Godfrey defends AABU title

February 22, 1911

George Godfery (11/9) (27-14-3) scored a 5th round TKO over Bill McKinnon (44/63) (14-7) to retain the AABU regional title.

The LBA commissioner ruled Godfrey could defend the title since he won it before the rule that in order to fight for a regional title you couldn't have more than 30 fights.

McKinnon stayed in the fight for the first three rounds. Then he was dropped in the 4th, swollen up in the 4th, cut in the 5th and then stopped when the doc decided the cut was too bad.

I had it 39-37.

On the undercard

LH - Jim Griffin (63/57) (14-8) UD10 John Flood (42/46) (10-13-2) (griffin stepped up to LH for this fight)

FLY - Joe McGrath (3/3) (14-3-2) UD10 Tommy Lewis (4/7) (8-8-3) (both at pre for this fight ... McGrath moves to prime)

WW - Mike Glover (9/8) (18-0-2) UD10 Cy Flynn (56/56) (9-11) 99-91 (both at pre)

MW - Jack Burke (52/33) (23-16-6) UD10 Bob Moha (6/30) (13-5-5) 98-93 (win gets Burke back in it a little bit)

FW - Hugh McPadden (UR) (8-0-2) MD8 Black Griffo (club) (6-19-2) 77-75 (mcpadden at pre for this club fight)

Dave Smith wins CBU LH title

February 25, 1911

Dave Smith (UR) (10-1) (pre) scored a UD12 over Arthur McLaglen (9/11) (13-3) (pre) to win the first CBU LH title. Smith was in the club division but with the win moved up to main.

Smith controlled the fight the entire way. He knocked down McLaglen in the 2nd and the fight was his the rest of the way. Both fighters were cut over the left eye in the 7th. Smith's was reopened twice but his corner did a good job of keeping it from stopping the fight.

I had it 118-109. Klaus Dieter Hucke (RE) had it 117-110. All the official judges saw it 118-109.

On the undercard

HW - Jack Kilrain (43/43) (19-13-6) DRAW10 Mexican Pete Everett (57/57) (13-5-1) (kilrain at post, everett at pre)

BW - Johnny Murphy (10/7) (17-3-2) TKO10 Frankie Neil (27/33) (21-21-3)

FW - Danny McBride (11/11) (14-1-1) TKO6 George Moore (49/60) (11-8-5) (both at pre)

MW - Jimmy Handler (12/5) (12-12-3) UD10 Johnny Reagan (5/15) (15-1-1) 97-91 (reagan at pre)

HW - Ned Cheeley (UR) (11-0-3) UD10 J. Pickett (68/79) (10-10-1) 98-92 (both at pre)

he retired at the end of 1908, he came back at post and is 2-1-1 since. With the competition he has I think 19-13-6 is okay ... he was one of the originals so he didn't get the opportunity of fighting TC's for his first few fights.

Good stuff as always, tough break for Bob in that title fight hopefully next tiem around goes better for him. Inerested to see how Demspey does in his new division hopefully he has better luck with the titles then he had before. Also nice to see Herrera pick up a win.

I wonder who'll be the first to crack 40 wins out of Ryan, Johnson, and Driscoll. I'm personally rooting for Ryan.

Chambers retains title in another thriller

February 28, 1911

Arthur Chambers (CH) (19-3-1) scored a 10th round TKO over challenger Danny Duane (18/24) (16-12-4) to retain the LW title in his second defense. Chambers is becoming known for his knockdown drag out bouts.

He went down in his last two fights and in this one Duane had won the 3 previous rounds by wide margins before the ref stopped it in the 10th.

Duane went down in the 4th. Then he was cut in the 5th and the champ ran away with the 6th round. Then Chambers started to tire and Duane was taking over the fight, when another cut stopped the fight in the 10th.

Hard to argue with the stoppage because his face was a bloody mess.

I had it 85-85 at the stoppage,

On the undercard

LW - Kid Fredericks (UR) (12-0) KO2 Tom Dunn (82/86) (10-7) 10-9 (both at pre)

LH - Jack Sullivan (31/19) (22-19-1) UD10 Les O'Donnell (17/29) (11-4-1) (O'donnell at pre)

HW - Joe Cobrun (22/15) (25-12-5) KO3 Johnny Woods (74/83) (19-20-3) (woods at post)

FW - Chris Tucker (37/34) (16-5-1) DRAW10 Phil McGovern (UR/37) (11-3-1) 96-95 mcgovern (both at pre, mcgovern stepped up to FW)

LW - Tim Callahan (87/82) (12-7-1) UD10 Harry Stone (83/87) (10-11-1) (both at pre)

Major Breaking News

Scheduling is underway for March in the LBA and rumor has it that Sam Langford will face Joe Jeannette with the WBA,WBC and IBF titles on the line. Big fight for both fighters. Langford is the only one who has beaten Jeannette.

Langford dominated Jeannette in June of 1910. Knocking him down 4 times in route to an 11th round TKO. He won the WBA and WBC titles in that fight.

Harry Lyons is scheduled to fight this month. It will be his 50th fight. Making him the first one to fight 50. He is still prime and is 32-16-1 and still in the top 10 of the LW's.

Billy Edwards also has 49 fights but isn't scheduled to fight this month. Edwards is at post.

While I don't have all the info in front of me, March is shaping up as a great month for title fights.

Off the top of my head we have

HW - Langford vs. Jeannette for the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles
MW - Papke vs. Ketchell - for the new IBF title
LW - Blackburn vs Frank Erne for Blackburn's IBF title.

Langford/Jeannette and Ketchel/Papke are going to be sick fights. Hoping Ketchel picks up the win as he's probably my favorite active Middleweight with Dempsey going up to LHW and Ryan having fallen on the face of the earth. Speaking of Ryan hopefully he can make his way back up and we can get a rematch to the best match ever in the LBA Ryan/Ketchel II, it was Ryan/Ketchel right. Also I have a feeling that you'll have a new USBA champ in the Middleweight division.

Yeah Ryan/Ketchel was the greatest fight in the history of the LBA - not even a close second Ryan is 10th at 39-3-1. He caught a bad break by two straight just before the ratings switch.

He fights this month for the first time since getting just embarrassed by Klaus for the WBA title back in October of 1910. Dropped 4 times and stopped in the 15th round.

The Ketchel/Papke is for the first IBF title fight. Also the USBA title fight is the initial title fight. Handler has done a pretty good job of fighting prospects so I wouldn't look past him.

My predictions
Jeannette, Godfrey, Russell, Mitchell, Ahearn, Ketchell, Erne and McAuliffe

I'm taking Langford and Blackburn otherwise I'm with you on all the other predictions

Nice to hear that Ryan is getting back into the ring. That was a heck of a layoff there hopefully this fight goes better then the last one
