Professional Olympics

Boxing did not start in the summer Olympics until the 1904 games. Thought I'd go ahead and start them out in the first summer Olympiad (1896) using pro boxers from the game. I'll fill out any weight class with Amateur (RFG created) fighters to avoid the use of byes in the tournament brackets.

I stole this universe idea from JeffR who did an olympic replay using pro boxers from the game back in 2004. 9 years have past so I hope he will not care.

My goal for this universe is to complete all the olympic years starting in 1896 thru 2012. Good luck to me. I'll even replay the war years when no summer olympics were held. Also of note, the Soviet Union team did not participate in the olympics until 1952 but I'll include them at the beginning of this universe.

Boxers qualify for the Olympics through performances at regional tournaments in Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and Oceania. The number of boxers accepted from any region depends upon the strength of boxing in that region and varies between weight divisions. The boxers are paired off at random for the Olympic Games, without regard to ranking. They fight in a single-elimination tournament, with the winner advancing to the next round and the loser dropping out of the competition. Winning boxers progress through the preliminary rounds to the quarterfinals and semifinals. The two semifinals winners fight for the gold and silver medals, while both losing semifinalists receive bronze medals.

note: Asia region is void of boxers in the early years so you will see a lot of amateur fighters from this region in the early Olympiads.

-Bouts are three 3-minute rounds.

-Bouts decided by punches landed instead of judges' decision. For a punch to count, it must be scored by three of the five judges at ringside. (Note: to simulate this system, I'll calculate each fighter's score by adding the average number of punches per round to the total number of points awarded by the judges using a 1-point scoring system, to add a bit of bias towards the 'winner'. The resulting numbers should be similar to the actual totals in an amateur boxing bout. e.g., Lennox Lewis lands 17.5 punches per round and the judges score the fight 4-0, 3-1, and 2-1 in his favor, so he gets 17+4+3+2 = 26 'scored' punches.)

-Three fouls in a fight disqualifies fighter.

-Three knockdowns in a round or four in a fight stops the fight.

-Referee set to strict/easy stoppages.

-Tournament placing in the brackets, drawn randomly.

-Normal Olympic boxing age limit of 17 to 34 is lifted.

Round one saw a nice exchange between the two fighters. Rd 2, Weir was getting the best and Blount started

to get DQ'd and Weir took advantage and scored big.

Holloway won round one (point wise) but he was penalized for hitting way too low and lost the round
at the ref's discretion. Leon mounted a huge point in the 2nd round. Holloway finished round 3
strong out-pointing Leon but could not close the gap in scoring.

Mullins had his way in this fight and was never in trouble.

Even fight after 2. Dawson lands a huge right hook 10 seconds into the 3rd and staggers the rookie.
Dawson scored at will after the hook and all Prawiranega could do was defend himself with no chance

I figured the amateurs would have an outside shot in these short distance fights even though their ratings are low .
