September 1908 title fights
Only 3 title fights this month but a whopping 213 fighters in action (beginners through main)
HW - (LBA) Jack Johnson (30-1) vs. #5 James Jeffries (31-5) (Johnson was having all sorts of problems with Jeffries until he TKO'd him in the 9th back in 1907) WW - (LBA) Honey Mellody (15-12) vs #10 Dal Hawkins (10-9-1) (Mellody continues to skate by as Britton didn't qualify because he was coming off a non-title bout draw, mellody beat Hawkins by UD10 in 1907) BW - (LBC) Johnny Coulon (17-2) vs #19 Billy Plimmer (17-11-5) (Coulon won a UD10 in 1907, Plimmer is the highest ranked fighter who qualifies, he is coming off two wins and a draw for McGovern's title 3 months ago) |

Jack will keep it going with a TKO3 vs Jeffries. Mellody v Hawkins -- Plimmer is due for a little luck, he'll win in a UD. --JeffG |

Thanks for the kind words .... I think maybe Johnson is ripe for the picking this month. In their previous match Jeffries was handling his own until the 9th. Mellody is a humorous champ but I have found myself rooting for him. Plimmer has been very unlucky since losing the championship, but I still think Coulon is a little too good for him. |

Johnson records 19th defense
September 2, 1908
Jack Johnson (31-1) scored a UD15 over #5 James Jeffries (31-6) for his record 19th defense of the LBA HW title. Johnson dominated the first 5 rounds to build a substantial lead. The 6th round was the best of the fight with both fighters landing big bombs. Johnson dropped to one knee late in the round giving Jeffries the advantage. Both came away from the round with a swollen eye. Johnson suffered a cut over his left eye in the 7th, but then used his superior defense for the remainder of the fight to cruise to a victory. I had it 146-140. Tom Trunzo, ringside expert, had it 145-140. The official judges saw it 144-141/145-141/146-140. On the undercard HW - John Sullivan (26-7) KO1 Sid Russell (8-5) LH - Joe Butler (25-7-1) TKO1 Jack Graham (7-9) MW - Jack Nelson (9-1) UD10 Jack Williams (12-3-1) HW - Mick Dooley (8-22-1) TKO7 John McDermont (7-19-2) (club fight) WW - Jim Judge (5-10-1) UD10 Bill Quinn (5-10-2) (club fight) |

If a tree fell in the forrest ....
September 23, 1908
In possibly the worst title fight card ever, #10 Dal Hawkins (11-9-1) scored a TKO14 to take the LBA title from Honey Mellody (15-13). Hawkins dominated the fight in front of the 30-40 people still left in the arena. There was no cheering or boos during the fight but there was a lively debate about the future of the Geese out on Old Miller's pond. Hawkins cut Mellody in the 3rd and Mellody never got any kind of rhythem going. Mellody hit the canvas in the 11th and was pretty much out on the ropes in the 14th. I had it 125-122 at the time of the stoppage. Ringside expert, Markus Heinsohn, woke up long enough to have it 127-119. On the sleeper card HW - Bill Doherty (9-11-1) DRAW10 John Knifton (15-15-1) FW - Martin Flaherty (8-7-3) SD10 Billy O'Donnell (7-6-2) FW - Harry Decker (7-3) MD8 Billy Ryan (6-3) (both fighters at pre for this club fight) MW - Jack Fitzgerald (5-4) UD8 Frank Slavin (3-21-2) (fitz at pre for this club fight) LW - Mike Cushing (8-19-5) DRAW10 Young Joseph (4-10-3) (club fight) |

Actually, I like these type of fights when they come up for me. (but don't like them enough to wish there were many of them) I enjoy the title fights where neither fighter should be there and then they live down to their expectations - it gets me wondering what long suffering fighter or unlikely champion in my universe could now walk in and take the belt. Coulon cruises to second defense
September 29, 1908
Johnny Coulon (18-2) scored a UD15 over #19 Billy Plimmer (17-12-5) for his second defense of his LBC Bantamweight Title. Coulon traded punches in the early rounds which was a tactical mistake. The two traded rounds also for the first 6 rounds. Coulon then went defensive and used his boxing skills and the night was over for Plimmer. Coulon won the 6th-11th round and cruised from there. Both the ringside expert, George Thorn, and myself had it 145-140. The official judges had it 144-141/144-141/145-140. on the undercard WW - Mike Sullivan (11-14-4) UD10 Cy Flynn (8-3) HW - Tom Lees (16-14) UD10 Billy Smith (18-10-1) LH - Eddie McGoorty (9-1) KO3 Jim Jeffords (10-11) (mcgoorty stepped up to LHW for this win) LW - Paddy Sullivan (7-2) SD8 Joe Stein (5-2) (both fighters at pp for this club fight) MW - George Rooke (13-14-1) UD10 Matty Matthews (13-18-2) (Matthews stepped up to MW for this club fight) |

I have Seaman Johnson fighting as a HW - he is 15(4)-6-1 to-date
Thanks for the update on McAllister and Gibbons, their managers need to work a little harder at finding them bouts. There's no food on the table at this pace Christopher

october 1908 title fights
4 title fights this month and 237 fighters in action (beginner to main)
HW - (LBC) Joe Jeannette (16-0) vs #11 Mike Schreck (19-13) LHW - (UT) Jack O'Brien (LBC) (20-3-1) vs John Donaldson (LBA) (11-6) (2nd meeting between the two O'Brien won a UD10 in 8/04) MW - (LBA) Tommy Ryan (33-0-1) vs #10 Jack Bonner (18-15-1) LW - (LBC) Jack McAuliffe (26-5-2) vs #5 Harry Lyons (25-12-1) ***note*** McAuliffe is the unified champion but the LBC title is the only one up for grabs. They way it works is there is a 33% chance that the LBA title is up, 33% chance the LBC title is up, and a 34% chance that it's for the unified title. The organizations have agrees that it a UC loses one title he will be stripped of the other |

On a side note I am pleased with the results from my new routine on post-prime fighters. It lowers their overall rating by 1 (sometimes 2) and an 8 rated fighter is automatically losing to a 4 rated fighter.
Once again what I do is leave the fighter at prime but reduce his CFB/S by one, his HP by one, and his KD up by one. When he goes to end, I then reduce his END by one, his DEF by one and his PL/PM by 2. That drops him another overall point |

Jack Dillon scored a first round TKO over Fred Cooley (6-13-1) to move to 6-0. Any fighter who undefeated with at least 6 wins is automatically "watched" during fights, which means no more fast sim fights until he loses. It also means he is automatically on a fight card every time he is scheduled to fight.
**** club division fights that don't have an undefeated fighter in them are simmed using the scheduler feature, so I can get the # of fights divisible by six *** |
