February starts with an upset!

February 1, 1913

Title Fight

FW - (WBC) Percy Cove (20/CH) (24-6-2) scored a relatively easy UD15 over Cal McCarthy (CH/5) (27-7) to win the WBC FW title. Cove simply outboxed McCarthy. He stayed outside, fought defensively, and won convincingly. The official scores were 145-139/145-139/144-140. McCarthy was penalized a point in the 2nd and the 15th.

Other Fights

HW - Mike Schreck (64/49) (30-19) DQ8 John Sullivan (56/77) (41-12) Schreck down 3 times but wins .. one time champ Sullivan now 77th!!!! and still PRIME!!!!

WW - Mike Glover (16/13) (25-2-3) TKO10 Jimmy Gardner (52/58) (24-22-3) 87-84 (gardner at post)

Bad month for champs 0-3 so far

February 6, 1913

Title Fights

WW - (EBU) The writing was on the wall for Terry Martin (5/14) (25-7-1) when he decided to try and foul his way to victory ... it didn't work as the ref DQ'd him in the 7th to give Dick Nelson (29/13) (21-8) the EBU WW title.

Nelson had already dropped Martin twice and Martin was exhausted. His third foul of the 7th round was enough to be DQ'd. I had it 58-56 Nelson at the stoppage. Martin will leave the EBU with the loss (more than 30 fights).

FW - (CBU) Young Pluto (28/21) (24-4) scored a KO10 over Fred Johnson (21/30) (22-6-1) to win the CBU FW title. It was the second time Pluto has beaten Johnson.

Johnson was hanging in there despite being dropped in the 8th until he was dropped for good in the 10th. I had it 86-84 Pluto and Johnson was winning the 10th.

Other Fights

FLY - Percy Jones (UR) (11-1) KO3 Sid Smith (8/11) (18-9-2) (Jones at pre)

MW - Joe Borrell (UR) (13-0) KO6 Martin Mulverhill (80/91) (12-13-2) 48-47 Borrell (Borrell at pre)

LW - George Dawson (UR) (14-0) UD10 Dave Wallace (121/club) (13-18) 98-92 (Dawson at pre) Wallace drops to club

FW - Kid Landfield (25/19) (18-17-3) UD10 Johnny Marto (98/99) (12-6-2) Landfield keeps hanging around the top 20 ... Marto has been a disappointment

A new rule for me in the LBA ... it will be up to my discretion whether undefeated fighters take a title fight (regional or world) if they have the opportunity. Too many undefeated fighters are losing regional title matches. I like to protect the undefeated fighters in my uni. Once the become prime though all hand holding is off.

Also I'm thinking of keeping the 30 year thing going and adding 2002 and 2003 fighters at the end of this month.

February 7th, 1913 *** forgot to write down their beginning rank so unfortunately only their end rank will be in () ***

Title Fight

LW - (NABF) Kid Fredericks (10) (19-2-2) scored a KO8 over Lockport Jimmy Duffy (29) (19-3-2) for his 5th defense of the NABF title. Fredericks controlled much of the fight losing only one round. Duffy was having his best round (up 20-3 in points) when he was KO'd. I had it 69-65 at the stoppage.

Other Fights

HW - Jack O'Brien (14) (32-8-2) TKO4 John Morrissey (32) (16-7)

WW - Matt Wells (30) (20-3-1) UD10 Charley Hitte (25) (27-14) (Hitte at post)

BW - Joe Russell (50) (10-6-1) MD10 Rochester Tommy Dixon (UR/46) (13-1-1) 96-94 (both at pre)

MW - Les Darcy (10) (18-0) SD10 Young Kid Broad (26) (19-6-2) 94-93 Darcy (Darcy at pre, moves to prime) Darcy in his toughest test was down in the 5th and exhausted after 6 ... Broad lost a point due to a foul

WW - Mick Dunn (UR) (10-0) KO7 Martin Reilly (UR) (8-4) 59-55 (both at pre for this club fight, Dunn moves to main)

Okay let's face it at the pace I am going I doubt I will ever get to the 90's ... so just to keep it entertaining for me I am going to add 1992 & 1993 boxers at the end of this month.

At the end of the year I will add 1914, 1944, 1974, & 1994. If I ever get to a point where I am at 1932 and I need to add the 1992 fighters again I will figure something out at that point. I want to see some newer fighters. Plus because it is my uni and I don't think I will ever get to 1968, Alexis Arguello will be joining the universe soon.

I have a couple of days to think it over but I think this is what I am going to do. Going to try and figure out a work around also because importing the fighters from on-line caused my titles to go away and it was a pain to put them back.

Herrera disappoints yet again

February 8, 1913

Title Fight

MW - (WBC) George Gunther (CH) (24-6-1) took advantage of an easy defense and scored a KO11 over Charley Davis (9/16) (16-1-1) (pre) for his first defense of the WBC MW title.

After a lackluster first few rounds Gunther stepped it up dropping Davis in the 9th, 10th and 11th. I had it 97-91 at the stoppage.

Title Tourney

LW - (IBF Second Round) Young Corbett (5/3) (33-18-4) scored a TKO11 over Aurelio Herrera (12/17WW) (26-13) to move onto the title fight in May. Herrera was winning the fight (97-95 on my card) but was foiled by a cut. Both fighters were cut over the right eye in the 8th but Corbett's corner did a better job. Herrera's cut was reopened twice before the doc stopped it. Corbett was down in the 9th.

Herrera will move to WW now. His stats dropped some and he is now an 8 overall. He has lost 4 of his last 6 fights.

Other Fights

HW - Jack Fallon (UR) (13-0-1) UD10 Ben Knutsen (137/144) (9-9-2) 100-90 (both at pre)

WW - Eddie Shevlin (41/36) (18-2-1) TKO8 Jimmy Clabby (55/63) (11-14-8) 68-66 Clabby

FW - Brooklyn Tommy Sullivan (45/34) (25-16-4) TKO8 Tommy Connolly (83/92) (17-14-1) (Sullivan at post)

HW - Dick Gilbert (UR) (7-0-1) MD8 Sailor White (UR) (5-4-1) 78-74

Another Champ bites the dust

February 14, 1913

Title Fight

IBF - (WW) Jack Blackburn (3/CH) (35-13-6) wins a title in his second weight class by scoring an easy UD15 over Young Peter Jackson (CH/3) (29-9-2). Blackburn takes the IBF WW title. There were no knockdowns or cuts in this fight, just a dominating performance by Blackburn. Scores were 147-138/148-138/149-138.

Other Fights

HW - Tom Sharkey (8/6) (40-16-1) KO2 Peter Courtney (45/57) (22-8-1) 10-9 Sharkey (Sharkey at post) Sharkey now has 89 career knockdowns ... no stat for that on the stat page but I have to think it is leading the LBA. He might go down as the greatest fighter never to win a title.

WW - Andy Watson (62/46) (16-9-4) KO7 Mike Sullivan (32/47) (26-21-4) (sullivan at post)

BW - Kid Williams (23/21) (15-2) UD10 Billy James (64/65) (15-13-4) (williams at pre)

MW - Eddie McGoorty (23/17) (28-5-1) TKO10 Tommy Cleary (68/74) (16-10-1)

LW - Danny Duane (35/34) (21-14-5) SD10 Jabez White (118/119) (11-15-1)

Back where he belongs

February 15, 1913

Title Fight

LH - (WBA) Jack Dillon (1/CH) (29-1) dominated Fred Russell (2/1) (24-10) to win the vacant WBA LHW title by UD15. The title was vacated when Dillon lost the WBC title to Dempsey. This was prior to the rule which would of allowed him to keep the WBA title through the tourney.

Dillon dominated the fight and dropped Russell in the 15th. The scores were 149-137/149-136/145-139.

Title Tourney

MW - (WBA - second round) Al McCoy (6/4) (19-1) pulled a shocker in winning a UD12 over Stanley Ketchel (1/5) (34-10). Ketchel went down 3 times in the 7th but was rallying late. Many believe that if the fight had gone 15, Ketchel would have won. The scores were 115-110/115-110/113-112. McCoy will battle the winner between Denny Harrington (current champ) and Young Mitchell.

Other Fights

BW - Al Delmont (11/8) (28-12-3) UD10 Hank Brennan (42/46) (18-11-1)

LW - Jem Carney (37/39) (30-19-1) DRAW10 Kid Black (84/83) (15-11-3) (Carney at post)

HW - Larry Foley (7/8) (33-10-4) DRAW10 Jack Lester (69/64) (22-5-2)

MW - Cyclone Johnny Thompson (UR) (8-1) TKO7 Johnny Matheson (UR) (7-4) (both at pre in this club fight)

Jess Willard (14-1) moves to prime after 15 fights ... this is the earliest a fighter can in the LBA and Willard is the first I can recall doing it.

Title Fight

HW - (EBU) Frank Mantell (19/10) (25-8) got up off the canvas to score a KO8 over Otto Flint (UR) (11-1) for his first defense of the EBU HW title. Flint looked ready to shock the world with a strong start to the fight. He won the first couple of rounds and dropped Mantell in the second.

Mantell did not look sharp but finally caught Flint in the 8th. I had it 67-66 Flint at the stoppage.

Other Fights

WW - Charles Gleason (36/18) (20-5) KO3 George Lavigne (6/19) (33-17-2) 20-18 Lavigne nice size upset!

HW - Jess Willard (UR/31) (14-1) KO7 J Barrington (91/109) (10-13-1) (both at pre) Willard only loss was by DQ

LW - Charley White (23/20) (21-10-4) KO10 Sid Stagg (109/110) (11-7) (stagg at pre)

HW - Mike Comiskey (UR) (12-0) KO1 Bill Chase (UR/66) (11-2-2) NA (both at pre)

LW - Jewey Cooke (26/22) (21-11-3) SD10 Jack Dougherty (98/106) (12-13-5)

Sid Stagg (11-7) has decided to retire following the beating he took in the ring on the 20th. Lasting injuries have caused his doctors to advise he never fight again. When reached for a comment Sid said "I like pudding"

Title Fight

FW - (IBF) Solly Smith (CH) (29-17-4) scored a KO2 over Frank Robson (13/16) (21-3-6) for his first defense of his IBF FW title. Close first round won by Smith (10-9 Smith), followed by quick KO in the second.

Title Tourney

LH - (WBC - First Round) Bob McAllister (4/2) (22-4) scored a KO3 over Seaman Johnson (10/17) (18-7) to advance to the second round of the tourney. Neither fighters regional title was on the line. Johnson had a good first two rounds and may have gotten too confident. I had it 20-19 Johnson at the stoppage.

Other Fights

MW - Rube Ferns (20/10) (32-15-1) TKO7 Paddy Purtell (39/46) (17-19) nice ranking jump
