February title fights

Not much here but of the two fights one is a great one. Both fights feature former champs trying to regain their title.

HW - (IBF) Peter Jackson (31-5-1) vs Jack Johnson (1) (35-2) (fought three times with Jackson winning a UD10 in 1900, losing a UD15 in 1902, and losing a SD15 in 1907)

FW - (WBA/C) Jem Driscoll (34-5-1) vs Jimmy Briggs (A3/C3) (13-10-5) (first meeting)

Hey, Mike, congrats on being the first to have a 1000 post thread in Inside the Ropes. That's a pretty good achievement.

Thanks, I didn't even notice it. I'm actually only 3 months away from 2 years of running this thread.

club vs TC's February 1910

Only 94 of the 262 club fighters were scheduled to fight this month. Very low #. 52 of those 94 were scheduled against TC's and they went 44-6-2.

On to the fight cards

Butler wins non-title bout

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.

February 6, 1910

Joe Butler (CH) (32-7-2) scored a UD10 over MW Jack Fogarty (UR/23) (10-4-1) in a non-title (weight-adjusted) bout, just a month after winning the WBA Lightheavyweight title.

Fogarty seemed to be outmatched by Butler's experience (Fogarty at pre) but gave a game fight. The fight was almost stopped due to the excessive swelling of the left eye of Fogarty which started in the second round.

Fogarty went down in the 4th, and was being pummeled in the 7th when he landed a shot from out of nowhere that dropped Butler. butler was back up quick and seemed to have no lingering effects as he won the rest of the rounds.

I had it 98-91, while Jaret Morgan, ringside, had it 97-92. The official judges had it 97-91/97-91/95-93.

On the undercard

WW - Jack Britton (3/2) (17-3-3) TKO8 Matty Baldwin (UR/16) (10-4-1) 68-64 at the stoppage(baldwin at pre)

WW - Billy McMillan (UR) (10-1-2) DRAW10 Danny Duane (16/16) (12-10-3) (mcmillan at pre, Duane stepped up to WW in this weight adjusted fight)

BW - Biz Mackey (UR) (9-4-1) TKO10 Morris Rauch (30/31) (7-8-1) (both at pre)

HW - Punch Vaughn (54/53) (11-5) SD10 Sid Russell (72/73) (8-9-1) (vaughn at pre)

LH - JH Brown (club) (14-16-3) KO3 SP Stockton (club) (15-18-2) (both at post in this club fight)

February 8, 1910

MW - Hugo Kelly (28/27) (16-14-1) MD10 George Gunther (UR/28) (11-4) 98-95 Kelly (gunther at pre)

LW - George McFadden (45/24) (11-10-2) TKO10 Battling Nelson (6/25) (21-15-1)

LW - Arthur Chambers (7/6) (15-2-1) KO4 Eddie Carroll (UR) (9-3) (carroll at pre)

HW - Joe Goss (18/18) (18-5-2) KO1 William Schiller (68/71) (13-8)

LH - Leo Houck (21/18) (18-11-2) UD10 Henri Placke (16/22) (6-8-2) (placke at pre)

MW - Dick Kurtz (UR/18) (6-6-3) DRAW8 Bill Gabig (UR) (7-0-2) 76-76 (both at pre for this club fight, Kurtz moves to main with his 15th fight)

Bonus for those of you who read this thread. As you all know I am a beta tester and while I won't go into details (didn't ask permission as I did in the aging patch thread) I will say that all fight cards this month have been fought with the new rankings and aging patch which will hit the main board soon (by EOM hopefully). Go back and look closely at the before and after rankings, notice no winner dropped and no loser moved up. Look carefully at the rankings on the second fight of the above card ..... the wait was worth it.

Herrera finally gets a gimme

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.

February 11, 1910

Aurelio Herrera (10/8) (18-8) finally scheduled an easy fight and he made it a short outing with a TKO2 over Irish Jack Smith (42/45) (9-7) (smith at pre).

Known for taking on tough opponents this was first real tune-up fight (1 rated fighter) since stepping up to the LW division.

Smith never went down but was defenseless on the ropes when the bout was stopped.

On the undercard

BW - Johnny Murphy (6/5) (15-1-1) KO2 Tommy Doherty (26/27) (9-7-1) (doherty at pre)

BW - Owen Moran (9/7) (26-6-6) UD10 Kid Murphy (3/3) (16-3-2) 98-92 (murphy stepped up to BW for this fight)

HW - Billy Smith (19/15) (22-13-1) KO8 Jack Burns (15/21) (15-7-1) 67-65 smith

LW - Charley Sieger (18/16) (11-3-3) UD10 George Siddons (UR/27) (8-7) (both at pre)

WW - Philadelphia Tommy Ryan (UR) (9-5) DQ7 Ted Lewis (UR) (8-1) 59-54 lewis (both at pre for this club fight, Lewis penalized once warned 6 times)

Johnson regains HW title

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.

February 13, 1910

Jack Johnson (1/CH) (36-2) scored a SD15 over Peter Jackson (CH/1) (31-6-1) to win the IBF Heavyweight title.

Johnson knocked down the champ in the 3rd, and then had to rally to win the last two rounds to win the fight. Jackson dominated the middle rounds and seemed to be back in control of the fight and may have rested to easy in the last two rounds.

Johnson's left eye started to swell in the 12th, and Jackson's right eye did the same in the 14th.

I had it 143-142 Johnson. Ringside expert, Mark Moe, had it 144-140 Johnson. The official judges had it 141-143/144-140/143-141. All of us had Johnson winning the last two rounds.

On the undercard

HW - George Godfrey (16/14) (23-14-2) TKO9 Dave Campbell (UR) (11-3) (campbell at pre)

LW - Jack Blackburn (3/3) (24-11-4) UD10 Jack Grace (41/44) (7-10) (grace at pre)

HW- Dominic McCaffrey (8/6) (28-9-3) TKO6 Dick Egan (24/26) (19-18)

WW - Jack Goodman (22/17) (10-5-3) UD10 Jack McGinty (10-1-2) 96-94 (both at pre)

FW - Frank Murphy (UR) (9-2) UD8 Joe Cain (club) (2-14-2) (murphy at pre for this club fight)

Yeah he is lucky that I stuck him down in the fairly weak LHW division. Also 6 out of 10 wins were against TC's . A new thing in my universe is don't look too closely to their record until they have 25-30 fights under their belt!!

LH - Larry Temple (13/12) (15-3-2) UD10 Yank Kenny (24/27) (6-8-3) (kenny at pre)

FW - Lew Ryall (35/37) (11-6) TD9 Leo Dobbins (37/46) (7-10) (both at pre, once again Ryall dropped due to debut fighters I've had 6 in FW this month)

February 25, 1910

MW - Jack Dempsey (8/6) (34-5) TKO5 Bob Moha (7/9) (11-4-3) 39-36 Dempsey at stoppage

FW - Billy Finucane (41/32) (9-11-3) KO5 Frank Zimpher (UR/30)*** (9-6) (zimpher at pre)

FW - Kid Broad (45/50) (13-8-1) MD10 Tommy Sullivan (40/49)*** (12-15-4) (sullivan at post)

MW - Jeff Clarke (UR) (11-1) UD10 Pete McCoy (37/41) (17-20-1) (clarke at pre, mccoy at post)

LW - Austin Gibbons (11/10) (21-17-3) TKO7 Johnny Clark (26/32) (9-5-2) (clark at pre)

HW - Jack Reed (UR) (4-8-1) TKO6 Charlie McDonald (club) (8-16-2) (reed at pre, mcdonald at post for this club fight)

***note ... I take the before rankings at the beginning of the month, so it doesn't take into account fighters who make their debut rankings during the month. So Broad dropped due to debut fighters. Also in both FW cases the the loser was still ranked ahead of the winners. It was only due to the variance built into the different organizations. The winner in both cases had more total pp and also was ranked higher in the WBC. It's just odd that it happened twice on the same card.

I'd say he's in the top 10 for sure ... but it'd be tough to put him as #1 with Jeannette, Johnson, Ryan, and alot others out there.

Former club fighter pulls off huge upset

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.

Jimmy Briggs (3/CH) (14-10-5) came all the way back from dropping to the club ranks to stun the boxing world with a SD15 over Jem Driscoll (CH/1) (34-6-1).

Briggs pulled off a similiar upset early in his career when he defeated Abe Attell to win the WBA title back in 1903. He lost in his next bout to Jimmy Whistler.

In 1906 he dropped to 3-8-1 and into the club ranks. Since then he has gone 11-2-4 and worked his way back into the main division and in position for this title shot.

There were no knockdowns or cuts or swelling in this fight. Briggs appeared to have an advantage in the early stage of the fight but Driscoll dominated the middle rounds. Briggs mounted a little rally at the end but everyone in the building thought he had come up short.

I had it 145-142 Driscoll, as did Steve McCarthy ringside. One of the official judges saw it similiar scoring the fight 145-141 Driscoll. The other two judges scored it 144-143 and 143-142 for Briggs.

Despite the stunning upset and the controversial decision the head of the LBA (me) did not mandate a rematch. The official statement from the LBA office was that the fight was close enough that it could have gone either way, Driscoll is ranked high enough that he will get another shot before long.

On the undercard

HW - Bill Lang (11/10) (18-6) KO4 Peter Maher (76/79) (16-18-1) 29-29 at stoppage (Maher at post)

BW - Jimmy Walsh (5/5) (10-9-5) UD10 Harry Ware (10/11) (11-12-2)

MW - Jack Burke (25/28)** (20-15-6) TKO10 Jack Williams (36/40) (13-7-2)

HW - Jim McCormick (UR/19) (13-2) KO10 Dick Matthews (26/29) (12-4) 87-86 McCormick at stoppage (both at pre)

BW - Ike Weir (club) (8-12-1) UD8 Harry Dally (UR) (8-3-1) (Dally at pre for this club fight
