McCaffrey takes first LBF title

January 2, 1906

Dominic McCaffrey (14-5-3) used superior defense and survived a knockdown to win a UD15 over John L. Sullivan (19-5) to be crowned the new LBF Heavyweight champion.

Sullivan came out fast and won the first round. McCaffrey then took control of the fight and dominated the next 5 rounds. Sullivan suffered a cut under his right eye in the 4th. His right eye also started to swell shut then. The 8th threw the 11th was a slugfest. Sullivan dropped McCaffrey for a 7 count in the 9th and appeared to change the fight. Dom answered with a knockdown of his own in the 11th.

Both fighters appeared exhausted at that point and McCaffrey used his boxing skills to pull away in the last 4 rounds.

I had it 146-140 as did ringside expert Aurelio Barrios. The official judges saw it 146-138/147-138/144-141.

On the undercard
HW - Joe Goddard (8-10) UD10 Ed Dunkhorst (12-10-2)
HW - Billy Australian Smith (15-6) KO4 Johnny Woods (9-11-2)
HW - Oliver Williams (1-0) UD6 Jem Stewart (3-12) (williams a beginner in this club bout)
HW - Jack Stelzner (9-13-2) UD10 Tompkin Gilbert (3-16-1) (club fight)
HW - Morris Grant (9-10-5) UD10 Joe Lannon (8-13) (club fight)

O' Brien Cruises To Lbc Title

January 15th, 1906

Philadelphia Jack O' Brien (14-1-1) scored a UD15 over George Gardner (12-6-1) to win his second title, this time the LBC. Coming off an October loss to Joe Choynski where he lost his LBA title, O' Brien scored an easy victory over Gardner.

In a relatively boring fight, neither fighter was ever in trouble. O' Brien suffered a cut over his right eye in the 8th, Gardner was never hurt.

I had the fight 148-140, Tom Trunzo ringside had it 147-140. The official judges scored it 148-138/146-140/145-141.

On the undercard

WW - Joe Walcott (12-9-3) UD10 Scaldy Bill Quinn (1-4-1)
FW - Young Corbett (11-8-3) UD10 Tommy Sullivan (6-7-1)
MW - Arthur Cripps (3-1) UD6 Reinhardt Krass (TC) (0-1) (cripps fought as a beginner in this club fight)
WW - Dal Hawkins (3-2-1) KO3 Jason Murrey (TC) (0-1) (hawkins fought as a beginner in this club fight(
LW - Mike Daly (10-11-2) TKO1 Mike Cushing (5-13-4) (club fight)

Butler Wins Rematch Takes Lbc Title

January 17, 1906

Joe Butler (19-4-1) won a MD15 over Jack Burke (16-7-3) to win the first LBC middleweight belt. This was the second attempt at crowning a LBC champ as these two fought to a draw in November.

Burke was cruising through the early rounds until an uppercut dropped him in the 5th. It was all Butler from then on. Burke's right eye began to swell shut in the 7th and Butler worked it the rest of the way.

I had it 145-139, Danny Wildhawke ringside had it 145-140. The official judges had it 145-139/143-141/ and Burke's personal assistant somehow had it 142-142.

On the undercard

WW - George Cole (2-3) SD10 Willie Lewis (9-9)
HW - Joe Jeannette (5-0) UD6 Jim Miles (5-14-3) (jeannette fought as a begginner in this club fight)
MW - Jack Williams (5-0) UD6 Dick Moore (0-13-1) (williams fought as a beginner in this club fight)
WW - Billy Gardner (2-11-2) DRAW10 George McFadden (3-2-1) (mcfadden fought as a beginner and stepped up to WW for this club fight)
FW - Oscar Gardner (5-0) KO3 Lloyd Davies (TC) (0-1) (gardner fought as a beginner in this club fight)

Choynski Wins First Title Defense

Febuary 5, 1906

Joe Choynski (19-7) won his first title defense with a TKO8 over #4 Mike McCoole (8-8). McCoole, a surprising #4 ranked LHW, was overmatched from the start. He stayed close in the first two rounds then Choynski took over and punished him for the next 6 rounds.

McCoole never went down but was losing rounds by lopsided margins and was bleeding from a 5th round cut under his left eye when the bout was stopped late in the 8th.

Both Danny Wildhawke (ringside) and I had it 69-65 at the time of the stoppage.

On the undercard

LHW - Jack Sullivan (12-10-1) MD10 George Gardner (12-7-1)
FW - Marty McCue (5-8) UD10 Martin Flaherty (2-3-2)
WW - Tommy West (2-0) KO2 Eric Hill (TC) (0-1) (West fought as a beginner in this club fight)
BW - Billy Rotchford (3-3) UD6 Stuart Maxx (TC) (0-2) (Rotchford fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - Fred Crossley (8-12-1) TKO2 Con Coughlin (5-17) (club fight)

MH,
Hopefully lots of the fighters i am rating at the moment will be of use to you soon. I am going slowly back over the early middlweight champs and filling out their opponents. Once I get back to Tommy Ryan I will go onto other divisions of the era.
What do you feel needs fleshing out the most?

Enjoying the replay as ever btw.

I've been downloading your fighter packs ... they will help ... I have an abundance of heavyweights and every year I make a few fighters ... I like to add at least 4 fighters per division each year.

All I do is go through boxrec on the fighters I already have and look through their opponents and see if any of them are makeable. I don't spend much time making them, I just decide what overall rating I think they should be then make them that. No testing or anything which is why I haven't offered my fighters to anyone.

Off hand here are 5 guys that you could go through and make opponents for .... Didn't look at boxrec to tell if they are even worth doing but their years are good for me

FW - Jem Driscoll
BW - Terry McGovern
LW - Jack Blackburn
WW - Jack Britton
MW - Stanley Ketchel

Ok, Ketchel is coming up on the radar soon anyway and I will look at the other guys as well. They are all all time greats so they should have juicy opponent lists which could be added.
It will take some time but will get there in the end lol.

Thanks, that is why I suggested them because I figured they's have long opponent lists .... also because they went a good distance beyond my current year of 1906.

If there is any interest in my created fighters I'll send a file over to cornerwork, everyone would just need to remember I put less than 5% effort into rating them

Ryan Wins 9th Defense

Febuary 8th, 1906

Tommy Ryan (24-0) won his 9th title defense and stayed undefeated with a KO11 over #10 Paddy Duffy (7-11-3).

Ryan dominated the fight bloodying (sp) Duffy on several occasions and knocking him down 5 times before finally stopping him in the 11th.

I had him pitching a shutout and Tom Trunzo ringside had given Duffy one even round.

*** side note *** Ryan should of been scheduled for a NT contest Duffy was a bad pick coming off 3 straight loses. I'll be more careful next time

On the undercard

LW - Frank Erne (6-0-1) MD10 Young Otto (2-7-2) (Otto drops to the club ranks)
BW - Owen Moran (16-3-1) UD10 Charley Kelly (2-2-1)
LW - Charley White (1-0) MD6 Tommy Coleman (1-6) (White and Coleman fought as beginners in this club bout, Coleman drops the beginner tag and stays in the club ranks)
HW - Peter Maher (8-11-1) TKO4 Gunner White (1-8-1) (club bout)
HW - James Dalton (5-14-3) UD10 Charlie O' Donnell (5-13) (O'Donnell stepping up to HW for this club bout)

Gardner Wins A Close One

Febuary 12, 1906

Jimmy Gardner (13-8-2)withstood a late rally to win a SD15 over Rube Ferns (15-7) for the LBC welterweight crown.

Gardner used a solid middle portion of the fight to build a substansial lead then held on wil Ferns mounted a late comeback. Neither fighter went down and the only cut was a gash under the left eye of Gardner in the 5th. It was even after five then Gardner won the next 4 rounds.

Ferns woke up and seemingly won the final six rounds but several were very close.

I scored the bout even at 144-144. Ringside expert Danny Wildhawke had it 146-143 for Ferns. The official judges had it 144-143/143-144/144-143. Probabley the closest non-draw I've had.

On the undercard

FW - Tommy Sullivan (7-8-1) KO1 Harry Forbes (8-11-4) (Forbes stepped up to FW for the fight)
HW - Mick Dooley (4-15-1) TKO5 Peter Courtney (0-1) (quick stoppage on a cut, Courtney fought as a beginner in this club fight)
LW - Jack Daly (2-0) SD6 Eddie Hanlon (0-1) (both fighters as beginners in this club fight)
*** usually like to avoid 2 beginners fighting each other but it was unavoidable this time, otherwise both would of fought a superior fighter ****
HW - Martin Neary (6-10) MD10 Jack Stelzner (9-14-2) (club fight)
LHW - Dan Dwyer (8-11) UD10 Jim Jeffords (2-8) (club fight)

Lavigne Wins Title In Controversial Bout

February 17, 1906

George Lavigne (17-6-1) won a controversial TKO5 over Billy Meyer (17-3-3) for the LBC Lightweight title.

Meyer dominated the first four rounds even dropping Lavigne in the 4th. Lavigne hurt Meyer early in the 5th and continued pounding away while Meyer leaned against the ropes. Referee Frank Cappacino stopped the bout with 3 seconds left in the round. Meyer immediately jumped at the ref argueing the stoppage. His reaction proved he wasn't hurt at all just weathering the storm.

All sorts of things were thrown into the ring from the crowd who was chanting bull**** as loud as they could. The police had to escort Cappacino from the ring admist a melee between the two fighters corners.

It is almost certain the officials at the LBC office will demand a rematch.

On the undercard

HW - Mike Brennan (9-12) UD10 Joe Goss (8-1-1) (huge upset)
LHW - James Barry (1-0) SD6 Fred Robinson (5-13-4) (Barry fought as a beginner in this club bout)
FW - Kid Broad (4-1) UD6 Fred Baxter (TC) (0-1) (Broad fought as a beginner in this club bout)
HW - Henry Higgans (5-13) TKO8 Tom Hinch (5-14) (club bout)
MW - George Fulijames (9-13) UD10 Denny Kelliher (8-13-3) (club fight)

Herrera Wins Tough Match

February 26, 1906

Aurelio Herrera (9-2) won an UD10 over cagey veteran Joe Bowker (10-12-6). Bowker stepping up to FW for this bout didn't seem to lose an of his ability.

It was a fight with alot of close rounds. At least 4 rounds were with 2 points of each other. Herrera suffered a cut on his mouth in the first round, but still took the round. Herrera dropped Bowker for a 6 count in the 3rd. Bowker's nose started bleeding in the 8th.

I had the fight 98-94 Herrera. I have a tendancy to call rounds even though. Christopher Almodovar at ringside had it 98-92. The official judges had it 97-92/98-92/97-92.

On the undercard

MW - Jack Britton (5-1) UD10 Edward Rollins (10-13) (Britton stepping up to MW for this win)
MW - Bob Moha (1-0) KO2 Gary Tyler (TC) (0-1) (Moha fought as a beginner in this club fight)
BW - Kid Murphy (1-0) KO1 Mark French (0-1) (TC) (Murphy fought as a beginner in this club fight)
LHW - Jack Beauscholte (3-1-1) UD6 Burt Duty (TC) (0-1) (Beauscholte fought as a beginner in this club fight)
FW - Billy Whistler (4-9-1) SD10 Joe Bernstein (4-10-1) (club fight)

March 1906

114 fighters in action

Only 3 champions in action all in title fights

LBC HW - Mitchell vs. #8 Nick Burley (10-2) ranked 8th ... will be a heavy underdog but is deserving of the shot

LBA MW - Fitzsimmons vs. #1 Jack Dempsey NP (24-2) only 2 loses came to Fitz in title fights, hoping the 3rd time is the charm

LBA FW - Lyons vs. #2 Young Griffo (19-4-2) Lyons passed over #1 Attell who is in action this month in favor of Griffo. Lyons is 2-2 vs. Attell and 0-2 against Griffo so it seemed Griffo was more deserving of the shot.

I keep thinking that also but in March of 1902, Fitz won by TKO8 and in April of 1904, Fitz won by TKO14.
