Britton retains title

June 8, 1911

Jack Britton (1/1) (22-3-5) scored a TKO2 over Kyle Whitney (8/8) (17-5-5) due to injuries. Whitney seemed to have broken his jaw in the first and then broke his hand in the second.

Britton retains the USBA WW title and also this was a title eliminator for the new IBF title.

no kidding ...

a now prime Georges Carpentier is challenging Fred Russell for the WBA LHW title on the next card.

If he wins that will put Carpentier and Dillon as champions with McAlister, Dempsey, McCoy, Butler, Fitzsimmons and Houck all nipping at their tails. LHW is a nice division for me right now.

Carpentier makes quick work of Russell

June 9, 1911

Georges Carpentier (6/CH) (20-2) scored a KO1 over Fred Russell (CH/5) (18-8) to win the WBA LH title.

Both came out swinging and with about 1:00 left in the round Carpentier dropped Russell with an uppercut, ending Russell's title reign.

On the undercard

WW - Billy Myer (18/14) (31-8-4) KO4 Jimmy Mitchell (52/56) (11-11) (mitchell at pre .... Myer's 7th straight win)

Celebration in Mexico

June 10, 1911

Aurelio Herrera (9/CH) (22-9) walked right through Freddie Welsh (ch/4) (19-6-1) to score a KO4 and win the IBF LW title.

Herrera dominated the fight scoring big in the first and second rounds hurting Welsh both times. Welsh used his speed to stay away from Herrera in the 3rd. Herrera caught Welsh early in the 4th, dropping him. Herrera then finished him landing shot after shot until Welsh fell for good.

This might have been Herrera's best performance to date. It becomes the 4th time he has won a title. Twice at FW and now twice at LW. Next he will try to do what he has never done - defend the title.

I had it 29-28.

On the undercard

BW - Harry Tenny (14/14) (19-7-3) UD10 Watty Austin (25/31) (16-14-3) 97-90(both fighters down)

HW - Al Kubiak (77/64) (13-7) KO4 Charley Mitchell (90/102) (28-13-2) (kubiak at pre ... doesn't get any worse than this for Mitchell)

LW - Tommy Murphy (88/81) (13-15-3) UD10 Johnny Clark (75/85) (11-7-2) (clark at pre)

HW - Peter Felix (104/91) (17-18-2) UD10 Walter Altieri (69/82) (10-5-1) (felix at post, altieri at pre)

LH - Gunner Moir (club) (11-15-1) UD10 JH Brown (club) (17-20-3) (brown at post for this club fight)

Way to go Aurelio. I don't know how I missed this post yesterday but this great. I was worried that Herrera was going to lose this fight but man he worked Welsh, now hopefully he can finally get the monkey off his back and defend the blasted title.

You've got to give Herrera a soft first defense or the hometown crowd may get ugly Mike.

I would like to give him a soft defense but we will just have to see how the schedule works out. The other LW champs are Tim Kearns and Arthur Chambers. That leaves a lot of talented contenders out there.

Well he'd probably like another shot at Chambers, since Chambers destroyed him last time

Fitzgerald defends CBU

June 14, 1911

Willie Fitzgerald (15/14) (19-1-3)(pre) dominated Jacob Hyams (36/46) (12-4-1) (pre) to win a UD12 for his first defense of the CBU LW title.

Pretty boring fight as Fitzgerald controlled the fight the whole way. No cuts, no knockdowns. Fitzgerald moved to prime after the fight.

I had it 117-112. My alterego was the ringside expert and he had it 116-112. The official judges had it 116-112/118-111/116-112.

On the undercard

FLY - Sid McGrath (3/3) (16-3-2) SD10 Kid Murphy (7/8) (19-6-3) 95-94 Mcgrath (mcgrath down once, Murphy lost last 4 rounds)

LH - Dan Flynn (27/20) (15-8-3) MD10 Jim Dunn (25/37) (16-8-1)

LW - Arthur Cote (67/55) (15-7-1) MD10 Young Erne (55/67) (17-9) (cote at pre)

HW - Charles Horn (UR) (8-0-1) DRAW8 Martin Neary (club) (15-18-2) 75-75 (horn at pre, neary at post for this club fight .... Horn penalized, Neary down)

LH - SP Stockton (club) (19-20-2) SD10 Fred Cooley (club) (13-17-2) (stockton at post for this club fight)

June 15, 1911

Willie Ritchie (20/15) (18-3-3) scored a TKO3 over Jack Keenan (10/16) (17-2-1) (pre) to win the USBA LW title.

Keenan was cut over the right eye in the first. It was reopened in the second and the third. The ref stopped it in the third.

I had it 19-19 at the stoppage. Keenan moved to prime after the fight.

On the undercard

BW - Harry Forbes (32/25) (20-18-7) KO9 Charley Parton (24/32) (11-6-1) (parton at pre)

LH - Jack Sullivan (23/23) (22-19-2) DRAW10 Jack Graham (51/49) (12-13-2)

What do the two numbers to the right of the boxer's name signify??

I looked Ritchie up. He was KO'd in his first professional fight, but was never again KO'd. He did lose by TKO many years later.

Correct, before and after WBA rankings. So the regional champs are still shown with a ranking.

Madden pulls off the upset

June 16, 1911

Jack "Kid" Madden (15/CH) (17-2) scored a TKO5 over Terry McGovern (CH/10) (35-8-4) to win the WBA BW title.

A close fight for the first 4 rounds was marked by Madden's right eye swelling and a deep nasty gash over McGovern's right eye in the 4th.

The cut was reopened in the 5th and the ring doc had seen enough.

I had it 39-38 McGovern at the stoppage.

On the undercard

June 17, 1911

Cal McCarthy (7/5) (19-6) (pre) scored a UD12 over Dick Hollywood (UR) (12-1) (pre) to win the USBA FW title.

A closely contested fight was even through 6. McCarthy dropped Hollywood in the 7th and controlled the fight from there on out. Both fighters ended with some swelling around the left eye. McCarthy won 5 out of the last six rounds.

I had 116-111. Steve McCarthy at ringside has it 114-113??? The official judges had it 116-111/115-112/115-112.

On the undercard
