...Within moments, a considerable portion of the audience started booing, angered that what they had expected and hoped would be a six round dominant display was suddenly over. However, those in the know (and there were plenty of them) stood and applauded, thrilled that their man, their champion, had achieved victory with next to no trouble.
Norton himself had a smile showing from ear-to-ear, and his words in the post-fight interview confirmed his contented disposition. "I don't think we could have asked for a better outcome," he said. "You know, I really trained hard for this fight, and I didn't expend too much energy in getting the win. So it's all good, I gotta say." ESPN's Bill Farris asked Norton what he thought about the fight being stopped so quickly. "Well, I don't wanna sound like a braggart, but that was a helluva right hand I tagged him with," Norton replied. "I didn't get a good look at the cut, but if the doctor thought it should be stopped, who am I to complain, man? Seriously, I don't think it would have lasted much longer, anyway." Norton went on to acknowledge the "incredible support and warm wishes" that the people of San Diego had given him in the lead up to tonight's event. "I wanted to give all of you a great show tonight," he said. "I must admit, I was more nervous before this fight than the first two, because fighting here at home is just a real thrill and I was worried that I'd get stage fright or something, I guess. But I'm just relieved that it worked out so nicely." Five minutes later, Norton was on his way back to the dressing room, the applause and chants of his people carrying him the entire way... Hello, everyone.
My home PC has got some major problems with it at the moment, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to continue with the HBF. Hopefully sooner rather than later (or, heaven forbid, never). |

I can sympathize with this problem. Been having problems along those lines myself. Bear Quote:

Unfortunately, you may be better off finding a local Computer/network geek and paying them to help you. It'll take less time and will cost less flesh in the long run. (I had a Compaq three computers ago - trust me when I say that I can empathize.)

The guy who maintains our company's PCs is in here today, and I asked him earlier how to fix the problem. He said I might need a new hard drive, but I'm going to try the solution I found from HP before considering that. |

k_c's home PC, latest update:
Looks like I'll have to perform a Destructive System Recovery. I was able to solve the problem with the PC being unable to even get as far as the desktop, but now I'm back where I was a week ago. The machine loads up, gets to the desktop, works fine for maybe ten minutes and then falls asleep. Last night, I was able to get it to work long enough for me to be able to copy a bunch of vital, personal files to CD. These were related to TBCB, OOTP6, my novel and a few other odds and ends (including my precious download of Hagler-Hearns). So at least the HBF is safe on disk. For about a day, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to recover anything. The dude at Compaq suggested the DSR, but he said I had to perform it "using the CDs which are shipped with your computer". Now, we weren't given any recovery CDs when we purchased the PC in May '03, so I've sent off another reply querying this. If he doesn't reply by 5pm Sydney time (just under 5 hours from now), I won't be able to do anything to rectify the problem until at least Monday. |

I wish you didn't live half way around the world; I have ten PCs and monitors that are all in excellent condition sitting in my conference room after a system upgrade this past weekend. (Thunder is getting a monitor if he ever drops in.) Good luck my Aussie friend.

Speaking of spare PCs, they'll be upgrading mine next month to a (coincidentally) Compaq. I'll be taking my current work PC home with me when that new one arrives. |

Well, I've just received the instructions from Compaq on creating the recovery CDs. I'm going to try it out tonight, so hopefully my PC will be back up and running some time over the weekend.

Latest Home PC update:
Damn, this machine is driving me crazy! Yesterday, I went through the process of backing up the hard drive to CD in preparation for the Destructive System Recovery. But now, without having done the DSR, the PC seems to be working fine! To say I'm bemused is an understatement. I'm really not sure whether I should go ahead with the DSR or not. It is tempting to start with a clean slate, as the DSR would erase a s%#tload of stuff on the PC (mostly my step-daughters mp3's) that I'm too busy to delete myself. Anyway, at least I'm now ready should I have to do it in the future. I think I'll just see how the machine goes for the next couple of days. It's 20 to 11 over here, and I'm a bit too tired to start on the next post in the HBF. Anyway, I now have to re-install Title Bout (and OOTP6) as I'd uninstalled them in preparation for the DSR. |

Well, I ended up doing the Destructive System Recovery. About a half hour after the last post I made in this thread, the PC started going bonkers again.
The strange thing about the DSR is that you need 7 CDs to back up the hard drive, but you only need to insert the first one for the recovery. So at the moment, my PC is like it was when I bought it, with the exception that I installed MSN Messenger 7.5 this morning. Also, I installed the Norton AntiVirus that came with the machine, so I've got that for free for three months which isn't too bad. I am a bit worried, though, because it's already discovered one virus. Plus, I'm still getting the message that comes up saying that my System Registry is infected and I should download the cleaner from sysfix.com or whatever it's called. However, my hard drive has 91% of free space on it, so that's good. Tonight, I'm going to re-install Title Bout and OOTP6 plus all my saved Excel, Word and Notepad files. Hopefully, it will go off without a hitch... |

...and that appears to be the case. I've re-installed TBCB and OOTP6, so during the next couple of days I should have a chance to write up the undercard of the San Diego event that was headlined by Kenny Norton (and which I started writing up two bloody weeks ago!)

Thanks for the kind words, Chris.
Okay, following is the first fight of the San Diego undercard. Might be a good idea to read posts #360 and #363 before this one, as it follows on directly from those. The San Diego Undercard Opening Bout The evening started with a contest that was more entertaining (and surprising) than had been expected. For three rounds, Mel Turnbow of New Jersey (61st seed in the HBF's 1st Defense tournament) looked set to spring a big upset against Connecticut's Bernie Reynolds. Coming into the night winless after first being dominated by the tournament's 4th seed Trevor Berbick and then being KO'd in one round by Boston's Jim Maloney, Turnbow wasn't given much of a chance against the 29th-seeded Connecticut native. Reynolds had split his opening two bouts and the popular opinion was that he'd pick up his second tournament victory against Turnbow. Well, popular opinion meant little to Turnbow as he came out aggressively, taking the fight up to Reynolds and outworking him during the first half of the bout. He was showing more determination and resolve than in either of his previous two bouts and, going into the fourth round, he was ahead on the scorecards, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27. But that was as good as it would get for the Jersey slugger. Reynolds was a different fighter in round four, almost as if a switch had been flicked between rounds. He caught and hurt Turnbow with a solid combination early in the round and from that moment on, he didn't let up. Reynolds piled on the pressure, landing clean, punishing combinations. In the space of thirty seconds, he cut Turnbow above the left eye and then bloodied his nose. The 61st seed was rattled and dazed. When Reynolds caught him flush with a textbook left hook at the 2:25 mark of the round, it signalled the beginning of the end. Turnbow staggered back into the ropes and Reynolds followed, teeing off with at least a half-dozen power punches that had his opponent out on his feet. Before he could do any more damage, the referee stepped in and stopped the contest, embracing the defenceless New Jersey native, 2:36 into the fourth round. The punch totals for the bout were: Reynolds: landed 98 of 162 (60%) Turnbow: landed 96 of 239 (40%) Reynolds landed just over half of his punches during his fourth round onslaught. Reynolds is now 2-1(1), while Turnbow remains in the doldrums at 0-3... (to be continued) |

(continuation)
Preliminary 1 In what must certainly be a contender for Fight of the Year, South Carolina's Wayne Bethea (who had celebrated his 23rd birthday this past Wednesday) and New York's Jeff Merritt engaged in a six round trench war to the delight of the San Diego audience. There was very little science in this matchup, with both men standing toe-to-toe (and often head-to-chest) and trading shots. If either man was a stronger fighter, the contest would have been over within three rounds. But as it was, they pounded each other silly, hooks and crosses and uppercuts and stinging body blows leaving both men spent as the final bell sounded and bringing the crowd to their feet in a sustained standing ovation. The two warriors embraced, the mutual respect obvious in their actions. The 21st seed in the 1st Defense tournament, Bethea was awarded a majority decision victory, 58-56, 57-57, 58-56. The two judges who had him victorious scored the bout identically, giving Bethea the first two and last two rounds and Merritt the middle two. A look at the punch totals for the bout showed how hard these two sluggers worked: Bethea: landed 181 of 343 punches (53%) Merritt: landed 140 of 375 punches (37%) Bethea is now 2-1, while Merritt - following equally game efforts against 4th seed Trevor Berbick and 13th seed Jim Maloney - is still winless at 0-2-1. It must be said that this terrific bout was a prime example of why so many are confident of the Heavyweight Boxing Federation's chances of thriving and succeeding in the future. Bethea and Merritt showed a level of determination, spirit and hunger that is missing from much of professional sports these days. Considering the prize money that was on offer ($12,000 for the winner and $6,000 for the loser), it must be said that these young men who are competing in the Heavyweight Boxing Federation's various tournaments should be considered amongst the most passionate, dedicated sportsmen the world over, something that federation president Michael Vincennes and his team have every right to be proud of...
