There have been a few, but a lot of the guys ranked from, say, 3-9 or so are guys with the same rating (7 or 8 usually) so you've got very even fighters going. The Pineda upset over Trinidad is the big one, obviously. Only one #1 seed is gone I believe, but, as in the NCAA Tourney, there have certainly been some 10s beating 7's, 11's beating 6's and such.

Friday, June 12 - Friday Night Fights RESULTS

CW WBC Jose Maria Flores (13) vs Alexandre Gurov (5) (Gurov UD 10: 98-92, 98-92, 99-91. Gurov coasts to victory here as Flores proves no match. He'll face the winner of Vasili Jirov and Dale Brown.)

JBW WBC Medgeon Singsurat (3) vs Payao Poontarat (11) (Draw: 95-95, 95-95, Singsurat 97-94. Back and forth battle, good action with some lulls. Poontarat keeps up the tough work and will have another crack at Singsurat in late July or early August.)

FW IBF Danny Lopez (2) vs In Jin Chi (7) (Chi UD 10: 94-93, 94-93, 97-91. A stunner here, though Chi is certainly well regarded. Nobody expected this and it's not without controversy. Chi drops Lopez in the third and again in the fourth when he busts open a wide gash under Lopez's eye. After taking a great deal of punishment in the first 4 rounds, Lopez shows a champion's heart in the 5th with a relentless attack that batters Chi from pillar to post, but is unable to get him off his feet. Round 6 brings to crowd to its feet with a round of the year candidate, just flat out slugging, no breaks, no hesitation. The 7th is more measured, but the 8th sees Lopez battling again and Chi looking like he's on the way out. To his credit though, he withstands the assault again and survives. The pace slows in an even 9th and 10th that sees Lopez end the bout with a savage cross that Chi absorbs falling into the ropes. The scores are announced and it comes out that all three judges scored the 4th as a 10-7 round for Chi, despite the fact that Lopez was down only once and did not have a point deducted. Were it scored 10-8, the bout is a majority draw and a rematch would be held. Instead, the #2 seed goes home. Chi will next face Daniel Seda (11).)

JBW IBF Alexander Munoz (1) vs Katsuya Onizuka (9) (Draw: Munoz 95-93, Onizuka 93-93, 94-94. A near upset, as the crowd is treated to a thrilling bout, with a pace the first 4 rounds that may be unmatched in the tournament. Onizuka did an outstanding job in the first half of the fight, despite speculation from some quarters that he had overtrained for the bout and seemed sluggish in recent days. No sign here. Munoz responds in second half, but Onizuka had controlled the first half and, once he floored Munoz in the 7th, it appeared Munoz would need a knockout to win. He didn't get it but, with Onizuka fighting a very defensive 10th round and appearing on his way to victory, Munoz blasted a straight right through the gloves with 10 seconds left in the bout. Onizuka goes down, is up as the round ends and Munoz gets the 10-8 round needed to survive and get the rematch. Fight of the year candidate solely for the ending.)

Wow, and we complain about all the draws in soccer! ;-}

Great stuff GF! Nice to have a card with so many thrilling fights.

Unfortunately, it's been kind of a snoozer in my uni the last few nights, so its good to read some great reports on fights going down to the wire.

Some real good fights of late -

I think I would pick Onizuka over Munoz - His style would have caused all sorts of problems for the power puncher (seeing how Castillo beat Munoz to the punch all night long when they fought several months back)

The Chi Vs Lopez would have been a classic - And it looks like it was - Chi will be a tough guy to beat for anyone - Though he'll probably get out pointed down the round in your tourney is my guess -

Thanks for the comments guys.

Geebob: That last card was stunningly close to 3 out of 4 draws...fact is, logically, the Lopez/Chi bout should have been a draw too (Chi won the round 27-1 with a knockdown, hence the 10-7, but usually one knockdown rounds get a 10-8 from what I've seen. This time, all 3 judges gave it to Chi 10-7, the difference in the fight).

Meade: Chi is a very solid #7 seed, I just expected Lopez to outpoint him as you said. He'll go into the semifinal as the favorite against Seda though, so he could end up in the title bout against either Vicente Saldivar (the IBF top seed) or #12 seed Cecilio Lastra who has decisioned #5 Derrick Gainer and #4 Johnny Famechon. I'd expect Saldivar to beat him on points, but who knows.
I don't know enough about Onizuka to have had a real good expectation regarding that bout other than the seeding. Pretty much as you described though, Onizuka frustrated Munoz for much of the bout but his power bails him out of the loss in the final seconds. Think the rematch will be a lot of fun to watch.

Will have the next card written up shortly, some good ones there too (Leonard, Whitaker, Barrera on that one)

Saturday, June 13 - Showtime Championship Boxing RESULTS

JLW IBF Alfredo Escalera (2) vs Arturo Leon (7) (Escalera UD 10: 99-90, 98-91, 96-93. Escalera cruises to an easy victory, Leon growing timid after a 4th round knockdown and Escalera taking advantage of it, realizing he had to put himself at minimal risk. He was offensive enough, but he surely wasn't going to exert himself to go toe-to-toe with a fighter who wasn't demanding it and doing nothing to hurt him. Escalera will go home and relax on the couch, waiting for the winner of tomorrow night's battle between Tyrone Everett and Cornelious Boza-Edwards.)

FW WBA Marco Antonio Barrera (3) vs Freddie Norwood (6) (Norwood UD 10: 98-91, 98-91, 99-91. A virtuoso performance by Norwood, who talked loud and often leading into the fight of being tired of hearing about the big 4 in the tournament thought by many to be the hottest of all. After a first round that had round of the year possibilities, both fighters near going down twice a piece in the round, it seemed Barrera just couldn't find his rhythm. Of course, much of that was Norwood disrupting it, evading the stalking Barrera well, making him run and work, defending himself skillfully, sticking Barrera then clinching before he could respond, them moving away. Barrera was visibly frustrated for much of the fight, desperately wanting Norwood to stand in front of him. It was, tactically, a perfect bout by Norwood, who now awaits the winner of Manny Pacquiao vs Kevin Kelley.)

LW WBC Pernell Whitaker (1) vs Ray Mancini (8) (Whitaker TKO 6 (cuts): The always game Mancini pressured Whitaker in the first 2 rounds and had him a bit off balance with a couple of good hooks, but Whitaker was landing pretty much at will, and the large gash that resulted over Mancini's left eye couldn't be controlled, ultimately stopping the bout. Floyd Mayweather Jr., the #2 seed, was ringside, and he and Whitaker jawed briefly after the bout. But first, Whitaker will meet Jose Luis Ramirez.)

WW WBA Sugar Ray Leonard (1) vs Michele Piccirillo (9) (Leonard UD 10: 99-88, 99-88, 100-88. Well, at least Piccirillo went the distance. Leonard put on a show, literally at times, and took some rounds off at others, realizing it was well in his grasp. Still, Piccirillo is dropped during a savage 4th round where most in attendance thought the bout would be stopped, and again in the 7th. Leonard, who stopped Andrew Lewis in 1 round, has made it look easy, and now awaits the winner of Vernon Forrest vs Marlon Starling.)

Wow! - Norwood beats Barrera! - I'm sure that first rd changed the whole pace of the fight - Was Barrera more hurt between the two in the first round?? (fights like these are what keep TBCB so interesting!)

And Whitaker Vs Mancini would have been a darn interesting fight - Though I would guess it would have went just about exactly how you simmed it - (Whitaker Vs Mayweather....that one I definitely want to see!!).

Barrera actually won the round 21-18. It was like Norwood figured he'd take it to him, handled himself well but realized if he kept at it that way he'd likely get his lights put out, and decided to play the more evasive angle (though he clinched a LOT). I'm a huge Barrera fan, so I admit this one disappointed me, but still nice to see just the way it played out.

As for Whitaker/Mayweather...Pernell has to beat the winner of Ramirez/Bizarro. Mayweather has to beat Hilmer Kenty. Those things happen, it's on for the WBC Lightweight title.

Sunday, June 14 - Sunday Night Fights RESULTS

JLW IBF Tyrone Everett (3) vs Cornelius Boza-Edwards (6) (Boza-Edwards SD 10: 96-95, 96-95, 95-96. Very good fight as Everett controls the first 4 rounds according to most ringside observers, though 2 of 3 gave Boza a round 3 in which it seemed Everett was in control. Boza accelerates the pace later and does stellar body work in the final 3 rounds to eek out the very questionable decision. The SNF scorecard had the bout 97-94 for Everett. Nonetheless, Boza-Edwards moves on to face Alfredo Escalera.)

WW IBF Donald Curry (3) vs Randy Shields (6) (Curry UD 10: 100-89, 99-90, 98-91. Shields thoroughly outclassed here as Curry, fresh off a 4th round KO of Joey Gamache, continues to impress. The IBF has a nice tourney going here, despite its "third ring" status...Hearns as the 1-seed and Curry's semifinal opponent, Wilfred Benitez, as the 2-seed, are tough customers. It will be interesting to see if Curry has what it takes to stop Benitez.)

BW IBF Masahiko Harada (2) vs Greg Richardson (7) (Harada UD 10: 98-92, 98-92, 99-92. Harada won the fight, but this scoring makes it out to be more of a blowout than it was. Richardson controlled the opening round before Harada went to work in 2 and 3. The two battled evenly in the 4th before Richardson seemed to control the 5th - a round 2 of 3 judges inexplicably awarded to Harada, who would go on to control rounds 6 through 8. Richardson would win the 9th, putting Harada in trouble and on the defensive, but an uneventful 10th was followed by Harada getting the decision. He will face the winner of Tim Austin and Alberto Davila.)

WW WBC Jose Napoles (1) vs Adolph Pruitt (9) (Napoles UD 10: 99-92, 99-91, 100-90. Pruitt is never a threat and Napoloes goes into cruise control for second half of the fight. Once Pruitt realized he couldn't mount an attack himself, his tactic seemed to be just don't get blasted. Napoloes was happy to ride it out, and on to face the winner of Lloyd Honeyghan and Curtis Cokes.)

I grew up watching Hilmer Kenty live at Joe Louis & Cobo Hall arena's in Detroit!! - Spoke with him outside the areana the night Hearns KO'd P. Cuveas to win the WW title!! He was quite a nice guy -

He'll probably give Mayweather a pretty good fight!

You have some interesting fights coming up - Norton Vs Dokes should be a good one - I'll take Benitez over Curry by Dec - Hearns and Fenech should also win I'd suspect -

Vernon Forest Vs Starling is another quite interesting match-up - Tough call there - I'll go with Starling by late rd TKO -

Ditto that fight with Simon Brown Vs C. Spinks - I'll take Simon's power as the edge -

Antonio Tarver's chin is rated a 3. Do you think a 2 is more accurate?

I'll be honest with you Jim, I think a 2 is probably more accurate at this point, but there are others here (see Meade, for example) who are better judges of this stuff than I am.

Just simmed the latest batch...Benitez/Curry is at a later date, of course. Norton/Dokes, Forrest/Starling and Brown/Spinks were all very good fights.

Probably won't get to write ups tonight but some good stuff, including 2 VERY questionable referee moves.

Friday, June 19 - Friday Night Fights

JFW WBC Juan Antonio Lopez (13) vs Ji-Won Kim (5) (Kim UD 10 96-94 on all 3 cards: Even if unspectacular bout. Lopez gives a good effort, but Kim better controls the pace and is more accurate throughout the bout. Kim gets top-seed Sergio Palma in the semifinal.)

JLW IBF Daniel Attah (13) vs Yodsanan Nanthacahi (12) (Nanthachai KO 2: In a battle of the underdogs - Attah beating #4 Brian Mitchell and Nanthachai beating #5 Tony Lopez - heavy leather is traded while the bout lasts. Quickly becomes clear Nanthachai is willing to take shots to give them, and he wins an active opening round tradeoff. Nanthachai starts the second the same way, and Attah quickly wilts under the pressure. A hook from Nanthachai strikes Attah at the bell, but Attah stays upright momentarily before collapsing. He is counted out, but his corner contends that he didn't go down until after the bell so he should not been counted out. Referee Chuck Hassett disagrees and Nanthachai scores the 2nd round KO. Now he waits for top seed Julio Cesar Chavez to battle Sirimongkol Singmansak.)

JMW WBC Koichi Wojima (2) vs Travis Simms (7) (Wajima UD 10: 98-91, 99-89, 98-90. Wojima controls the bout after round 3, and shows no sign of even being hurt after the second. Simms is dominated in every fashion, as Wojima looks very impressive in controlling the pace and displaying excellent accuracy with his punches. Wajima awaits the winner of Carmelo Bossi/Javier Castillejo).

BW IBF Jeff Chandler (1) vs Romeo Anaya (9) (Chandler TKO 3: The top seed impresses again, dropping Anaya a minute into the fight, again in the 2nd and twice in the third before referee Carlos Padilla calls a halt to the brutality unsatisfied with the response when Anaya is asked if he wants to continue. Chandler will fight Eijiro Murata in the semifinal.)

Saturday, June 20 - HBO Boxing After Dark RESULTS

WW WBA Vernon Forrest (4) vs Marlon Starling (5) (Forrest MD 10: 96-94, 96-94, 95-95. Forrest finds holes in Starling's defense to open the fight, controlling much of the first 1:30 before a stiff uppercut from Starling makes Forrest rethink the caution a bit. Forrest counterpunches effectively for much of the first 6 rounds, letting Starling be the aggressor and finding openings while Starling came loaded for bear. With Forrest winning easily he begins to be more and more evasive. But Starling starts to become more effective at cutting Forrest off, boxing him in and forcing him into exchanges. It becomes Starling who is connecting with solid combinations, particularly to the body, setting up head work that has Forrest reeling and in danger in rounds 7-9. Forrest spends the 10th essentially running, and his work in rounds 7-9 seems to have exhausted Starling, who doesn't bring much of an attack to the table but wins the round simply for being the aggressor. A dangerous tactic by Forrest to spend the last 4 rounds basically in fear of being knocked out, but it proves to work as he eeks out the close decision. Forrest will now face #1 seed Ray Leonard in the semifinal.)

HW IBF Ken Norton (3) vs Michael Dokes (11) (Dokes UD 10: 96-93, 96-93, 98-91. An interesting night, as 2 fights from the same tournament take place, the winner of this one to face the winner of Bowe/Bruno. Here, Dokes is more accurate and proves to be a very poor matchup stylistically for Norton who is just begging for Dokes to stand in and trade with him. After a first round where he realizes that's not the way to go, Dokes wears out Norton with solid defensive work and accurate, if not overpowering, punching. With this, Dokes sat in the dressing room to watch the next bout and see his next opponent.)

HW IBF Riddick Bowe (2) vs Frank Bruno (10) (Bruno TKO 2: What Dokes saw stunned the hell out of him, the crowd, and especially the Bowe camp. Opening round sees Bowe fight inside, striking Bruno twice with uppercut/cross combinations, the second one sending Bruno into the ropes. Bowe's attack is halted by referee Tony Orlando, who warns Bowe for rabbit punching, sparking an argument with Bowe and his corner. Bowe comes back after the break and hammers Bruno again, but the bell rings before he could finish him off. Bowe starts the second round with a perfect combination that rattles Bruno, and Bruno's left eye is noticably swelling. Suddenly, a Bruno combination halts Bowe's attack and it's Bruno who is on the offensive. A right hard, followed by a pair of uppercuts inside that shake up Bowe, who suddenly looks extraordinarily tired. Bruno keeps it up, leaning on him and banging home uppercuts inside, mixed with body work. Bowe clinches but is not responding with any blows of his own. After a clinch is broken, Bruno lands another uppercut and Orlando jumps in to halt the bout. Chaos ensues in the ring and Orlando is escorted out. A controversial stoppage, but not completely irrational. For whatever reason, Bowe stopped responding with any shots and had taken some heavy artillery from Bruno with 30 seconds still remaining in the round. But Bowe's corner would argue their guy was just as dominant in the opening round, and would have finished Bruno then if not for Orlando's rabbit punching warning they felt was unwarranted. The rounds, in "points", were 23-0 Bowe, 31-4 Bruno. All that said, the right half of the IBF bracket semifinal features #10 Frank Bruno and #11 Michael Dokes.)

JLW WBA Alexis Arguello (1) vs Jorge Barrios (9) (Arguello TKO 6: Barrios is target practice for Arguello, who drops him twice in the 4th and again in the 6th, before referee Jay Nady says enough is enough. Asked after the bout regarding the brash comments Hector Camacho has been making regarding what he'll do to the top seed if they meet, Arguello deferred, saying they both have fights before that. His is with Rocky Lockridge.)

WW IBF Thomas Hearns (1) vs Billy Backus (8) (Hearns UD 10: 98-89, 98-89, 100-87. Backus is dropped with a blast in the first and spends most of the rest of the night trying not to get himself killed. He's dropped twice in the 7th as well, a round after he hurt Hearns for the only time in the fight. Hearns now awaits the winner of tomorrow night's Simon Brown/Corey Spinks matchup.)
