Jackson retains LBF title

April 16, 1909

Peter Jackson (30-5) scored an easy UD15 over #1 Jem Mace (16-9-2) to win his 4th defense of the LBF Heavyweight title.

Jackson took a few rounds off in this fight but dominated the rounds he didn't to win a UD going away.

Mace was down for a 9 count in the 5th and if Jackson had a few seconds more it would have ended there. Jackson's right eye swelled a little in the 11th but Mace couldn't put any punches together the rest of the fight to worsen it.

I had it 146-139. Ringside expert, Jeff Riddolls had it 145-140. The official judges had it 145-141/146-139/146-139.

On the undercard

WW - George Lavigne (25-11-1) KO5 Jack Willis (10-7-1) (lavigne testing the waters at WW for this fight)
FW - Jack Hegarty (9-4) MD10 Abe Willis (9-3-1)
MW - Billy McCarthy (23-10-3) UD10 Pete McCoy (15-19-1)
LW - Joe Ellingsworth (8-1) UD8 George Washington (6-4-2) (both fighters at pp for this club fight)
HW - Steve Taylor (14-17) UD10 Tom Hinch (10-18-3) (club fight)

Driscoll prevails in tougher than expected fight

April 22, 1909

Jem Driscoll (32-5) had no trouble putting both belts on the line in what he thought would be an easy bout against #2/#3 ranked Tommy White (9-6-2). Driscoll scored a UD15 that wasn't as close as the first half of the fight appeared to be.

Driscoll came out a little flat and split the first two rounds. Swelling around White's right eye started in the second and would be a problem in the late rounds. Driscoll was dropped for only the 4th time in his career in the 3rd round.

The two fighters split most of the middle rounds until the 10th when White's eye was pretty much swelled shut. The last 6 rounds Driscoll hit him at will and the fight should of been stopped (swelling turned red in each of the last 4 rounds) but White fought on gamely.

I had the fight 146-140. Mirco Mizera, ringside expert, had it 145-140. The official judges had it 143-140/145-139/144-140. All judges gave Driscoll the last 6 rounds.

On the undercard

BW - Billy Plimmer (19-12-5) KO9 Joe Wagner (12-11)
HW - Sam McVey (23-5) UD10 Punch Vaughn (8-4)
MW - Paddy Purtell (10-12) TKO5 James Burke (18-15-5) (burke's free fall continues as he is 1-8-2 in his last 11 fights)
FW - Jack Pearson (5-6-1) TKO7 Lew Ryall (7-5) (both fighters at pp for this club fight)
LH - Charley Stevenson (8-9) KO2 Jack Kaufman (9-11) (club fight)

Herrera ekes out first LW win

April 28, 1909

Aurelio Herrera (14-8) scored a SD10 over George McFadden (9-9-2) for his first win at LW and to stop a streak of 2 straight losses and 3 out of 4.

Herrera came flying out of his corner in the first looking for an early KO and promptly got knocked on his butt. He recovered and was battling back by the end of the round. He took control of the fight winning the next 3 rounds, swelling up McFadden's right eye in the process.

McFadden won the 5th round and then Herrera won the 6th,7th and 8th. Herrera appeared worn out after the 8th and appeared to lose the last two rounds.

Mark Somogyi, ringside expert, and I both scored the fight 95-94 for Herrera. Two official judges scored it the same with the third scoring it 96-95 for McFadden.

On the undercard

FW- Tommy Kelly (15-16-2) MD10 Jack Downey (9-5) (Kelly stepped up to fw for this win)
HW - Harry Laing (10-2-1) UD10 Dick O' Brien (10-5-1)
LH - Charles Haghey (9-3) TKO9 Billy Stift (8-4)
WW - Dick Nelson (8-3) TKO2 Willie Schaeffer (6-1) (both fighters at pp for this club fight)
LW - Willie Fitzgerald (7-1-3) TKO7 Irish Jack Smith (6-6) (both fighters at pp for this club fight)
