Group 1

This group include boxers from the early sixties:

1 Floyd Patterson
2 Eddie Machen
3 Zora Folley
4 Amos Lincoln
5 Joe Erskine
6 Roger Rischer

Patterson appears as the main favourite to win the group, Machen and Folley will compete for the second place on the following round. Lincoln could be the surprise on this group. Erskine and Rischer don't seem to have chances of advancing to the following round.

Final Standings

2 Eddie Machen 4-1-0 (2)
3 Zora Folley 3-2-0 (1)
4 Amos Lincoln 2-3-0
5 Roger Rischer 1-4-0
6 Joe Erskine 0-5-0

Easy way for Patterson with an outstanding performance on his fight against Folley. Only Machen was a real rival for him. The fight between Machen and Folley was the key for the definition of the second place on the following round and Machen clearly outpointed Folley on an action packed fight.

Another group with boxers of the early sixties.

1 Sonny Liston
2 Doug Jones
3 Robert Cleroux
4 Henry Cooper
5 Brian London
6 Joe Bygraves

Liston is the clear-cut favourite to win this group, Jones, the canadian Cleroux and englishman Henry Cooper will compete fo the second place on the following round. London and Bygraves seems to be a step backwards.

HW: Doug Jones 0-0-0 (0) MD10 Henry Cooper 0-0-0 (0)
HW: Joe Bygraves 0-0-0 (0) TKO6 Robert Cleroux 0-0-0 (0)

HW: Robert Cleroux 2-2-0 (2) UD10 Doug Jones 3-1-0 (1)
HW: Sonny Liston 4-0-0 (3) TKO5 Henry Cooper 1-3-0 (1)
HW: Brian London 1-3-0 (1) TKO7 Joe Bygraves 1-3-0 (1)

Final Standings

1 Sonny Liston 5-0-0 (4)
2 Robert Cleroux 3-2-0 (2)
3 Doug Jones 3-2-0 (1)
4 Brian London 2-3-0 (2)
5 Henry Cooper 1-4-0 (1)
6 Joe Bygraves 1-4-0 (1)

As it was expected Liston stopped four of his rivals and gave Robert Cleroux a real beating in spite of not stopping him. The canadian Cleroux won the second place on the second round with his victory against Doug Jones in spite of strugling on his first fight against little regarded Bygraves. Good performance by Brina London and bad tournament for Cooper.

A mid-sixties group:

1 George Chuvalo
2 Gregorio Peralta
3 Karl Mildenberger

6 Tom McNeeley

Chuvalo and Peralta seems to be the main favourites to win the group. Mildenberger appears to be the only capable to challnge the fovourites.

3 Karl Midenberger 2-1-2
4 Sante Amonti 2-2-1 (2)
5 Alex Miteff 1-4-0 (1)
6 Tom McNeeley 0-4-1 (1)

The main favourites Chuvalo and Peralta advanced to the following round. The fight between then was very close with a little in margin in Peralta's favor until he was disqualified due to a low blow. Midenberger scored a resonant victory against Chuvalo but a pair of technical draws against Amontyi and McNeeley let him without chances to challenge for one of the two places. Good tournament for the italian Amonti.

TH,

I like the groupings thus far, and I think that you're working off a vary strong concept.

So correct me if I'm wrong, you're planning to pull the best out of each era and end with an ultimate showdown between the two fighters left standing.

Sounds like something I'll be following very closely!

With "The Greatest" in action we have another mid to late sixties group.

1 Muhammad Ali
2 Buster Mathis
3 Leotis Martin
4 Eduardo Corletti

3 Eduardo Corletti 2-3-0 (1)
4 Thad Spencer 2-3-0
5 Buster Mathis 1-3-1
6 Jack Bodell 1-4-0 (1)

Easy way for Muhammad Ali that knocked out four of his five rivals to wint the tournamnet. Martin won the secnd place and Buster Mathis was the great deception of the group in spite of being the only one who lasted the distance with Ali. Mathis also was robbed of a legitime victory against Martin when the fight was ruled a draw. Good tournament for Corletti and Spencer.

Late sixties early seventies group.

1 Oscar Bonavena
2 Bob Foster
3 Billy Daniels
4 Manuel Ramos
5 Roberto Davila
6 Jurgen Blin

Bonavena seems to be the class of this very even field. Light Heavyweight champion Bob Foster appears as his main enemy. Daniels and Ramos have the chance to give a surprise.

Big run for Billy Daniels that outpointed both favourites Foster and Bonavena to win the group undefeated. Foster defeats Bonavena on a decesive fight and won the other place on the second round. Bad tournamnet for Ringo and a good one for Blin that earned two unexpected wins.

With Joe in action another late sixties early seventies group.

2 Al Jones 2-1-2 (1)
3 Larry Middleton 2-2-1
4 Chuck Wepner 2-3-0
5 Hubert Hilton 1-3-1
6 Henry Clark 1-4-0

Frazier stopped all his rivals to win the group on a bright form in spite of being dropped by Al Jones on his most difficult fight. For the second place there was a close dispute between Jones, Middleton and a surprising Wepner. A defeat against Clark on the final round left Middleton without nothing and allowed Jones to pass to the following round with an agonic draw against Hilton.

I'll presume that the "Al Jones" here is the one from Florida as opposed to the other guy from Memphis who also fought during the 60's...world of difference between the two!!!!

Finally as it was expected Quarry and Norton easily dominated the group and on the last bout they faced eachother to determine the winner of the group with Quarry winning by points on a sort of minor upset.

An early to mid seventies group with Big George in action.

1 George Foreman
2 Joe Bugner
3 Alvin Lewis
4 Domenico Adinolfi
5 Jeff Merrit
6 Jose Urtain

Foreman is the hot favourite to win this group with Bugner, Al Lewis and Adinolfi fighting for the second place on the following round. Big puncher Jeff Merrit has the conditions to score some upsets.

3 Domenico Adinolfi 3-2-0
4 Jeff Merritt 2-3-0 (2)
5 Al Lewis 1-4-0
6 Jose Urtain 0-5-0

Foreman destroyed all his rivals only Adinolfi lasted the distance but with a pair of trips to the canvas. Bugner and Adinolfi defined the second place on the following round on the last fight with the victory of Bugner by KO8 on a very competitve fight. Merrit did a good run with victories against Urtain and Al Lewis that was the great deception of this group.

1 Jimmy Young
2 Ron Lyle
3 Lorenzo Zanon
4 Duane Bobick
5 Ron Stander
6 Johny Bordreaux

Jimmy Young and Ron Lyle are the two favourites to win this group. Italian Lorenzo Zanon seems to be their main enemy, hard hitter but glass jaw Duane Bobick is a real guess.

6 Johny Borderoux 0-5-0

On the most even group to the date Jimmy Young managed to recover from a bad start, losing to Ron Lyle by a wide unanimous decision, to then win four consecutive fights and the group. Ron Stander produced the first big upset of the tournament qualifying for the second round with victories against Zanon and Ron Lyle that was the great loser of this group.

TH,

I figured as much! Yet for some strange reason, when ever I see Al Jones in the context of boxing, I always think of the tomato can from Memphis!

Florida Al was a pretty good fighter, and I always thought that he suffered from being active in a period where there were so many quality boxers in his division.

Nice to see that he's included in your uni!

Prof

P.S. I'm really enjoying following how everything is progressing with your universe.

Group 11

A late seventies to early eighties group.

1 Earnie Shavers
2 Mike Weaver
3 Scott LeDoux
4 Lucien Rodriguez
5 Stan Ward
6 Ibar Arrington

Big puncher Earnie Shavers seems to be the main favourite to win the group and Mike Weaver his worse enemy. Let see what LeDoux and Lucien Rodriguez can do on this group.

HW: Lucien Rodriquez 0-0-0 (0) KO3 Mike Weaver 0-0-0 (0)
HW: Earnie Shavers 0-0-0 (0) TKO4 Scott LeDoux 0-0-0 (0)
HW: Stan Ward 0-0-0 (0) MD10 Ibar Arrington 0-0-0 (0)

HW: Earnie Shavers 1-0-0 (1) KO8 Lucien Rodriquez 1-0-0 (1)
HW: Scott LeDoux 0-1-0 (0) MDraw10 Ibar Arrington 0-1-0 (0)
HW: Mike Weaver 0-1-0 (0) TKO8 Stan Ward 1-0-0 (0)

HW: Earnie Shavers 2-0-0 (2) KO5 Stan Ward 1-1-0 (0)
HW: Mike Weaver 1-1-0 (1) UD10 Ibar Arrington 0-1-1 (0)
HW: Lucien Rodriquez 1-1-0 (1) UD10 Scott LeDoux 0-1-1 (0)

HW: Scott LeDoux 0-2-1 (0) MD10 Stan Ward 1-2-0 (0)
HW: Earnie Shavers 3-0-0 (3) KO7 Mike Weaver 2-1-0 (1)
HW: Ibar Arrington 0-2-1 (0) UD10 Lucien Rodriquez 2-1-0 (1)

HW: Stan Ward 1-3-0 (0) TKO8 Lucien Rodriquez 2-2-0 (1)
HW: Mike Weaver 2-2-0 (1) UD10 Scott LeDoux 1-2-1 (0)
HW: Earnie Shavers 4-0-0 (4) UD10 Ibar Arrington 1-2-1 (0)

Final Standings

1 Earnie Shavers 5-0-0 (4)
2 Mike Weaver 3-2-0 (1)
3 Stan Ward 2-3-0 (1)
4 Lucien Rodriguez 2-3-0 (1)
5 Ibar Arrington 1-3-1
6 Scott LeDoux 1-3-1

As it was expected Shaver's power ruled the group stopping all his rivals except Arrington on the last fight. Mike Weaver started bad being stopped by Rodriguez but then recovered winning three and giving Shavers a close fight. An unexpected loss against Arrington let Lucien Rodriguez without a place on the second round.

Outstanding performance by "Big" John Tate that only was defeated by Cooney's power, with this victory Cooney earned his place on the second round. Thomas came short against Tate and Cooney. Bad performance by Michael Dokes only beating Cooney on the last fight.
