VINCENNES IMPRESSED AFTER
FIRST DAY OF MIAMI AUDITIONS Monday 3 June 2002 Making his second appearance on SportsCenter in the past four days, Heavyweight Boxing Federation President Michael Vincennes has spoken of his enthusiasm after the first day of federation auditions at the Miami Arena. "Just from today's activities, I know that these auditions are going to introduce some marvellous talent into our ranks," said Vincennes. "Some of the fighters on show today are just so hungry to succeed, so determined to compete for us. A number of them came up to me and told me straight to my face. They were saying that this is their big chance, their opportunity to pull themselves out of the gutter, to free their families from poverty. It was quite a humbling experience." Vincennes confirmed that every individual that the HBF signs to a contract from these four weeks of auditions will be drafted into the upcoming "HBF Qualifying League", which will replace the current international feeder leagues once their tournaments are over. He was asked what this means for the fighters currently competing in the HBF who have struggled to date, "the 0-4 and 0-5 guys", as Stuart Scott put it. "It is unfortunate, but a number of fighters competing across the whole spectrum of the HBF will not be offered subsequent contracts once the tournaments they are involved in come to a conclusion. It's just going to be a reality of our organisation that to stay employed by us, you'll need to be competitive. That may sound harsh, but it's the truth. Every fighter that we have signed to a contract showed us something, showed us enough to make us believe that they would have a shot at competing. It's unfortunate for the ones who haven't lived up to that potential, those who have struggled so far. But I think that if you go through the World Championship or 1st Defense tournaments with an 0-7 record, that's going to be pretty comprehensive proof that you can't cut it in our sport." The federation president was asked if any of the 100 or so fighters on display today had particularly impressed him and his team of scouts. "Well, as you'd know, much of the day was taken up by the physicals," Vincennes replied. "The actual sparring sessions and auditions didn't get underway until the afternoon. We'll have a lot more time during the coming days to evaluate everyone. But I will tell you that there's one guy who's caught our attention already, 22 year-old by the name of Romy Alvarez. I think he's from Belle Glade, in Palm Beach if my memory serves me correct. I think that Elmer Ray and his alliance buddies should keep an eye on this guy, because he'd make a great addition to their group. A really impressive boxer from what I saw of him, quick hands with a solid defense. Pretty shy fella, but very respectful, also. Now, as you know, I'll be heading over to California on Thursday, but I'm hoping to get a better look at him and the others before then." Sitting in the lounge area of his hotel room at downtown Miami's Radisson Hotel, Vincennes finished the interview by saying that he was looking forward to taking in tonight's Anaheim HBF fight card, where Riddick Bowe will be appearing in the main event... |

CALIFORNIAN CRUSH:
BROOKLYN'S CHAMPION DECIMATES NORWEGIAN IN DISNEYLAND Monday 3 June 2002 Brooklyn's Riddick Bowe has scored the most impressive victory of his career to date, dominating Norway's Otto Von Porat and knocking him out cold early in round three. It was Bowe's second consecutive third round knockout win, following his disposal of fellow New Yorker Gerry Cooney five weeks ago. In against an opponent coming off back-to-back, confidence-sapping losses, the World Championship tournament's 5th seed was in a merciless frame of mind, sending Von Porat to the canvas twice in the opening round, controlling him in the second and finishing him off with a single smashing right cross eighteen seconds into round three. It was a performance every bit as dominating as those put on by Sam McVey and Sam Langford at the start of last week, one that showed Bowe has stepped up another gear with the tournament now heading into more dramatic territory. "I knew the guy had struggled in his last couple o' fights," said Bowe. "So I decided to jump on him from the start, not even give him a chance to get into a groove. It worked, I guess." Did it ever. Bowe set the tone for what was to come with a flush left hook just fifteen seconds in, staggering his opponent. The first knockdown came after 54 seconds, a stinging ribshot sending Von Porat to one knee. The second occured at the two minute mark, a heavy right cross that bounced the Norwegian off the ropes. He stumbled and fell forwards but was back up at three, eager to show he could continue. But Bowe was all over him like a rash, showing more aggression than in any of his previous bouts. Von Porat was constantly backpedalling, unable to mount an effective offense. There were no knockdowns in round two, but Bowe was just as relentless, catching the World Championship tournament's 44th seed with a number of powerful single shots and damaging combinations. When the end came, it was in comprehensive fashion. The right cross snapped Von Porat's head around on his shoulders and he impacted heavily with the canvas. He didn't move for the duration of the count and the bout was officially over, exactly thirty seconds into round three. The punch totals showed the extent of Bowe's domination: Bowe: 62/157 Von Porat: 7/36 "I know that if I take care of my own business, the rest will sort itself out," said Bowe, when questioned about some of the other competitors in his tournament group. "I'm 5-0 and in first place, so what's happening with the other guys, that doesn't concern me much. I just have to concentrate on winning. If I do that, it won't matter what they do." Bowe has shown in his last two victories that he must be considered amongst the top handful of favourites for the Heavyweight Boxing Federation's World Championship. He is a rare talent in the federation: a skillful boxer with knockout power. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the Brooklyn native is still perfect when the later stages of the tournament roll around...

Sorry, man. I haven't made him yet. It's something I'll be doing this coming weekend, making up all the fictional characters from our OOTP community. Once he's done, I'll post his details for you.

THE ARROWHEAD POND UNDERCARD
Opening Bout Chicago's Bill Tate and Philadelphia's Don Warner had to settle for a draw (57-57, 58-56 (Warner), 58-58) after giving each other a good six round workout. With a combined record of 0-7-1 coming into the evening, both men showed enough desparation and tenacity to be fitting winners, but a draw was probably a reasonable result considering the back-and-forth nature of the contest. Tate is now 0-3-2. Warner is 0-4-1. Preliminary 1 In an unimpressive bout, Chicago native Toxie Hall improved to 2-3 with a split decision win against Johnny Riggins (60-57, 57-58, 58-57). In stark contrast to the evening's opener, neither fighter really gave a good account of himself and Hall was simply the slightly better of a bad pair. Born and raised in Washington state, Riggins has now lost two fights in a row to drop to 2-3. His earlier victories over higher seeds Carl Morris and Cesar Brion are now all but worthless and his chances of progressing to the second stage of the 1st Defense tournament are now all but over. Preliminary 2 Argentina's Alex Miteff scored his first professional victory, knocking out Englishman Tom Cowler at the 1:51 mark of round three. Cowler was coming off an upset win against Norway's Otto Von Porat but was never in this contest. Miteff dominated the opening two rounds before dropping the World Championship tournament's 124th seed twice in round three. Cowler failed to beat the count after a right hook planted him on his backside. It looked like the punch had taken all the fight out of him as he sat, breathing heavily and trying to clear his head as the count reached ten. Both fighters are now 1-4 and will be hoping for wins in their final two bouts if they want to have any chance of taking part in one of the federation's upcoming tournaments. (to be continued) |

Hm, I've got a feeling that Bill Tate and Don Warner aren't going to be around much longer after the end of the tournment.

Yep, there's a bunch of guys who, although they have no chance of progressing in the tournaments, are literally fighting to remain in the HBF. Makes the seemingly meaningless bouts a bit more exciting, I guess.

Support Bout The misery continues for Gerry Cooney, with the once-touted New Yorker falling to 0-5 after being comprehensively defeated by the streaking Italian Sante Amonti. It's hard to believe that in the days leading up to the commencement of the HBF's World Championship tournament, there were some who believed that the Manhattan native had a puncher's chance of making it into the tournament's second stage. As it stands now, he'll be lucky to be offered another contract once stage one is over. Amonti sent Cooney to the canvas three times on the way to a 58-53, 57-54, 58-53 unanimous decision victory, improving his record to 3-1-1. The humourists might say that Cooney should look on the bright side and be proud of the fact that he managed to make it past the third round (something he's been unable to do in his last three contests), but the fact is, this 21 year-old has been perhaps THE biggest disappointment of the World Championship tournament. Some have said that he needs an injection of mongrel, that he's taking the gentlemanly disposition he displays out of the ring into it when he fights. Whatever the reason, the 6'7" slugger has been an abysmal failure. The Italian was quickly into a groove, taking the first round before Cooney fired back strongly in the second, producing the best three minutes of boxing in his pro career to date. But it was a false hope, as was evidenced when Cooney hit the canvas for the first time 1:16 into round three. He walked straight into a right cross and was to his feet by four, but less than thirty seconds later he was down again. A second right cross from Amonti put him on the seat of his pants and some at ringside started wondering if he would be taken out within three rounds for the fourth consecutive time. But he survived, making it to his feet at seven and seeing out the round. Things got no better for Cooney in the bottom half of the bout, with Amonti maintaining his hold on the contest in the fourth and then dropping the New Yorker for a third time in round five with a shot to the ribs. To his credit, he finished the bout competitively, giving as good as he got during its final five minutes. But in the end, it amounted to very little. What can one say about Amonti? The Italian is the 7th seed in Group Five and the 108th seed in the World Championship tournament. Since losing a majority decision to Riddick Bowe in his second bout, he's reeled off three straight wins against the 44th, 60th and 76th seeds and is the ONLY #7 seeded fighter in the entire tournament with three wins. Quite an impressive achievement. And, believe it or not, it actually gets a bit easier for him in his final two bouts, which are against the 124th and 92nd seeds. (to be continued)

Co-Feature The big Hungarian-born Englishman had shown signs of this possibility in his previous fights, but tonight it became a reality. World Championship tournament 28th seed Joe Bugner fell to his first defeat at the hands of Germany's Hein Ten-Hoff in what could only be labelled a dreadful display. With outright 2nd place in Group Five on the line, Bugner put in the worst performance of his professional career and Ten-Hoff was a clear 59-54, 58-55, 59-54 unanimous decision victor. With the exception of the opening round, which Bugner won handily, the 60th-seeded German was always in control of the contest, putting Bugner on the canvas with a five punch salvo midway through the fifth and imposing his will over the seemingly unwilling Englishman for most of the bout's duration. Coming off a surprise defeat against Italy's Sante Amonti, Ten-Hoff showed an infectious enthusiasm, reflected by the fact that he threw almost two-and-a-half times as many punches as his favoured opponent. Ten-Hoff: 140/430 (32.6%) Bugner: 63/176 (35.8%) The impressive win improves Ten-Hoff's record to 4-1(2) and puts him in 2nd place in the group with just two bouts remaining in stage one. However, he's no certainty to qualify, as his final bout is against the tournament's 5th seed, Riddick Bowe. Group Five Standings after series five 1st: 1(5) Riddick Bowe (USA), 5-0-0(3) 2nd: 4(60 Hein Ten-Hoff (Germany), 4-1-0(2) 3rd: 2(28) Joe Bugner (England), 3-1-1(1) 4th: 7(108) Sante Amonti (Italy), 3-1-1 Bowe and Bugner will clash in series six and if the Englishman puts in the same kind of effort he showed tonight, he'll be lucky to survive three rounds. Ten-Hoff takes on the reeling Norwegian Otto Von Porat (2-3) while Amonti has a great chance to stay in contention as he'll face 124th seed Tom Cowler. |

Go Amonti, I want the underdog to advance to the second stage.

I would love to see that happen also. And he has a really good chance, as Bugner AND Ten-Hoff both have to fight Bowe in the next two series. If Amonti can win out and Bowe beats both of them, Amonti will go through. That would really give me a thrill.
