Paulie Ayala has secured a crack at Wilfredo Gomez's WBF Jr Featherweight crown. Ayala took a split decision points victory over Jeff Fenech in the Final Eliminator contest. The American will be hoping that Gomez can deal with a pending 'Regional Champion' nomination to the belt. It is unlikely that Ayala will be seen again before the bout and you can understand why. After his two contests against the Australian hardman he is entitled to 'put his feet up'. There were no knockdowns in the contest and Ayala did enough work to warrant the points decision. The upcoming bout may be Ayala's best chance to wear the crown for some time, the WBF has yet to decide whether or not to disband the weight class, and even if they decide to continue it there is likely to be a strong migration to the division from the surrounding weights.

The proposed fight could give Ayala the opportunity to avenge a tenth round cuts stoppage against Gomez for the vacant title. At the time Ayala was ahead on two of the judges scorecards.

Surprising result - Ayala just seems to fight Fenech well in your world. I can't believe Ayala could handle the pressure of a prime Fenech seeing how he didn't hold up well under Barrea (though he was past his prime a little).

Yeah, he seems to be his 'bogey' fighter. After a break I think I'll match them again. Have you got anyone that particularly outperforms/underperforms in your universe?

In the first defence of his WBF Heavyweight Title, Jack Johnson's unbeaten run came to an end. The unpredictable but dangerous Mike Weaver caused a huge eigth round TKO upset against his fellow countryman.

The warning signs for Johnson were evident from virtually the opening bell. After starting brightly Johnson fell to one knee after vicious right hook to the body from the challenger. After his early setback Johnson found his rythmn and built up a solid points advantage which was endorsed with a sixth round right cross which put Weaver down. The challenger at this stage seemed to be 'running out of gas', however in the following round Weaver unleashed a huge right cross which sent the champion to the canvas. In the eigth round 'the unlikely' became 'the reality' as Weaver fired a wicked left hook to the midrift of Johnson, who with one knee on the deck and his right hand in the air, waved goodbye to his belt. Whilst Weaver's camp were digesting the shock victory Johnson was diagnosed as suffering from a broken rib, and a sore ego.

Joe Louis will now have to be patient before his crack at the WBF Title. The 'Brown Bomber' had just won the right to a mandatory defence with a devastating fourth round TKO victory against Ken Norton, not only was this fight carrying the 'final eliminator' tag but also Norton's NABF belt with it. The challenger dominated from the opening bell and would have to fancy his chances of overpowering Weaver, if and when he gets the chance. Weaver will now have the opportunity of two 'softer' defences against a top 20 rated contender, and a Regional Champion. It is likely that Louis will defend his NABF title on the undercard of Weaver's first defence.

Lennox Lewis 'dethroned' EBU Champion Vitali Klitscko via a one sided seventh round TKO stoppage. Klitschko was down in the second round after a right cross from Lewis found its mark, at the beginning of the seventh the outgoing champion was deemed as unable to defend himself, and the combination of being out on his feet and heavy swelling around the right eye brought the fight to an end.

There were also victories for Larry Holmes, Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali against Alfredo Evangelista, Ron Lyle and Jim Braddock respectively.

The NABF have formally sanctioned a sixteen boxer tournament involving American/Canadian fighters prominent through the 1980's. A few big names will be missing from the tournament which will carry the added prize of a mandatory crack at current champion Joe Louis NABF crown. Larry Holmes declined the offer of a place amongst the sixteen, citing that he was more interested in a challenge for the world crown. Current World Champion Mike Weaver will also be missing for obvious reasons. The sixteen contenders and their current WBF rankings are as follows.
