Dillon keeps streaking

March 5, 1911

LH - Jack Dillon (1/1) (20-0) UD12 Georges Carpentier (5/6) (18-2) 118-112 (WBC eliminator, both at pre, Carpentier moves to Prime)

WW - Buddy Ryan (20/16) (14-16) UD10 Dal Hawkins (22/31) (15-13-1)

FW - Solly Smith (10/5) (22-16-3) KO10 Eddie Lenny (40/51) (13-9-4)

HW - Joe Choynski (29/28) (31-9-1) SD10 William Schiller (108/110) (14-11) (choynski at post)

MW - Jack Williams (64/57) (16-9-2) UD10 Ed Rollins (62/65) (22-23) 98-91 (rollins at post)

LW - Tommy Coleman (club) (6-21) SD8 Harry Scroggs (UR) (6-2-2) (scroggs at pre for this club fight)

**** Dillon is now 5th on the all-time consecutive wins streak 1 more and he would tie Young Peter Jackson and Joe Jeannette for 3rd. Only Tommy Ryan and Jeannette started their career off with more consecutive wins. #21 will probably be against Joe Butler so no easy task their. Carpentier's only two losses are to Dillon ****

Ketchel-Papke is a let down

March 11, 1911

Stanley Ketchel (2/CH) (29-7) wasn't going to let this be a great fight. He jumped on Billy Papke (1/2) (21-4) and landed 46 out of 46 punches in the first round before the referee stopped the fight.

Papke was never down but was clearly out of it. That didn't stop a riot from happening or Papke's handlers demanding a mandatory rematch. The referee had to be escorted out of the ring by the police.

There will be no mandatory rematch as the points were 38-4 when the fight was stopped with a minute still on the clock.

On the undercard

LW - George McFadden (81/61) (12-12-2) UD10 Kid McPartland (37/62) (20-19-4) 99-89 (a battle between two disappointing LW's)

BW - Joe Wagner (28/22) (16-15) Ko3 Phil McGovern (37/48) (11-4-1) (mcgovern at pre)

LH - Al Kauffman (18/10) (15-13-1) TKO1 Gunner Rawles (40/45) (10-5-2) (rawles at pre)

LW - Harry Lyons (8/6) (33-16-1) UD10 Johnny Frayne (88/86) (10-12-1) (frayne at pre)

FW - Tommy O'Toole (UR) (9-2) UD8 Leo Dobbins (club) (7-13) (both at pre in this club fight)

*** Lyons becomes the first fighter with 50 fights. He is still at prime and still going strong *****

Did Papke wear boxing trunks in this one or just a jockstrap?

Ian, Which one did you get, or does the DVD have all 3? I'd love to see that - know anywhere I can find it? Thx.

Hi Matt,

Actually it's their fourth contest which took place in Colma on the 5th July, 1909. It's a part of DeAgostini's Boxers series. It's number 21 entitled Fast Fists, also featuring Tony Zale v Rocky Graziano 3, and Sugar Ray Robinson v Jake LaMotta, not sure which one but it was in Chicago, 1951. I used to collect these when they came out on video about ten years ago but I had an incomplete colection. Getting them all delivered now. Excellent stuff. Hope this helps.

Kind of appeared that he wore boxing trunks but had them over his head ... I was really pumped for this fight then I turned my head and it was over.

Hopefully this month's Langford-Jeannette fight is better. On the plus side after reading that Ketchel book I'm glad he's back as a champ. Ketchel, Ryan and Herrera are probably my 3 favorites right now.

Incidentally, I am a little over halfway through the book and LOVE it. I will probably finish it this weekend. I hope to also finish The Real McCoy this weekend as well - a good read but not as good as the Ketchel book in my opinion. But you'll be able to decide that for yourself - it's coming your way next week.

Looking forward to Langford - Jeanette.
What was the title of the Ketchell book, Mike?

The Killings of Stanley Ketchel .. I read it and sent it on to Matt. It was historical fiction .. made up some of the holes, but it was a recount of almost all of his fights. Made me like him even more.
