KEY MATCHUPS APLENTY IN WEEK TWENTY
Sunday 16 June 2002 Tomorrow night sees the commencement of the twentieth week of competition in the Heavyweight Boxing Federation's World Championship and 1st Defense tournaments. Besides being something of a landmark moment in the short but successful life of the federation, the week will also bring about the conclusion of the fifth series of bouts in both tournaments. As has been the case during the past three weeks, this one features a number of important contests, with some fighters in a position to all but book themselves safe passage to the second stage of their respective tournament. Georgia's Young Stribling is one such fighter. The undefeated 17 year-old will be in action in the main event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles tomorrow night, where a win over his English opponent Frank Bruno will see him maintain 1st place in Group Seven of the World Championship tournament. Max Schmeling represents Germany's biggest chance for success in the World Championship tournament and he'll step into the ring on Wednesday at Johannesburg's Rand Stadium against Steve Hamas. Both men will bring 4-0 records into the contest. With leadership of Group Ten in the World Championship tournament at stake, it figures to be one of the bouts of the week. The South African event will also feature a battle of 4-0 combatants from the 1st Defense tournament, with 7th-seeded New Yorker Doug Jones facing England's Don Cockell. Friday's evening's Thailand card features Group Fifteen of the World Championship tournament, which is without a doubt the most competitive group in the tournament. England's Gary Mason and Argentina's Oscar Bonavena sit at the top of the group with 3-1 records, followed by a quintet of fighters all at 2-2. All of the four bouts involving the group are of vital importance, so it's an event not to be missed. Finally, on Saturday the World Championship tournament's #2 seed Sonny Liston will headline the federation's first visit to North Carolina when he takes on Charley Retzlaff at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem. The man known as the "Missouri Monster" by some has recently announced his intentions to relocate to Scotland once the first stage of the World Championship tournament is over, but he'll be entertaining boxing fans in the Twin City on Saturday night. The 1st Defense tournament's #2 seed James Jeffries will be in action in the Co-Feature. The Californian destroyed Chuck Wepner in his last outing and a win against Welshman Johnny Williams coupled with a victory for 15th seed Marvin Hart over Peter Maher will officially secure a spot in the tournament's second stage for Jeffries. "Last week was pretty incredible," said federation president Michael Vincennes, speaking this afternoon from New York. "And this one promises to be just as exciting. We're returning to South Africa for the first time since April and I've been told that the fans over there are really looking forward to Wednesday's card. We'll also be back in Thailand and Sonny Liston will be bringing boxing to Carolina for the first time. It all adds up to a great week for the federation, as far as I can see." |

LOYALTIES SPLIT IN HOUSTON
Monday 17 June 2002 A poll taken yesterday on Houston radio station KILT-AM (Sports Radio 610) has indicated that some 62% of listeners would like to see Cleveland Williams defeat fellow Texan and World Championship tournament #3 seed Jack Johnson when the two clash at the Reliant Park Pavilion on July 20. Conducted from 9am to 9pm, the station took almost a thousand calls for the poll with the overall consensus being that Houston is more enamoured with their down to earth hometown boy Williams than the outgoing, extroverted Galveston native Johnson. "The guy's attitude has really rubbed me the wrong way from day one," said caller Jason Howard. "Uh, it's clear for everyone to see that he has talent and loads of it, but he just seems to be ... well, he's just so in love with himself that it makes me sick. Remember how he was non-stop partying before his first fight? Just look what happened. He gets, dropped on his ass by some English guy who'll be lucky to win half of his fights for the rest of his career. Then, when he comes and fights here at home, he gives us all a, a sob story. "Boo hoo hoo, I'm so sorry I made you all angry." Says he's gonna change. But then he's right back at it again down in Cuba, partying until all hours. He's just lucky that it didn't cost him again, I guess. The guy has no, um, integrity, as far as I can see. He just can't help himself, can't resist the temptations that his lifestyle, um, throws at him. No, I really hope that Cleveland gives the arrogant fool what he deserves. I hope Cleveland turns his lights out." Others presented a different argument. "Come on, man," said Larry Morris. "Anyone who knows anything about this sport knows that Jacky Johnson is one of the most gifted fighters in the HBF. And just like he said himself last night, Williams will be lucky to go the distance with him. If we want the first HBF World Champion to be a Texan, we should all be getting behind Jacky Johnson. No offense to Cleveland, but the brother ain't got a hope in hell of getting near that World Championship. Sure, Jacky may have a bit of an ego, but really, what's wrong with that? The guy's an entertainer, a damn sight better one than Cleveland Williams ever could be. I think Johnson'll win it inside of four rounds." As has been previously publicised, Jack Johnson's partying lifestyle has not sit well with many Texans, which is probably the main reason why so many have gravitated towards the shy, non-threatening Williams. But as expected, the majority of the sport's observers and experts have predicted an easy win for Johnson. "I wouldn't be surprised if he went through the rest of the tournament undefeated," said the New York Age's James Reynolds. "That performance here last night was one of the most clinical victories I've seen, and against a fighter who had a chance to spring an upset. Johnson just didn't let Snipes get anywhere near winning that fight and I can't see why he won't do the same to Williams." What does it all add up to? Without a doubt, it adds up to an interesting night on July 20... FLORIDA FIREBRAND ROCKS THE MIC IN SOUTH BEACH News out of Florida today has alleged that World Championship tournament contender Elmer Ray was seen busting some rhymes at the Marlin Bar in Miami Beach last night. The native of Hastings in St. John's County is due to fly out to Japan on Tuesday with cousin Terone Haynes and only returned home to Florida from Mississippi this past Thursday, so whether or not the story is true is up for speculation. Ray's love of hip hop music is well known, so it could be that he decided to make a quick visit to South Beach before going to Japan. However, Ray has said recently that his dedication to his boxing career and, in particular, qualifying for the World Championship tournament's second stage is the prime focus in his life at the moment, so such an outing would seem to fly in the face of that. Without a doubt, it's a topic he'll be queried over in the coming days...

I've got a feeling that those 62% of listeners of KILT-AM are going to be really really disappointed as I'm thinking Johnson takes this by wide UD. Though Cleveland does have a small chance cause the man can fire some hurting bombs.

Having some PC problems (again) which have prevented me from running the upcoming fight cards. It's weird. I set up the fight card, click on Sim Next and then, after about 15 seconds of the hourglass, I get the message box saying that TB1 must close down and the option to send an error report. I'm pretty sure it's to do with the system32 section of the PC, 'cause I've been having problems with it for a while and the sound on the PC isn't working, either. I'll probably have to do another destructive system recovery to get the stupid machine to work properly.

Thanks, Romy. I've been having these problems with the PC on and off for the last few months, almost to the point where I feel it's a lost cause (the PC, that is). But it's never been to a point where it was affecting Title Bout.

KC, I had exactly the same problem last August with TB1 so I upgraded to TB2. Unfortunately I still had the same problem, so my dad came up and reformatted my computer and it's been fine since, touch wood [I tap my head].

Yep, there's a couple of things I have to sort out with the machine before doing the recovery, mainly in regard to saving a large music mix I've made to disk. I'll probably do the recovery on the weekend. Unfortunately, I've become quite an expert at re-formatting this PC...

I did the DSR this morning and installed both AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Spyware (free versions). I'm hoping they'll be enough to protect the PC from any further problems. Sound is working fine so I'm hoping that there won't be a problem when I reinstall Title Bout, which I'll do tomorrow morning. If I have time, I'll run the Staples Center fight card and do some of the review of it tomorrow while here at work.

STAPLES CENTER STUNNER:
STRIBLING AND LASTARZA BOTH LOSE IN LOS ANGELES Monday 17 June 2002 Another dramatic chapter was written tonight in the Heavyweight Boxing Federation's World Championship tournament with the top two seeds of Group Seven, Young Stribling and Roland LaStarza, both being beaten at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It's the first time in the tournament where the top two seeds in a group have both tasted defeat on the same night. Stribling and LaStarza had stirred up some controversy before even stepping into the ring, with ESPN's ringside commentators reporting that the two had allegedly been involved in a heated confrontation in the bowels of the Staples Center earlier in the evening, around about the time of the second prelim. LaStarza has not been shy in the past when it comes to criticising Stribling and trying to get under his skin, but something he said during their altercation must have been the last straw for the 17 year-old Georgia native because, according to the reports, he had to be held back from attacking LaStarza, and in front of at least twenty witnesses. (to be continued)

I guess someone should have told those two to save it for the cats they had to fight in the ring. Should be interesting to see how this affects the rankings for this group as well as adding a bit of extra drama for when these two finally face off.

Thanks, Chris. It seems to be working OK now. Also, I was able to salvage my MLB universe (though with quite a bit of work). What I had to do was go through the League News Box folder on the CD backup and copy all the non-infected files to the C: drive on the PC, which involved copying batches of them as the infected files were located throughout the folder.
