Mitchell Gets Off Canvas For First Defense

March 2, 1906

Charley Mitchell (19-4) picked himself up from a 3rd round knockdown to win a TKO12 over #8 Nick Burley (10-3).

A close bout that see-sawed ended when Mitchell had Burley nearly out on the ropes in the 12th after 2 knockdowns during the round.

Burley put Mitchell down in the 3rd and was ahead on scorecards after 5.

Mitchell then dropped Burley in the 6th, cut Burley under his right eye in the 7th, and caused swelling in his left eye in the 9th.

I had it 104-103 at the time of the stoppage. Ringside expert Mirco Mizera had it 105-102. The official judges all had it 104-103.

On the undercard

HW - Frank Childs (15-10-2) UD10 Ed Dunkhorst (12-11-2)
LHW - Morris Harris (3-6) SD10 Jack Graham (5-1)
HW - Oliver Williams (1-0-1) DRAW Joe Godfrey (2-17-2) (Williams fought as a beginner in this club fight)
LHW - Harry Baker (1-3-2) DRAW Kiernan Wibert (TC) (0-1-1) (Baker fought as a beginner in this club bout)
LHW - JH Brown (6-12) UD10 Duncan McDonald (6-13-1) (club fight)

The One Punch That Changed Middleweight History

March 14th, 1906

Jack Dempsey (25-2) stunned the boxing world with one punch that ended Bob Fitzsimmons (19-2) reign as middleweight champ. Dempsey scored a TKO6 over the champ to win the LBA Title.

But back to the one punch .... This fight started like it was going to be another disappointing setback in Dempsey's career. It appeared that he took a thumb in the eye in the first round and his left eye immediately started swelling. Fitz took advantage of the situation and pummelled Dempsey through the first 5 rounds. Fitz landing shot after shot with Dempsey getting a whole lot of air on his swings.

At the end of 5 both me and the ringside expert had it 50-45. Just :43 seconds into round 6 though Dempsey hit Fitz under the rib cage (ala Hopkins-DeLaHoya) and dropped the Champ. Fitz struggled to his feet and beat the count at 9. Fitz was clearly still hurt and Dempsey jumped all over him. Jack landed blow after blow until referee Abe Goldstein finally stopped the fight with a little less than a minute remaining.

Fitz, always the gracious champion, said after the fight "Jack caught me with a helluva shot and I just couldn't get my breath. If I could of gotten out of the round I'd of been alright, but to Jack's credit he didn't let me out of the round."

On the undercard

LW - Eddie Connelly (7-0) UD10 Sam Bolen (4-5-1)
HW - George Godfrey (14-9-1) UD10 Bob Armstrong (18-7-2)
MW - Jack Williams (6-0) KO1 Jimmy Handler (Williams fought pre-prime in this club fight)
LW - Ad Wolgast (2-0) UD6 Billy Frazier (9-15-1) (Wolgast fought as a beginner in this club fight, had to drop Frazier in the 6th to win the decision)
BW - Digger Stanley (10-12-3) UD10 Maxey Haugh (3-11) (club fight)

He is ranked #1 in the LBC rankings but there isn't enough fighters to warrant a LBC belt yet ... There will be in 1907, so if he doesn't drop a fight his shot will come at the beginning of 1907.

Young Griffo Finally Wins Title

March 26, 1906

Young Griffo (20-4-2) finally won the LBA Featherweight title on his 4th try with a MD15 win over champ Harry Lyons (18-9).

Griffo boxed his way to the win, never willing to mix it up. Lyons would hurt Griffo most of the time he landed but couldn't put together enough punches in enough rounds to win. This was his 3rd loss to Griffo.

Griffo's left eye started swelling a bit in the 7th but other than that there were no knockdowns or cuts in the fight.

On the undercard

BW - Johnny Coulon (7-0) KO9 Kid Bebee (0-5) (Coulon goes to Prime and Bebee drops to the club ranks)
MW - Jim Hall (10-11-2) TKO6 Frank Klaus (6-2-1)
WW - Kid Graves (1-0) TKO3 Drazen Basic (0-1) (TC) (Graves fought as a beginner in this club fight)
FW - Billy O'Donnell (1-0) TKO2 Kurt Hallen (0-1) (TC) (O'Donnell fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - Pat Kieley (9-12-1) MD10 Sandy Feguson (9-14-1) (club fight)

April will be a slow month for title fights with only 2 on tap

HW - Jack Johnson vs. #3 Tom Sharkey (Sharkey with 14 ko's has a puncher's chance)
LW - Joe Gans vs. #4 Jem Carney

Jack O'Brien is fighting a HW in a Non-Title bout

Are you still using the same "rules" for fighters moving up in weight?

Actually it got a little hard to keep track of so fighters are staying in their weight class for now ... With as many fighters as I have trying to keep track of who was attempting to move up got me lost.

Plus I wasn't real sure how to adjust them when they moved up. I haven't seen any rules that I was comfortable with. Any suggestions?

No I have not much of an idea for a blanket alterations for change in weight class. I was thinking about it for one of my universes but didn't come up with anything I was particularly happy with. The system I started with was when a fighter moved up a division (a real division, not Jr Fly to Fly for example) there is a chance that their CF, HP and Chin ratings. I rolled a 6 sided dice, on a 1-2 the rating got worse by 2 points, 3-5 got worse by one point and on a 6 it stayed the same. Of course you have to adjust the 3pt puches to match the new HP rating.

Best I have come up with...

Mark

Yeah I don't like the blanket alterations wither .... I'll probabley leave it alone until I get to the point where there ar jr. classes .... hopefully by then someone will have come up with a good system or TBCB2 will handle it somehow.

OH and just in case no one has mentioned it lately great job on your site
