Professional Olympics

Boxing did not start in the summer Olympics until the 1904 games. Thought I'd go ahead and start them out in the first summer Olympiad (1896) using pro boxers from the game. I'll fill out any weight class with Amateur (RFG created) fighters to avoid the use of byes in the tournament brackets.

I stole this universe idea from JeffR who did an olympic replay using pro boxers from the game back in 2004. 9 years have past so I hope he will not care.

My goal for this universe is to complete all the olympic years starting in 1896 thru 2012. Good luck to me. I'll even replay the war years when no summer olympics were held. Also of note, the Soviet Union team did not participate in the olympics until 1952 but I'll include them at the beginning of this universe.

1896: First Professional Olympics

Boxers qualify for the Olympics through performances at regional tournaments in Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and Oceania. The number of boxers accepted from any region depends upon the strength of boxing in that region and varies between weight divisions. The boxers are paired off at random for the Olympic Games, without regard to ranking. They fight in a single-elimination tournament, with the winner advancing to the next round and the loser dropping out of the competition. Winning boxers progress through the preliminary rounds to the quarterfinals and semifinals. The two semifinals winners fight for the gold and silver medals, while both losing semifinalists receive bronze medals.

note: Asia region is void of boxers in the early years so you will see a lot of amateur fighters from this region in the early Olympiads.

Rules for Olympic Boxing

-Bouts are three 3-minute rounds.

-Bouts decided by punches landed instead of judges' decision. For a punch to count, it must be scored by three of the five judges at ringside. (Note: to simulate this system, I'll calculate each fighter's score by adding the average number of punches per round to the total number of points awarded by the judges using a 1-point scoring system, to add a bit of bias towards the 'winner'. The resulting numbers should be similar to the actual totals in an amateur boxing bout. e.g., Lennox Lewis lands 17.5 punches per round and the judges score the fight 4-0, 3-1, and 2-1 in his favor, so he gets 17+4+3+2 = 26 'scored' punches.)

-Three fouls in a fight disqualifies fighter.

-Three knockdowns in a round or four in a fight stops the fight.

-Referee set to strict/easy stoppages.

-Tournament placing in the brackets, drawn randomly.

-Normal Olympic boxing age limit of 17 to 34 is lifted.

Team Previews, Asia Region

All amateurs fill this region.

Since the Asian region is void of boxers in the TBCB db during the early years, I'll be using RFG fighters to fill out this region. When the Soviets started participating in the Olympics in 1952 and were a dominant team right from the get go, I'll give them a chance to repeat the dominance starting in 1896.

In the first fight of the 1896 Olympic boxing tournament, the Philipino

The US pro has no problem sending the amateur packing.

Both amateurs put on a good show. I'd hate to judge this fight.
RESULT: DAVIDSON* 30, BASSAM* 28

Game effort from the amateur but the Anthony's pro ring experience proves too much.

April 7 - Bantamweight Draw and Preliminaries, Round I

Schedule:

Barney McCall (Canada) vs Billy Plimmer (England)
Louie Blount* (Bahamas) vs Ike Weir (Northern Ireland)
Casper Leon (Italy) vs Jim Holloway (South Africa)
Peter Laurits Jacobsen (Denmark) vs Bill Mullins (Australia)
Slamet Prawiranega* (Indonesia) vs Andy Dawson (New Zealand)
António Arce* (Ecuador) vs Faddei Zhirmunsky* (Soviet Union)
Jimmy Barry (USA) vs Izak Wiersma* (Belgium)
Jimmy Dime (Ireland) vs Jong-gook Chu* (South Korea)

Results:

McCall (Canada) vs Plimmer (England)
Round one was scored even (12-12). 2 & 3 belonged to Plimmer. McCall forgot the fight was 3 rounds.
RESULT: PLIMMER 42, MCCALL 12

Blount* (Bahamas) vs Weir (Northern Ireland)
Round one saw a nice exchange between the two fighters. Rd 2, Weir was getting the best and Blount started
to hold hit until the ref stepped in and gave his final warning. Rd. 3 saw a passive Blount as he did not want
to get DQ'd and Weir took advantage and scored big.
RESULT: WEIR 37, BLOUNT* 15

Leon (Italy) vs Holloway (South Africa)
Holloway won round one (point wise) but he was penalized for hitting way too low and lost the round
at the ref's discretion. Leon mounted a huge point in the 2nd round. Holloway finished round 3
strong out-pointing Leon but could not close the gap in scoring.
RESULT: LEON 31, HOLLOWAY 24

Jacobsen (Denmark) vs Mullins (Australia)
Mullins had his way in this fight and was never in trouble.
RESULT: MULLINS 43, JACOBSEN 14

Prawiranega* (Indonesia) vs Dawson (New Zealand)
Even fight after 2. Dawson lands a huge right hook 10 seconds into the 3rd and staggers the rookie.
Dawson scored at will after the hook and all Prawiranega could do was defend himself with no chance
of mounting any offense.
RESULT: DAWSON 28, PRAWIRANEGA* 17

Arce* (Ecuador) vs Zhirmunsky* (Soviet Union)
Arce takes care of buisiness over the heavily favored Russian. Arce didn't put alot on his punches
but what he threw scored.
RESULT: ARCE* 36, ZHIRMUNSKY* 19

Barry (USA) vs Wiersma* (Belgium)
Gold medal favorite Barry showed why he is the man to beat. He toyed with Wiersma for 2 rounds
and dropped him twice in the 3rd.
RESULT: BARRY 47, WIERSMA* 6

Dime (Ireland) vs Chu* (South Korea)
Medal hopeful Dime had no problem with the amateur winning all 3 rounds. Dime faces gold medal
favorite in the quarterfinals next. He'll have to win that one to stay in the hunt for a medal.
RESULT: DIME 45, CHU* 18

In an entertaining fight, Murphy takes the early advantage and successfully resists Atajahov's attempts to rally.
RESULT: MURPHY 37, ATAJAHOV* 24

Garcia (Cuba) vs Hollywood (Ireland)
IN a one-sided fight, Hollywood grabs an early lead in the first round then plays it safe the rest of the way,
wisely staying outside and maintaining his big lead.
RESULT: HOLLYWOOD 41, GARCIA 6

González* (Panama) vs Griffo (Australia)
Griffo unleashes a torrid attack, leaving the flustered Panamanian on the defensive the whole way.
The fight comes very close to being stopped when the final bell rings.
RESULT: GRIFFO 46, GONZALEZ* 19

Mangin* (France) vs Bregar* (Germany)
It's a very close fight, but the final verdict of a three-punch win for Mangin is a bit of a surprise,
as most ringsiders thought Bregar had the slight edge.
RESULT: MANGIN* 28, BREGAR* 25

Essler (South Africa) vs Whistler (Northern Ireland)
The result is one-sided, as Whistler totally dominates his South African opponent, landing punches
at will and piling up a huge points lead.

his Aussie opponent by two punches.
RESULT: HAGERSTROM 19, MCAULIFFE 17

Thompson makes the mistake of spending too much time waiting to land a heavy blow and pays for it
as Abbott piles up points with his jab and takes an easy decision.

Harry Gilmore (Canada) vs Barney Malone (South Africa)
In a close fight, Malone lands a hook in the final seconds of the 3rd to keep the decision out of the judges hands.

More of an upset than you know. Danh-Canh Due's rating is a 5.

I figured the amateurs would have an outside shot in these short distance fights even though their ratings are low .
