HBO Boxing After Dark Results, August 7
IBF Lightweight: Leonard Dorin vs Levander Johnson (Non-Tourney) Dorin leads early but is stopped on cuts in the 7th. Johnson had dropped him in the 5th and essentially took over the bout from there. Dorin is now winless in 3 bouts (0-2-1) while Johnson evens his record at 1-1. IBF Flyweight: #1 Michael Carbajal vs #5 Sot Chitalada An exciting bout as Chitalada bangs with Carbajal for some impressive exchanges. Carbajal puts Chitalada in a load of trouble in the second round, battering him from pillar to post but is unable to put him down. In the midst of Carbajal's assault, Chitalada slams a cross of Carbajal's head, completely freezing him. Chitalada bangs away again before Carbajal fires back, drawing a cut under Chitalada's left eye. Carbajal fought an excellent defensive battle as well, and in the third he completely dominated. Chitalada looked in severe trouble but again, despite absorbing loads of punishment, he wouldn't leave his feet. And the same pattern continued through the fourth, Carbajal hammering away at Chitalada. Though he was taking a beating, he hadn't been down and showed enough response that ref Paul Sita, while watching carefully, would not stop it yet. But he was cut under his left eye, his right eye was badly swollen, and blood was trickling from his nose. In the fifth, Chitalada let his hands go a bit more and Carbajal was willing to trade. Surprisingly, at least to Carbajal, Chitalada had enough left to pack a shot, energized by desperation perhaps, and the two banged heavy leather for the duration of the round to the roar of the crowd. A flurry at the end of the round tipped it in Chitalada's favor and he would look to carry that momentum onward. Carbajal opened the 6th firing, and landing again. Chitalada was having a harder time seeing, and his defenses were porous. But he was firing back, though not landing at a high enough clip, and his shots had some steam. Late in the round, Carbajal fired a big cross that Chitalada dodged, landing a powerful right to the body that put Carbajal to the canvas in a delayed reaction. Suddenly, Chitalada was back in the fight. Unfortunately, he was forced into defensive mode by his physical condition. He could barely see, and breathing was a chore with blood from his nose pouring into his mouth. Chitalada was swinging when he felt trapped, but otherwise he was just trying to keep from getting drilled. Carbajal would pick him apart for the next 2-plus rounds before knocking him down with an uppercut midway through the 9th. Chitalada rose and gamely tried to continue fighting, but he soon became target practice and Sita called the bout at 2:34 of the 9th. Carbajal landed just shy of half of his blows, the accumulation proving too much for Chitalada. Carbajal will now wait for either #2 Myung-Woo Yuh or #3 Hilario Zapata. WBC Cruiserweight: #1 Vasily Jirov vs #5 Alexandre Gurov Main event of the evening, but a short writeup...Jirov knocks out Gurov at 1:21 of the first round. Jirov has now fought 6 rounds in his 3 fights and will sit and wait for the winner of the other semifinal matchup between #2 Jean-Marc Mormeck and #11 S.T. Gordon. GH |

Sunday Night Fights Results, August 8
WBA Jr. Welterweight: Saoul Mamby vs Sang Hyun-Kim (Non-Tourney) An artistic, stellar effort from Mamby. Not a crowd pleaser, given Mamby's defense-first style, but he carried out his plan effectively to take the unanimous decision 96-95, 98-93, 98-93. WBA Middleweight: #2 Rodrigo Valdez vs #3 Dick Tiger Up next for the winner, Marvin Hagler. Good luck. Valdez starts well and responds to Tiger's best round of the fight (the 4th) by knocking him down late in the 5th after a lot of punishment. From there on, Tiger was just beaten to the punch consistently and outworked, taking too much punishment until referee Jose Medina-Solar stopped the bout due to a cut over Tiger's right eye and swelling around the same eye. Valdez will battle Hagler for the WBA Middleweight crown, probably in October. WBA Welterweight: #7 Rafael Pineda vs #3 Luis Rodriguez Pineda's bout gets top billing given the fascination with him since his wipeout of Felix Trinidad in the first round of their first-round matchup. But Pineda is thoroughly outclassed here, and spends most of the fight loading up for a big shot that never comes. Rodriguez is hurt several times by powerful shots, but Pineda is never able to mount a longterm offensive. An uppercut, combination then cross from Rodriguez leave Pineda virtually defenseless and referee Larry Hazzard halts the bout, to Pineda's dismay, at 2:51 of the 7th, ending a fascinating run. Rodriguez will await the winner of Ray Leonard vs Vernon Forrest. GH |

Friday Night Fights Results, August 13
WBC Welterweight: Antonio Diaz vs Oba Carr (Non-Tourney) Carr controls early rounds of the fight, knocking Diaz down in the fourth. But Diaz responds well for the duration, controlling much of the battle. In the end, refs rule 96-94 Carr, 96-94 Diaz, 95-95. A draw. WBA Cruiserweight: Henry Tillman vs Fabrice Tiozzo (Non-Tourney) Tiozzo comes in badly overweight and it costs him. Tiozzo wins some close rounds, but Tillman wins several in impressive fashion, the carryover of which probably got him some close rounds in his favor. Tillman takes the split decision 97-93, 97-94, 94-96. WBA Jr. Bantamweight: #1 Khaosai Galaxy vs #5 Luis Alberto Perez Galaxy had been dominant in his first two bouts, TKO victories over Julio Cesar Borboa and Tae-Il Chang. The Nicaraguan Perez had simply been fabulously efficient, earning unanimous decision victories over Ari Blanca and the favored Rafael Orono. Many were curious as to whether Perez, known for keeping the punches coming all night long, was going to try and slug with Galaxy - which many thought would be a foolish move - or fight somewhat conservatively, knowing that, as the underdog, he'd have to fight that style perfectly to win a decision. Perez chose the latter, and that he did so seemed to stun Galaxy. Perez was content to feel things out in the opening round, banging home a pair of solid crosses to get Galaxy's attention, but staying a fair distance away to make Galaxy have to do the stalking. Every time Perez would come in on him, Galaxy would seem ready to bang it out, only to have Perez back off again. This tactic flustered Galaxy even more in the second round, where Perez was dominant. Battering home a combination to open the round, Perez looked fluid and comfortable, while Galaxy tried to force action unsuccessfully. He couldn't corner Perez and couldn't cut the ring off. Perez just peppered Galaxy with combinations and body work and was gone before he could respond. Galaxy came in with his head down in the final minute, and Perez held his head down then, after the ref knocked his arm off, crushed Galaxy with an uppercut as soon as he got upright, pummeling Galaxy for the final minute of the round. Galaxy made Perez miss early in the third and got him cornered. For the first time in the bout, Galaxy was in control, a stunning cross and a smashing uppercut pinning Perez in the corner. Perez fired back some scoring blows near the end of the round after evading Galaxy for most of the middle portion, but the round remained Galaxy's. But Perez regained control in the 4th, again making Galaxy stalk while he hit and moved. And Perez wasn't just landing duds or weak jabs. His punches were stiff, and while lacking Galaxy's power, he had enough to begin to take the steam out of Galaxy slowly. Still, Galaxy hurt Perez early in the fifth but, as he had in the third, Perez was able to stall his way through the round, dodging and moving and never letting Galaxy get on a real roll. Though the round was Galaxy's, he had yet to control the pace at any point in the bout. A dull but even 7th was bookended by a 6th and 8th that had gone as the bulk of the fight had, Perez continuing to stay in control and Galaxy firing but failing to land repeatedly, at least not siginificantly. Galaxy was desperate. In the 9th he came out firing, grabbing Perez several times as he tried to back away. Perez dodged him for much of the round, but in the final 30 seconds, Galaxy hammered home a straight right that sent Perez stumbling backward. He fell into the corner, the only thing that held him up, and survived the round. By this point, Galaxy was visibly angry. But Perez was leery, despite his magnificent effort, of leaving it in the judges' hands. So the two met at center ring and began to bang away for a furious 3 minutes. In the final minute, Perez missed with a right hand and Galaxy buried a big hook flush on Perez, sending him reeling. Galaxy pounced and Perez stumbled around, trying to get his feet under him to dodge the oncoming blows. Galaxy winged a shot and missed and Perez fired a desperation right hand...and landed it perfectly. Galaxy was stood up straight, and Perez was able to get his bearings. Galaxy got back on him, but that shot gave Perez the respite he needed to survive the 10th, and complete the upset. Perez took the unanimous decision 97-93, 96-94, 96-94 in a stunning, but perfect, performance. Galaxy had been thought to be unbeatable at this weight. It took a virtuoso performance to beat him, but it has been done. And Galaxy will dare Perez to do it again, we can be sure. Perez will now face the winner of #7 Celes Kobayashi vs #3 Fernando Montiel. GH __________________ |

Showtime Championship Boxing Results, August 14
WBA Light-Heavyweight: #2 Bob Foster vs #3 Victor Galindez Anyone who thinks Roy Jones Jr. has no competition needs to catch a tape of this fight, because Galindez - a very good fighter in his own right - is thoroughly destroyed by the powerful Foster. Foster pummels Galindez in the first round, then continues to do so in the second with a merciless beating before Galindez goes down for the count at 2:51 of round 2. Jones still has to get by Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, no easy task. But Foster is ready for whoever comes out of that bout. In fact, he came out and said after his fight that he's pulling for Jones because he'd love to be the underdog. IBF Jr. Featherweight: #1 Jeff Fenech vs #13 Jose Sanabria Sanabria had knocked off the #4 and #5 seeds already, first stopping Jesse Benavides on cuts before the refs and brass met to discuss early stoppages (Benavides had swept the first 3 rounds before the stoppage in the 4th) then decisioning a lackluster and out of shape Jose Valbuena. So Sanabria had lived somewhat of a charmed underdog life. Fenech was coming a dominant effort in which he took a unanimous decision over Emmanuel Lucero, who absorbed a genuinely frightening amount of punishment in the fight. Fenech's standard M.O. of outworking and beating an opponent into exhaustion was displayed perfect in this bout, and the fight with Sanabria was no different. Fenech batters Sanabria for 8 rounds, exhausting him, then drops him early in the 9th. Sanabria probably could have risen had he wanted to, but he was a beaten man who knew it. Ref Davey Pearl likely would have stopped it shortly after anyway. Fenech will take on #2 seed Oscar Larios for the title. WBA Jr. Lightweight: #1 Alexis Arguello vs #5 Rocky Lockridge It had happened several times throughout the tournaments. Guys expected to meet in a final jawed about each other and what they would do to each other, which angered opponents in the interim whose objective was to prevent that bout from occurring. Lockridge was the angry one here, and his camp had tried to get him worked up against Arguello, who had said very little in response to the loudmouthed #2 seed Hector Camacho. Still, with Arguello as the opponent, Lockridge's camp tried to paint HIM as disrespectful. Arguello had, as expected, breezed through his first 2 bouts, both TKO victories amassing a total of 7 rounds. Lockridge served notice with a furious comeback against #4 Sammy Serrano to take a majority decision by destroying Serrano in the final 2 rounds after having been fouled several times earlier in the fight. On this night, Arguello looked dominant from the opening bell, picking Lockridge apart before a blistering combination out of nowhere put Arguello on the seat of his pants near the end of the round. The crowd was boisterous from this point on, and the two engaged in an exciting, action-packed war. But Lockridge, despite his greatest efforts, was getting beaten to the punch too often by the tactically stellar Arguello, who opened a wide gash under Lockridge's left eye in the third. Lockridge stood firm, but Arguello was wearing him down by the minute. By the 6th, Lockridge was on a half tank, and Arguello knew it. Stepping up the aggressiveness, Arguello dropped Lockridge midway through the round and pounced on him for the remainder. Lockridge went down again early in the 7th, and withstood a beating throughout the remainder of that round as well. A huge right hand and a short hard uppercut were the culmination, Lockridge failing to respond in any fashion, and ref William Conners jumped in to halt the punishment. Postfight, the two talked and Lockridge's words to Arguello were short and clear..."beat his ass." Arguello nodded, telling Lockridge he's a great fighter and that the two will meet again down the road. But next he would await the winner of Camacho/Freitas, hoping for Camacho to answer Lockridge's request. GH _________ |

I don't know when I'll get started on it, but one thing I want to do is make it set in the same "world" as the HBF. So there will be some reporters who are featured in the HBF (such as James Reynolds) who will also appear in the MLB dynasty. |

It appears as though I have gotten all through Google I will be able to. So, basically, most of the semifinals and the first half of title fights are lost. In the subsequent 3 posts I will recap the title fights and results of those that have already occurred.
