat.
