Thanks. That one was a lot of fun. I'm watching and Terrell drops him 52 seconds in and I'm just shocked. Then Tyson smashes the hell out of him in the second, and I figure "ok, it'll be a short one." But it just played out fabulously...the kind of fight you wish you could have legitimately watched on TV.

The post-tournament era got off to a good start. All 7 champs who defended held on to their gold, but few of them were easy.

January '05: Notable Results

IBF Jr. Bantamweight: Chartchai Sasakul (9-0, 7 KO) vs Jiro Watanabe (1-1, 1 KO)

Sasakul debuts after being signed from the WBO, where he ran off an impressive string of 9 victories without a defeat in 2004. Watanabe was an upset loser to Katsuhige Kawashima in the second round of the tournament, where Watanabe was a #2 seed but was eliminated by a questionable stoppage on cuts in a fight where he led on all three cards. So with something to prove and fighting angry, Watanabe may not have been the best opponent for Sasakul - who fought 9 times in 12 months - to debut against.

Sasakul comes out firing, and has Watanabe in serious trouble in the third, battering him and raising noticeable swelling above his left eye. The lump grows and grows as the fight goes on, but Watanabe starts to piece things together. Sasakul goes down in the 8th and is put down again in the 10th, this time for good.

Jiro Watanabe KO 10 Chartchai Sasakul

WBA Jr. Middleweight: Buster Drayton (3-1-2, 1 KO) vs Sean Mannion (1-1)

Drayton makes the jump from the WBO to the big leagues.

No cuts, no swelling, no action.

No win for Drayton, as Mannion takes the unanimous decision fighting an economical fight as opposed to Drayton's relentless but unsuccessful assault (landing only 15% of his punches).

Sean Mannion UD 10 Buster Drayton (97-94, 97-94, 96-93)

WBC Featherweight: Juan LaPorte (1-1) vs Marcos Villasana (2-1)

Villasana sets a frenetic pace that seems to overwhelm LaPorte. Lots of heavy shots, including a dominant 3rd round by LaPorte. But in the fifth, Villasana lands several hard shots to the head and LaPorte simply doesn't respond. He doesn't go down, but after a delayed reaction and jellylegs, ref Jay Edison jumps in to save him.

We still haven't seen the real Juan LaPorte in the FBA yet.

Marcos Villasana TKO 5 Juan LaPorte

IBF Lightweight: Edwin Rosario (2-1, 2 KO) vs Stevie Johnston (3-1)

Interesting matchup here. Rosario spends the first two rounds beating the stuffing out of Johnston, who is unable to stick and move and is getting tagged by everything Rosario throws. The third is even before Johnston exerts his will in the 4th, moving a bit more freely and letting his hands go. He's evading Rosario's shots much better now and seems a bit quicker.

The middle rounds are even, and Johnston is throwing a truckload of punches, successfully putting Rosario on the defensive. But Rosario finds openings in the 8th and 9th, pushing Johnston around and dictating the pace again.

Johnston takes the final round and Rosario turns away from an effort by Johnston to congratulate him after the bout, angered by three fouls by Johnston including a low blow that cost Johnston a point...

...and the fight. Johnston wins from one judge 95-94, but the other two score it 95-95. The USA Today scorecard had it 96-95 for Rosario, who felt robbed after the bout.

Not sure when, but consider a rematch likely. Rosario has vowed a knockout.

Stevie Johnston Maj. Draw Edwin Rosario

More bouts of note to come

Have to agree with Kenyan_Cheena that Tyson-Terrell fight sounded like a boatload of fun to watch and Rosario-Johnston seem pretty good as well, nice to see the post-tournment FBA getting off to such a great start.

January '05: Fights of Note Cont.

IBF Middleweight: Sumbu Kalambay (3-1, 1 KO) vs Andrew Council (0-2)
Kalambay was incredibly impressive during the IBF tournament, particularly in his stoppage of #2 seed Gerald McLellan. This seemed like a good bout to get himself a good showing and back into the title hunt against a twice-disappointing Andrew Council.

What resulted is a decision that outraged many, particularly Kalambay.

Sumbu throws more than 100 punches per round compared with Council's 40. Kalambay clearly dominates 3 rounds. Council doesn't clearly win one. Rounds were admittedly close, but usually that tips toward the more aggressive, pace-dictating fighter.

Not here.

Council not only wins, but does so led by absurd margins on two cards, leaving Kalambay virtually apoplectic.

Andrew Council SD 10 Sumbu Kalambay (99-92 (), 97-94 (), 95-96)

WBA Heavyweight: Axel Schulz (3-2-1) vs Larry Holmes (3-1, 2 KOs)

Schulz moves up from the WBO. He should fire his manager for having him debut against a pissed off Larry Holmes.

Some nasty headwork from both leaves Schulz on the short end, gashed under the left eye. Holmes then splits his lip in round 2, and Schulz spends the next 8 rounds getting pounded. He's dropped in the ninth, but survives the distance.

Welcome to the big leagues, Axel.

Larry Holmes UD 10 Axel Schulz (100-89, 100-89, 99-90)

WBA Jr. Bantamweight: Khaosai Galaxy (3-1, 3 KO) vs Ju-Do Chun (0-2)

The Thai Tyson looks to march toward a title shot, to get the belt everyone thought would be his already.

Through 3 rounds, Galaxy batters Chun and the fight looks like it will be over pretty quickly.

But early in the 4th, Chun lands a slicing cross that rips open Galaxy's right eyelid. The blood is pouring out into his eye. Galaxy paws at it but is obviously affected, and Chun takes advantage, landing several solid shots. But Galaxy makes it through the round and his corner goes to work.

The doctor checks out Galaxy and lets him continue.

Galaxy starts the round with the cut in better shape but still open and flowing. Chun lands an uppercut early and the blood flies and spurts again. Galaxy is led to the physician for a second time, and is again allowed to continue.

Galaxy lands a pair of brutal crosses, but Chun gets a counter cross off the finds that eye again. The cut is now a gaping wound and the blood is flowing freely down Galaxy's face.

This time, the doctor says it's over. In stunning fashion - and some terrible luck - Khaosai Galaxy has lost for a second time in five bouts.

The belief remains that Galaxy will ultimately rule this division. But his start has been shocking to say the least. And he'll have until at least May to regroup.

Ju-Do Chun TKO 5 Khaosai Galaxy

That's all the recaps for January. I'll post after I add the WBO guys and do those bouts for January to identify any fighters who may be eligible to move up. The biggest name who may be eligible after this month...Ike Quartey. If he beats Maurice Blocker, Quartey will be up for bidding.

Ouch bad breaks for Kalambay and Galaxy, I would hate to be Galaxy's next foe since you know he'll be looking to punish the poor bastard. Schluz manager should be beaten before he's fired and afterwards as well for even thinking of matching Axel with Holmes much less actually letting it happen.

Yes, the Galaxy cut I envision being much like Klitschko's was against Lewis, perhaps worse. It was bad to start and was worsened three times. And losing to a far inferior opponent like this will certainly hurt his ranking. The odds are strongly against Montiel (the current champion) fighting Galaxy unless he absolutely has to. So Khaosai has some work to do.

True, he does seem to have a bit of a road to travel before getting into title contention but we both know that Galaxy is far to good not to get there eventually.

Well, he's actually, as it stands, still the #3 contender for the belt. He won't fight again until at least June, though, so other guys stand to gain ground or pass him by then.

Montiel can fight whoever he wants for his first defense, then he must fight someone in the top 5. Odds are he will not choose Galaxy. But he has to fight the #1 contender by the end of the year. Galaxy will need to get cracking, and since his rating is so high he really needs to fight the best guys to move up. I will be shocked if he gets a title shot this year, but stranger things have happened. Maybe luck will smile on him a bit for once.

February Title Fight Recaps

IBF Featherweight Title Fight: Vicente Saldivar (4-0, 3 KO) vs Danny Lopez (2-2, 1 KO)

Saldivar has been greatly impressive, and his first defense proves to be an easy one. He batters Lopez, whose right eye begins to swell grotesquely abruptly about 2 minutes into the fight. It goes from bad to worse for him as Saldivar continues to pummel him, including a fourth round that sees Lopez absorb a frightening amount of punishment. Ref Jimmy Gardiner could be accused easily of letting this go on too long, but Saldivar ultimately decided that himself, knocking Lopez cold at 2:53 of the 4th round.

Vicente Saldivar KO 4 Danny Lopez

IBF Cruiserweight Title Fight: Imamu Mayfield (4-0, 2 KO) vs Michael Greer (2-2, 1 KO)

After winning the title from Kelvin Davis in a hard fought affair, Mayfield was hoping for some easier times here in his first defense. But Greer's style is not at all conducive, as he tries to swarm Mayfield, throwing more than 100 punches per round. Mayfield spends virtually the entire fight on the defensive, fighting outside and sticking well to his game plan, while Greer applied all the pressure. And that pressure earned Greer some points with the judges. But in the end, the efficient attack of Mayfield, landing more than 40% of his blows, gets the nod as Greer, for all his efforts, lands only 11% of his own shots.

Mayfield takes a close but unanimous decision, hanging on after he tires late, 145-143, 144-142, 144-142/

Imamu Mayfield UD 15 Michael Greer

WBC Light-Heavyweight Title Fight: Antonio Tarver (4-0, 1 KO) vs Chris Finnegan (1-1)

The January slate of title fights seemed to see more "at-risk" bouts than February's batch, and this is no exception. But Finnegan sensed his opportunity and didn't want to let it slip away. Tarver pummels him in the first and drops him in the fifth, but Finnegan plows ahead. Tarver gets a little to relaxed, and spends rounds 9-11 getting picked apart. He gets his head on right for the final three rounds, but loses a point along the way for low blows. It goes the full 15, and Finnegan's effort draws some support from the crowd.
In the end, it's a good thing Tarver wakes up late, because his lackadasical efforts late almost cost him. He remains the champ in a close, but unanimous decision, 143-140 on all three cards.

Antonio Tarver UD 15 Chris Finnegan

IWBC Cruiserweight Title Fight: Jean-Marc Mormeck (4-0, 2 KO) vs Jose Maria Flores (1-1-1, 1 KO)

Mormeck is in complete control of the bout, getting inside on Flores who is trying to work Mormeck from the outside without much success. But in the 8th, Mormeck leaves himself open, and a Flores combination puts him down to the canvas. Flores senses opportunity and pounces, but Mormeck survives. Flores tries to keep up the pressure, feeling the belt around his waist. That proves his undoing, as Mormeck sufficiently recovered from the knockdown and turned up the attack, battering Flores in the 9th, then dropping him twice in the 10th before his follow-up assault was stopped by ref Robert Byrd. Good job by Mormeck to respond in the face of adversity.

Jean-Marc Mormeck TKO 10 Jose Maria Flores

More to come....

February Title Fight Recaps Cont.

WBC Bantamweight Title Fight: Carlos Zarate (4-0, 4 KO) vs Steve Dotse (0-2)

How incredible would it be for a winless fighter to take out an undefeated champion? Well keep wondering, because it sure as hell wasn't happening here. Zarate sends a message, writing it on Dotse's face for three rounds. Dotse tries to stand in, a tactic that lasts a round. He scored, but Zarate scored more, and harder, blows. Dotse is dropped in the second, blasted for the rest of the round, which leads to his right eye swelling quickly. Zarate then pummels Dotse for 1:45 in the third before ref Elmo Adolph says enough is enough. Zarate, now 5-0, has looked virtually invincible.

Carlos Zarate TKO 3 Steve Dotse

WBA Bantamweight Title Fight: Eder Jofre (4-0, 2 KO) vs Alfonzo Zamora (3-1, 2 KO)

Zamora packs a whallop, so it was surprising to see Jofre choose him as his first defense. Even more surprising is the ease with which Jofre disposes of him, following an even opening round. Jofre drops Zamora in the second, then hammers him in the third, putting him down twice, the second time for good. A scintillating effort from Jofre. Could he and Carlos Zarate be a unification bout down the line?

Eder Jofre KO 3 Alfonzo Zamora

IBF Middleweight Title Fight: Bernard Hopkins (4-0, 3 KO) vs Iran Barkley (4-1)

A tough customer, Barkley had been impressive in each of his prior bouts...except his loss in the tournament semifinal to Hopkins. Barkley clamored for a rematch, and Hopkins obliged him. In typical Hopkins fashion, he took 4 rounds to get going, surrendering 3 of the first 4 to Barkley. But from there on, it was a virtuoso performance by Hopkins, who rolled off shots that landed and made many of them miss. Barkley suffered swelling and a cut near his eye that made things tougher as the fight progressed, and Hopkins put him down in the 12th. But Barkley came to fight, as he always does, and made it through the 15 on guts. But guts rarely overtake talent, and here Barkley was outclassed for a second time.

Bernard Hopkins UD 15 Iran Barkley

You made a small mistake here should be Jofre instead of Zarate right.

Man it might just be me but it seem that the Feb title fights have been alot easier so far for the champ's then Jan's.

February '05 Notable Results

WBA Welterweight: Rafael Pineda (2-1, 1 KO) vs Clyde Gray (0-1)

Pineda steps into the ring for the first time since his championship dreams came to a halt at the hands of Luis Rodriguez. But Pineda's 1-round destruction of Felix Trinidad in the tournament's opening round still has him on the minds of many as a force to be dealt with. Now, he's on the mind of Clyde Gray as well, as Pineda obliterates Gray in 2:39, ref Jose Medina-Solar having seen enough of Gray's head getting snapped back and forth. No objection from Gray's corner at the stoppage. Pineda still looks to be very dangerous.

Rafael Pineda TKO 1 Clyde Gray

WBA Middleweight: 'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler (3-1, 3 KO) vs Dick Tiger (2-1)

Both of these men were decisioned by champion Rodrigo Valdez, Tiger in the semifinal and Hagler in the shocking title bout. So both came in angry, looking to make a statement. Tiger starts the first round well, sticking Hagler with several hooks early. But a big uppercut from Hagler at the midpoint of the round brings the pace to a halt, crushing Tiger and relegating him to spending the final 1:30 holding on for dear life. Tiger regroups in the second for an action packed round that sees the two trade nonstop for 3 minutes in a warzone. Hagler's eye shows some swelling, but his corner keeps it under control. However, having seen numerous recent stoppages on account of swelling, Hagler wasn't taking chances. For the next 7 rounds, Tiger's only bright spots came when he slowed the pace. But that happened sparingly. It takes a great fighter to dominate someone the caliber of Dick Tiger...Hagler is a great fighter. Tiger is down in the fourth and is nearly put out cold when he's dropped again in the 9th. Tiger remarkably gets back to his feet, but Hagler smells the end and pounces. After several hooks to the head and Tiger slumped against the ropes, ref Luis Guzman realizes he needs to jump in.
Hagler knows if he takes care of business, he'll get his mandatory shot against Valdez by the end of the year. And he's hell bent on making it happen, with a very different result.

'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler TKO 9 Dick Tiger

WBA Featherweight: Michael Brodie (0-1) vs Davey Kotey (6-0, 1 KO)

Kotey debuts in the big leagues after having his contract purchased from the WBO. Brodie keeps pace with Kotey, but Kotey lands more than half of his blows, en route to a unanimous decision in his WBA debut, 97-91, 95-93, 95-94. The latter two cards were watching something else, because there's no way the fight was that close.

Davey Kotey UD 10 Michael Brodie

WBA Featherweight: Erik Morales (2-1, 1 KO) vs Barry McGuigan (1-1)

McGuigan reportedly was stricken with the flu for a good part of training, and came into the bout undertrained. Still, he was not about to pass up the chance to make a good showing against an opponent such as Morales. This wasn't going to be pretty, but it was going to be fun. Morales dominates McGuigan early, finding and exploiting every opening and after a round the bout looks like a mismatch. McGuigan comes out firing in the second though, landing a thudding hook to the head early. Morales counters with a stiff right hand, but McGuigan batters him with a combination and the two go toe-to-toe. The crowd is into it, and McGuigan seems to come out on top of the exchange. Morales lands a pair of uppercuts late in the round in an effort to steal it in the closing moments. McGuigan can't find the holes in the third, and Morales seems too quick for him again, much as he did in the opening stanza. But McGuigan opens the fourth with a hard uppercut and a wild right hand that lands flush, snapping Morales' head violently. Morales goes defensive for much of the rest of the round, visibly shaken, and he does so effectively. But his offense is little and late, and McGuigan has his first clear round of the fight. Morales starts the fifth in control, but McGuigan lands the same uppercut, wild right combination that shook Morales in the 4th, and again Morales looks in trouble. McGuigan traps him against the ropes and the two trade, with McGuigan again coming out on top. Morales is firing, but McGuigan isn't letting up and the bell ends with an eruption from the crowd. McGuigan is making it a fight again. An early uppercut in the 6th from McGuigan is met with a headbutt from Morales, which draws a warning. The pace slows a bit, but Morales accomplishes what he needs to in backing McGuigan off a bit. On 2 cards, the bout is even through 6, with Morales up on the third. But the 7th would be McGuigan's downfall, and where the illness during training may have come into play. Morales looks more fresh, and McGuigan is put on the canvas twice. By round's end, despite the swelling around Morales' left eye, it's McGuigan who looks flat out exhausted. He tries to hang in there in the 8th, but it's clear Morales has taken control and, without a knockdown, ref Fred Hernandez leaps in to call a halt to the fight at 2:15 of the 8th round.

Erik Morales TKO 8 Barry McGuigan

More to come...

Thanks for the catch. I had Zarate on the brain thinking of the potential unification bout

Yes, the February title fights are done, and they were easier than those in January, which saw Tyson nearly lose and several others in trouble before pulling it out. We'll see what March holds (it should include the crowning of the last remaining belt, the WBA Welterweight fight, after Vernon Forrest and Luis Rodriguez meet).

No problem, it was a small mistake can happen to anyone but yeah hopefully that unification comes about though I admit I don't know alot about either Zarate or Jorfe expect they were great fighters and that fight should be fun.

Oh yeah lets go Rodriguez crush Vernon, hopefully to the point that he never fights again.

February '05 Notable Results Cont.

WBA Welterweight: Felix Trinidad (0-1) vs Juan Manuel Gonzalez (0-2-1)

It was last March 6 that Tito Trinidad stepped in the ring and was battered by Rafael Pineda. He said he'd be back, that the fight shouldn't have been stopped. He sounded like an angry man looking to get back in and claim what he thought should be his. And then he was gone. A little more than 11 months later, Felix Trinidad stepped back into the ring, against a hand-picked opponent, and the result was predictible. Trinidad put Gonzalez on the canvas 28 seconds into the fight. He rose at 8, but was smashed for two minutes before ref Joe Cortez said enough was enough. Critics pointed out that Gonzalez is now winless in four bouts, and are anxious to see who Trinidad will fight next. He said, simply, "Anybody. I'm back."

Felix Trinidad TKO 1 Juan Manuel Gonzalez

WBA Jr. Lightweight: Genaro Hernandez (3-1) vs Rafael 'Bazooka' Limon (4-0, 3 KO)

Limon makes his debut after being signed from the WBO against a tough customer in Hernandez. But it's Limon, who many anticipate will create a stir in the division, who debuts with a bang. Both fighters are a bloody mess when the fight concludes. The 6th round proves costly for Hernandez, who is split open across the bridge of his nose and also hurts his hand during the round. He slices Limon on his forehead in the 7th, but Limon just keeps firing and Hernandez is wearing down quickly. The ringside physician considers stopping the bout twice in the 8th, but lets Hernandez continue both times. Limon, however, does not, knocking him out at 2:30 of the 8th, to improve to 5-0.

Rafael 'Bazooka' Limon KO 8 Genaro Hernandez

More to come...

February '05 Notable Results Cont.

IBF Jr. Welterweight: Ubaldo Sacco (2-1-1) vs Zab Judah (3-1, 2 KO)

The first round is a thriller, with both fighters swinging freely and landing powerful blows. Judah's left eye begins to swell a bit, but it seems to flip a switch in him that gets him on track. He pounds Sacco in round 2 and 3. Unfortunately, somebody forgot to tell Judah it was a 10 round fight. His aggressiveness leaves, he gets sloppy and almost disinterested, the arrogant punk in him shining like a beacon. Perhaps the decision, 97-94, 97-93, 97-93, for Sacco, will turn that light out. Don't consider it likely.

Ubaldo Sacco UD 10 Zab Judah

Also,

WBA Featherweight: Naseem Hamed UD 10 Hector Acero-Sanchez (Hamed is a whirling dirvish all night, dropping Acero-Sanchez 4 times. Perhaps Hamed is finally getting his act together.)

IBF Jr. Middleweight: Oscar De La Hoya UD 10 Mamadou Thiam (De La Hoya is masterful in his first bout since the upset loss to Maurice Hope in the tournament final. He's targeting Hope by year-end.
