Laguna, Molina Impress
Weir upsets McKart MILWAUKEE -- Ismael Laguna held off a challenge from the tough, but outclassed, Billy Schwer in the main event at the Mecca here in Milwaukee. As we've seen in a number of 1 vs 16 matchups it seems so far in the FBA's fledgling history, the #1 seed was dominated in the opening round, but would later regroup to win in convincing fashion. This time, after Laguna dominated the second round, Schwer came back and dominated the third, rattling Laguna twice during the round. This caused Laguna to turn the fourth into, primarily, a clinchfest, though he mounted enough offense to make the round near even. But the tactic also seemed to suck all momentum away from Schwer who was dominated for the remainder of the fight. Schwer was dropped in the ninth, as Laguna won the bout 97-92, 97-92, 96-93. John-John Molina (#4, WBC Jr. Lightweight) stopped Goyo Vargas (#13) in the sixth in dominant fashion, dropping Vargas in the fifth and sixth before referee James Condon jumped in to save Vargas from further punishment at the 2:51 mark of round 6. The evening's upset came as Bronco McKart (#5, IBF Jr. Middleweight) was knocked cold in the second by Charlie Weir (#12). The opening round was a toe-to-toe slugfest that was going evenly until a savage uppercut from Weir midway through the round snapped McKart's head back violently. McKart's offense sputtered for the rest of the round and, right at the opening bell for round 2, Weir struck McKart with a crushing hook that sent him into the ropes and was the beginning of the end. An argument could be made that referee Genaro Rodriguez could have stopped it on his own, but he said McKart was throwing enough jabs not to have his opportunity to advance taken away from him in that fashion. Weir would take care of that himself, with an uppercut - hook combination that flattened McKart for the count at 1:37 of round 2. In other bouts: WBA Bantamweight #7 Alfonzo Zamora def.#10 Daorung Chuvatana by UD 95-93, 96-94, 95-93 IBF Jr. Featherweight #8 Emmanuel Lucero def. #9 Leo Cruz by UD 98-94, 97-94, 96-95 WBA Jr. Bantamweight #4 Rafael Orono def. #13 Peter Culshaw by UD 96-94, 96-95, 96-95 GH |

Rocky Mountain Low
Belbouli first No. 1 seed to lose DENVER -- At Michnichol Sports Arena, Taofuik Belbouli's title hopes came to a crashing halt. The IBF Cruiserweight tournament's #1 seed dominated longshot Young Joe Louis for 7 rounds -- including a pair of knockdowns in the first round and another in the fifth -- before his dominance ended in a flash. Belbouli was eliminated after Louis landed a crushing shot to the ribs that Belbouli was unable to recover from, knocking him out at 1:42 of the 8th round. A stunned Belbouli declined to comment after the fight and was taken to the hospital for X-rays. "I simply had to wait for my spot," Louis said after the fight. "He left it open and I did exactly what I said I was going to do." Louis surely didn't plan on hitting the deck three times before getting there, however, but he declined to talk about his problems early in the fight. "What matters is I won, I advance, and I'm a step closer to the title," Louis said. In a WBA Bantamweight affair, #2 Rafael Marquez knocked down #15 Raul Perez en route to a unanimous 99-85 victory across the board. Marquez was too quick and too strong for Perez, who it seemed was out in the 8th, but got to his feet at 9 and was allowed to continue. Referee Max Parker was leaving Perez every opportunity and other than the knockdown in the 8th, he was up by 5 in each other instance. In a WBC Lightweight affair, Hilmer Kenty (#3) was too slick for #14 George Scott, easily working a unanimous decision victory 98-90, 98-90, 96-92. Sot Chitalada (#5, IBF Flyweight) pummeled Fidel Bassa (#12), gashing open just below his right eye and scoring a flash knockdown early in the 8th. 96-88, 95-89, 96-88 in the unanimous decision. Also on the card: WBA Middleweight: #7 Howard Eastman beat #10 Quincy Taylor in a close, controversial, but unanimous decision, 95-94 across the board. WBA Flyweight: #9 Pongsaklek Wongjongkam had a surprisingly easy time with #8 Irene Pacheco, winning a unanimous decision victory 98-90, 98-89, 97-91. Sunday Night Fights: Results Jan. 10
Lopezes dominate, Klitschko wins easily At Flyweight and Featherweight, a Lopez reigned supreme: at least for a night. WBA Flyweight favorite Ricardo Lopez easily defeated Tadashi Tomori (#16 seed) in the first round tournament matchup, and Danny Lopez stopped Enrique Sanchez in the fifth in their IBF Featherweight showdown. Ricardo was leading 89-80, 89-80, 90-80 after 9 rounds when referee Fred Hernandez halted the fight as Tomori was unable to answer the bell. Tomori was down twice in the 9th, but had been taking a beating throughout the bout, unable to halt Lopez' pinpoint attack. Swelling around both eyes had limited Tomori's vision since the 7th, and at that point it was better for Hernandez to save him from 3 added minutes of punishment. Danny Lopez (#2 seed) halted Sanchez' (#15) title hopes with a 5th round TKO, calling on referee Larry Rozadilla to halt the bout after administering a savage beating in the round. Sanchez was dropped early and never recovered, as Lopez was aggressive from the opening bell, dropping Sanchez once in each round except the 4th. Elsewhere on the card, Wladimir Klitschko (WBA Heavyweight #5 seed) won a convincing unanimous decision over #12 Fres Oquendo, and Wilfredo Vazquez (IBF Featherweight #8) took a majority decision over #9 Lehlo Ledwaba. In a WBC Jr. Featerweight bout, #6 Soo-Hwan Hong won a unanimous decision over #11 Jorge Julio, while at Flyweight in the IBF tournament, #2 Myung-Woo Yuh also took a unanimous decision, over #15 Hi-Sup Shin. Results From England
Fenech dominates in main event IBF Jr. Featherweight #1 seed Jeff Fenech made quick work of Ruben Valdez, knocking him out in the 2nd round of their first round tournament matchup. Valdez could muster no offense, as the slugging Fenech opened up after a cautious first minute and landed a hook that essentially ended Valdez' forward movement for the rest of the fight. Valdez ended the first hanging onto the ropes, and Fenech wouldn't let up in the second. A series of ripping hooks to the body knocked the air out of Valdez before a stunning combination dropped him, seeing him counted out at 2:40 of the second. In the co-feature, Corey Spinks (IBF Welterweight #5) but on a boxing clinic with a unanimous decision victory over #12 Michael Trabant. Though Spinks never dropped Trabant, he was in complete control of the entire affair, seeming to toy with Trabant who couldn't keep up with Spinks and, when in front of him, couldn't land. Spinks won this one easily, 100-91, 100-92, 100-91. In other action: WBC Flyweight: #7 Prudencio Cardona vs #10 Erbito Salvarria (Cardona SD 10, 97-95, 95-96, 96-94...Surprisingly little action for Flyweight bout is likely what kept crowd from being overly outraged, but most ringside observers thought Salvarria won the fight) WBC Cruiserweight: #3 Luis Azille vs #14 Thomas Hansvol (Hansvol MD 10, 96-96, 96-95, 96-95: Back and forth, pretty slow paced fight. Not much action. Judges probably got it right) IBF Jr. Bantamweight: #5 Hiroshi Kawashima vs #12 Satoshi Iida (another upset special, as Iida wins UD 10 in fight that was closer than two scorecards would seem to indicate 6 rounds were within 3 "points". 98-91, 99-93, 96-95) IBF Lightweight: #5 Orzubek Nazarov vs #12 Harold Warren (Nazarov UD 10, obliterates Warren, knocking him down twice in the 8th. 98-90, 99-90, 98-89). Results: FBA Hits Detoit
Duran, Holyfield impress Roberto Duran ran over Victoriano Sosa in Detroit, and Evander Holyfield battered Ron Lyle to both advance in their first round efforts. Duran, the WBA's #1 seeded lightweight, pummeled Victoriano Sosa as expected, knocking him down once in the 7th and twice in the 8th, the latter for good. Referee John Coyle acknowledged he likely wouldn't have let Sosa go on even if he had gotten up, but with 8 seconds left in the round he was willing to give him the chance to at least end the bout on his feet...or at least his stool. Duran was too strong from the get-go, though some were concerned when he essentially took round 4 off, fearing an injury. But he resumed work in round 5, and from there coasted with punishment Sosa was simply not strong enough to handle. Holyfield (WBC Heavyweight, #2) was equally impressive against Ron Lyle, though Lyle mounted more of an offensive than Sosa managed against Duran. In fact, Lyle had Holyfield in trouble in round 4 before a dazzling uppercut from Evander sent him stumbling backwards before crashing to the canvas. Lyle's eyes had already begun to swell, his corner would argue the result or Holyfield's head work, and this would ultimately be Lyle's undoing as, after two more rounds of punishment, referee Brian Garry stopped the fight shortly after a Holyfield barrage to open the 7th. In other bouts: WBA Light-Heavyweight: #7 Reggie Johnson vs #10 Montel Griffin (Johnson UD 10, dominates the first 3 rounds, dropping Griffin in the first and twice in the 3rd before essentially cruising the remainder of the fight) WBC Lightweight: #6 Juan Nazario vs #11 Greg Haugen (Nazario TKO 7, as swelling around Haugen's eyes was too bad to go on. Haugen, typically, leads with his face, casting defense to the side) IBF Flyweight: #7 Betulio Gonzalez vs #10 German Torres (Torres KO 1 on a huge uppercut counter after a Gonzalez cross missed badly) WBC Middleweight: #7 Shinji Takehara vs #10 Thomas Tate (Takehara UD 10, 97-92, 97-91, 97-91, in dominating fashion, dropping Tate in the 4th and 8th) GH |

Results: Sunday Night Fights Jan. 17
From the Orpheum in Boston IBF Light-Heavyweight: #1 Virgil Hill vs #16 Peter Venancio (Hill UD 10, a closer fight than most expected, but a clear decision for Hill nonetheless. No knockdowns, as Hill wins 98-92, 97-93, 98-93). WBC Jr. Bantamweight: #2 Mark Johnson vs #15 Idelfonso Martinez (Johnson, KO 3, nothing much to say here other than Johnson dominated. Martinez landed a couple of jabs, but no punches of note, and Johnson assaulted him to start round 3, with the KO coming at 0:29). WBC Featherweight: #3 Yong-Kyun Park vs #14 Angel Chacon (Chacon MD 10. Fairly dull fight, many felt that because Park never was the aggressor, Chacon's aggression early in the fight earned him close rounds in the latter rounds even though his tempo slowed as well. 97-94, 96-93, 95-95) WBC Jr. Bantamweight: #4 Willie Jensen vs #13 Jorge Luis Gonzalez (Jensen UD 10, an easy night. Not much action, but Jensen did more than Gonzalez, whose "points" high was 8. 98-92, 98-92, 99-91) WBC Bantamweight: #6 Thanomchit Sukothia vs #11 Chan-Yong Park (Sukothia UD 10, cruising easily. 98-92, 99-91, 96-94). WBC Flyweight: #6 Luis Alberto Estaba vs #11 Muangchai Kittikasem (Estaba KO 3...Kittikasem put on an exceptional first 2 rounds, but was knocked out at 1:12 of the 3rd). GH |
