August 2, 1908

Peter Jackson (28-5) scored a TKO14 over #3 James Corbett (25-8-2) to wind his 2nd LBF title defense.

Jackson needed a KO or TKO to win this fight as Corbett pretty much put the fight out of reach in the 12th.

Corbett came out in his usual boring style and boxed his way to a 4 round to 0 lead early in the fight. Jackson then took command of the fight, landing several power punched over the next few rounds, drawing Corbett into a brawl.

Jackson dropped Corbett in the 6th and then Corbett's eye started swelling in the 8th. Corbett won the 5th through the 9th and appeared to be cruising.

Corbett then regained control in the 10th and 11th to even things up. In the 12th Corbett dropped Jackson twice and had Jackson in trouble on the ropes when the bell sounded.

Corbett then won the 13th as Jackson tried to shake out the cobwebs.

Jackson stunned Corbett early in the 14th and then pounded a near defenseless Corbett for 2 minutes until the ref finally stopped in. There was no protest from the Corbett corner, although there might be once Corbett regains his senses

I had it 120-124 Corbett at the time of the stoppage. Ringside expert, Harry Otty, had it 121-125. The official judges had it 120-124 x2, 121-123.

August 10, 1908

Charles McCoy (21-7-3) pulled out a close UD15 over #2 Rube Ferns (22-11) for his 4th defense of the LBC MW title.

McCoy dropped Ferns in the first and it looked to be a quick contest until Ferns landed a big right hand to drop McCoy in the second. Ferns pounded away and even started McCoy's right eye swelling, but he couldn't finish it.

The fight was pretty even over the next 8 rounds but going into the 11th it looked as though Ferns had the advantage as McCoy was exhausted. But Ferns just didn't do enough to take the fight and McCoy edge out the victory.

I had it 143-142. Ringside expert, Aurelio Barrios, had it 143-141. The official judges gave some close rounds to McCoy and had it 144-140 x 2 and 145-139.

August 18, 1908

Aurelio Herrera (13-6) won back the LBC Featherweight crown with a KO8 over Young Corbett (15-13-4) in a rematch of their controversial April bout.

Corbett who was hurt by Herrera's power in the first 3 rounds of the April fight tried to stay on the outside this time. He won the first round. Then Herrera pounded him in the second. The 3rd round was close and then Herrera took over the fight.

Corbett when down in the 4th and Herrera clobbered him once he got up. Both of Corbett's eyes were swelling by the end of the round. The next two rounds were close but Corbett's eyes continued to swell and he was cut under his left eye.

Herrera almost had Corbett out on the ropes in the 7th as Young was saved by the bell. Then Herrera dropped him for good to start the 8th.

Honey Mellody (15-12) made his first defense of the LBA Welterweight title with basically just one punch. He scored a KO6 over #5 Tommy West (12-3-1).

West won the first five rounds by a fairly large margin, but was dropped with one big left hook early in the 6th and couldn't beat the count. Mellody not known for his power said after the fight "Well I'm sure it was just a lucky punch, I'm like the worst champion ever right?" Then he ended the press conference and walked off.

Bob McAllister (4-0) moved closer to advancing to the club ranks with a UD6 over TC Gcinile Dlamine. The third time in 4 fights that he had to go the distance with a TC though.

Bob also suffered his first cut in this fight so he will be taking October off. He'll have two shots at getting his 5th fight and moving up before the end of the year.

So far he has 5-0 ratio in Knockdowns and 6-1 in cuts. He is landing 32.7% of his punches while his opponent is landing 35.4%. The difference is that McAllister is averaging 103 punches a round compared to 35 for his opponents.

Great universe you have going here. First time I saw it didn't seem like it would really interested me as I'm more a fan of modern fighters but I must say after I finally broke down and read it it hooked me.

Though I have a question whatever did happen to Steve Taylor he had that nice little run in the beginning but seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

The main reason I started this universe was 1) I figured it would help me learn more about historical fighters and 2) I figured I'd quit and go to modern fighters after a few weeks. Fortunately it's been over a year now and I'm still going strong on it.

Steve Taylor came crashing back to earth after defeating Gus Ruhlin in early 1903 to run his record to 8-3. He lost his next 4 fights and 11 out of his next 12. Including bad losses to the likes of Dick Egan, Joe Grim and Bill Squires.

In January of 1907 he dropped to the club ranks with a record of 9-14. Since that point he has gone 2-3 but only has 12.5 retirement points left. It would seem his time is short. He'll always have the Choynski win though.
