Sullivan Wins Title In 2nd Try

December 11th, 1906

#4 John L. Sullivan (23-5) scored a KO12 over Champ James Jeffries (26-3) to win the LBF Heavyweight title.

Neither fighter came in with a defensive plan as the both started dropping bombs in round 1. It went back and forth with Jeffries getting the edge winning back to back rounds in the 5th and 6th. Sullivan started carrying his hands low in the 5th.

Sullivan came back strong winning the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Jeffries right eye began to swell in the 8th. Jeffries won roun 10, then got dropped in the 11th.

Jeffries appeared groggy coming out of his corner for the 12th and Sullivan jumped on him. Dropping him twice, the second time for good. Jeffries went down 3 times in this fight, he had only been down twice in his previous 28 fights.

I had it 105-103 Sullivan at the time of the KO. Jeffries landed 52% of his punches and Sullivan 60%. No defense at all.

On the undercard

HW - Billy Wilson (12-11-1) TKO3 Jack Sullivan (12-13-1) (Sullivan moved up to HW for this loss)
MW - Dan Creedon (17-8) TKO5 John P. Clow (12-15)
WW - Jimmy Clabby (5-0-1) UD8 Michael Sweezey (TC) (0-5) (Clabby fought pre-prime in this club fight)
FW - Gil Goulette (4-11-1) KO2 Billy O'Donnell (5-1-1) (O'Donnell fought pre-prime in this club fight)
HW - Morris Grant (11-11-5) SD10 Pat Kieley (10-13-1) (club fight)

Gans Survives Against Mcauliffe

December 17, 1906

Joe Gans (23-1-2) retained his LBA Lightweight title with a DRAW15 against #9 Jack McAuliffe (21-4-2).

Gans got off to a slow start and appeared to be on his way to losing his title.
After 9 rounds I had it 87-85 in favor of McAuliffe. Then Gans got hot and won the next five rounds. Battling through a left eye that started swelling in the 3rd.

McAullife sensing he was losing came out strong in the 15th, dropping Gans and then pummeling the champ on the ropes until the round ended. Many in the crowd thought the knockdown was enought to unseat the champion. Everyone saw the fight differently.

I had 143-142 Gans. Tom Trunzo ringside had it 143-142 McAuliffe. The official judges had it 144-141 Gans/143-143/ and 145-140 McAuliffe.

Gans just laughed when asked about a rematch after the fight.

On the undercard

LW - Will Curley (8-1) TKO10 Patsy Sweeney (Curley stepping up to LW for this win)
HW - Peter Courtney (4-1) UD6 Henry Higgans (6-15) (Courtney fought as a beginner in this club fight)
LW - Charley White (4-1) UD6 Sean McCann (TC) (0-6) (White fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - Tony Ross (6-4) UD8 Joe Hess (1-20) ( Ross fought pre-prime for this club fight)
HW - Tom Hinch (5-14-2) DRAW10 Chris Pearson (2-9-1) (Pearson fought as a HW in this club fight)

Dixon Wins Snoozefest In First Defense

December 23rd, 1906

George Dixon (19-5) won a UD15 over #3 Casper Leon (11-9-4) to retain his LBA Bantamweight title.

A boring fight with lots of boos was dominated by Dixon. Dixon was cut on the lip in the 3rd round, otherwise there were no cuts or knockdowns.

I had it 146-140. Christopher Almodovar ringside had it 145-141. The officials judges saw it 146-140/145-143/145-141.

On the undercard

HW - Ed Dunkhorst (15-12-2) UD10 Bill Farnam (9-13-1)
MW - Frank Klaus (8-2-1) UD10 Arthur Cripps (7-2)
FW - Ben Jordan (4-0) TKO5 Kurt Hallen (TC) (0-4) (Jordan fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - Peter Maher (11-11-1) KO8 Syd Hughes (4-7-1) (club fight)
MW - Denny Kelliher (9-14-1) KO7 Jimmy Handler (0-9-2)

I rank fighters in different categories ... wins, win%, stop%, avg. connect %, avg low connect %, pp, avg rank.

so for example ... the fighter with most wins gets 1 point all the way through the 15th ranked gets 15 points. I do that for the first 3 categories any fighter ranked in the top 15 for any of the first 3 categories gets on the board. If they aren't in the top 15 then they get 20 points.

With me so far? then I go through the connect % and rank them 1-15 for only fighters that have scored so far. I usually end up with a list of 25 or so fighters. Then I take their 1-15 rank in performance points. Then i take their avg. rank in the 3 organizations and add that to the totals. If they are a champion the get -5. Then if they are undefeated they get -10.

so for example take two fighters in my p4p.

T. Ryan he was 2nd, in wins, 1st in win %, 6th in stop %. Then of the fighters on the board he was 15th in connect % and 9th in low connect %. He ranked 1st in performance points. So at that point he had 34 points. He lost 5 for being a champ and lost 10 for being undefeated for a total of 19.

HW Peter Jackson ranked 6th in wins, 12th in win %, wasn't in the top 15 for stop so he got 20. He was 1st of the remaining fighters in connect %, unranked in low connect % (20points) unranked in PP (20 points). His average rank was 4th. So that's a total of 83 points.

Not real scientific but it works for me.

Just a quick note ... thanks to all the guys making fighters (I think thanks ...LOL) I now have 553 fighters in my universe.

Because of that each month will be divided into two phases ... club and main division. I do all the club fights first and list any notable i.e. fighters moving up or retiring. Then I'll do the main class and still list all the championship cards.

11 club cards done ... I have to fast sim these now, but I will probabley go back to fighting beginners that are 3-0 are above. The only significant move was

MW- Joe Thomas (7-0) UD10 Frank Glover (9-14) (win moves Thomas to prime and up to the main division)
