Title Bouts

BW - George Dixon (CH) (37-11-1) successfully defended his WBC BW title for the 2nd time with a TKO10 over Jimmy Barry (13/14) (20-5).

Dixon dominated the fight except for the 4th round. Barry's left eye started swelling in the first round and he went into KO mode. He almost got it in the 4th when he dropped the champ twice but couldn't finish him. Dixon picked him apart the rest of the way until the eye was completely shut and the fight was stopped in the 10th.

I had it 87-82 at the stoppage.

HW - Frank Mantell (31/19) (23-8) scored an easy UD12 over Paul Samson-Korner (20/31) (20-4) (pre) to win the EBU HW title. Mantell should have never been in the fight due to already having 30 pro fights, but an oversight by the commissioner will allow the fight to stand.

Mantell was too experienced for Samson-K and won easily. I had it 118-110, the official judges had it 118-110/118-111/117-111.

Other fights

LH - Jack Beauscholte (club) (12-17-3) SD8 Frank Farmer (UR) (7-1-1) 76-75 Beauscholte (farmer at pre for this club fight)

WW - Mike Glover (22/15) SD10 Joe Walcott (9/16) (28-17-7)

Title Bout

HW - Sam Langford (CH) (36-6-2) stretched his win streak to 16 straight wins and with the TKO9 victory over Henry Pearce (4/5) (20-2) it is his 10th straight stoppage win. Langford only defended the IBF portion of his title in this fight and it was his 5th defense of it. Pearce's CBU crown was not on the line.

The fight started out bad for Pearce and never got better. His right eye started swelling early in the first and then he was cut under it in the 3rd. The swelling eventually stopped the fight.

I had it 79-73 at the stoppage. Pearce will be out until December when he will defend his IBO Title.

Title Tourney

LHW - Fred Russell (4/4) (23-9) battered John Wille (9/10) (22-7-1) in route to a UD12 in the first round of the LHW WBA title tourney. Russell was cut under the left eye in the 3rd but knocked Wille down in the 6th, 11th and 12th. I had it 118-109, while the official judges saw it 117-109/117-108/117-108. Three of Wille's seven losses are to Russell.

Other Fights

MW - Jack McCarron (18/16) (16-0-1) MD10 Teddy Neary (40/44) (14-4-1) 96-94 (both at pre)

WW - Joe Gans (4/4) (38-6-3) KO6 Tom Tracey (UR/69) (10-5) (tracey at pre)

LW - Maurice Hagerstrom (UR) (8-0-1) UD8 Bill Crane (club) (3-11-4) 77-75 (both at pre in this club fight)

HW - Larry Foley (5/4) (33-9-3) UD10 Ned Kelly (149/club) (10-15-1) (Foley has 8 straight wins now, Kelly drops to club)

Langford is really rolling along, thought Pearce would give him a little more trouble than he did.

Sounds like the Dixon/Barry Fight had some exciting moments. Would love to see a rematch.

Incredible MW unification fight

September 5, 1912

Title Fight

MW - Frank Klaus (CH) (27-6-1) survived a late rally by Stanley Ketchel (CH/2) (33-9) to retain the WBA MW title and win the WBC MW title by SD15.

Ketchel dominated the early portion of the fight but had some swelling of his right eye. Klaus started to take over in the 8th as he dominated the next few rounds. Ketchel's eye was completely shut the second half of the fight (Maroon). Klaus dropped Ketchel in the 12th. Ketchel rallied to win the 13th and the 14th was anybody's round. Ketchel dropped Klaus twice in the 15th and thought he had done enough to win.

I had it 142-141 for Ketchel, the official scorers had it 142-140/140-142/140-141. Ketchel was the victim of some questionable scoring. In the 8th all three judges gave Klaus a 10-8 round despite no knockdowns. (I did too but surprised all 3 judges did). The judge who scored it 141-140 also called the 12th a 10-7 round despite Ketchel losing the round 28-10 and being down only once.

Title Tourney

MW - William Sheriff (7/4) (17-0) (pre) defeated Eddie McGoorty (14/23) (27-5-1) by TKO2. McGoorty broke his hand in the second round and couldn't continue.

Other fights

MW - Albert Crouse (UR) (10-0) UD8 Johnny Matheson (UR) (7-2) 79-71 (both at pre for this club fight, Crouse moved to main)

LW - Frank Erne (6/5) (24-9-2) MD10 Young Joseph (74/82) (13-17-5)

FW - Ben Jordan (54/49) (17-7-4) UD10 Jack Pearson (74/93) (12-15-2)

MW - Johnny Reagan (29/22) (20-2-1) KO7 Jack Nelson (65/79) (18-9-1)

Title Fights

LW - Abe Attell (CH) (39-12-3) scored a SD15 over Harry Lyons (8/10) (36-19-1) for his first defense of the WBA LW title. It was the 6th time the two have met and they are 3-3 now.

Attell built a big lead early, then held on despite a big rally by Lyons late in the fight. There were no knockdowns or cuts. I had it 143-143, the official judges saw it 143-141/141-144/143-141. Lyons was penalized a point in the 4th for hitting behind the head.

BW - Harry Tenney (8/CH) (25-7-3) survived a late scare to win a UD15 over Terry Edwards (CH/9) (15-1-2) to win the IBF BW title.

Tenney dominated the fight scoring a knockdown in the first round. He was cruising until he got caught and dropped twice in the 13th. Edwards didn't have enough left to finish him off though. Tenney knocked Edwards down in the 14th and won the UD. I had it 145-137 as did two of the official judges, the third saw it 145-136.

Other fights

LHW - Harry Wuest (UR) (10-0) KO5 Joe Craig (club) (9-17-1) 38-38 (wuest at pre in this club fight, moved to main)

LW - Ad Wolgast (56/36) (21-11) UD10 Gus Brown (22/37) (19-5-3)

BW - Harry Harris (13/12) (21-2-1) TKO8 Joe Wagner (41/44) (19-19)

MW - Billy McCarthy (19/16) (33-16-4) UD10 Jack Moffat (73/80) (14-16-3)

Yanger gets his revenge

September 12, 1912

Title Fight

FW - Benny Yanger (14/CH) (25-4) one month after being disqualified in the first round came back to win an easy UD15 over Oscar Gardner (CH/5) (26-7-1).

Yanger won the first nine rounds including knocking Gardner down in the 4th, then pretty much just stayed away from the champ the rest of the way. I had it 146-138, while the official judges had it 148-136/145-139/146-138.

Other fights

HW - Tom Sharkey (7/4) (39-15-1) TKO5 Frank Slavin (72/84)(30-19-1) (Sharkey at post)

MW - Gus Platts (UR) (8-0-1) UD8 Billy Leedam (UR) (9-3-1) 80-76 (both at pre in this club fight .... yes I had 4 rounds even)

FW - Todo Moran (UR) (9-0-2) DRAW8 Billy Ross (club) (10-16-3) 76-75 Moran (Moran at pre in this club fight)

HW - Dominic McCaffrey (26/15) (37-13-3) KO6 Denver Ed Smith (62/74) (26-23-2) (Smith at post)

MW - George Robinson (UR) (10-1) UD8 Charley Johnson (club) (12-17-2) (Robinson at pre in this club fight ... moved to main)

Title Fight

FLY - Johnny Hughes (1/CH) (19-4-6) became the first two-time FLY champ with a DQ14 win over Sid Smith (CH/7) (18-8-2). Hughes recaptures the WBA FLY title that he lost to Charlie Hayes. Considering Hughes (rated 7) has lost twice to Hayes (4), Hayes may be his mandatory challenger.

Hughes dominated this fight and Smith seemed to foul just to get out of it. He was penalized twice before being DQ'd. Smith was winning some rounds but had been down in the 3rd and the 6th. I had it 124-120 at the stoppage and Smith had lost that previous 3 rounds.

Title Tourney fight

MW - Billy Papke (2/2) (27-5) shook off a lackluster performance in time to win a UD12 over Jimmy Murray (17/19) (17-5-1) in the first round of the WBO title tourney.

Papke and Murray were even after 8 but Papke won the next few rounds including dropping Murray in the 11th to take the fight.

I had it 115-112 as did two official judges while the third had it 114-112.

Other Fights

WW - Art Magirl (UR) (9-0) KO6 Otto Sieloff (club) (10-28-3) 50-44 (magirl was at pre, sieloff at post for this club fight ... all 9 of Magirl's wins have been by KO)

BW - Jimmy Gorman (28/25) (21-3-1) TKO8 Dave Ross (54/59) (14-12-1)

Possibly the best fight card in LBA History

Definitely the best round in LBA history

September 18, 1912

Title Fight

LHW - Bob Fitzsimmons (17/CH) (41-5) completed his comeback with a TKO13 over Charles McCoy (CH/7) (35-11-3) to win the IBF LHW title in a fight that had fight of the year (maybe decade) written all over it.

A close fight through the first five rounds as Fitzsimmons was cut over the right eye in the 2nd. Fitz started to take over in the 6th, cutting McCoy over the left eye. Fitz dropped McCoy in the 7th and the 8th but lost the 9th as his cut was reopened.

Fitz controlled the 10th and the 11th, but his cut was reopened again in the 11th. Then came the 12th round .....

Fitz was dropped early in the round and barely beat the count. McCoy threw everything at him building a 22-2 point lead and reopening the cut. Then Fitz out of nowhere dropped McCoy with 1 minute left in the round. Fitz then battered McCoy reopening McCoy's cut and cutting his lip. Fitz dropped McCoy again late in the round. Once again McCoy beat the count.

Fitz then dropped McCoy early in the 13th and although he beat the count the ref stopped the fight seconds later. I had it 117-108 at the stoppage but that doesn't show how close Fitz was to losing this fight.

Title Tourney

MW - No way did I think the main event would top this one ... Jeff Clarke (6/4) (22-3) won a hard fought SD12 over Young Mitchell (5/8) (19-2) to advance to the second round of the WBO MW tourney but he paid a price.

Mitchell couldn't seem to put enough together to win rounds but everytime he hit Clarke he hurt him. Mitchell went down in the second but popped right back up. Mitchell then dropped Clarke twice in the 5th. Problem was that Clarke was winning rounds.

Clarke was cut over the left eye in the 9th and under it in the 10th. But he held on to take the victory. I had it 114-112 for Clarke, the official judges saw it 114-112/112-114/114-111.

Other Fights

LW - Benny Leonard (UR) (8-0) UD8 Mark Higgans (club) (4-14-3) 80-72 (leonard at pre for this club fight)

BW - Frankie Burns (15/14) (22-5-1) UD10 Harry Dally (29/33) (18-8-1)

WW - Willie Schaeffer (20/8) (22-4) TKO8 Charley Hitte (3/9) (27-13) 67-66 Hitte (Hitte breaks his hand)

LW - Young Erne (74/77) (20-10-1) DRAW10 Tom Dunn (116/114) (12-11-1) (y. erne has to be one of the worst 9 rated fighters in the universe)

Fitz caught a break to get the title match. With Dillon losing and having to vacate the title that was not on the line, 8 top ranked guys are inolved in a tourney. Fitz was the highest ranked guy left.

Wuest and Crouse are still basically fighting TC's. Wuest will not amount to much but he does have power. Crouse is a definite prospect he is 9 rated and has power and defense. Should be a future champ.

Title Fights

LW - Young Griffo (CH) (40-8-7) eeks out a SD15 win over Jack McAuliffe (CH/1) (43-8-2) (post) to unify 3 of the 4 World LW titles. Griffo defended his WBC belt for the 4th time, his IBF belt for the 3rd time and won McAuliffe's WBO belt. Abe Attell has the WBA belt.

A close fight the whole way and many at ringside felt McAuliffe won the fight. Griffo was down in the 10 and was swelling around both eyes. But Griffo won most of the middle rounds and four of the last five.

I had it 144-141 Griffo, the official judges had it 142-141/142-143/144-141.

BW - Charles Ledoux (13/11) (20-2) cruised to a UD12 over Charles Goldman (17/20) (19-7-1) for his second defense of his EBU BW title.

Ledoux knocked Goldman down in the first and pretty much controlled the action the rest of the way. Ledoux was cut in the 5th but his corner kept it closed until the final round. I had it 117-111 as did all of the official judges.

Other Fights

MW - Johnny Wilson (UR) (10-0) UD8 Eddie Moha (9-3-1) 80-72 (both at pre for this club fight, Wilson moved to main)

BW - Rochester Tommy Dixon (UR) (11-0) KO10 Young Johnson (62/64) 86-85 Dixon (dixon at pre)

LW - Bobby Dobbs (19/19) (18-0) KO10 Whitey Lester (124/124) (9-12) 90-81 (both at pre)

MW - Kid Locke (46/46) (18-7-1) DRAW10 Jack Williams (61/60) (19-12-4)
