Pyramid System Replay Restarted

Hi Guys,
I have decided to restart my Pyramid system replay i barely got of the ground before it in tandem with my ongoing tournament replay.

I am starting in 1960 mainly because i have a lot of boxing magazines from that period and also because i want to do the other classic divisions and not just concentrate on the heavy's.

My main aim in a historical replay is what if? What if boxing had been controlled in a sane and fair way and championchips would have been only won in the ring and the most deserving contenders got regular shots at the titles and champions defended often.

Aiming towards this goal I have come up with a system as follows.

Only the classic eight weight classes will be simulated folding all other divisions into the higher class above it (junior welter into welter).

Each divison will crown its first champ with a single elimination eight man tourney.

This World Champion will be the undisputed champ but will have to defend his title four times per year against the champions of the WBC,WBA, IBF and WBO in 15 round fights.

The above four organisations will each crown their own champion in a vacant title fight. Each organisation champ is considered a "top contender" for the undisputed world championchip and as such automatically gains a shot at the undisputed world champ each year.

To earn this shot at the world champion each organisation champion in turn has to defend their organisational title four times against other top ten contenders in 12 round bouts.

To determine which contenders get shots at the four organistion champs a final eliminator is held over ten rounds.

To show you how it works in practice here is an example.

April 1960

Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion - Ingemar Johansson

WBC Heavyweight Champion - Floyd Patterson
WBA Heavyweight Champion - Sonny Liston
IBF Heavyweight Champion - Zora Folley
WBO Heavyweight Champion - Eddie Machen

WBC Final Eliminator - Henry Cooper VS. Willie Pastrano
WBA Final Eliminator - Alex Miteff VS. Cleveland Williams
IBF Final Eliminator - Roy Harris VS. Archie Moore
WBO Final Eliminator Billy Hunter VS. Mike DeJohn

Lets say for arguments sake the winners of the April final eliminator bouts were Cooper, Williams, Moore and Dejohn
in may they would face the organisation champs as follows

WBC - Patterson VS. Cooper
WBA Liston VS. Williams
IBF Folley VS. Moore
WBO Machen VS DeJohn

after those bouts are played out in June the next organisation champ due for a shot (in this example say the WBC champ Patterson) would get his shot at the WORLD champ Johnasson.
If Patterson loses he retains his WBC title and must defend it again another four times before gaining another shot at the world champ.
If he wins he becomes world champion, vacates his WBC crown and the former world champ and another leading contender (lets say Clevland Williams) have an immediate box off for the vacant WBC title.

Then the whole process starts again with the WBA champ getting the shot at the undisputed World champ the next time and so on.

Note that even if Johansson wins the vacant WBC title in the example he must defend it another four times before gaining a shot at the start of the next year.

I will be matchmaker for all bouts for eliminators and tournaments to ensure fights are made I wish to see.

I will post again with starting champions and match ups in the other divisions.

ELIMINATOR HEAVYWEIGHT Cooper vs. Erskine

Preview

Henry Cooper is a big favourite here. Too powerful and busy for Erskine over the ten rounds. Erskine's only chance is to box smartly like we know he can and open up Copper's face with quick jabs and counters.

Prediction - Cooper by late stoppage.

Joe Erskine W10 Split Henry Cooper

Joe Erskine upset the form book here in London tonight as he in my book throughly outboxed his more popular opponent. Although the judges had it as a split decision 6-3, 6-3, 4-6 in Erskine's favor, It should really have been unanimous as Erskine continually beat Cooper to the punch and out boxed his harder punching opponent.
Erksine never looked in any trouble and by the end of the fight Cooper's face looked both swollen and had a nasty gash just under his left eye.

Cooper really blew his chance and now Erskine will now face Floyd Patterson for the WBC crown and a chance to face world champ Johannson in March.

Roy Harris Vs. Archie Moore

This one is intriguing. Moore would have easily dealt with this pretender a few years ago, but ancient Archie is now not what he was and that makes it harder to call.
I still like Moore though by a clear decision or late stoppage.

Archie Moore W10 Un. Roy Harris

In apretty uneventful match up the old Mongoose was just too wily and clever for his faster younger opponent. winning a unanimous decision 6-3, 5-4, 8-1 Moore was in control and deserved the verdict but took a surprising number of punches from Harris.
Moore countered well and was clearly still the more skilled fighter but his offesne was choppy and his once vaunted power never seemed to bother Harris.

Moore now faces Zora Folley for the WBA belt which could be a bit of a snooze fest.

Big Cat Williams is a huge favourite over glass jawed Powell in this IBF Eliminator
I cannot see Powell lasting into the second half of the fight as Williams big bombs reign down on him.

Williams early stoppage.

Cleveland Williams KO2 Charley Powell

Big Cat Williams destroyed hapless Charley Powell tonight in Cincinnatti with a display of dangerous power punching that Powell was unable to answer.

Williams came out swinging in the first hurting Powell with his very first solid punch and dropping him half way through the round with a concussive hook to the temple.
Powell was now in awful trouble and he dropped to the canvas again late in the round after taking a solid jab.
the Ref took a solid look at him before the bell sounded the end of the round. But defeat was near as he walked onto a perfect uppercut mid way through the second and slumped to the canvas unconcious.
The ref did not bother to count and the mismatch was over.

Williams is now pitched in to a mouth watering matchup with Sonny Liston for the IBf bauble in a battle of the two heavyweight power punchers of the division.

Alex Miteff vs. Billy Hunter

Miteff is the slight favourite here. He is younger, faster, is on a great run of victories and Billy Hunter's chin has been letting him down in recent times.

My Prediction is clear points win for Miteff.

Alex Miteff W10 Maj. Billy Hunter

The young Argentinian Miteff squeaked through on the judges scorecards here 6-4, 5-4, 5-5. Although at ringside i had him a comfortable winner 8-1.
Hunter made it compettive although i never thought he was winning the fight. Miteff always had a little too much for him and this was underlined in the final round as Hunter tired and battered was floored with a great left hook and barely lasted the final round.

Miteff will now fight Eddie Machen for the WBO title and he will have to raise his game to have a chance of unseating the excellent Machen.

Von Clay KO1 Willie Pastrano

In a big upset here in the Light Heavy division Von Clay completley destroyed slick Willie Pastrano in a hugely impressive display of power and accuracy.
Pastrano's normal slick footwork and slippery defense were no where to be seen as Clay cut off the ring on his mobile opponent and took him apart with pinpoint punches.
Pastrano was wobbling by the end of the round and was then poleaxed by a huge over hand right which he was unable to rise from.

Von Clay now meets WBC title holder Harold Johnson next month and on this form he has a very good chance!

Sixto Rodriguez W10 Un. Jimmy Slade

Rodriguez was to young and to fast for old veteran Slade. Old Jimmy lost a lopsided decision as his reflexes and old skills looked diminished.

Rodriguez's keys to victory were his fast left jab and snappy combinations. Never letting Slade start his famous mauling and clutching tactics.

By the 5th Slade was tired and fading. Rodriguez never took any chances though and continued his tried and tested method of piling up the points on his older foe.

Slade looks ready for retiirement, but Rodriguez can look foward to a clash with WBA kingpin Eric Schoeppner.

Carl Bobo Olson W10 Un. Sonny Ray

Olson won a clear decision 8-4, 8-4, 5-4. He achieved it through a determined and sustained body attack during the early rounds which had Ray exhausted by round 7.
Olson then went in for the kill battering Ray around the ring in the 8th and 9th.
The ref should have perhaps stopped the contest but Ray bravely always fired back at a crucial moment.
Despite this some rounds were very sluggish and hard to call as both men clinched and posed.

Olson will now face Jesse Bowdry for the IBF title in Febuary.

Mike Holt TKO3 Cuts Chic Calderwood

Veteran South African Holt will fight Durelle for the WBO Light Heavyweight championship in February after a real thrre round bardn stormer with Chci Calderwood.
Both men fought tooth and nail in the center of the ring from the first bell and it was very close until mid way in the third when a hook from Holt sliced open Calderwood's right eye leaving a nasty gash which left the ref no choice but to stop the bout and award it to Holt.

A rematch down the pike would be a good fight and a chance for calderwood to show he has the measure of the more experianced Holt.

For Holt his upcoming WBO title fight might be a last hurrah in a long career.

Dick Tiger W10 Un. Henry Hank

Dick Tiger put in a superb performance in overcoming tough, hard punching Henry Hank to preopel him into a WBC title match with Spider Webb.

Tiger boxed his more aggressive foe carefully, the key to his victory being his wonderful counter punches which caught the wild swinging Hank time and time again.
the judges scored it 8-3, 8-3, 9-1 for Tiger although Hank did make it a good fight and caught the iron chinned Nigerian with some great shots.

By the end of the fight however Hank was exhausted and Tiger stsrted to work him over on the inside with hooks and uppercuts, flooring him with a great right hand in the 10th. Hank looked a beaten man but manged to pull himself up at the count of nine to finish the fight with his pride intact.

Laszlo Papp TKO4 Cuts Joey Giardello

Papp looked impressive albeit fortunate in this four round stoppage of the veteran contender Giardello.
Papp had his nose slightly in front after 3 rounds although he had been hurt by a stiff right hand in the 3rd. Papp came back in the 4th to hurt Giardello with his patented left hook. This was also the punch that caused the cut which forced the rather premature stoppage.

We call for a rematch down the line but in the meantime the Hungarian faces the great Sugar Ray Robinson himself for the WBA crown in February.

Paul Pender TKO6 Swelling Joey Giambra

Can't make up my mind if Giambra looked so bad or Pender looked so good.
Pender took Giambra apart here with pinpoint punching accuracy as his jab was a thing of beauty.
Giambra looked in big trouble after the third as his eyes started to swell. In the 4th he was floored for an eight count after being caught off balance. By the end of the round both eyes had swollen horribly and it was only a matter of time before the ref stopped the contest.

Pender now faces Scholtz for the IBF Championship in February while Giambra looking very shopworn goes back to the drawing board.
